Charles 'Joe' Harold Barber
Services will be held today (Thurs.) at 1:00 p.m. for Charles 'Joe' Harold Barber, who worked for the Proctor School District for 35 years as a school bus driver and custodian He died Sun., Aug. 17, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. He was 86.

Joe was born in Duluth to Charles and Elizabeth (Jeffrey) Barber and lived in Midway Township and Proctor most of his life. On December 26, 1942, Charles married Esther Ostman and together they were married for sixty and a half years. Charles served in the Army as a private in the Motor School Detachment in Fort Riley, Kansas.

He worked with the Civilian Conservation Corps, Soderberg Hatchery and Great Lakes Ore Boats. He retired from the Proctor School District in June of 1978. Charles loved to fish, pitch horseshoes, walk, garden and pick agates. Joe was a pro in dousing (witching for water) for local wells. He was always there to help; building houses, garages, or anything that needed his help.

Charles is preceded in death by his parents, sisters, Elizabeth 'Dimpy' and Charlotte and a brother, George.

Surviving are his wife, Esther; sons, Robert (Connie) and David (Joan) of Duluth and a daughter, Diane (Dirk) Carlson of Saginaw; four grandchildren, Ron (Mary) and Jeff Carlson, Emily (Chris) Benser and Laura Barber; 3 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 12 Noon until the 1:00 p.m. service Thursday in Bell Brothers Chapel.

Burial will be in Augustana Lutheran Cemetery. Military Honors will be accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Ruby Angeline Anderson Tannehill
Ruby Angeline Anderson Tannehill, who was born, baptized, raised, worked and graduated from Proctor, died Thurs., July 31, 2003, in Kalispell, Mont. She was 77.

She was born to Melvin and Lena (Haugen) Anderson. On Dec. 27, 1953 she married James Tannehill.

She is survived by her husband James, daughter Laurie (Gary) Morrison, sons Scott (Martha) and Tom (Lisa) and seven grandchildren, all of Kalispell, sisters LeVina (Walter) Carlson of Cloquet, Marie (Chester) Anderson of Aurora and Mildred (Arnold) Jarvimaki of Seattle, and a brother Floyd (Judy) Anderson of Laporte.

Services were held in Kalispell.

Brian C. 'Duck' Evjen
Don and Nina Kolenda of Munger are mourning the death of their son-in-law, Brian C. 'Duck' Evjen of Silver Bay. He died Sat., Aug. 16, 2003, at the age of 43.

He was born June 11, 1960, to Clifford and Betty (Knitter) Evjen in Two Harbors and was a lifelong resident of Silver Bay. After graduating from Kelley High School in 1978, and while attending night classes at Duluth Vo-Tech, he served a four-year plumbing apprenticeship with A.W. Kuettel & Sons at Reserve Mining Company, and later was employed by Reserve. He worked for a short time in Buffalo, Minn., where he earned his Master Plumber certification, then opened Duck's Plumbing & Heating in Silver Bay. In 1991, he went to work at the Minnesota Veteran's Home to prepare it for opening, and continued working there until his death. Duck was a member of Sychar Lutheran Church, the Silver Beaver Gun Club, the Rowdy Riders Snowmobile Club and Softball Team, and the Camp Snoopy Hunting Club, and was active in Silver Bay Youth Hockey, and had served on the Silver Bay Rescue Squad.

Duck is also survived by his wife Robin, son Jake, his parents Clifford and Betty of Silver Bay, brothers-in-law David, Ron and Brad Kolenda, all of Munger, and Richard Kolenda of Proctor, a sister and two brothers, a sister-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery in Beaver Bay Township.

Rose E. Boberg
Rose E. Boberg, who was born in Proctor and was a 1936 graduate of Proctor High School, died Wed., Aug. 20, 2003, in Duluth. She was 85.

She was born to Conrad and Palma (Husom) Hereid, and was a lifelong area resident.

She is survived by her husband John of Duluth, daughters Dawn (Robert) Stewart of Manchester, Mass., Joan (Roger) Schulstad of St. Paul, and Nann (William) Eckman of Superior, Wis., sister-in-law Helen Hereid of Duluth, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and a grand puppy, Grace Rose, 'G.G.' who visited Rose often.

Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Park Mausoleum.

June Alva (Bilsey) Larsen
June Alva (Bilsey) Larsen, who was born in Proctor, died Aug. 21, 2003, after suffering from Alzheimer's and cancer. She was 78.

June was born on June 3, 1925, to Alva and Nels Bilsey. She attended Mahtowa and Carlton schools and was honored as homecoming queen in high school. She worked at St. Luke's for over 20 years, retiring as a manager in the Personnel Department.

June is survived by her husband of 36 years Vernon, four children, four grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was at Augustana Cemetery.

Clara A. (Schmidt) Robinson
Clara A. (Schmidt) Robinson, who graduated from Proctor high school, died, Sat., Aug. 30, 2003. She was 89.

The Burnett, Minn. resident was born in Duluth and graduated from Duluth State Teacher's College. She taught in schools at Verdon, Tomahawk Lumber Camp, Libby and Cedar Valley in northern Minnesota before going to St. Paul's Lutheran School in Truman, Minn., where she taught from 1944 until 1982. She was named teacher of the year in Truman in 1969. Since retiring, she has lived in Burnett.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Olga Robinson of Duluth, five nieces, six great nephews and four great nieces.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Robert C. Paulson
A memorial service for Robert C. Paulson will take place Sat., Sept. 6 at 11 a.m. at the Johnson Mortuary Chapel in Duluth. Mr. Paulson, formerly of Lindahl Rd. in Proctor, died Saturday evening Aug. 30 in Duluth. He was 89.

Bob was born March 31, 1914, lived most of his life in this area, and was variously employed at the Coolerator Plant, Naegle Signs, Pierson Paint Co., Adolph Lumber Co., and as a self-employed carpenter and cabinet maker. On April 16, 1938, he married Myrtle Taraldsen. They resided in Calif. for a short time before returning to the Duluth area and taking up residence in the home that Bob built on the Lindahl Rd. They had four children. During WW II, Bob served with the U.S. Army in the Aleutian Islands. Myrtle passed away in 1968. In July 1972, Bob married Matilda Brandenhoff and they made their home in Midway Township. Matilda passed away in 2002, and Bob was a patient of Nopeming Nursing Center and then Benedictine Health Center until his death.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents Clarence and Alice (Pierson) Paulson, and his son Rick Paulson, who passed away in 1981.

He is survived by his children Roberta Ann (Bruce) Johanson of Mich., Sandra Lynn Peterson of Ariz., and Steven (Brenda) Paulson of Canyon, Minn., two granddaughters, a grandson, a great-granddaughter, his sister June Frey of Duluth, stepson Gerald Brandenhoff of Blooming-ton, Minn., stepdaughters Paula Lundberg (David) of Calif., and Cindy Brandenhoff of St. Paul, and many nieces and nephews.

At the request of the deceased, cremation will take place and there will be no visitation.

Dushie "Duke" Radich
Services were held Sunday for Dushie "Duke" Radich, who was the former owner of the Pike Lake Standard Oil Station. He died Tues., Sept. 2, 2003 in a Duluth hospital. He was 82.

He was born in Carson Lake near Hibbing. He was a 1939 graduate of Denfeld High School and an avid bowler and fisherman on the shores of Lake Superior. Duke was a World War II Army veteran. He married Frances Noel on Sept. 3, 1944 in New York City.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Frances, a daughter, a son, a sister, a foster brother, four grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Burial at Ft. Snelling Cemetery.

Joyce J. Saarela
Steven D. Saarela of Saginaw is saddened by the death of his mother, Joyce J. Saarela. She died Mon., July 28, 2003 at the age of 69.

She was born in Duluth and attended the former St. Jean's School and later married Don E. Saarela in Duluth on Sept. 22, 1951. She worked in housekeeping at the Duluth Clinic and later retired as supervisor of housekeeping at First Bank Place.

She is also survived by her husband, Don E., a daughter, a brother, a sister, four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, an aunt and her loving dog, Bambi.

Burial at Oneota Cemetery. Memorials preferred.

John H. Isaacson
John H. Isaacson who was born, raised and graduated from Proctor High school in 1946, succumbed to cancer in his Cocoa, Fla., home June 27. He was 75.

John was an Army veteran of the Korean War and was a Graves Registration Specialist. He was formerly employed by the J.I. Case, Co., of Moline, Ill, Kewannee Elevator & Machinery Co., of Kewanee and Cape Canaveral, Fla. John was the editor of technical documents.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl A. and Pearl Isaacson.

He is survived by his brothers, Carl of Ill., Neil of Tenn. and Peter of Duluth, and his sister Beatrice Gordon of Ariz.

Karen P. Olson
Services were held for Karen P. Olson. She died Sat., July 26, 2003 in Proctor at the age of 56.

She was born in Cloquet. Even though Karen was physically challenged, she was a bright spot that touched many lives.

Karen is survived by aunts, cousins and other relatives and caregivers.

Interment at Maple Grove Cemetery, Cloquet.
