Rose Miller

Rose (Opatz) Miller died February 23, 1998, at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, MN.

Funeral services were held February 28 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus, MN. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Rose was born June 7, 1922, in Rice, MN, to Thomas and Katherine (Oldawoski) Opatz. She married Arthur Miller in 1945 in St. Paul. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in St. Paul and St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus.

Survivors include two daughters, Sandra J. Magers of Cass Lake, MN, and Kathleen A. Rodriguez of Cottage Grove, MN; five grandchildren and brothers and sisters, Martha Shuman of Bowlus, Edwin of Opole, MN, Delphine Gralish of Chisago City, MN, Albena Gerlach of Forest Lake, MN, Peter of South St. Paul and Al of Lisbon, IA.

Rebecca Borash

Rebecca “Becca” Josephine Borash, age three years, nine months, daughter of Wayne and Joyce Borash of Sobieski, died February 24, 1998 as the result of a farming accident.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held February 27 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Sobieski, with Fr. Raymond Donnay officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Rebecca was born May 21, 1994 in Little Falls, MN to Wayne and Joyce (Spanier) Borash. She enjoyed the outdoors, loved to talk, play in the mud, and suck her thumb.

Survivors include her parents, Joyce and Wayne; a brother Jacob, at home; grandparents Duane and Patricia Borash of Lincoln, MN, John and Armella Spanier of Lake Henry, MN, paternal great grandmother Rose Knopik of Little Falls; 20 cousins and 17 aunts and uncles.

Casketbearers were Michael Heinen, Anthony Schlangen, Shawn Bertram, and Kyle Bertram.

Lowell LaRock

Lowell Charles LaRock, age 77, a resident of Randall, MN, died January 7, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

A memorial service was held on January 12 at the Randall Funeral Home in Randall. Burial followed in the Minnesota Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley.

He was born on March 3, 1920, in Black River, NY. For many years he and his wife farmed west of Randall but for the past few years he has lived in town.

Survivors include his son, David LaRock of Adams, NY and two grandchildren.

James H. Hamers

James H. Hamers, age 59, a resident of rural Hillman, MN, died January 9, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were January 13 at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Brennyville. Fr. Tom Olson officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

James Hamers was born September 17, 1938, in Morrill Township, Morrison County, MN to Herman and Vera (Wittwer) Hamers. He married Judith Clark October 15, 1960, at Mason City, IA. He was a lifelong resident of the Ramey, MN, area where he had farmed all of his life. He also worked at the Ramey Creamery for over twenty years, retiring in 1977. He was a member of St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church, Brennyville. He also pitched for the Ramey baseball team for many years. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.

Survivors include his wife, Judith of Hillman; sons and daughter, Randy of Foley, MN; Karen Talberg of Elk River, MN; Robert of Princeton, MN; Richard, Hillman; and nine grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Shirley Crowe, Foley; John of Center, ND; Barbara Wassel, Milaca, MN; JoAnne Galerneault, San Diego, CA; Mary Jurek, Mounds View, MN; Dave, Andover, MN; Sharon Beaudry, Elk River, MN; Kathy Hamers, Bloomington, MN; Alan, Center, ND; Christine Rajkowski of Buckman; and father, Herman of Andover.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Vera; and one brother, Charles.

Gladys Goligowski

Gladys Goligowski, age 100, a resident of Long Prairie, MN (formerly of Browerville, MN) died January 4, 1998, at Long Prairie Memorial Hospital.

Services were held January 9, 1998, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Browerville with Father Kenneth Thielman officiating. Burial was in Christ the King Cemetery, Browerville.

She was born May 4, 1897, in Wadena County, north of Staples, to Robert and Catherine (Whitmarsh) McCartney. She moved with her family by covered wagon to Cottonwood County in southern Minnesota. She grew up and attended school in southern Minnesota with the exception of a short time spent in Todd County while she was in her teens. During this time she met her future husband, Thomas Goligowski. She moved back to Cottonwood County during World War 1. She married Thomas Goligowski, December 13, 1919, in Windom, MN. They lived and farmed near Jeffers until moving to a farm near Browerville in March of 1938. She moved into Browerville in 1974 and in 1993 became a resident of Long Prairie Memorial Nursing Home. Her hobbies included gardening (especially flowers), reading and baking.

Survivors include one son, Ardeen and wife, Vera Goligowski of Browerville; one daughter, Ardes and husband, Neil Adamek of Randall, MN; 10 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and 22 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Thomas, August 1966; an infant son; five brothers, Frank, Roy, Delbert and two in infancy; and eight sisters, Minnie Schopper, Emma Bowden, Mary Caroline (Carrie) Coulson, Winnifred (Winnie) Polzin, Edna (Lottie) Shaw, Elizabeth (Libby) Tabbert, Grace Coulson and one in infancy.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Robert, Steven and Loren Goligowski and David, Larry and Dale Adamek.

Austin L. (Bast) DaBorjock

Austin L. (Bast) DaBorjock, age 53, a resident of Browerville, MN, died January 9, 1998, at the Greater Staples Hospital in Staples, MN.

Funeral services were held January 13 at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery Chapel with Rev. Keith Thompson officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.

Austin L. (Bast) DaBorjock was born December 1, 1944, in Harrisburg, PA. to the late Clarence and June (Reed) Bast. He grew up and attended school in Harrisburg, Penn. In 1963, he entered the U.S. Army and served until his honorable discharge in 1966. Austin was united in marriage to Lila Kemp on January 23, 1965, in Monticello, MN. Upon his discharge, he worked as a machinist in Minneapolis, MN. The couple returned to Harrisburg and lived there from 1969-70 and again in 1976-80. From 1970-1976 they resided in Minneapolis where Austin worked at various jobs. He came to live in Little Falls, MN in 1985 and has resided in Browerville since 1992. Austin enjoyed working on cars, writing poetry and painting. He also enjoyed the things of nature and animals.

Survivors include his companion, Linnie Tousignant; son Troy Bast and companion Jodi of Brainerd, MN; daughter, Michelle Weekley and husband Stewart of Randall, MN; stepson, Daniel Tousignant of Browerville, MN; son-in-law, Charles Arnold of Little Falls; brother, Clarence Bast of New Cumberland, PA; sister, Beverly Moore of Pennsylvania; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Tammy Arnold; and grandson, Nathan Adan Bast.

Pallbearers were Troy Bast, Charles Arnold, Daniel Tousignant, Stewart Weekley, Daniel Lesinski, Lawrence Doble and Jim Carlson.

Margaret Kestner

Margaret Kestner, age 73, a resident of Randall, MN, died January 28, 1998, at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 31 at St. James Catholic Church in Randall with Fr. Al Quade officiating. Burial was in the St. James Cemetery in Randall.

Margaret Marie Kestner was born on December 10, 1924 to the late William and Leona (Betts) Teiml, in Sioux City, IA. She moved to the Randall area with her parents at an early age where she attended rural schools. She graduated from Little Falls High School and then attended business college in St. Cloud. She was united in marriage to James Kestner on August 27, 1946, in Randall. The couple farmed in Parker Township for many years. She also worked at Larson Boat Works and White Mart in Little Falls. Margaret operated a foster home for several years. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Randall and the Randall VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, raising flowers, gardening, knitting, crocheting, crossword puzzles, playing cards and visiting with guests. Her family and grandchildren brought her much joy.

Survivors include her husband, James; a daughter, Joan Miller of Hanover, MN; four sons, James Kestner, Jr., Joe Kestner, Chuck Kestner, all of Randall, and Albert Kestner of Montrose, MN; a foster sister, Arlis Wilson of Tucson, AZ; five foster brothers, John E. Johnson, Lawrence Johnson, Gerald Johnson, Philip Johnson, all of Yakima, WA, and William K. Johnson of Randall; 16 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant son.

LeRoy H. Virnig

LeRoy H. “Roy” Virnig, age 71 a resident of Portland, OR, died January 16, 1998.

A funeral mass was held January 20 at St. Anne Catholic Church in Portland. Interment was in the Willamette National Cemetery in Portland.

Mr. Virnig was born March 7, 1926, in Lastrup, MN. He was a former vice president of manufacturing and advisor for Allied Systems in Sherwood. He married Leis Butler in 1956.

Survivors include his wife; son, Stephen Miljus of Sandy, Anthony of Dallas, OR, and John and Scott, both of Gresham, OR; daughters, Gayle Edgley, Barbara Adams and Leisy, all of Gresham; sisters, Lucille Gress, Elaine Schmidt and Bernice Bullard, all of Portland; and 15 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Leo Virnig of Little Falls, MN.
