Phillip Kempenich
Phillip Kempenich, age 40, of Little Falls, MN died September 17, 1997.
Services were September 20 at St. James Catholic Church in Randall with Father Al Quade officiating. Burial was in the St. James Parish Cemetery.

Phillip Kempenich was born October 9, 1956, to Frank and Helen (Wippler) Kempenich in Minneapolis, MN. He lived with his parents in Parker Township. Phillip served in the National Guard. He then lived in Morrison County where he drove milk truck and worked at other various jobs. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, visiting with people on his milk route, playing horseshoe, the outdoors and his family.

Survivors include his two children, Beau and Jennifer; his parents, Frank and Helen Kempenich of Randall; two sisters, Margaret (Bob) Voge of Minneapolis, Elizabeth (Corky) Erickson of Long Prairie, MN; a brother, Michael Kempenich-Wind of Walker, MN; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two infant sisters and his grandparents.

Cecelia Cichon
Cecelia Cichon, age 93, a resident of Swanville, MN, died September 17, 1997 at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held September 20 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville with the Rev. Thomas Meyer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Cecelia Cichon was born September 11, 1904 in Swan River Township, Morrison County, MN to the late Mathias and Rosalia (Kubiak) Jelinski. She grew up in rural Flensburg, MN. She was united to marriage to Steve J. Cichon on November 20, 1928 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski, MN. After their marriage the couple farmed in Swanville Township, Morrison County, MN until 1944 at which time they moved to Culdrum Township, Morrison County, MN and farmed. Cecelia was a devoted homemaker. After their retirement the couple continued to live on the farm in Culdrum Township. Steve entered St. Otto’s Care Center in 1992 and passed away on September 30, 1996. Cecelia continued living on the farm until 1995 when she became a resident of St. Otto’s Care Center where she resided until her death. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville and the Christian Mothers for a number of years.

Survivors include sons, Jerome M. Cichon of Swanville, and Philip M. Cichon and wife Marilyn of Swanville; daughter, Marcella M. Woitalla of Pierz, MN; sister, Margaret Crofts of Little Falls; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Steve Cichon; son, Bernard Cichon; brothers, John, Joe, Richard, Charlie, and infant twins, Michael and Jonny; sisters, Victoria, Mary, Kate, Hattie; son-in-law, Alfred Woitalla in 1992 and daughter-in-law Mary Ann Cichon in August of 1996.

Casketbearers were Bernice Marshall, Kathy Burgardt, James, David and Roger Cichon, and James Woitalla.

Evelyn M. Japp
Evelyn M. Japp, age 69, a resident of Brainerd, MN died September 17, 1997 at St. Cloud Hospital, MN. Funeral services were September 20, at St. Mathias Catholic Church with Father Henry Miller officiating. Burial was September 22 at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley.
Mrs. Japp was born in Frazee, MN on September 27, 1927 to Arthur and Mary (Manning) Baker. She married Robert Japp in Frazee on May 15, 1948. She had worked as a Home Health Aide for Crow Wing County. She was a member of St. Mathias Catholic Church, the Christian Mothers, VFW Auxiliary, Round Robin Garden Club, and active in the Sixth District Horticulture Society.

Survivors include her husband Robert; two sons, Larry Japp and James Japp, both of Brainerd, MN; one daughter, Elaine Johnson of Brainerd; seven grandchildren; mother, Mary Baker of Frazee, MN; one sister, Florence Briese of Forman, ND; three brothers, John Baker of Calloway, MN, George Baker of Fargo, ND; and Gordon Baker of Frazee, MN. She was preceded in death by her father and seven brothers and sisters.

Lily Mary Harth

Lily Mary Harth, age 90, a resident of Medford, OR, died September 21, 1997 at her home.
The funeral service was held September 25 at Memory Gardens Chapel. Burial was at the Memory Gardens Memorial park in Medford.

Lily was born May 7, 1907, in Little Falls, MN. She married Elroy Harth on January 5, 1942 in Reno, NV. Mrs. Harth was born and raised in Little Falls. After moving to the Rogue Valley in California, she raised cattle in the Valley View area (Ashland) for 45 years. She enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include two sons, Gary E. Harth, Medford and Gene B. Harth, Medford; one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Hector and Marion LeDoux and her husband Elroy in 1962.

Edwin Winskowski
Edwin S. Winskowski, age 90, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died September 18, 1997 at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.
Mass of Christian Burial was held September 22, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Leroy Kremer and Father Harold J. Kost officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Edwin was born January 7, 1907 in Holdingford, MN to the late Stanley and Blanche (Kollodge) Winskowski. He grew up in Holdingford, MN and was united in marriage with Josephine Wentland on September 24, 1929 in Holdingford. Following their marriage, they lived in Elmdale, Swanville, Upsala and Little Falls. Edwin was employed at the Hennepin Paper Mill for 43 years. He retired from the mill in 1972. Edwin was an avid outdoors man and loved to fish and hunt.

Survivors include his wife, Josephine of Little Falls; sons, Edwin Winskowski, Jr. of Starbuck, MN, George Winskowski and wife Marlys of Little Falls, Eugene Marsolek and wife Joanne of Duluth, MN; daughters, Loretta Marotte and husband Melvin of Little Falls, Margaret Barnes of Little Falls, Marian Johnson and husband Orville of Minneapolis, MN, Janet Swenson and husband Sexton of Little Falls, and Lucille Marsolek of Modesto, CA; brothers, Jim Winskowski of Seattle, WA, and Louis Winskowski of Modesto, CA; brothers, Jim Winskowski of Seattle, WA, and Louis Winskowski of St. Cloud, MN; sisters, Lucille White of Wanasch, WA and Berdi Mancille of Seattle, WA; 36 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters; one brother; and four grandchildren.

Casketbearers were George Marotte, Michael Barnes, Bradley Johnson, Eric Swenson, Donald Swenson and Todd Winskowski.

Loretta Popp

Loretta (Laura) Popp, age 83, a resident of Foley, MN, died April 5, 1998, at the Foley Nursing Center, Foley.

Funeral services were held April 7 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Foley, with the Rev. Alfred Helt-emes officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Loretta Popp was born February 1, 1915, in Morrill, MN, to Dominic and Anna (Herzing) Stellmach. She married Louis Popp September 19, 1938, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Morrill. She lived on a farm near Rice, MN, until her retirement in 1976 when she moved to Foley. She was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church in Foley, Christian Mothers, Foley and St. Monica’s Society in Buckman, MN.

Survivors include her sons and daughters, Dennis of New Prague, MN, Patricia Novak of Hillman, MN, Laurel Rudnitski of New Prague and Judy Rudnitski of Foley; sisters, Clara Bonovsky of St. Cloud, MN, and Florence Lien of Phoenix, AZ; 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband on October 5, 1995; brothers, Joe, Ben, Bert, Frank, Julius and Clarence; sisters, Susan Miller, Minnie Sauer, Mary Stellmach, Genevieve Schriefels, Rose Sauer and Helen Starr.

Pallbearers were Alan Novak, Barry Popp, Tom Popp, Jim Popp, Dave Rudnitski and Leon Rudnitski.

James M. Zak

James M. Zak, age 56, formerly of Little Falls, MN, died on April 14, 1998, at the University Hospital, Minneapolis, during a liver transplant.

Funeral services were held April 18 at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet, MN.

James was born on May 3, 1941, in Little Falls to S. Barney and Genevieve (Trutwin) Zak. He graduated from Little Falls High School and the University of Minnesota. He was a math teacher and coach in Cloquet for 29 years.

Survivors include his wife Margaret; children, Paul and Lois Zak of Andover, MN, Steve and Jane Amundson, Northfield, MN and Greg and Sandy Lerud, Milaca, MN; six grandchildren; and sisters, Bernadine Kargul, Detroit, MI and Shirley O’Leary, Savannah, GA.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Fred and Richard.

Thomas J. Wagner of Little Falls, MN and Amy M. Melby of Royalton, MN.

James J. Waltman of Swanville, MN and Marcella M. Kliber of Little Falls.

Bernard L. Lashinski and Lyann R. Carlson, both of Little Falls.
