Guy M. Kardell
Guy M. (Butch) Kardell, age 51, of Cushing, MN, formerly of Sauk Rapids, MN, died at his home on December 1, 1997.
Funeral services were held December 6, at the Brenny Randall Funeral Chapel.

Guy was born April 19, 1946, in Sauk Rapids, son of Axel and Marjorie (Kay) Kardell. On August 22, 1970, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth (Betsy) Alvord in Sauk Rapids. Guy was a man of many talents. He had a love for music and enjoyed playing the guitar, harmonica and singing. He brought joy, laughter and fun to many people over the years by entertaining them. Guy was a true artist, having done thousands of paints. His ability to make furniture and things out of wood was truly a gift. He loved fishing and showed many people where to catch the fish. Guy will be forever remembered and loved; he had many friends. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife, Betsy; son, Erik Kardell of Cushing; two daughters Angela Kardell of Staples, MN, Melanie Vosen of Little Falls, MN; four brothers, John Kardell of Sauk Centre, MN; Lynn Kardell of Foley, MN; Chuck Kardell and Gary Kardell of Minneapolis; two sisters, Gail East of Park Rapids, MN, Carol Wright of Minneapolis; and one granddaughter Briana Marie Vosen.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Florence H. Werkman
Florence H. Werkman, age 88, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died November 28, 1997, at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls.
Funeral services were held December 1 at First United Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Miles Alexander officiating. Interment was in the Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.

Florence H. Werkman was born on July 9, 1909, in Simonwalde, Germany to the late Tole and Ann (Frerichs) Reiter. At the age of two she moved with her family to the United States and settled in George, IA where she grew up. She was united in marriage to Venno Werkman on October 28, 1928, in Sioux Falls, SD. The couple farmed in southwestern Minnesota before moving to Ripley Township in Morrison County where they farmed. In 1971 the couple built a new home on the Mississippi River in Ripley Township. Venno died on June 18, 1983, and Florence continued living in their river home. In 1984 Florence moved to the Willow Apartments in Little Falls where she resided until 1994 at which time she entered the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls. She lived at the Lutheran Care Center up to the time of her death. Florence was a member of First United Church in Little Falls, was current president of the Resident Council at the Lutheran Care Center, loved reading and socializing over tea time with her many friends and was always involved with her children in 4-H as they were growing up.

Survivors include sons, Eldon Werkman and wife Phyllis of Tucson, AZ, Donald Werkman and wife Carol of Little Falls, Herman Werkman and wife Lois of Pryor, OK, Larry Werkman and wife Shirley of Audubon, MN and Floyd Werkman of Royalton, MN; daughters, Anne Hallberg of Little Falls, Darlene Okroi and husband Joseph of Little Falls, Verna Reck and husband Ed of Sibley, IA; and LaVonne Adams and husband Don of Fort Ripley, MN; brother, Evert VanWesten of George, IA; 36 grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by husband, Venno Werkman; son, Frank Werkman; daughter, Georgia Lange and brothers, John, Peter, Harm, Thole and Ed Reiter.

Pallbearers were Floyd, Larry and Herman Werkman, Joe Okroi, Jr., John Hallberg and Edward V. Reck.

Ronald Miller
Ronald James Miller, age 48, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died November 29, 1997, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery north of Little Falls.

Ronald J. Miller was born July 11, 1949, in Little Falls to Zeta M. (Hansmann) Miller and the late Raymond G. Miller. He grew up in Little Falls, attended Little Falls High School and graduated from the class of 1967. He worked at the National Food Store in Little Falls and in April of 1969, entered the United States Army. He received an honorable discharge on April of 1971. He returned to Little Falls and worked at the National Food Store until 1977, when he went to work at Hennepin Paper Company in Little Falls. He was still presently employed there. He was united in marriage to Barbara Ann Hanneman on June 12, 1971, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls. Ronald was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls. He enjoyed restoring old cars, birds, was a great handyman, father, husband and grandfather.

Survivors include his wife Barb; mother, Zeta Miller of Little Falls, daughters; Carrie Ann Lalum and husband Nate of Little Falls, Julie Marie Miller of St. Cloud, Heidi and Cassie Miller both at home; sisters, Sharon Mrozik and husband Gene of Little Falls, JoAnn Miller of Rice, MN and two grandchildren, Samantha Ann Lalum and Zachary David “Butch” Lalum. He was preceded in death by his father.

Casketbearers were Larry Hartwig, Steve Pederson, Herman Johannes, Dennis Gwost, Joe Kobliska, Donnie Sherwood and Martin Wagner.

Thomas Bieniek
Thomas Bieniek, age 81, a resident of Bowlus, MN, died September 27, 1998, at his home in Bowlus.
Mass of Christian Burial was held September 30 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus with Father Silverius Schmitt officiating and Deacon Jerome Roth con-celebrating. Burial was at St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery.

Thomas was born May 13, 1917, to Matthew and Victoria (Zapzalka) Bieniek in Bowlus. He was raised in Bowlus. Thomas was united in marriage to Sophia Kromarek on October 30, 1948, in Scranton, ND. In 1951, they moved to Bowlus where he farmed and was janitor at the Upsala High School. He also worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and did carpentry. Thomas enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Sophia Bieniek of Bowlus; sons, Conrad Bieniek and wife Evelyn of Bowlus, Pat Bieniek and wife Rita of Bowlus and Tim Bieniek of Bowlus; daughters, Marene Peterson and husband Ray of St. Joseph, MN, Louella Eichers and husband Mark of St. Joseph, Linda Pick and husband Joseph of Rice, MN, and Joy Bieniek and special friend Rick of St. Cloud, MN, and 10 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Casketbearers were Christina Pick, Jeremy Pick, Jason Pick, Heather Bieniek, Ryan Bieniek and Tracy Bieniek.

Leo Casey
Leo Francis Casey, age 68, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died September 28, 1998, at the Ambassador Good Samaritan Center in New Hope, Hennepin County, MN.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held October 1 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with Rev. Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Leo was born September 23, 1930, in Upsala, Morrison County, MN, to the late Patrick and Mary (Durkin) Casey. He grew up in Upsala where he attended and graduated from Upsala High School with the Class of 1952. He entered the United States Army. Leo was united in marriage to JoAnne M. Schreiber on January 8, 1957, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls and, following their marriage, they made their home in Little Falls. He worked as a wheelman on the ore boats in the Great Lakes for 31 years. Following his retirement, Leo and JoAnne continued to live in Little Falls where he resided until just a week before his death.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnne; sons, Thomas and wife Colleen of Plymouth, MN, and Mark of Little Falls; daughters, Carol Bonebrake and husband Dale of Sartell, MN, and Carleen Casey of St. Cloud, MN; brothers, Bill, Edward and Philip, all of Milwaukee, WI; sisters, Irene Lawerenz and Dorothy Brasnan, both of Milwaukee, WI, and Mary Headly of Holdingford, MN, and eight grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Joe and a sister, Sister Mary Philip Casey, OSF.

Casketbearers were Dale Bonebrake, Louie Smith, Zachary Casey and Bud Headly.

Gary Jones
Gary Donald Jones, age 48, died September 27, 1998, in Onamia, MN.
Funeral services were held October 1 at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Onamia with Rev. Rich Fitzer officiating. Military honors were provided by the Onamia Area Vets Club. Interment followed at the Onamia Area Veterans Cemetery.

Gary was born July 21, 1950, in Milaca, MN, to Delbert and Betty (Hicks) Jones. He grew up and attended school in Onamia. After graduation, he entered the Air Force in 1969. He married Linda Rieke in 1979 in Milaca. After working at Merit in Isle, MN, he became self-employed. He worked as a carpet layer, back hoe operator, snow plow driver and dump truck driver. He enjoyed spending time in the outdoors hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed sitting around the coffee table at the Cedarwood Restaurant in Onamia.

Survivors include his wife, Linda of Onamia; children, Donna and John of Onamia; mother, Betty Hohnwaldt of Onamia; brothers, Archie (Toni) Jones of Las Vegas, NV, Dave Jones of Minneapolis, MN, and Randy (Bobbi) Hohnwaldt of Onamia; sister, Diane (Ron) Hohnwaldt of Isle and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Cathy; father, Delbert; stepfather, Clarence and his grandparents, Art and Vonnie Hicks and Pete and Emma Jones.

Casketbearers were Wayne Benson, Jerry Gustafson, Rodney Jones, Doug Beck, Denny Elbert and Ed Jones.

Verna Mae Christensen
Verna Mae Christensen, age 93, died September 23, 1998, at the Issaquah Care Center in Issaquah, WA.

Funeral services were held at the Shelley-Gibson Funeral Home in Swanville, MN, on October 3. Burial followed at the Springbrook Cemetery.

Verna Mae was born August 5, 1905, in Akeley, MN, the daughter of Frank and Annie Close. The family moved to Garden City, MN, in 1907 and later they moved to a farm near Swanville in 1917. She graduated from Swanville High School in 1925. She married Herbert M. Johnson in 1936 who preceded her in death in 1956. Verna Mae worked in the Swanville Newspaper and also worked as a dark room technician for Silker Studio in Little Falls, MN. She moved to Bellingham, WA, in 1960 where she married Norman Christensen. He passed away in 1965. In 1979 she moved to Renton, WA. She attended the Renton Bible Church and, in her leisure time, she enjoyed reading and crocheting.

Survivors include her son, Douglas of Renton; one brother, Elsworth Close of Greenleaf, ID, and three sisters, Ruth Johnson of Little Falls, Fern Anderson of Minneapolis, MN, and Lois Sauter of Bethany, OK. The family suggests remembrances to the Renton Bible Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 2580, Renton, WA 98056.

Alvin Schafer
Alvin A. Schafer, age 81, a resident of Sauk Rapids, MN, died September 28, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

Funeral services were held October 1 at Annunciation Church in Mayhew Lake, MN, with Rev. Francis Britz officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Alvin was born October 16, 1916, to Ignatz and Mary (Ressemann) Schaefer. He married Geneva E. Court on January 27, 1940, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in St. Joseph, MN. He farmed all his life in the Mayhew Lake area. He was a member of Annunciation Church in Mayhew Lake, Foley Knights of Columbus #3603 (Bishop Marty Council), Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 622, a member of the Farm Bureau and the Northern Minnesota Draft Horse Association.

Survivors include his children and their spouses, Mary Lee Schwegel of Royalton, MN, Darlene and Jim Sanden of Princeton, MN, Richard and Marcie Schafer of Sauk Rapids and Debra Bauer of St. Cloud, MN; brothers and sisters, Leander of Sauk Rapids, Alma Blomker of St. Paul, MN, Barbara Noll of Richmond, MN, and Roseann Thelen of St. Martin, MN; 15 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and companion, Loretta Warzecha of Sauk Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Geneva on May 8, 1978; sister, Leona Willour and brother, Sylvester.

Casketbearers were Mark Meier, Mark Montag, Mathew Bauer, Dennis Brand, David Warzecha, Delroy Molitor, Melissa Schafer and Curtis Schwegel.

Honorary casketbearers were grandchildren.
