David Goebel
David Lee Goebel, age 55, a resident of Pike Creek Township, MN, died August 16, 1998, at his home.
Mass of Christian burial was held on August 19 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN, with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery. Military rites were provided by American Legion Post 46 and VFW Post 1112.

David was born on October 19, 1942, in Minot, ND, to Donald and Grace Baker. In 1946, he moved from North Dakota to Detroit, MI, where he was adopted by Matt Goebel. He was raised in Michigan until he enlisted in the United States Navy in November of 1959, where he served aboard the U.S.S. Boston for four years. After the Navy, he returned to Detroit and then went to Minnesota where he met his wife Dianna. They were married 23 years. David was a member of American Legion Post 46 and he was a lifelong member of VFW Post 1112 where he served as past Commander. He enjoyed walking, reading, and football.

Survivors include his mother, Grace Goebel of Minneapolis, MN; wife, Dianna Goebel of Little Falls, MN; brothers, Carl Baker of Tuscan, AZ, Melvin Baker and wife Janis of Fort Dodge, IA, Tom Goebel and wife Murial of Little Falls, Charlie Goebel and wife Cindy of Little Falls, Daniel Goebel and wife Kay of Minneapolis, MN, Carl Goebel and wife Cindy of Forest Lake, MN; sisters, Margie Mulvihill of Billings, MT, and Elizabeth Lauer and husband Robert of Columbia Heights, MN; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Baker, Sr.; stepfather, Matthias Goebel and brothers, Donald, Jr., and Kenny.

Casketbearers were Matt, Jeremy, Michael, Patrick, Christopher and Steven Goebel.

Simon Ziwicki
Simon Ziwicki, age 76, a resident of Royalton, MN, died August 13, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.
Mass of Christian Burial was August 17, 1998, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton with Father Laurn Virnig officiating. Burial was at the Camp Ripley Military Cemetery. Military rites were provided by the Royalton American Legion Post 137.

Simon was born October 28, 1921, in Palmer Township in Minnesota to Frank and Rose (Landowski) Ziwicki. He married Florence (Hoeschen) Welters on August 8, 1970, in Royalton. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Royalton American Legion Post 137. He worked at the Woodcraft Company and was also employed as a carpenter and electrician until he retired in 1984.

Survivors include his wife, Florence of Royalton; children, Ruth Janski and husband Robert of Rice, MN, Linda Janski and husband Ralph of Sartell, MN, Neil Welters and wife Fran of Springfield, IL, Connie Sobania and husband Alphonse of Foley, MN, and Glen Welters and wife Maria of Katy, TX; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and sisters and brothers, Mary Stachowski, Albert, Casmere and Pauline Sobania, all of Foley.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lawrence and sisters, Elizabeth Frank and Margaret Wolf.

Casketbearers were Robert and Ralph Janski, Neil and Glen Welters and Alphonse and Ryan Sobania.

Irene Oldakowski
Irene Rose (Lashinski) Oldakowski, age 75, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died August 12, 1998, at St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN, of a short illness of cancer.

Mass of Christian burial was held August 15 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Flensburg, MN, with Father Anthony Kroll officiating. Burial was at Sacred Heart parish cemetery.

Irene was born March 28, 1923, in Swan River Township to Albert and Louise (Gwost) Lashinski. She was united in marriage to Albin Oldakowski on August 24, 1948, in Sobieski, MN. They lived on a dairy farm in Pike Creek Township, near Little Falls, where they raised their eight children. After Albin’s death in 1979, she continued to farm with the two youngest sons until 1988. She then moved to a new home on the farm. She loved her home, family, grandchildren, gardening and farm life. She will always be remembered for her homemade bread, her lovely ferns and her beautiful smile. She was a member of the Rosary Sodality and Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include her sons, David Oldakowski and wife Deborah of Marion, IA, Ernest Oldakowski and wife Mary, Edwin and wife Kelly and Gary Oldakowski, all of Little Falls; daughters, Marlene Knopik and husband Bob of Little Falls, Jan Kimman and husband Clint of Pierz, MN, Marge Loidolt and husband Marne of Pierz and Sharon Moehring and husband Scott of Circle Pines, MN; brothers, Fred Lashinski and wife Florence of St. Cloud, Dan Lashinski and wife Fran of Rogers, MN, David Lashinski and wife Leona of Avon, MN, Jerry Lashinski and wife Jeanette of Anoka, MN, Eugene Lashinski and wife Irene of Albany, MN, and Jim Lashinski of Denver, CO; sisters, Bernice Euteneuer and husband Victor of Holdingford, MN, Helen Brezinka and husband Louie of Coon Rapids, MN, Jeanette Wippler and husband Don of Cushing, MN, and Diane Zylka and husband Larry of Menomonie, WI, and 29 grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albin; parents; brother, Raymond and grandson, Tommy Knopik.

Casketbearers were grandsons, Lance Knopik, Steve Kimman, Michael Loidolt, Jason Oldakowski, Greg Knopik, Scott Kimman and Craig Oldakowski.

Honorary casketbearers were brothers, Fred, Dan, David, Jerry, Eugene and Jim Lashinski.

Richard Traphagan
Richard A. Traphagan, age 47, a resident of Sheridan, WY, died July 26, 1998, in the Big Horn Mountains as a result of an accident while riding an all-terrain vehicle.

Graveside services were held July 31 at the Sheridan Municipal Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth Doolin officiating.

Richard was the son of Albert and Gladys (Koons) Traphagan. He grew up and graduated from high school in Little Falls, MN, and attended Brainerd College in Brainerd, MN. He served in the U.S. Navy for more than four years. He married Leatha Hoxie on June 2, 1972, in Seattle, WA. After service, he attended Green River College in Green River, WA. He started his own Book World retail business, operating it until 1997 when he sold the business and moved to Sheridan. He raised Arabian horses, loved to fish and enjoyed the mountains. He attended the First Baptist Church of Sheridan.

Survivors include his wife, of Sheridan; three sons, Wade, Grant and Brent Traphagan, all of Sheridan; his mother, Gladys Traphagan of St. Cloud, MN; three brothers, Gary of Eau Claire, WI, and Mark and Michael, both of St. Cloud; five sisters, Frances, Jan and Kari Traphagan, all of Minneapolis, MN, Lori Traphagan of Sauk Rapids, MN, and Brenda Traphagan of Puyallup, WA.

Juel Ann Pitzel
Juel Ann Marlene Pitzel, age 62, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Frazee, MN, died July 31, 1998, near Paris, France.

A memorial Mass was held August 21 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Little Falls. Burial will be held in the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery, Frazee, at a later date.

Juel Ann was born June 23, 1936, the daughter of Carl and Emma (Kratzke) Pitzel in Hobart Township, near Vergas, MN. There she was raised. She attended and graduated from Frazee High School in 1954. Following school, she graduated from Moorhead State University in Moorhead, MN, with a degree in teaching. She then taught school in the Perham, MN, area, and in Roseau, MN, before teaching in Little Falls. She retired in 1997.

Survivors include her mother, Emma Pitzel, of Frazee; two sisters, Janice (Lloyd) Watt of New Hope, MN, and Jane (Orville) Schnabel of Moorhead; two brothers, Monroe (Rose) of Moorhead and Michael (Bette) of Frazee; 12 nephews and nieces and two great-nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father, Carl.

Mary Lou Girtz

Mary Lou (Eisel) Girtz, age 90, died from heart failure in Springfield, OR, on March 1, 1998.

Mary Lou was born August 30, 1907, in Stanton, TX, to Teresa (Cosby) and Cyraus Knowlton. For some time she was a resident of Hillman, MN. She moved from Hillman to Springfield, OR, in 1986.

Survivors include Gene Eisel, Geraldine Eisel, both of Motley, MN, Robert Eisel of Donnelby, MN, John and Donald Eisel of Springfield, OR, Joyce (Eisel) Williams of New Hampshire, Henry Girtz, Jr., of Portland, OR, a brother, Larry Knowlton of Texas; 43 grandchildren; 55 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Ralph Lindborg

Ralph N. Lindborg, age 69, a resident of Brainerd, MN, formerly of the Randall, MN, area, died March 14, 1998, in Maplewood, MN.

Funeral services were held March 20 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, MN, with Rev. Lanning L. Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Culdrum Township Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by Randall VFW Post 9073.

Ralph was born May 10, 1928, in Little Falls, the son of the late Thure and Helen (Sundberg) Lindborg. He grew up in Parker Township, southwest of Randall, and attended country school. He graduated from Little Falls High School in 1946. Ralph entered the U.S. Army in 1946 and served as a military policeman in Japan until his honorable discharge in 1948. He returned to Minnesota and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis for two years. Ralph was united in marriage to Beverly A. Mueller on April 9, 1951, in the Little Brown Church in the Vale in Nashua, IA. The couple returned to Parker Township and farmed for 29 years until relocating in Brainerd in 1980. Ralph was self-employed as a handyman in the Brainerd area. He enjoyed horseshoes, bowling, hunting and fishing. Ralph was a member of Randall VFW Post 9073, served on the Flensburg Creamery Board for many years and served as a state Fire Warden for 40 years.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly of Brainerd; sons, Randy Lindborg and wife Dawn Marie of Garrison, MN, Ron Lindborg and wife Dawn Susan of South St. Paul, MN, and Bill Lindborg and wife Sharon of Maplewood, MN; daughters, Pat Nelson and husband Vern of Alexandria, MN, and Pam Scott and husband Rick of Salem, OR; sister, Norma Miller and husband George of Brainerd; and grandchildren, Makenzie and Michelle Nelson and Shelby and Madison Lindborg.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Becky Sue Lindborg and brother, Willard Lindborg.

Pallbearers were Tom Miller, Bob Mueller, Doug Wiherski, Scott Haus, Larry Falconio, Steve Fregin, Ricky Lundgren and Gerard Zilka.

Jacob Breth

Jacob “Jake” Breth, formerly of Upsala, MN, died March 16, 1998, at the Albany Area Hospital.

Services were held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Jacob was born August 30, 1907, in St. Anthony, MN, to Leopold and Anna (Wogdoll) Breth. He married Marie Harren in September, 1934, in St. Francis, MN. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Upsala. He farmed in the Upsala area, retiring in 1952 and moving to Upsala. He worked at Kraft Food in Melrose from 1952 to 1962.

Survivors include a son, Jerome, of Golden Valley, MN; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Lucy Kremers of Upsala, Michael of Holdingford, MN, Theresia Harlander of Holdingford and Leo of Melrose, MN.

He was preceded in death by his wife, who died December 8, 1962; two sons, Ralph and Richard; one great-grandson; four brothers, Stephen, Lawrence, William and Joseph; and four sisters, Lucille Lange, Suzanne Jarnot, Anna and Marie.
