George Happke
George Happke, age 85, a resident of Pierz, MN, formerly of Lastrup, MN, died September 29, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were October 2 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Rev. Ken Brenny and Rev. Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was in the St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Lastrup.

George Happke was born November 30, 1912, in Pierz, to the late Robert and Christine ‘Boser’ Happke. He grew up in the Pierz area and attended District #92 school. After completing his schooling, George farmed in the Lastrup area. George was united in marriage to Alvina Tembruell in 1936 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. Alvina died on November 28, 1954. George was united in marriage to Florence Bossus on June 9, 1962, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Brainerd, MN. The couple farmed two miles North of Pierz. George enjoyed gardening, woodworking, music and farming. He was very devoted to his family and enjoyed visiting friends. George was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz.

Survivors include his wife, Florence B. Happke; sons, Bob Happke and wife Shirley of Lastrup, Alvin Happke of Mahtomedi, MN and David Happke of Rice, MN; daughters, Barb Bohrer and husband Ed of St. Paul, MN, Sylvia Gilson and husband David of Brainerd, Renee Litke and husband Larry of Pierz, Marie Flicker and husband Marn of Monticello, MN, Bea Gau and husband Collin of St. Cloud, MN; brothers, Al Happke of Pierz and Herbert Happke of Dearborn, MI; sisters, Angeline Dahmen and husband Mike of Pierz and Rita Tembruell of Plymouth, MN; 29 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alvina, five brothers, five sisters and a great-grandson, Brandon Happke.

Honorary pallbearers were John Walz, Bill Nagel, Alcuin Faust, Bob Toffefson, Don Tollefson and Ken Dahmen.

Pallbearers were Keith Happke, Jeff Kruschek, Tom Flicker, Travis Gau, Chris Happke and Kurt Litke.

Col. Harold M. Hammerbeck
Col. Harold M. Hammerbeck, age 81, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died September 30, 1998 at his home.

Funeral services will be held October 5 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with Rev. Nicholas Landsberger and Rev. Harold J. Kost officiating. Burial will be in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.

Friends may call Sunday from 5 - 9 p.m. and Monday from 8 a.m. until the hour of service at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls. Parish prayers will be held at 7 p.m., followed by the Little Falls American Legion rites at 7:30 p.m. and the Knights of Columbus Office for the Dead at 8 p.m. at the Shelley Funeral Chapel.

Col. Harold M. Hammerbeck was born August 3, 1917, in Little Falls to the late George and Carla ‘Jensen’ Hammerbeck. He grew up in Little Falls and graduated from the Little Falls High School in 1936. He enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard on October 4, 1938, with assignment to the 109th Quartermaster Company. He was called to active duty on February 10, 1941, and shipped to Camp Claiborne, Louisiana where he trained intensively until December, 1941 when he was sent to Fort Dix, New Jersey for overseas duty. He was on the first convoy to leave the United States for Europe in January, 1942, where he trained in Ireland until December, 1942. In January, 1943, he was shipped to North Africa, arriving in Algeria. His unit then crossed the Algerian Desert and participated in the Tunisia Campaign. He received a Battle Field Commission on August 30, 1943. In September, 1943, he went on to participate in the Invasion of Italy, landing at Salerno. He distinguished himself during action in the Apinine Mountains while serving as the Assistant Division Ordinance Maintenance Officer. He was united in marriage to Leone E. Stein on May 7, 1946, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton. Following their marriage, the couple made their home in Little Falls. Col. Hammerbeck returned to the Minnesota National Guard on December 13, 1946, and was again called into active duty on January 16, 1951. He witnessed an atomic bomb explosion in Nevada in 1952. He was released from active duty on October 20, 1952, and returned to the National Guard. Col. Hammerbeck served in a number of full time positions with the National Guard. Two of the most notable were as Camp Engineer and State Maintenance Officer. Col. Hammerbeck received several military assignments at the Pentagon and then retired from the military in September 27, 1977. Col. Hammerbeck was directly involved in the establishment of the Camp Ripley Military Museum and served on its Board of Directors. He designed and constructed many of the exhibit cases at the museum. Hammerbeck was very interested in preserving history and served on the Minnesota Historical Society and the Morrison County Historical Society Board. He helped restore Charles Lindbergh’s 1916 Saxon automobile to mint condition, worked to restore the Civil War Memorial Statue in Morris, MN, worked to restore the Civil War Cannon at Camp Ripley and other numerous endeavors. Some of his community endeavors have included: President of the Lindbergh PTA, President of St. Mary’s School Association, co-chair of the Swimming Pool Project, Chairman of the area United Fund, chairman of the Landfill Board, Chamber of Commerce President, chair of the Planning, Military Relations and Tourism Committees, Chair of the Airport Improvements and Expansion project, co-chair of the 1977 Lindbergh 50th Anniversary Air Show project and the 1983 Lindbergh Air Fair event, President of the Little Falls Exchange Club and many other contributions to the area. Col. Harold Hammerbeck was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Little Falls American Legion Post #46, the Little Falls VFW Post #1112 and the Little Falls Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife, Leone E. Stein; sons, Richard Stewart and wife Nancy of Chicago, IL, Bruce Hammerbeck and wife Patty of Little Falls, Keith Hammerbeck and wife Eileen of Cedar, MN, Kevin Hammerbeck of St. Louis Park, MN, and Daniel Hammerbeck of Clermont, FL; daughter, Lori Kneeland and husband Kurt of Little Falls; seven grandchildren, Jill, Jenny, Leisha, Lindsay, Kelly, Mark and Kassara; and, sisters, Norma Jacky of Duarte, CA, Alice Peterson Bloomington, CA, Betty Jarvis of Las Vegas, NV, and Phyllis Feia of St. Cloud, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carlyle Hammerbeck and a sister, Mildred Hammerbeck.

Adam D. Strack
Adam D. Strack, age 24, a resident of Randall, MN, died October 4, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
A memorial gathering was held October 6 at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Randall.

Adam Dale Strack was born on February 3, 1974, in Little Falls, MN, to Dale and Susan (Schmidt) Strack. He grew up near Randall and attended the local schools. He enjoyed working as a mechanic.

Survivors include his parents, Dale and Susan; one sister, Peggy Strack of Randall and two brothers, Patrick Strack and Russell Strack at home; his grandmothers, Lucille Schmidt of Randall and Isabelle Strack of Little Falls, as well as many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Stella Siminski
Stella Siminski, age 88, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died October 3, 1998, at her residence in Little Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial was held October 8 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Leroy Kremer officiating. Burial was in the St. Stanislaus Parish Cemetery in Sobieski, MN.

Stella was born February 27, 1910, to Felix and Pauline (Ringwelski) Shippritt of Sobieski. In 1926, she moved to Flint, MI, at the age of 16. Stella was united in marriage to John Siminski in Flint, in 1929. They moved back to the Little Falls area in 1946, where they farmed until John’s death in 1996. Stella was a cook in a local restaurant for 15 years. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church. Stella enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing.

Survivors include daughters, Marguerite M. Lund and husband Jerome of Maple Grove, MN, and Doris Skwira and husband Ed of Little Falls; brother Edmund Shippritt and wife Ann of Flint; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, four brothers and four sisters.

Jerry Wallace
Jerry Lee Wallace, age 57, a resident of rural Browerville, MN, died October 3, 1998, at home.

A family gathering was held October 8 at the family’s residence. A private burial took place in Montana.

Jerry was born July 5, 1941, in Floyd County, IA to Frank and Ruth (Baker) Wallace. He married (Margaret) Peggy Heronimus November 29, 1972, in Galina, IL. He grew up in Iowa. He lived in Montana for many years, working as a logger and truck driver. He had been on disability since 1985. He has lived near Browerville since June of 1990. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hunting and yard work.

Survivors include his wife Peggy of Browerville; children: two sons, Jerry Wallace Crosby, Cedar Falls, IA and Jeff Wallace, Charles City, IA; three daughters, Lori Lee Brimmer, Duluth, MN, Brandy (Dean) Sovich, Browerville and Julie (Dan) Piri, Long Prairie, MN; his granddaughter, Ashley Brimmer, at his home; one sister, Marian Carpenter of Water-loo, IA and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Beverly Brandt and Dorothy Berend.

Edward J. Vopatek
Edward J. Vopatek, age 84, a resident of South Long Lake, MN, died October 5, 1998, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd, MN.

Funeral services were held October 8 at the Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd with Father Paul Fruth officiating. Burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery by Camp Ripley with Military Honors provided by Brainerd VFW Post #1647.

Edward J. Vopatek was born December 4, 1913, in Lonsdale, MN, to Joseph and Anna (Rezac) Vopatek. He married Helen Dircks at St. Mathias Catholic Church on January 31, 1942. He served in the US Navy SeaBees during World War II.

Survivors include his wife Helen; one son, Ken and daughter-in-law, Lori Vopatek of Brainerd; five grandchildren, Jim Vopatek, Terri Bulanek, Tracy Vopatek, Mark Vopatek, and Dan Vopatek; one great-granddaughter, Catheryn Bulanek; and one sister, Emma Peterka of Montgomery, MN.

Jack Fitzgerald
Jack Fitzgerald, age 73, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died September 30, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN.
A graveside service was held on October 6 at Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.

Jack Fitzgerald was born on November 2, 1924, in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MN, to the late Clarence and Ruth (Lilgenberg) Fitzgerald. He grew up in Minneapolis where he attended and graduated from South High School in the class of 1942. He worked at at hardware store and at Cook Paints in Minneapolis. He was united in marriage to Harriet Nora Nelson on October 11, 1952. The couple moved to Little Falls in 1984 where he resided until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Harriet Fitzgerald (November 25, 1994).

Lillian Pigman

Lillian V. Pigman, age 92, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Cushing, MN, died April 11, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held April 14 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with Rev. Suzanne Cekalla officiating. Burial was in the Union Cemetery in Cushing.

Lillian was born April 5, 1906, in Cushing Township, MN, to the late Andrew J. and Amanda C. (Nordlund) Sundquist. She grew up on a farm 1.5 miles south of Cushing and attended School District #106. Lillian was united in marriage to Earl C. Pigman on October 1, 1930, at the Bethel Lutheran Church parsonage in Little Falls. The couple resided on the family farm near Cushing and later at Lake Alexander. They owned and operated the Standard Oil Station in Cushing for many years, until retiring in the late 1960s. Lillian served on the Cushing School Board and was a Cushing election judge. She was a former member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Cushing where she was church organist and sang in the choir. Lillian was also a member of the Ladies Aid, Cushing Women’s Club and the Cushing Community Club. She enjoyed, along with her brother and others, playing mandolin for community events. She enjoyed working outdoors and gardening. In her later years, Lillian refinished furniture which can be found in homes throughout Minnesota and beyond.

Survivors include her daughter, Jeanette Warner and husband Art of Little Falls; grandchildren, Stacy Warner and husband Jerome Salitros of Kailua, HI, Rev. Jill Warner of International Falls, MN, Glenys Warner of Little Falls and Erik Warner and wife Mary of Little Falls and great-grandchildren, Rianna, Ariel and Samuel Warner-Kelash and Ian, Olivia and Sebastian Warner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl on August 2, 1984; parents and brother, Axel Sundquist.
