Beryl Michaelson
Dr. Beryl Frances Michaelson, age 79, a resident of the Lake Shamineau area in rural Motley, MN, died August 31, 1997, as a result of injuries sustained by an automobile accident.
Funeral services were held September 4 at St. Michael’s Church in Motley with Fr. Robert Landsberger officiating. Burial was in Humboldt, IA.

Beryl was born on April 30, 1918, in Humboldt to the late Manly and Viva (Truax) Michaelson. She graduated from Humboldt High School and went to Iowa State Teachers College where she received her B.A. in 1942. She taught in rural schools in Iowa and at the school for the Indian Health Service at Selawik, Alaska to earn money for medical training. She received her medical degree from the University of Iowa and then returned to Alaska as a physician for the Indian Health Services in Mount Edgecumbe, Kanakanak, and Bethel, Alaska. One of her proudest achievements was the initiation of a successful program of ambulatory chemotherapy for tuberculosis. After five years, she returned to Iowa and went into private practice in Humboldt, where she practiced medicine from 1954 to 1973. She then worked at the Indian Health Services in Eagle Butte, SD, and Cass Lake, MN, before going into private practice in 1980 with her brother, Don, in Los Angeles, CA. While in California she was the examining physician for the motion picture industry, serving 20th Century Fox and MGM Studios in Hollywood. She is remembered for many hours of volunteer service.

Survivors include two brothers, Dr. Don Michaelson and wife Solveig of Vista, CA, and Dr. Manly Michaelson and wife Doris of Bellevue, IA; nine nephews and six nieces; a special friend, Dorothy Rice of Humboldt and special friends, the Sisters of Presentation of Dubuque, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Casketbearers were Frank Blake, Joe Lange, David Jackson, Dick Auger, Dick Willoughby and Larry Lukoskie.

Ida Brummer

Ida Frieda Brummer, age 97, a resident of Staples, MN, died September 2, 1997, at the Greater Staples Care Center.

Services were September 5 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples with Father Lauren Germann officiating.

Burial followed at Calvary Cemetery in Wadena, MN.

Ida was born on August 31, 1900, to the late Henry and Anna (Gremmert) Hanebuth in Compton Township of Otter Tail County, MN.

She was united in marriage to William Brummer, on January 7, 1920, in Wadena.

She moved to Staples in 1923 where she was a homemaker and assisted her husband at the William Brummer Insurance Agency.

Ida enjoyed her family and family ceremonies.

She was a member of Sacred Heart Church where she was active in church dinners and fabricating costumes for school plays.

She was the last of the charter members of the VFW Auxiliary, Robert W. Hand Post 1910 of Staples which was organized in March of 1931.

She served as its president in 1931, 1932 and 1945.

Survivors include daughters, Rosella Hall of Merrifield, MN, and Lauretta Hanson and husband Wally of Paynesville, MN; sons, Col. James Brummer, Ret. and wife Josephine of St. Joseph, MN, and William Brummer and wife Bernice of Red Lake Falls, MN; sisters, Leona Wiebe of Battle Lake, MN, and Dorothy Larson of St. Helens, OR; brothers, Hans Hanebuth of Ottertail, MN, and William “Bob” Hanebuth of West Covina, CA; 21 grandchildren, 45 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband; one son, Warren; 10 brothers and sisters and a great-great-granddaughter.

Herbert Counter

Herbert Counter, age 64, a resident of Cold Spring, MN, died September 2, 1997, at his residence from cancer.

Funeral services were held September 5 at St. Boniface Church, Cold Spring, with Pastor Ron Bockhaus officiating.

Herbert was born September 19, 1932, in Avon, MN, to George and Emma (Braun) Counter.

He married Patricia Bjorklund on January 14, 1989, in Our Savior Lutheran Church, Albany.

Herb was self-employed as a carpenter and mason contractor.

He owned and operated the Pizza Shop, Albany, and also worked for the City of Albany and the Albany Golf Course.

He served in the Army during the Korean War, and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Cold Spring.

Survivors include his wife and children, Barbara Rose of South Haven, H. Jeffrey of Van Horne, IA, Lori Deschene of Argyle, Brenda Safranski of Argyle, Karen Olson of Warren, Shari Safranski of Thief River Falls, MN, Stacie Nelson of Warren, Amy Klopp of Argyle and Pammy Durand of Argyle; stepchildren, Joel Lemke of Minneapolis, MN, Jamie Lemke of Minneapolis and Jody Boisen of St. Cloud, MN; brother, George of Prior Lake, MN; sisters, Johanna Ostendorf of Fayetteville, NC, and Helen Sannes of Marion, IA; 17 grandchildren and one step-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold and William and sister, Maude Lease.

Pallbearers were Leslie Rose, John Deschene, Daryl Olson, David Safranski, Ray Safranski and David Nelson.

Leo Retka

Leo Retka, age 73, a resident of Bowlus, MN, died August 4, 1998 at his home.

A Mass of Christian burial was held August 8 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN with Fr. Gregory Mastey officiating.

Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Leo was born September 8, 1924 in Swan River Township, Morrison County, MN to the late Charles and Theresa (Singer) Retka.

He grew up in Swan River Township and attended country school.

Leo stayed on the family farm and farmed all his life.

He enjoyed visiting and was a member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale.

Survivors include a brother, Edward Retka of Bowlus; sister, Helen Fussy and husband Theophil of Bowlus; seven nieces and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, John, Henry, Ted, Frank and Thomas Retka.

Robert White

Robert F. White, age 86, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died August 2, 1998, at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls.

A graveside service was held August 6 at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, Little Falls, with military rites conducted by Little Falls American Legion Post #46.

Robert was born July 27, 1912, in Elk River, MN, to the late James and Mayme (Busch) White.

He entered the U.S. Army in April, 1942, and served in the Aleutian Islands in the Philippines.

He received the Good Conduct Medal 44, American Theater Service Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Ribbon and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two bronze stars.

He was honorably discharged in November of 1945.

He worked at a culvert company in St. Paul for a number of years.

Survivors include his brother, Norwood and wife Kathy of Harrisburg, PA; sister-in-law, Winifred White of Little Falls and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Sylvester, LeRoy, Charles and Luverne White; and a sister, Phoebe White.
