Beverly Mary Louise Nelson
Beverly Mary Louise Nelson, of Duluth, who graduated from Proctor High School, died Thurs., Oct. 9, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. She was 68.

Beverly was born in Midway Township on May 13, 1935, to Carl Edwin and Edith Anna Alvina (Lorenz) Carlson. She worked at the Duluth News Tribune as a copy person.

Beverly is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leonard, and two brothers.

Surviving are a brother, Marlyn (Goldie) Carlson of Sacramento, Calif.; a sister, Lois Carlson of Proctor; aunts, Lilly Olson and Dorothy Carlson of Cloquet; a sister in law, Ruth Carlson of Webster, Tex.; a niece, Dianne Carlson of Webster, Tex. and nephews, Duane (Virginia) Carlson of Fla. and Robert Carlson of Webster, Tex.

Burial will be in Polish Catholic Cemetery.

Frances E. Paap
Frances E. Paap, who grew up in Twig and graduated from Proctor High School, died Fri., Oct. 3, in a Duluth hospital. She was 90.

She was born in Duluth to Albert and Anna (Gustafson) Mehling. She married Henry W. Paap in Duluth in 1937. She was a homemaker, and was an active member of Lutheran Church of Christ the King.

Survivors include her daughter Carol (David) Schreck of Duluth, grandsons Darin (Denise) Agenter and Brandon Agenter, both of Duluth, great-grandsons Nicholas and Nathan, many nieces and nephews, and special friend Don Patterson of Duluth.

Inurnment was in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Albert W. Lipinski
Rudy Lipinski of Proctor is saddened by the death of his brother Albert W. Lipinski. He died Mon., Oct. 6, 2003, in Duluth at the age of 87.

Al was born in Duluth and had been a lifelong resident. He attended Denfeld High School and then served in the Civilian Conservation Corps. Al joined the Army National Guard in 1937 serving with the 125th Field Artillery called to active duty during WW II. He served with the Army National Guard as chief warrant officer, retiring in 1976. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church. Al was a member of the VFW, American Legion and Italian American Club.

Al is also survived by his wife Rose, a son, two daughters, a sister, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Melvyn Suksi
Melvin Phillips of Proctor and Russell Suksi of Saginaw are mourning the death of their father, Melvyn Suksi. He died Sun., Sept. 28, in a Duluth hospice. He was 61.

He was a mechanic and carried that trade through life.

He is also survived by his partner Peg Smull, two other sons, four daughters, two brothers, a sister, and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Richard Oscar Maki
Services were held for Richard Oscar Maki of Bayview. The Vinland Street resident died Mon., Sept. 29, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. He was 67.

A lifelong area resident, he married Dorothy Alice Wiita on Nov. 19, 1955 in Duluth. He had worked for U.S. Steel, and later as a dispatcher for Anderson Trucking Service for ten years. He was a member of the Finnish American Historical Society, Lakehead Chapter, where he served as treasurer, and the Proctor Moose. In the past, Richard had been active with scouting. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his cabin on Fish Lake.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy, sons Keith, Kenneth (Belinda) and Kelvin (Virginia), daughter Kathryn Maki, six grandchildren, and cousins in Finland.

Janet L. Graber
Janet Graber, who along with her husband Giles were the owners of the "Graber's Cafe" in Proctor, died Wed., Oct. 15, 2003, in St. Mary's Medical Center, surrounded by her family. She was a former resident of Midway Ave. and of 419 Seventh St., Proctor. She was 63.

Jan was born in Duluth on July 25, 1940 to George and Heila (Maki) Clark. She was a long time resident of Brookston and Proctor. Jan graduated from Brookston High School. She loved flowers and cooking. Jan also worked for Jeno's for many years.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Giles R. Sr. in 1999, and her first husband Edward Blais in 1990, and brother Ray Clark.

Survivors include her sons Brian (Judy) Blais and Bradley Blais, both of Brookston, stepsons Daniel H. (Roxanne) Graber of Proctor, Paul E. (Sue), and Giles R. Jr. 'Guy' (Nancy Brown), both of Duluth, stepdaughters Robin (Jerry) Schultz of Ariz., Dawn (Bob) Flanagan of Colo., and Julie (Kenneth) Stroik of Duluth, brothers George (Thyra) Clark of Proctor, Marvin, and Robert 'Bob' (Nancy) Clark, both of Brookston, sister-in-law Marian Clark of Saginaw; 33 grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren.

Entombment was in Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown.

Joanne Mathilda Running
Services were held yesterday for Joanne Mathilda Running. The former Proctor resident died Sat., Oct. 18, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. She was 65.

Joanne was born in Maple, Wis. She grew up in Duluth and Superior and graduated from Superior Central High School in 1956. On July 4, 1956, Joanne married Ron Running in Superior and they made their home in Duluth. In 1977, they moved to Comstock Lake near Cotton where together they ran Running's Retreat. She was a member of Minn. Concerned Citizens for Life, and a mentor at Northwoods Children's Home in Duluth. She was a member of First Love Church in West Duluth.

Joanne is survived by her husband Ron of Esko, daughters Rhonda (Mark) Gazelka of Bemidji, Joanna (Jeff) Shady of Esko, sons Ronald Skip (Rose) Jr. of Wash., Donald (Elizabeth) of Ind., foster children Loretta (Mark) Bickford of Kelsey, Samantha Skerbitz of Chisholm, Sharon (Kris) Whelan of Duluth, Richard (Michelle) Skerbitz of Chisholm, William (Carol) Skerbitz of St. Paul and Dale (Christine) Heuer of Ramsey, sisters Jean (Les) Buchanan of South Range, Wis., Jessie (Russell) Running of Neb., Joyce (Kenny) Fawcett of Las Vegas, 32 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Doris E. Herron
Doris E. Herron of Princeton, the last Gorham, died Sun., Oct. 12, 2003, in Northridge Care Center and North Hospice in New Hope, Minn.

She was born Nov. 5, 1923 to John and Louise Gorham of Proctor. She was a Proctor High School graduate. She worked for the DM&IR and at Nopeming.

She moved to the Cities in her early 20's. Her husband was a POW in WW II taken prisoner on Wake Island. They were both Involved in POW activities. Doris was a life member of Charles Knaeble VFW Auxiliary. When they retired, they lived for a time in Grand Rapids.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years Merle, brothers Elmer, Francis, and Maurice, and a sister, Lucille Kreuser.

Survivors include sons Michael, James (Chris) and Jeffrey; and grandchildren, Bryan, Jennifer, Jacob, Willie and Melissa.

Interment was at Fort Snelling.

George Albert Elde
George Albert Elde, who grew up at Elde's Corner in Midway Township died Sat., Oct. 11, 2003 in his Pipe Creek, Texas home. He was 90.

He was born in Embarrass to Andrew and Amanda Elde.

He was preceded in death by his parents, nine brothers and sisters, two wives Mabel-Hill-Elde and Bessie Elde, and a daughter Jean Marie LaGoe.

Survivors include daughters Betty (Fred) Nylander of Proctor and JoAnne Lagedrost of Texas, son George (June) Elde Jr. of Calif., nine grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held in Pipe Creek, Texas. Burial was in California.

Alice Jeanne (Hakes) Lundgren
A memorial service will be held Sat., Nov. 1 at 11 a.m. for Alice Jeanne (Hakes) Lundgren of East Locust St. She died Tues., Oct. 28, 2003 in her home at the age of 76.

She was born in Duluth. She attended Lowell Elementary and Proctor High School. She married Robert Lundgren in 1943 in Cloquet. Alice worked at the Cook Home Laundry, Proctor Jr. and Sr. High Schools, and retired from Lake Haven Manor in 1989. She and her husband also owned and operated the Lake Breeze Motel and the Norton Park Motel for several years. Alice was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Hermantown, formerly Christ Church of Proctor.

She was preceded in death by her parents, twin brothers Joseph in 1932 and Gerald in 1993, and a grandson David Lundgren in 1983.

She is survived by her husband Robert, sons David of Sydney, Australia, Robert J. (Linda) of Proctor, and Terry L. (Shandeen) of Munger, six grandchildren, four great-grandsons, three nieces, one nephew, and many friends.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service in Trinity Episcopal Church, 4903 Maple Grove Road. Memorials to Trinity Episcopal Church would be appreciated.

Dave L. Willeck
Services were held last week for former Saginaw resident Dave L. Willeck. He died Oct. 22, 2003, in Duluth after a brief illness. He was 80.

The Cloquet resident was born in Brevator Township. Dave owned and operated a mink ranch from the 1940's until 1962. He then was employed by St. Louis County ISD #710, first as a bus driver for 25 years, then as a custodian until he retired.

Dave is survived by his wife of 60 years Ann, children Richard (Lella) of Duluth, Dennis (Linda) of Alaska, Bruce (Kathy) of Cloquet and Drinda (Leroy) Warner of Saginaw, ten grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren, sisters June (Tom) Filmore and May Hollinger, both of Oregon and Esther (Vern) Fiedler of Rice, Minn., brothers George Willeck of Montana and Bob Willeck of Saginaw, and many nieces, nephews and friends.

Interment was in Sunrise Memorial Park, Duluth.
