Harry Ahlin

Harry Everett Ahlin, age 88, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Marshall, MN, died January 28, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held January 30 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with the Rev. Miles Alexander officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.

Harry was born on December 10, 1909 in Stockholm, Sweden, to the late Mr. and Mrs. John Ahlin. When Harry was five his family moved from Stockholm to Proctor, MN. He attended school in Proctor and graduated in 1927. After graduating from high school Harry attended the University of Minnesota-Duluth where he worked for the railroad for four years during the summer months. He received his teaching degree in 1931, and began teaching in Bagley, MN. He taught and coached in Bagley from 1932 until 1936. In 1937 Harry began teaching in Tipton, IA. He was united in marriage to Margaret Nelson on August 13, 1939 at the Methodist Church in Proctor, MN. After marriage the couple lived in Tipton, IA until 1943. They later moved to Marshall, MN where they resided for over 40 years. Harry continued teaching industrial education and coaching football and track. The couple retired in 1990 and moved to Little Falls and lived at the Edgewater Terrace where they enjoyed watching the river and feeding the ducks. Margaret passed away December 31, 1992, and in 1995 Harry became a resident of the St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls residing there until his death. Harry enjoyed hunting, fishing, going to the family cabin, picking berries and making wine. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and helping them in any way he could.

Survivors include his sons, John E. and wife Carol of Little Falls; Peter L. and wife Laura of Spooner, WI; daughters, Lynn Hutchinson and Susan Nichols of Seattle, WA; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, a brother in childhood and two sisters, Wally Whiterabbit and Eva Salomi.

Herman M. Hamers

Herman M. Hamers, age 93, a resident of Anoka, MN, formerly of Little Falls, MN, and Ramey, MN, died June 29, 1998, at Mercy Hospital in Anoka.

Funeral services were held July 2 at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, Brennyville. The Fr. Thomas Olson officiated. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Herman Hamers was born July 19, 1904, in Little Falls, to John and Mary (Winker) Hamers. He married Vera Wittwer February 14, 1933, at Little Falls. He had lived and farmed in Ramey for over 30 years before moving to Little Falls, and, for the past three years, had lived in Anoka. He worked as a carpenter for Wittwer Construction and also enjoyed cabinet making. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Brennyville.

Survivors include his sons and daughters, Shirley and Dean Crowe, Foley, MN, John and Amy, Center, ND, Barb and Gerald Wassel, Milaca, MN, Joann and Ralph Galarneault, San Diego, CA, Mary and Jim Jurek, Mounds View, MN, David and Lila, Anoka, MN, Sharon and Paul Beaudry, Elk River, MN, Kathy Hamers, Bloomington, MN, Allan and Barb, Center, ND, Christine and John Rajkowski, Buckman, MN; 28 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Judy Hamers, Ramey, Debbie Hamers, Burnsville; and sister, Clara Glubka, Clintonville, WI.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Vera, February 1, 1994; sons, Lawrence, Charles and Jim; brother and sisters, Leonard, Rose and Caroline.

Pallbearers were Jim Jurek, Dean Crowe, Paul Beaudry, Gerald Wassel, John Rajkowski, and Ralph Galarneault.

Thomas Baumgartner

Thomas Joseph Baumgartner, age 38, a resident of rural Motley, MN, passed away June 29, 1998.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at held July 7 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Motley with Father Roberg Landsberger officiating. Visitation will be on Monday evening from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Brenny Funeral Home in Staples with Parish Prayers at 8 p.m.

Rachel I. Greenwaldt

Rachel I. Greenwaldt, age 83, a resident of Staples, MN, died June 30, 1998, at Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd, MN.

Funeral services were held July 3 at the Brenny Funeral Home Chapel in Staples, with Reverend Dan Almquist officiating. Burial followed at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples.

Rachel Irene Greenwaldt was born on May 13, 1915, in Byron Township in Cass County, MN, to the late Albert and Fidelia (Oliver) Williams and grew up in the Staples area. She married Elmer Greenwaldt on April 3, 1931, in Long Prairie, MN. They raised 10 children and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. They lived most of their married life in the Staples area. She was a volunteer and a member of the Staples Hospital and Home Auxiliary. She belonged to the Senior Citizens groups in both Staples and Motley, and participated in the United Methodist Women’s Group.

Survivors include his six sons, Lester (Lucille) Greenwaldt of Moscow, ID, Melvin Greenwaldt of Dallas, TX, Gordon Greenwaldt of Menhaga, MN, Herman (Delores) Greenwaldt of Maple Grove, MN, Richard (Annette) Greenwaldt of Brooklyn Park, MN, and Peter (Lynne) Greenwaldt of Rapid City, SD; three daughters, Ardith (LeRoy) Doroff of Randall, MN, Dorothy (Gary) Schmidt of Staples, and Verona (Mel) Aleshire of Lincoln, MN; 31 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a daughter, Frances Potter, one grandchild, four sisters and three brothers.

Joseph Czech
Joseph P. Czech, age 85, a resident of Bowlus, MN, died July 11, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 14 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus with Father Laurn Virnig officiating. Burial was at the parish cemetery. Military rites were provided by the Bowlus American Legion Post 642 and VFW Post 1112 of Little Falls.

Joseph was born March 16, 1913, in Elmdale Township to Vincent and Elizabeth (Fussy) Czech. He was raised and attended rural school in Upsala, MN. Following school he lived in the area where he farmed. In March of 1942 he joined the U.S. Army. He was discharged in September of 1945. Following his discharge, he continued farming until retiring in 1978. Joseph was a supervisor of Elmdale Township for 17 years, usher for his church for many years, life member of Little Falls VFW Post 1112, Opole Catholic War Vet and Bowlus American Legion Post 642 where he served as Post Commander and Adjutant.

Survivors include his sisters, Helen Biniek of St. Paul, MN, and Connie Czech and Julia Czech, both of Bowlus, and his brother, John Czech of Anchorage, AK.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Casketbearers were Jerome Fussy, Tom Fussy, John Tchida, Raymond Czech, Michael Reis and Alphonse Pollock.

Carolyn Beck
Carolyn Beck, age 96, a resident of Foley, MN, and formerly of rural Rice, MN, died July 10, 1998, at Foley Nursing Center in Foley.

Funeral services were held July 14 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Ramey, MN. The Rev. John Ramsbacher officiated. Burial was in the Lone Pine Cemetery, Morrill, MN.

Carolyn Beck was born December 1, 1901, in Muscatine, IA, to William and Maude (Scott) Miller. She married Harold Beck August 30, 1925, in Morrill Township, Morrison County. She had lived in Swatara from 1927 to 1942 and had lived and farmed in Graham Township, Benton County, since then. She had lived in the Foley Nursing Center since 1994. She was the volunteer ‘Sunshine Lady’, greeter at the Foley Nursing Center. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Ramey.

Survivors include her son, Clifford and Frances of Sauk Rapids; and daughter, Betty Winscher of Royalton, MN; brothers, Rauland Miller and Raymond Miller of Morrill; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Charlotte Winscher.

Honorary pallbearers were Damon Winscher and Brent Ihnen.

Pallbearers were Mark Ihnen, Chris Burkhard, Bill Winscher, Carly Winscher, Randy Winscher, and Lee Winscher.

Richard Kurtz
Richard Kurtz, age 66, a resident of Pierz, MN, died July 6, 1998, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 10 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Ken Brenny officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Richard was born on September 6, 1931, in Granite Township to Joe and Elizabeth (Waytashek) Kurtz. He was united in marriage with Shirley Nohner on October 8, 1960. He farmed near Pierz until retiring in 1992. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, ricing, playing cards, and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley of Pierz; children, Caroline Welle of Foley, MN, Janet Kurtz of Royalton, MN, Donna Kurtz of Rice, MN, Sharon Toscano and husband Amauri of Ansonia, CT, Wayne Kurtz and wife Theresa of Pierz, Linda Kurtz of Hutchinson, MN, and, Nancy Kurtz of Pierz; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Irene, Frances and Viola.

Casketbearers were Jerry Eller, John Kurtz, Kenny Jedlicki, Gary Meyer, Joe Nohner and Alan Nohner.

Irene O. Juetten
Irene O. Juetten, age 73, a resident of rural Hillman, MN, died Thursday, July 9, 1998, at St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, MN.

Funeral services were held July 13, at Bethany Lutheran Church, Ramey. The Rev. John Ramsbacher officiated. Burial was in the Lone Pine Cemetery, Morrill.

Irene Juetten was born July 14, 1924, in Hillman Township, Morrison County, MN, to George and Helen (Florek) Emerson. She married Alponse Juetten August 25, 1956, at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in St. Paul, MN. She had lived in Minneapolis until 1959. She had worked as an inspector for Telex Mfg. in St. Paul for 19 years. In 1959, the couple moved to rural Hillman where they farmed. She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ramey where she was a member of the Ladies Aid. Irene enjoyed fishing, gardening, cards, berry picking and cooking.

Survivors include her son, Gary of Hillman; sister, Alice Johnson, Pierz; and a granddaughter, BethyJo of Hillman.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Al, August 21, 1993; and a brother, Norman Emerson.

Pallbearers were Kenny Juetten, Ronnie Johnson, Byron Waytashek, Larry Emerson, Dennis Johnson and Jerry Juetten.

Honorary pallbearers were Laurette Waytashek, Hannah Johnson, Bob Juetten, Wayne Juetten and Ralph Emerson.
