Darian Johnson

Darian Johnson, seven weeks old, died at his residence in Royalton, MN, on Friday, March 20, 1998.

Funeral services were held March 24 at the Brenny Funeral Home Chapel in Royalton with Pastor Steve Schoepf officiating.

Survivors include his mother, Theresa Johnson and special friend Chris Skalsky of Royalton; grandparents, Elizabeth Johnson and special friend Mark Trettel of Little Falls, MN, and Jeffrey Johnson of Clear Lake, MN; great-grandparents, Kenneth and Betty Rudlang of Pine River, MN, Carrol and Beverly Stave of St. Cloud, MN, and Duane Johnson of Wahkon, MN and great-great-grandmother, Hermina Hickman of Buffalo, MN.

Casketbearers were Donald Schlichting and Chris Skalsky.

Benedict ‘Ben‘ J. Lapos
Benedict “Ben” J. Lapos, age 76 and life-long resident of Flensburg, MN, died April 29, 1998 at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 2 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg, with the Rev. Anthony Kroll officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Benedict “Ben” J. Lapos was born November 15, 1921, in Morrison County, MN, to the late George and Mary (Kotch) Lapos. He grew up and helped his family farm in Culdrum Township, Morrison County. He attended country school and Little Falls High School, graduating from the Class of 1941. Ben entered the United States Navy on September 15, 1942, and served as a Boatswain’s Mate Second Class, receiving an honorable discharge on November 3, 1945. He was united in marriage to Lorraine M. Kulus on June 17, 1947, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg. Following their marriage the couple, the couple lived in Flensburg where he resided until his death. He served as mayor of Flensburg in the 1970s and 1980s. From 1982 to the present, he worked as the Waste Plant Treatment Manager for the City of Flensburg, served as a former Clerk of the Culdrum Town Board and was a member of the Flensburg American Legion Post 136 and Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine; son, Ronald Lapos of Tampa, FL; daughters, Sharon Kedrowski and husband Dennis of Royalton, MN, LuAnn Jarvis of Flensburg, MN and Jane Doroff and husband Paul of Cloverdale, CA; brothers, George Lapos of Randall, MN, Donald Lapos and wife Marion of Flensburg, MN; sister, Emma Wyrwicki and husband Frank of Little Falls, MN; four grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Florian and Joseph Lapos.

Honorary pallbearers and casketbearers were members of the Flensburg American Legion Post 136.

Lloyd G. Motzko

Lloyd G. Motzko, age 81, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died April 28, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 1 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls. Military rites were conducted by the Little Falls VFW Post 1112.

Lloyd G. Motzko was born July 4, 1916, in Little Falls, to the late George and Clara (Ginter) Motzko. He grew up near Bowlus, MN, and attended country school. He then worked on a farm East of Little Falls. Lloyd entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in the European Theatre until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was united in marriage to Geraldine M. Blahna on February 16, 1944, at the U.S. Army Camp Chapel in Lompoc, CA. Following his discharge, the couple returned to Little Falls where Lloyd worked as a mechanic at Camp Ripley until 1950, and also as a delivery truck driver for the Morrison County Co-op. He then was a salesman/delivery driver for the Lakeland Bakery for 17 years. Later, he worked for a beverage distributor as a salesman for four years, and finally worked as a truck driver/dispatcher for the Larson Boat Company in Little Falls until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, VFW Post 1112 and the Little Falls Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine M. Motzko; sons, Lyle A. Motzko of Nevis, MN, and Kevin L. Motzko and wife Sheila of Brooklyn Park, MN; and grandson, Phillip Kevin Motzko of Buffalo, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, John and Frank Motzko and a sister, DeLoris Jendro.

Pallbearers were Jacob Erhardt, Edward and James Jendro, Tom Motzko, Douglas Rebischke and Steve Burnett.

Helen F. Deering
Helen F. Deering, age 72, a resident of rural Little Falls, MN, died April 27, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held April 29 at St. James Catholic church in Randall, MN, with Father Al Quade officiating. Interment was in ur Lady of Lourdes Cemetery in Little Falls.

Helen F. Deering was born on September 17, 1925, in Pike Creek Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Frank and Mary (Olek) Deering. She grew up in Pike Creek Township and attended country school there. She played piano and sang in Helen’s Melodiers for 30 years. She also went to beautician school and owned and operated Helen’s Beauty Shop in Randall for over 40 years. Helen still found time to volunteer at St. Otto’s Care Center for many years. She spent a lot of time with her nieces and nephews and had a great influence on their lives. She was loyal and devoted to her parents who she cared for up to the time of their deaths. She loved to socalize and found humor in most circumstances. Her musical talents allowed her to play the guitar, banjo, piano and organ. She was the organist at St. James Catholic Church in Randall for 16 years. Helen was an avid crafter, enjoyed decorating rocks and loved her house plants. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Randall and Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her brothers, Clem Deering of Little Falls, Alex Deering and wife, Barb, of Maple Grove, MN, Stanley Deering of Villard, MN, and Ed Deering and wife, Loran, of Fulton, IL; sisters, Sarah Wiherski of Little Falls and Eleanore Frey and husband, Albert Sr., of Randall; many nieces and nephews and many great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Sylvester and Constante Deering; and niece, Patricia Frey.

Pallbearers were Donald and Andy Wiherski, Steve and Joe Deering, Albert Frey, Jr., Barb Brown, Lenore and Kristin Pallansch and Beverly Kautz.

Evelyn Benusa

Evelyn Benusa, age 75, a resident of Royalton, MN, died Sunday, May 3, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital, Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held May 6 at Holy Trinity Church in Royalton with Fr. Laurn Virnig officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Evelyn was born January 12, 1923, in Royalton, to the late Philip and Frances (Pintok) Warzecha. Evelyn grew up in the Royalton and Opole areas. As a young woman she traveled to California where she worked as a welder in a shipyard. She married Luke Benusa on May 19, 1948, at Immculate Conception Church in Lake Charles, LA. They resided in several places including Little Falls, Deer Lodge, MT, and Royalton for the past 30 years. Evelyn was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton and was an active Christian Mother. She enjoyed her work as a home health care aide. Her hobbies included gardening, crocheting and bowling.

Survivors include husband, Luke Benusa of Little Falls; son, Gary and Jeanette and their sons, Christopher, Andrew, Michael and David of Duluth, MN; son, James and Kay with sons, Chad Bailey and wife Linda (with son Kyle), Nicholas and Nathan of Royalton; daughter, Mary and Scott Krueger with their son Isaac (and fiancée Amy) of Royalton; sisters, Bernice Wollack of Royalton, Leona Schneider of Swanville, MN, Loretta Benusa of Blaine, MN, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Elmer Warzecha.

Casketbearers were nieces and nephews.

Alpha V. Burdorf

Alpha V. Burdorf, age 83, a resident of Pierz, MN, formerly of the Watertown, MN, area, died May 3, 1998, at St. Mary’s Villa Nursing Home in Pierz, MN.

Funeral services were held at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, in Watertown Twp., with Rev. Keith H. Grimm officiating. Interment was at St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery, Watertown Twp.

Alpha was born February 2, 1915, at Camden Twp., Carver County, MN, the daughter of William J. and Anna C. (Briesemeister) Zastrow. She was baptized March 14, 1915, at Zion Lutheran Church, Mayer, MN by Rev. F.W. Erthal and confirmed April 28, 1929, at Zion Lutheran Church, Mayer, by Rev. F.W. Erthal. On September 6, 1936, she married Ernest F. Burdorf at St. Mark Lutheran Church in New Germany, MN by Rev. Theodore Rolf.

Survivors include her children and spouses, Darlene Haften of Rockford, MN, Kenneth Burdorf of Waconia, MN, Loren and Betty Burdorf of Villard, MN, Alma Ann and Larry Lease of Mora, MN, John and Sandy Burdorf of Mayer; 11 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Clarence Pawelk of Norwood Young America, MN; brothers and sisters-in-law, Wilbert and Anita Zastrow of Mayer, Linus and Lillian Zastrow of Amboy, MN; brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, John Burdorf of Arlington, Marie and Harold Hecksel of Mayer; nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Casketbearers were David grandsons, David Burdorf, Michael Burdorf, Cory Lease, Wayne Lease, Greg Haften, Mark Haften, Lyle Haften, Dennis Lease and Scott Lease.

Fred B. Fiedler
Fred B. Fielder, age 91, a resident of Rice, MN, died May 4, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Funeral services were held May 7, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rice with the Rev. Kenneth Popp and Rev. David Maciej officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Fred Fiedler was born January 13, 1907, in Graham Township (Benton County) to Sylvester and Anna (Fuchs) Fiedler. He married Mathilda Sauer on October 24, 1939, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Rice. He lived in the Rice area his entire life. He was a farmer and a blacksmith before retiring in 1975. He was a member of Immaculate Concep-tion Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus Bishop Busch Council 9138 of Rice. He was a former Rice Fire Chief and a former Sauk Rapids/Rice School Board member.

Survivors include children Fred Fiedler, Jr, of Olympia, WA, Bob and Yvonne Fiedler of Shoreview, MN, Barbara and Tom Weller of Oakdale, MN, Tim and Karen Fiedler of Waukesha, WI, Eileen and Conrad Fisher of Austin, and Ellen and Clarence Manke of Maplewood, MN; sister and brother, Veronica Voigt of Rice, and Henry Fiedler of Little Falls, MN; and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mathilda on April 24, 1998; brothers, Edward, Casper, Joseph, Alphonse, Louis and Herman Fiedler; and sisters, Eleanor Fiedler, Bertha Emdeke, Regina Popp and Christine Wiener.

Casketbearers were Stephan, Aaron, Anna, and Dayna Fiedler, Cory, Matthew, and Thad Fisher, David and Amy Weller, and Isaac Manke.
