Glen Larsen

Glen H. Larsen, age 88, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died December 4, 1997, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held December 8 at the First Lutheran Church in Little Falls with Rev. David Steffenson officiating. Burial will be at a later date in Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.

Glen was born November 28, 1909, in Bowlus, MN, to the late Alfred and Annie (Johnston) Larsen, the youngest of three children. He was educated in the Little Falls school system and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, MN. In the early 1920s he moved to Hyde County, SD, with his mother. He worked as a farmhand in the area and married Nina A. Stoley on November 23, 1931. He farmed in Eden Township, Hyde County, SD, until 1945 at which time he moved the family to Highmore, SD. While there, he served on the Highmore city council and as assistant chief of the volunteer fire department. In 1958 he returned to Little Falls and became greenskeeper for the Little Falls Golf Course. He later became greenskeeper for the Golden Tee Golf Course (now Majestic Oaks). In 1973 he retired to the couple’s lake home in Scandia Valley, Morrison County, MN, and lived there until 1983 when declining health forced him to move to Royalton, MN, to be near his daughter. The couple later resided at the Pine Grove Manor in Little Falls until his hospitalization in October of 1992. He became a resident of St. Otto’s Care Center, residing there until his death. Fishing and hunting were his primary entertainment throughout his life, and he greatly enjoyed his seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Nina of Little Falls; daughter, Alys Hanowski and husband Ken of Royalton; son, Irl Larsen and wife Carol of Ramsey, MN; brother, Kenneth Larsen of Robbinsdale, MN; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Dianna at age one year and another infant daughter at birth.

Casketbearers will be Dan, Brenda and Mike Hanowski, Deborah Plagrens, Karen Witt and Erik and Terrence Larsen.

Emma Sobania

Emma Sobania of Bowlus, MN, died December 5, 1997, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held December 9 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in North Prairie, MN. Burial was in Holy Trinity Cemetery in Royalton, MN.

Emma was born June 15, 1912, in Bowlus to Anton and Catherine (Kroll) Lempart. She married Frank Sobania August 20, 1940, in Bowlus. She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church, Christian Mothers and the Crosier Apostulate.

Survivors include her son, Robert “Tex” of Bowlus; sister, Martha Kuklok of Bowlus; brothers, Leo of Bowlus and Rev. Ignatius Lempart of Hastings, NE, and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband on April 29, 1966; four brothers, Lawrence, John, Peter and Sam and four sisters, Katie, Annie, Frances and Sophie.

Herbert Kenning

Herbert L. Kenning, age 66, a resident of St. Cloud, MN, died at his home on December 5, 1997.

Funeral services were held December 9 at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Pearl Lake, MN. Burial will be in Bird Island.

Herbert was born July 22, 1931, in Staples, MN, to Charles W. and Mary (Brandel) Kenning. He farmed from 1945-1989 in the Pearl Lake area. Moving to St. Cloud in 1989, he worked for the St. Cloud Parks Department, retiring in 1996.

Survivors include sisters and brothers, Lucille Weyrauch of Sauk Rapids, MN, Stanley of Baxter, MN, Charles of Prior Lake, MN, Mary and Martin of Columbia Heights, MN, and Julia Thomalla of St. Cloud.

Bonnie Przybilla

Bonnie Przybilla, age 34, a resident of Roseau, MN, died December 7, 1997, at the Roseau Hospital.

Mass of Christian burial was held December 11 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Buckman, MN, with Father Ron Dockendorf officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Bonnie was born July 6, 1963, in Minneapolis, MN, to Rueben and Natalie (Ratke) Przybilla. She spent most of her life in the Roseau Children’s Home in Roseau.

Survivors include her parents; sisters, Debbie Marsh and husband Mike of Tullahoma, TN, Cindee Przybilla of St. Louis Park, MN, and Anita Zemlicka and husband Kurt of St. Louis Park; one nephew and three nieces.

She was preceded in death by her maternal and paternal grandparents.

Ralph Wiener

Ralph J. Wiener, age 82, a resident of St. Cloud, MN, died December 8, 1997, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Services were held December 10 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, St. Cloud, with Rev. Simon Bischof officiating. Burial was in the St. Lawrence Cemetery in Duelm, MN.

Ralph was born March 7, 1915, in North Prairie, MN, to Albert J. and Magdalen E. (Jagielski) Wiener. He married Genevieve Ruhoff on May 11, 1949, in St. Augustine Catholic Church in St. Cloud. He grew up in North Prairie and lived in East St. Cloud since his marriage. He was a carman for Burlington Northern for 30 years, retiring in 1978. He was an Army veteran of World War II, serving in the South Pacific and earning a Purple Heart. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church in St. Cloud and St. Cloud East Side VFW Post 4847.

He is survived by his wife Genevieve of St. Cloud. He is father and father-in-law to Donald Wiener of Sartell, MN, Leonard and Janet Wiener of Sartell, Gerald and Pam Wiener of St. Cloud, Elaine and Jerry Heinks of St. Cloud, Allan and Brenda Wiener of St. Augusta, MN, and Theresa and Paul Przybilla of Little Falls, MN; brothers and sisters, Jerome Wiener of Sturgis, MI, Delores Thomalla of St. Paul, MN, Angie Kaiser of St. Cloud, Cyril Wiener of Royalton, MN, Herman Wiener of Rice, MN, and Sister Margarita Wiener of St. Paul and 11 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Aloysious and Bernard Wiener.

Casketbearers were James Kaiser, Francis Otto, Richard Ruhoff, Lawrence and Joseph Wiener and Richard Thomalla.

Gene Traxel

Gene R. “Bear” Traxel, age 38, a resident of Urbandale, IA, died of cancer November 6, 1997, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center.

Services were held November 10 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Urbandale, where he was a member. Interment was at Glendale Cemetery following the service.

Gene was born in Las Cruces, NM. He also lived in Underwood, ND, graduated from Beulah High School, Beulah, ND, before attending college in Rapid City, SD. He lived in Des Moines, IA for 16 years. He was employed by Pioneer Hi Bred for 12 years as a project leader in the Technology Center.

Survivors include his wife, Bev; a daughter, Jenny; a son, Michael; parents, LeRoy and Norma of Bismark, ND; one brother, Kenneth and wife Peggy and family of Lincoln, ND; one sister and brother-in-law, Bev (Traxel) and Monte Gegleman and family of Andover, KS; grandmothers, Erna Traxel of Hazen, ND, and Pauline Zeiszler of Beulah; mother-in-law, Hilarion Nelson of Sartell, MN, and brothers-in-law, Bruce Gateley and wife Pat of Nisswa, MN, and Bob Nelson, Jr., and wife Carolyn and family of Sartell.

He was preceded in death by his sister, LeAnn; grandfathers, Robert Traxel and Walter Zeiszler; nephew, Christopher Traxel and a father-in-law, Robert Nelson, Sr.

Father Frederick Kampsen

Father Frederick Kampsen, age 86, priest of the St. Cloud Diocese since 1939, died November 7, 1997, at the St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, MN.

The Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church in Melrose, MN, on November 12. Burial was at Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Elrosa, MN.

Father Kampsen was born on December 9, 1911, in Meire Grove, MN. He was the son of Bernard and Katherine (Peter-meier) Kampsen He attended St. John’s School and Country Public School, Meiere Grove. Father Kampsen attended the Pontifical College Josephinum for his high school, college and seminary education. He was ordained at the Josephinum on May 28, 1939. He celebrated his first Mass in Worthington, OH, on June 13, 1939.

Father Kampsen’s pastoral assignments were the following: Holy Angels Church in St. Cloud, 1944-47; St. Elizabeth’s Parish, Elizabeth; St. Leonard’s Parish, Pelican Rapids; St. Joseph Church, Clarissa, 1947-54; St. John Nepomuk, Lastrup, 1954-61; St. Mary’s Church, Breckenridge, MN, 1961-70; Holy Family Church, Belle Prairie, MN, 1970-74; Immaculate Conception Church, Osakis, MN, 1974-80; and St. Margaret’s Church, Lake Henry. He remained there until he retired to Melrose on July 2, 1986, where he lived until his death.

Survivors include six brothers, Henry of Sauk Centre, MN, Norbert, Clarence and Herman of Elrosa, Edwin of Litchfield and Ron of New Boston, MI, and four sisters, Norma Salmond of Huntington Beach, CA, Loretta Meyer of Meire Grove, Verens Olmscheid of Elrosa and Marcella Burns of Clarissa. He was preceded in death by a sister, Rose Yarke and a brother who died in infancy.
