Donna Hayes
Donna Marie Hayes, age 55, a resident of Brainerd, MN, died January 20, 1998, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd.

Funeral services were held January 23 at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd with Pastor Harvey Peterson officiating. Burial was at Riverside Cemetery in St. Mathias Township.

Donna was born in Brainerd on July 15, 1942, to Walter and Leona (Tomberlin) Dircks.

Survivors include her husband, Gene Hayes; three sons, Kevin, Gary and Brent Hayes, all of Brainerd; five grandchildren; father, Walter Dircks of Brainerd; brother, Edward “Butch” Dircks of Buckman, MN, and sister, Rita Rasinski of Brainerd.

She was preceded in death by her mother and grandparents.

William Cameron
William Cameron, age 63, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died January 18, 1998, at the Veterans Hospital in St. Cloud, MN.

Funeral services were held January 21 at the Brenny-Simonet Funeral Home in Little Falls with Father Al Stangl officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley.

William was born October 1, 1934, in Salem, SD, to Pratt and Lelia (Stewart) Cameron. During his lifetime, he worked as a mechanic in Rockford, MN, farmed in the Cushing and Little Falls area and served in the U.S. Marines during the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include his son, Joel of Howard Lake, MN; daughter, Amber Stinson of Minot, ND; brothers, Larry of Spring Lake Park, MN, and Clark of St. Paul, MN, and sisters, Gladys Spiess of Randall, MN, and Alice Immel of Woodbury, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Russell Chisholm
Russell E. Chisholm, age 53, died January 19, 1998, at the V.A. Hospital in Topeka, KS.

A funeral service was held January 24 at the Danner Funeral Home in Abilene, KS, with Fr. Louis Mattas officiating. Interment was in the Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery.

Russell was born February 3, 1944, in Brainerd, MN, the son of Fred and Betty Torgerson Chisholm, growing to manhood in the area. He was a veteran of the Army, serving in Germany. Most of his life was spent in Galveston, TX, doing ranch work and carpet laying. In 1992 he rode a horse over the Chisholm Trail to Abilene, KS. He had been a resident of Abilene since that time. On October 5, 1997, he married Ronda Riddel.

Survivors include wife, Ronda; two sons, Cody of Texas, Russel Jr. of Staten Island, NY, one daughter, Anita Chisholm of Royalton, MN, father Fred of Downey, CA, mother Betty Karnowski of Brownsville, TX, two brothers, Leslie Chisholm, of Lacey, WA, Brian Karnowski of Little Falls, MN, one sister, Ruth Karnowski of Little Falls and one grandson.

Mary Asselin
Mary K. Asselin, age 50, died from cancer, January 19, 1998 at her home in St. Cloud, MN.

Services were held January 22 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church with the Rev. Virgil Helmin officiating. Burial was in the Assump-tion Cemetery in St. Cloud.

Mary was born November 10, 1947 in Little Falls, MN to Richard and Rose (Wielinski) Schreiber. She graduated from the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph in 1969, receiving a BA in Home Economics. She married Donald J. Asselin on July 31, 1971 in Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN. She taught Home Economics in Foley from 1970-75. She moved to St. Cloud in 1976 where she was self-employed as a day care provider. She was a member of Holy Spirit parish where she was a member and past president of the Christian Women. She was also a past member of the African Violet Club.

Survivors include her husband; parents, Richard and Rose (Wielinski) Schreiber of Little Falls; children: Terrence of Minneapolis, MN; Jason of St. Cloud, Jeanette of St. Paul, MN; Nicole and Naomi, both at home; brothers and sisters: Ken of St. Joseph, MN, Dennis of Rochester, MN, Julie Czech of Little Falls, Margaret Kalis of Buffalo, MN and Patty May of Waconia, MN.

Ernestine Meyer
Ernestine Cecelia “Toots” Meyer, age 85, a resident of Pierz, MN, died January 23, 1998, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 26 in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with the Rev. Kenneth Brenny officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Ernestine was born December 16, 1912, in Pierz to the late Michael and Helena (Block) Nagel. She grew up in Pierz and attended country school. After her schooling she worked as a housekeeper. She was united in marriage on May 14, 1935, to Michael P. Meyer in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. Together they made their home in Pierz where they owned and operated a blacksmith shop in which Toots also worked, helping her husband during the war years. She worked at Munsingwear in Little Falls, MN, and later at Hartmann’s Store in Pierz, retiring in 1974. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. She enjoyed bowling, crafts, sewing and hard work.

Survivors include daughter, Erna Mae Wetzel and husband George of Little Falls; sons, Allen Meyer and wife Cindy of St. Cloud, MN, and Dennis Meyer and wife Charlene and James Meyer and wife Pat, all of Pierz; brothers, William Nagel and wife Florence of Little Falls and Richard Nagel and wife Janet of Staples, MN; sisters, Helen LeBlanc-Hamrick of Little Falls and Bernice Phillips of Kansas City, KS; 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael on July 27, 1979; parents; brothers, Ben, Walter, Raymond and Michael Nagel and a sister, Loretta Gross.

Casketbearers were Todd, Pete, Joe and Ben Meyer, George Wetzel, Jr., and Troy Block.

Sarah Batcheler
Sarah A. Batcheler, age 85, a resident of Sauk Rapids, MN, died January 22, 1998, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Sauk Rapids.

Funeral services were January 26 at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home Chapel with Rev. Darryl Anderson officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Maple Hill Cemetery in Eagle Bend, MN.

Sarah was born in Sharlow Township, ND, on October 17, 1912, to Harry and Alma (Potter) Wheaton. She married Kenneth Lee Murray in 1935. He died on September 7, 1946. She then married Melvin Clair Batcheler on July 3, 1948, in Clarissa, MN. He died on December 1, 1994. She had been a resident of Sauk Rapids since 1959. She was a cook at various restaurants in the Sauk Rapids area. She was a former member of the Christian & Missionary Alliance Church in Sauk Rapids before moving to Good Shepherd Lutheran Home. She was the founder of the St. Cloud Multiple Sclerosis Society where she was very active for many years and spoke at SCSU. She sewed puppets for RSVP and Sauk Rapids elementary schools.

She is mother and mother-in-law to, Patricia Majeski of Sauk Rapids; Beatrice and Harold Schmidt of Randall, MN, and Lenore Murray of St. Cloud, MN. She is also survived by a foster daughter and husband, Mary and Harvey Koening of Dayton; brothers, Guy Wheaton of Portland, OR, and Russell Wheaton of El Cajon, CA; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Kenneth Murray; second husband, Melvin Batcheler and sisters and brother, Ruth McLean, Warren Wheaton and Myrtle Leeper.

Shirley Perry
Shirley Ann Perry, age 58, a resident of Staples, MN, died January 22, 1998, at her home.

A memorial service was held January 31 at the Lincoln Evangelical Free Church with the Reverends Brian Burton and Terry Stumbo officiating. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples. The family prefers memorials to the American Diabetes Association, the Arthritic Foundation or the Lincoln Evangelical Free Church’s Women's Ministries.

Shirley was born July 4, 1939, in Moran Township, MN, to Elmer and Pearl (Motel) Judd. She grew up in the Staples area and graduated from Staples High School in 1957. She received a Bachelor’s Degree in physical education and English from St. Cloud State Teachers College in 1962. She married Edwin Perry at the United Methodist Church in Staples on August 11, 1962. She taught school in Bertha for two years and then began to raise her family. She continued to substitute teach as well as help her husband with their family business, the Ben Franklin Store in Staples. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Staples for a number of years, participating in Circles, and as a youth group leader and a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. For the past 10 years she was an active member of the Lincoln Evangelical Free Church where she participated in Women’s Ministries, the music and worship committee and “The Gospel According to Scrooge” production. She was an accomplished seamstress and cook. She enjoyed reading and spending time at their lake cabin on Fish Trap Lake in Lincoln. Her positive, cheerful spirit, courage and faith were an encouragement and blessing to all who knew her.

Survivors include her husband, Ed; her daughter, Diana Perry-Albers and husband Ray of Stevens Point, WI; her son, Paul Perry and wife Pamela of Wadena, MN; her mother, Pearl Sellnow and husband Robert of the Greater Staples Care Center; two sisters, Angeline Hill of Elk River, MN, and Carol Cameron of Staples; three brothers, Raymond Judd and wife Delores of North Branch, MN, Gerald Judd and wife Darlene of Coon Rapids, MN, and Arnold Judd and wife Diane of Tacoma, WA, and five grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Elmer Judd.

Herbert Bencker
Herbert W. Bencker, age 70, a resident of Scandia Valley, MN, died January 23, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were held January 28 in the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Randall, MN, with Rev. Tim Berdahl officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley. Military honors were provided by Randall VFW Post 9073.

Herbert was born February 25, 1927, in Minneapolis, MN, son of the late Earl and Ruth (Giesa) Bencker. He grew up and attended school in Robbinsdale, MN. Herbert served in the United States Navy from March 1944 until December 1947. During that time he served aboard the USS LCI-1096, the USS Collett and the USS Piedmont. Herbert was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy, he returned to Robbinsdale. He was united in marriage to Sonja Stubstad on December 17, 1949, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Pelican Rapids, MN. Following their marriage they lived in Minneapolis, then Maple Grove, MN, moving to their current residence in Cushing, MN, in 1990.

Survivors include his wife, Sonja; a son, Allen Bencker and wife Kathy of Robbinsdale; two daughters, Diane Hogle and husband Daniel of Maple Grove and Laurie Bencker of Staples, MN; five grandchildren and a sister, Beryl Barnes of Red Wing, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.

Casketbearers were Ron Williams, Shane Strack, Dave Sherer, Larry Sorenson, Dick Rowe and Doug Kirks. Honorary casketbearer was Dan Keniston.
