Helen Sims

Helen I. Sims, age 79, a resident of rural Hillman, MN, died November 13, 1997, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz, MN.

Funeral services were November 17 at the Shelley-Virnig Funeral Chapel in Pierz with the Rev. Dave Gouldin officiating. Interment was in Lakeview Cemetery north of Hillman.

Helen was born September 17, 1918, in St. Cloud, MN, to the late John and Mabel (Dile) Lease. As a young child, Helen’s family moved to a farm in Richardson Township near Hillman where she grew up. Helen was united in marriage to Richard F. Sims on May 1, 1940, in Whitefish, MT. Following their marriage, they lived in Montana for six years before returning to farm in Richardson Township near Hillman. During their time on the farm, Helen worked as a housewife and also operated a sewing machine at Cohn and Feldman garment factory. Following Richard’s death on June 6, 1996, Helen remained on the farm until entering St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz in September of 1997 where she resided until her death.

Survivors include her son, Allen Sims of St. Cloud; daughter, Luella Pella of Brainerd, MN; brothers, Elmer Lease of Hillman, Henry Lease of Onamia, MN, and Paul Lease of Montana; nine grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; daughter, Laverne Schmaltz; parents; four brothers, two sisters and an infant grandson, Michael Pella.

Honorary pallbearers were Jeremy Pogorelce, Ricky Zebroski, Tate Tetrick, Glen Hantsley and Duane Bachman. Active casketbearers were Daniel Pella, Victor Lease, David Lease, Matt Zebroski, Rusty Schmaltz and Marvin Sims.

Raymond Dombovy

Raymond C. Dombovy, age 72, a resident of Bowlus, MN, died November 17, 1997, at his home. Funeral services were held November 20 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Catholic Church in Opole, MN, with the Rev. Gerald Mischke officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Raymond was born July 25, 1925, in Brockway Township, Stearns County, MN, to Anton and Anna (Wentland) Dombovy. He married Delphine Pollock September 6, 1949, in Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Opole. He was a member of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church and he worked for American Hoist and Derrick in St. Paul, MN, for 32 years, retiring in 1988.

Survivors include his wife of Bowlus; son and daughter, Gretchen M. Bachand of Newington, CT, and Paul J. Dombovy of Little Falls, MN; seven grandchildren and one brother, Vince Dombovy of Hackensack, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, James and two brothers, Bernard and Ambrose.

Edward O’Hotto
Edward J. “Butch” O’Hotto, age 87, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died August 2, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held August 6 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with Rev. Nicholas Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Edward was born October 13, 1910, in Swan River Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late Lawrence and Elizabeth (Schichta) O’Hotto. He grew up in Swan River Township and attended country school. He was united in marriage to Helen Kulig on August 27, 1937, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton, MN. After their marriage, the couple farmed near Elmdale, MN, until July 1955. In 1955, they moved into Little Falls and Ed worked for Crestliner Boats for several years. Ed then started his custom backhoe business which he operated until retiring in 1973. He enjoyed fishing. Edward was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Little Falls Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Helen O’Hotto; daughters, Joyce Johnson and Janice O’Hotto, both of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughters, June Torkelson and Carol O’Hotto; brothers, Peter, Julius and Henry O’Hotto and sisters, Julie Thines and Emily Plotnik.

Irma LaFond
Irma L. LaFond, age 71, a resident of Cushing, MN, died July 26, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital, Little Falls, MN.
Funeral services were held August 2 at Zion Lutheran Church, Little Falls, with the Rev. Martin Langemo officiating.

Irma was born March 19, 1927, in Fort Ripley, MN, the daughter of the late Gustav and Esther (Bublitz) Holz. She lived most of her life in New Brighton, MN, where she worked for the Fairlanes Corporation for over 30 years. Her final years were spent at a home that she and her husband built at Fishtrap Lake. She was always a devoted and active Christian and in her latter years, a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Little Falls.

Survivors include her husband, LeRoy Louis LaFond, whom she married June 25, 1948; one son, the Rev. Larry LaFond of Columbia, SC; five sisters, Frieda Rebischke of St. Cloud, MN, Millie Rebischke of Little Falls, Adeline Kazeck of Sauk Rapids, MN, Bernice Waldvogel of Little Falls and Marie Holz of Little Falls; five brothers, Robert Holz of Little Falls, Donald Holz of St. Cloud, Gustav Holz of Blaine, MN, Edwin Holz of Beaverton, OR, and LeRoy Holz of Little Falls; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Eleanor Holz.

Lawrence Diamond
Lawrence Diamond, age 76, a resident of Anchorage, AK, formerly of Randall, MN, died July 31, 1998, in Anchorage.
Funeral services were held August 5 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Randall. Burial followed at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Ft. Ripley, MN.

Terrence O’Donnell
Terrence “Teddy” J. O’Donnell, age 91, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died July 31, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held August 4 at St. Otto’s Care Center Chapel in Little Falls, with Father Anthony Kroll officiating. Interment was in the Motley Public Cemetery in Motley, MN.

Teddy was born February 2, 1907, in Faribault, MN, to the late Michael and Mary (Schrader) O’Donnell. He is remembered by his family as being a first-class, master carpenter. He was a charter member of the Carpenters & Joiners Local #851 Union in Anoka, MN. He became a resident of St. Otto’s Care Center in 1992 where he resided until his death.

Survivors include his brother, Patrick O’Donnell of Dayton, MN; sisters, Helen Rigg of Minneapolis, MN, and Valerie Kolbe of Longmont, CO and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Myrtle O’Donnell; four brothers and four sisters.

Pallbearers were Jim Sorman, Kevin Leiner and Michael Abrams.

Michael and Angelo Kapsner
Michael and Angelo Kapsner, twin sons of Brad and Becky Kapsner of St. Cloud, MN, were born and died July 28, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services were held Saturday, August 1, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Parish Cemetery in Sauk Rapids, MN.

Survivors include parents of St. Cloud; grandparents, Gerald and Marilyn Kapsner of Little Falls, MN, Kay Welters of Sauk Rapids and Ed and Rebecca Schmidt of Raleigh, NC; and great-grandparents, Rose Miller of Little Falls, Al and Gertrude Kapsner of Pierz, MN, and Albert and Bernadette Welters of Melrose, MN.

Lucille Miller
Lucille Rosalie Miller, age 72, a resident of rural Motley, MN, died July 29, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held August 1 at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Motley with Fr. Robert Landsberger officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Hill Cemetery in Staples, MN.

Lucille was born October 8, 1925, in Staples, MN, to Robert and Julia (Rauer) Weishalla. She grew up and attended school in Staples. On May 11, 1952, she married Clarence Miller in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples. Together they lived and worked in Alaska and Duluth before returning to the family farm in 1961. Lucille spent much time and effort in her gardening, baking, canning and especially enjoyed picking blueberries. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Motley.

Survivors include her husband, Clarence; a son, Robert Miller of Mt. Shasta, CA; three daughters, Julie Nagel of Willmar, MN, Linda Miller-Russo of Cottage Grove, MN, and Lori Miller of Leader, MN; three sisters, Gertrude Ziegler of Philbrook, MN, Leona Brabec of Browerville, MN, and Pauline Page of Staples; a brother, John Weishalla of Staples; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters and two brothers.

Melvin Tedford
Melvin C. Tedford, age 49, a resident of Fallon, NV, died July 9, 1998, at Fallon.
A funeral service will be held at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery chapel (near Camp Ripley) on August 14 at 2 p.m., with burial there also.

Melvin was born July 28, 1948, in Little Falls, MN, the son of Cleneth and Mary Tedford. Melvin graduated from the Little Falls High School in 1967. He joined the U.S. Army and served in Vietnam. He has been a resident of Fallon, NV, for years.

Survivors include his mother, Mary of Little Falls; brothers, Robert (Sharleen) of Little Falls, Richard (Patty) of Fargo, ND, and Clinton (Judy) of Appleton, WI, and a sister, Eileen (Richard) Davis of Del Rio, TX.

He was preceded in death by his father, Cleneth and his brother, John.
