Lloyd Westman

Lloyd Arneal Westman of Crystal, MN, age 68, died on March 8, 1998, of congestive heart failure.

Lloyd was born to William and Vinie Westman on August 8, 1929, in Newfolden, MN. He attended school in Newfolden and Upsala, MN. Lloyd served in the Air Force, in Margate, England and Citoise, Japan from 1951-1955, receiving an honorable discharge from the Reserves in 1958. Upon his return from the service, he enrolled in North Central Bible College and graduated in 1959. Lloyd was ordained as a minister through the International Min-isterial Fellowship in 1988. He was instrumental in founding the Crystal Assembly Church, and the Compassion Center in Minneapolis. He served on the Board of Directors of the Soul’s Harbor Church where he and his wife Donna attended. He spent countless years caring for the poor and the homeless, the sick and hungry. Lloyd as a business man was a lifelong painter and contractor, both residential and commercial. He was married to Donna Mae Fur-seth of Minneapolis, on November 20, 1954. They shared 41 years of married life together, and raised four children; Steven, Deborah, Gary and Thomas.

Survivors include his wife, Vernette; children, Steven, Deborah Clay and friend Roger Larson, Gary and wife Tama and Thomas; grandchildren, Amber, Ryan, Season, Shana, Devin and Tausha; great-grandchild, Jenni-fer and mother Jackie and two sisters, Bernell Moren and Vivian Esposito, as well as stepmother Beatrice Westman and three stepsisters, Lavonne Stein, Beverly Johnson and Linda Trandem.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his wife, Donna; his mother and father; and sister, Wanda.

Marcel LaFond

Marcel Francis LaFond, age 84, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died May 24, 1998, at his home in Little Falls Township, Morrison County, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 28 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in Little Falls.

Marcel Francis LaFond was born June 29, 1913, in Little Falls, Morrison County, to the late Edward A. and Aurore (Genereaux) LaFond. He grew up in Little Falls and attended Little Falls schools, graduating from the class of 1931. He attended Hibbing Jr. College for two years and Dunwoody Institute for two years in the field of architectural drafting. After his schooling he worked for Al Johnson Construction Company, building an air base in South Hampton Island. In his support to WWII, Marcel later worked on the west coast for the atomic project in Hartford, WA, and various other jobs on the west coast. He later returned to Little Falls and started Marcel LaFond General Construction Company and LaFond Building Supplies. For the next 35 years his company led him to the building of St. Mary’s Church and the first addition to St. Mary’s School in Little Falls, First Lutheran Church and the Zion Lutheran Church education wing both in Little Falls, Perham Hospital in Perham, MN, Crow Wing Chapel at Crow Wing State Park, Lindbergh Interpretive Center in Little Falls, numerous projects at Camp Ripley including the commander’s residence and the Administration Building, St. Francis Chapel renovation at the St. Francis Convent in Little Falls, many projects at the Musser Estate and the Rosenmeier Estate in Little Falls, renovation of the Pine Edge Inn, projects for Minnesota Light and Power Company, homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright as well as facelifts and designs to the many buildings in the downtown area of Little Falls. Marcel was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, Knights of Columbus of which he was a 4th degree Knight, National Home Builders Association, Little Falls Exchange Club, Little Falls Chamber of Commerce, Republican Party where he served as Sixth District Chairperson, former member of the Little Falls Industrial Development Board and was very active as a Boy Scout leader for many years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, friends, traveling, bird watching, gardening and his life-long hobby of reading.

Survivors include his wife, Mryl; son, Thomas M. LaFond and wife Bonnie of Cannon Falls, MN; daughter, Mary LaFond-Swanton of Baudette, MN; brother, Dr. Edward LaFond and wife Laura Jane of St. Joseph, MN; sister, Collete Parker and husband Eldon of Sacramento, CA; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Earl, Lester and Lee LaFond; sister, Sylvia Hann; niece, Arlynn Hann; and son-in-law, Gary Swanton.

Honorary pallbearers were Hub Walthers, Fred Drake, Hub Zyvoloski, Lester Kleinschmidt, Peter J. Kaluza and Joe Griesch.

Casketbearers were Nathan Hofmann, Nicolas Hofmann, Christopher LaFond, Nicholas LaFond, M.D., James Bentler and Gerald Bentler.

Doris M. Hedin

Doris M. Hedin, age 81, a resident of Swanville, MN, died May 21, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Funeral services were held May 26 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville with Rev. John O. Grein officiating. Burial was in the Bearhead Cemetery near Pillsbury, MN.

Doris M. Hedin was born January 18, 1917, in Wimbledon, England, to the late Walter and Charlotte (Daniels) Hoare. She grew up in Wimbledon, England, and attended school. After completing her schooling, she worked as a secretary in London. In 1947, she came to Minnesota and was united in marriage to Harold “Nub” Hedin on June 25, 1947, in Sisseton, S.D. The couple were lifelong residents of Pillsbury where they owned and operated the Pillsbury Pavilion until 1966. Doris then worked as a part-time bartender at the Swanville Municipal Liquor Store, now Shooter’s Pub, until the time of her death. Everyone loved to visit with Doris and hear her charming British accent. She enjoyed bird watching, knitting, crocheting, growing flowers, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren. All of her family enjoyed camping with Doris. She was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville and enjoyed volunteer work there.

Survivors include her son, Howard J. Hedin and wife Cheryl of Pillsbury; daughters, Irene Allord and husband Richard of Coon Rapids, MN, Janet Berge and husband Kenneth of Swanville; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandsons.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold ‘Nub’ Hedin on October 21, 1995; parents; brother, Percy Hoare and a sister, Ethel Knight.

Pallbearers were Bradley and Lance Hedin, Scott Heger, Jeremy Peterson, Robert and Jeffrey Allord.

Gary Lee Christopher, Sr.

Gary Lee Christopher, Sr., age 51, a resident of rural Long Prairie, formerly of Madison, MN, died May 23, 1998, in Madison.

Funeral services were held May 27 at Zion Lutheran Church in Browerville, MN, with Rev. John Dalen officiating. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery in Browerville.

Gary Lee Christopher was born March 21, 1947, in Madison to Arthur and Victoria (Schuver) Christopher. Gary was raised in Bellingham, MN. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Bellingham. He graduated from Bellingham High School and attended Alexandria Vocational School. He married Verna Miller on July 27, 1966, in Bessemer, MI. He served in the Marine Corp and the Marine Corps Reserve from 1966 - 1985, and was stationed in California, North Carolina and Cuba. He was a boilermaker for many years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, softball, woodworking, collecting baseball cards, antiques, Beanie Babies and Hotwheels.

Survivors include his wife, Verna of Long Prairie; children, Kelly (Paul) Johnson of Browerville, Gary, Jr. (Shannon) of Svea, MN, Kimberly (Mike) Line of Browerville and Greg of Long Prairie; grandchildren, Kenley and Benton Johnson, Carter and Cole Christopher, Danielle, Torrey, Tanner and Teal Line and Taylor Christopher; many nieces and nephews; three brothers, Arthur of Los Angeles, CA, Thomas of South Dakota, and David of Alexandria, MN; three sisters, Darlene Nelson of Columbia Heights, MN, Sharon Baker of Honolulu, HI, and Debra Ambuehl of Olympia, WA.

He was preceded in death by his parents Arthur and Victoria, Clarence Nelson, his step-father, and brother, Roger Christopher.

Casketbearers were Mark Nelson, Dean Dreher, Carl Brehmer, Dustin Larson, Larry Carll, Mike Golombiecki, Terry Host and Tommy Minor

Hazel M. Pierce

Hazel M. Pierce, age 83, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of the Randall, MN, area, died May 21, 1998, at her home.

Funeral services were held May 24 at Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls with Rev. Martin Langemo officiating. Burial was in the Oakland Cemetery.

Hazel M. Pierce was born December 28, 1914, in Ivanhoe, MN, the daughter of the late Hans & Emma (Arp) Klinker. She grew up in Ivanhoe, Verdi and Sleepy Eye, MN, where she attended school. After completing her schooling, she worked in Sleepy Eye until coming to the Randall area with her parents in 1934. Hazel was united in marriage to Harry Pierce on October 27, 1934, at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Randall. The couple farmed SW of Randall, in Parker Township, for 35 years until retiring in 1969 to Little Falls. Hazel worked in Little Falls at Munsingwear for six years. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, embroidery and cross stitch and cooking. She lovingly made quilts for every member of her family. Hazel was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, the Zion Quilting Club, Zion Mission Circle and the Parker Town Birthday Club.

Survivors include her husband, Harry Pierce; sons, William Pierce and wife Karen of Moline, IL, Richard ‘Dick’ Pierce and wife Bitsy of Motley, MN, and Robert ‘Bob’ Pierce and wife Sandy of Stillwater, MN; daughters, Colleen Duncan of Cushing, MN, and Marilyn Smith of Little Falls; brother, Fred Klinker of Silver Bay, MN; sisters, Hilda Wendland of Randall, Minnie Riebel of Sleepy Eye and Esther Ogden of St. Paul, MN; 14 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son, James Pierce; five brothers; and two grandchildren, Kristy and Susan Winskowski.

Pallbearers were grandsons, Ross, Ryan and Billy Pierce, Karl Smith, Todd and Michael Winskowski.

Inez Kraft
Inez O. Kraft, age 84, a former resident of Cambridge, MN, died January 20, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held January 24 at Cambridge Lutheran Church with Pastor Erling Tungseth officiating.

Inez was born December 5, 1913, in Pine County, MN, to Charles and Maggie (Wigg) Johnson. She was united in marriage to Ben H. Kraft in August of 1931. Inez enjoyed bowling and reading. She was a member of Cambridge Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Lois Peterson and husband James V. of Little Falls; grandchildren, Robin M. Richardson and husband Richard of Little Falls, Tracy M. Peterson of Fargo, ND, and Beth J. Peterson of Pierz, MN; sister, Doris Gladhill of Minneapolis and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ben in 1950; and infant son; two brothers and seven sisters.

Daniel Stevens
Daniel Stevens, age 81, a resident of Browerville, MN, died January 19, 1998, at the St. Cloud VA Medical Center.

Funeral services were held January 22 at the Iten Funeral Home in Browerville with the Rev. John Dalen officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Browerville.

Daniel was born July 9, 1916, in Slate Hill, NY, to Harry and Ada (Hayes) Stevens. He married Clarene Nystrom on March 30, 1944, in Worthington, MN. During his early years he served in the United States Army. Daniel and Clarene lived in Worthington until moving to Browerville in 1970. He owned and operated Stevens Tree Service until 1975 when he retired to do the things he most enjoyed: gardening, fishing and cribbage games.

Survivors include children, Daniel Stevens and wife Judi of Upsala, MN, Vicki Heid and husband Bob of Browerville and Mike Stevens and wife Cindy of Browerville; sister, Bea Karsten of Montgomery NY; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Clarene on October 2, 1996, and brother, Roy Stevens.

Casketbearers were Nick Christensen, Chet Christensen, Adam Stevens, Andy Stevens, Carey Lamont and Kristin Coqyet.
