Albina Woitalla

Albina Woitalla, age 82, a resident of Harding, MN died October 15, 1997 at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz, MN.

Funeral services were held October 18, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding with Father Roger Thoennes officiating.

Lector was Fred Jelinski.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Albina was born March 30, 1915 in Elmdale, MN to Philip and Mary (Schichta) Koroll.

She was united in marriage with Joachim Woitalla on October 10, 1933 in Elmdale.

Following their marriage, they moved to Harding, where they farmed.

Albina was a great cook and cooked for many church functions and many weddings.

She loved her garden, cooking and baking.

Survivors include a son, Donald of Harding; daughters, Rose Jelinski and husband Lawrence of Freedhem, MN, Grace Manlick and husband Leroy of Little Falls, MN; sisters, Agnes Knopik of Little Falls and Margaret Dobis of St. Anna, MN; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband (October 22, 1996); brothers, Mike, Stanley, Peter and Roman Koroll; and a sister, Mary Schmidtz.

Casketbearers were grandsons: Larry, Danny, James and Tom Jelinski, David and Mike Manlick.

Carroll F. Nelson

Carroll F. Nelson, 84 year-old resident of Pillager, MN, passed away October 10, 1997 at the Northwoods Care Center in Brainerd, MN.

Memorial services were held October 13 at the First Baptist Church in Pillager.

Reverend Robert Osell and Reverend Carl Lindman officiated.

Interment was at the Wildwood Cemetery in Pillager.

Carroll was born July 17, 1913 to Carl A. and Anna (Borgstrom) Nelson in Rail Prairie Township.

In March of 1939 he married Lucille Kunkel of Rail Prairie Township.

He was a logger, farmer and construction worker and he lived all his life in the area.

He was very conscientious at whatever task he was involved in.

His main concerns were his family and his church, First Baptist Church of Pillager.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille; sons, Carroll Dease (Butch) of Brainerd, Richard (Kathy) and Joe of Cushing; daughter, Karen (Lanny) Scearcy of Brainerd, Becky Nelson of Wisconsin, Anna (Jim) Vroom of Chandler, AZ; a brother, Sigfred of Cushing, MN; a sister, Verna (Gebert) of Audobon, MN; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Victor, and a son, Freddie.

Sister Irene Germer

Sister Irene (Mary Cleophas) Germer, age 87, died on October 13, 1997, at the St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, MN.

Her funeral was at St. Francis Convent in Little Falls, MN on October 16.

Sister Irene Germer was born on October 23, 1909, in Detroit Lakes, MN.

She was the second of three children born to the late William and Pearl (Sneath) Germer.

She attended Interstate Business College, Fargo, N.D.

She worked as manager of the statistical department for what is known today as the Pioneer Mutual Life Insurance Company from 1926-1933.

She was accepted as a Franciscan Sister of Little Falls on August 10, 1934, and given the religious name, Sister Mary Cleophas.

She returned to her baptismal name in 1976.

She made first vows on August 12, 1936, and final vows on August 12, 1939.

She celebrated 60 years as a Franciscan Sister in 1994.

Sister Irene attended the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, MN, and the College of St. Teresa, Winona, MN from which she received a bachelor of science degree.

She received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Notre Dame, Notre Dame, IN.

Sister Irene taught at St. Francis High School, Little Falls, from 1940 to 1952.

From 1950-1952 she also worked part-time in the office at St. Gabriel’s Hospital, Little Falls.

She was office manager at St. Francis Hospital, Breckenridge, MN, 1952-1956 and at Trinity Memorial Hospital, Cudahy, WI, 1957 - 1960.

She returned to teach at St. Francis High School, 1960-1973.

Sister Irene was secretary general of the Franciscan Sisters, 1972-1976.

She ministered as parish secretary for Nativity Parish, Fargo, ND 1976-1977.

From 1977-1984 she was administrative secretary, St. Francis Home, Breckenridge.

In 1984 she moved to Minneapolis and served as secretary to three members of the administrative board of the Franciscan Sisters.

In the fall of 1987, she moved to the Franciscan Resident, St. Cloud, where she volunteered at Holy Spirit School and Parish.

Survivors include her brother, John, Billings, OK and her Sisters in religious life...

Kenneth H. Otremba

Representative Kenneth H. Otremba, age 48, a resident of rural Long Prairie, MN died at his residence in Reynolds Township on September 4, 1997.

Funeral services were held September 6 at St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Long Prairie, MN with Father Mark Stang officiating.

Burial took place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Long Prairie.

Kenneth was born October 29, 1948 in Little Falls, MN to Herman and Armella (Dehler) Otremba.

He grew up in Buckman.

He served six years in the Navy where he attended Navy Electronics School for two years and was a radar technician.

He served two tours of duty in Vietnam.

He married Mary Ellen Dinkel, April 19, 1974 at St. Mary’s Church in Long Prairie, MN.

Since his marriage he lived most of his life in Long Prairie.

He farmed in Reynolds Township since 1975.

He was a Reynolds Township officer for four years, and Todd County Commissioner for six years, and was currently serving his second term for the State House of Representatives.

He enjoyed carpentry, having built his own home, including harvesting trees from his own land.

He also enjoyed politics, and most important, his family activities.

He was a member of St. Mary of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Parish Council, Long Prairie VFW and American Legion Posts, Board Chairman of Elmdale Mutual Insurance Company, Farmers Union, Ducks Unlimited, and Pheasants Forever and many other organizations.

Survivors include his wife Mary Ellen of Long Prairie; four children, Andrew, Timothy, Kateri and Elizabeth, all at home; his mother, Armella Otremba, Buckman, MN; nine brothers and two sisters and spouses, Ruth Bolster, St. Louis Park, MN, Marilyn (Dick) Petrin, Milaca, MN, Ray Otremba, Lakeville, MN, Mike (Pat) Otremba, Glenwood, MN, Mark (Kathy) Otremba, Brainerd, MN, Bernie (Sue) Otremba, Buckman, MN, Dan (Cheryl) Otremba, Spokane, WA, George Otremba, Buckman, MN, Kevin Otremba, Pierz, Galen (Julie) Otremba, Pierz, and John (Shelly) Otremba, Farmington, MN.

He was preceded in death by his father, Herman Otremba.

Casketbearers were Gary Muenzhuber, Jim Adamatiz, Tim Butler, Randy Brown, Leyton Fontaine, Rick Krueger, Sue Farmer and Dave Asmus.

Honorary casketbearers were Minnesota State Legislators.

Bernice Upton

Bernice C. Upton, age 84, a resident of Minnetonka, MN, died September 2, 1997, at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, MN.

A gravesite service will be held September 8 at Calvary Cemetery in Little Falls, MN, with Fr. Nick Landsberger of St. Mary’s Catholic Church officiating.

Bernice was born June 9, 1913, in St. Cloud, MN, to parents Michael and Emma (Garney) Robischon.

She graduated from Little Falls High School.

She worked at Camp Ripley and also in Duluth, MN, and St. Paul, MN.

She married Robert Upton of Evansville, WI, in 1940 in Minneapolis, MN.

They lived in numerous locations while working for the National Park Service.

Robert died in 1966 and Bernice moved to Denver, CO, and on to Santa Fe, NM.

She moved to Minnetonka five years ago.

Survivors include her brother, Richard Robischon and wife Beulah of Denver; nephew, James Robischon and niece, Monica Dorn of Denver; cousins, Jeanne Murphy and Thomas Murphy of St. Louis Park, Patricia Gozola of Little Falls, formerly of Crystal, MN, and Jerry Nagel of Little Falls.

Elsie Bartkovich

Elsie Bartkovich, age 91, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died September 3, 1997, at the Lutheran Home in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held September 5 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, with Father Leroy Kremer officiating.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Elsie was born October 22, 1905, in Opole, MN, to the late John and Francis (Sowieja) Krystosek.

She worked in Minneapolis prior to her marriage to Walter Bartkovich on June 3, 1931.

Following her marriage, she moved to Little Falls where she worked as a cook at several restaurants.

She enjoyed crocheting, cooking and reading.

She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and the Christian Mothers.

Survivors include a brother, Tony Krystosek of Chicago, IL; two sisters, Angeline Kloss of St. Cloud, MN, and Frances Millay of Minneapolis, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Walter in June of 1987; a son, Eugene Bartkovich in 1983.

Casketbearers were Joe Younk, George Shimshock, Joni Swanson, Michael Millay and Rhonda Wilson.

Melvin Christensen

Melvin Christensen, CWO U.S. Army Retired Criminal Investigator, died August 15, 1997, at his home in Columbia, SC.

Interment will take place at the Randall, MN, cemetery at a later date.

Melvin was born April 29, 1917, in Grand Rapids, MN.

He graduated in 1936 from Little Falls High School.

He was a veteran of WWII, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War.

He was the holder of two Bronze Stars, Combat Infantry Badge, numerous other awards and commendations.

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, Masons and numerous law enforcement associations.

Survivors include his sons, George E. Christensen and wife Evelyan, Robert L. Christensen and wife Judith and Terry L. Christensen and wife Nancy; sister, Iris Dauphin; brothers, Norman Christensen and George Brock; grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a niece, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Christensen; mother, Ella (Jones) Brock; brothers, Norman Brock, Kenneth Brock, Robert Christensen and former wife, Erna (Wise) Ghinter.
