Robert Watkins
Robert “Bob” Hezekiah Watkins, a resident of Fort Dodge, IA, died April 7, 1998, at Trinity Regional Hospital.

Services were held April 10 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church with the Rev. Allen E. Hermeier officiating. Burial was in Memorial Pak Cemetery with military rites by VFW Post 1856.

Robert was born January 5, 1922, in Asheville, NC, where he attended school. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and fought in Normandy, France, and the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the American Theater Medal, the Eamet Campaign Medal with Five Bronze Stars, the Victory Medal and several others. He was honorably discharged in 1945, and moved back to North Carolina. In 1963, he moved to Fort Dodge, where he worked for Becker’s Roofing. In 1967, he married Nina Erickson in Webster City. After their marriage, the couple lived in Fort Dodge where he worked in the Boston Store furniture department until retiring in 1986. He cared for his wife Nina until her death. In 1996, he married Velda Louise Miner in Fort Dodge, where they lived. He was a member of St. Olaf Lutheran Church and the Golden K. Kiwanis Club, Fort Dodge.

Survivors include wife Velda of Ford Dodge; stepdaughter, Marlene Berte of Fort Dodge; stepsons, Al Erickson of Little Falls, MN, Darwin Erickson of Lake Havasu City, AZ, David Erickson of Coeur d’Alene, ID, and Harland Erickson of Mill Creek, WA; sons, Ronald and Gary, both of Ohio, Hezekiah Robert, Jr., of Arizona; daughter, Sherry Dawn of Stillion, OH; several grandchildren and several great-grandchildren; brothers, John, Jr., of Bastic, NC, and Charles of Asheville, NC, and sisters, Ruby Flick of Lockport, NY, Ruth Pack and Edith Fowler, both of Lareniore, NC, Dora Watkins of Hendersonville, NC, and Nellie Jackson of Greenville, SC.

He was preceded in death by his parents, John Baptist and Dovie Mae Revis Watkins and first wife, Nina in 1992.

Gerald Schneider
Gerald H. Schneider, age 48, a resident of Holdingford, MN, died April 12, 1998, at the North Memorial Medical Center, Robbinsdale, MN, from injuries received in a farm tractor-semi truck accident near South Haven, MN, on March 29, 1998.

Funeral services were held April 15 at St. Lawrence’s Catholic Church in Duelm, MN.

Gerald was born December 20, 1949, in St. Cloud, MN, to Victor and Hildegard (Donabauer) Schneider. Gerald had been employed in general production at the Frigidaire Company in St. Cloud for 30 years. Gerald was a member of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers Local #623. He also farmed most of his life in Holdingford.

Survivors include his parents of Foley, MN; sisters and brothers, Barb Pappenfus of St. Cloud, Dorothy Ridge of Coon Rapids, MN, Victoria Corrigan of Foley, Julie Voigt of Pearl Lake, MN, Rosemary Hommerding of Sartell, MN, Richard of Foley and Roger of Bowlus. He is also survived by his longtime companion, Joyce Beumer of Holdingford.

Joseph Rodrigues

Joseph Adam Rodrigues, age 14, a resident of rural Motley, MN, died April 10, 1998, at North Memorial Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.

Funeral services were April 15 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Staples, MN, with Father Lauren Germann officiating. Burial followed in Esterday Cemetery.

Joseph Adam Rodrigues was born on February 7, 1984, in Artesia, CA, son of Ralph L. and Sheila (Bandy) Rodrigues. He grew up in California and moved to Staples with his family at an early age. He was currently in the seventh grade at the Staples-Motley Middle School. Joseph enjoyed various sports, especially football. He loved to ride bike and eat. He will be missed by all who knew him, especially his family.

Survivors include his parents, Sheila and Lewis Whelan of rural Motley, and Ralph L. Rodrigues of West Plains, MO; four brothers, Mario Rodrigues, Ralph “J.R.” Rodrigues, and Lewis A. Whelan II all at home, and Mathew Rodrigues of West Plains.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lewis A. Whelan; twin sisters, Brittany and Christie Whelan; and his paternal and maternal grandparents.

Virgil Golden
Virgil Golden, age 69, a resident of Rice, MN, died on April 11, 1998 at St. Cloud State Hospital.

Funeral services were held April 14 at Alliance Church in Sauk Rapids, MN. Burial was in MN State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.

Virgil was born in Smith Center, KS, on August 11, 1928, to Clarence and Effie (Logan) Golden. He has lived in Rice since 1958 and was self-employed as a Christmas tree farmer until retiring in 1995. He was a member of Alliance Church in Sauk Rapids and was an Army veteran of the Korean War.

Survivors include his brother, Gerald Golden of Rice and nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Jim Schlangen, Bob Steckling, Harry Scott, Troy Bondy, Veryl Fenlason and Don Fenlason.

Sylvia Roscoe
Sylvia Roscoe, age 80, a resident of rural Brainerd, MN, died April 10, 1998, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz.

Sylvia Roscoe was born in Brainerd on November 8, 1917, to Joseph and Anna (Hovilia) Hill. She had been a lifetime area resident. She married Lawrence H. Roscoe in Brainerd. Lawrence died in 1976.

Survivors include: two sons, Larry Roscoe of Brainerd and Richard Roscoe of Missoula, MT; two grandchildren, Mara and Kyle Roscoe; and two great-grandchildren, Matthew and Ryan.

She was preceded in death by her husband and several brothers and sisters.

Graveside services were April 15, at Evergreen Cemetery in Brainerd.

Jack Fitzgerald
Jack Fitzgerald, age 73, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died September 30, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, MN.
A graveside service was held on October 6 at Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.

Jack Fitzgerald was born on November 2, 1924, in Minneapolis, Hennepin County, MN, to the late Clarence and Ruth (Lilgenberg) Fitzgerald. He grew up in Minneapolis where he attended and graduated from South High School in the class of 1942. He worked at at hardware store and at Cook Paints in Minneapolis. He was united in marriage to Harriet Nora Nelson on October 11, 1952. The couple moved to Little Falls in 1984 where he resided until his death.

He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Harriet Fitzgerald (November 25, 1994).

Martha Canfield
Martha Marie Canfield, age 89, a resident of Swanville, MN, died October 5, 1998, at her home.

Funeral services were held October 9 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle, MN, with Rev. Ronald Tibbetts officiating. Interment was in Lake View Cemetery, Grey Eagle.

Martha was born July 11, 1909, in Ewington Township, Jackson County, MN, to the late Lorenz and Johanna (Jensen) Stumpf. She grew up and attended school in Ewington Township. She was united in marriage to Howard Canfield on November 29, 1931 at Grace Lutheran Church in Ewington Township. The couple made their home in the Worthington, MN, area. They moved to Slayton, MN, in 1947 where they farmed. In 1949, they moved to a farm southeast of Grey Eagle, MN, where they farmed until 1964. They continued to live on the farm for a year, at which time they moved to Swanville. Martha worked as a housekeeper at the Pine Edge Inn in Little Falls, cooked at Swanville School until her retirement in 1971 and then worked at the Swanville Senior Center. Martha had a large garden which she enjoyed caring for. She also enjoyed crocheting and bead work. Her family was most important to her. She was a charter member of both Grace Lutheran Church in Ewington Township and the American Lutheran Church in Worthington, MN, and was most recently a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle, MN.

Survivors include her sons, Delmar Canfield of Swanville, Norman Canfield and wife Arlene of Ellsworth, WI, Lorenz Canfield and wife Marleen of Fairfax, MN, and Leonard Canfield and wife Johnie of Winnamucca, NV; daughters, Anna Meagher and husband James of Grey Eagle, Luetta Rohde and husband Gerald “Bud” of Burtrum, MN, Marion Leebens and husband Lon of Slayton, Sylvia Hoffman and husband Eugene of St. Cloud, MN, Louise Walter and husband Roger of Little Falls, MN, and Elizabeth VanLith and husband Lampert of Delano, MN; sister, Louise Koning of Glencoe, MN; 50 grandchildren 99 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Howard Canfield June 25, 1975; daughters, Delores Graber and Gloria Clear; two brothers; five sisters; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers were Brian Canfield, Dustin Hoffman, Douglas Canfield, Jamie Clear, Debbie Canfield and Dale Canfield.

Casketbearers were Danny Graber, Mike Meagher, Wayne Rohde, Scott Leebens, John Walter and Joe Dolence.

Herman Tschida
Herman J. Tschida, age 71, a resident of Pierz, MN, died October 7, 1998, at the St. Cloud Hospital, St. Cloud, MN.

Funeral services were held October 9 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pierz with Rev. Kenneth Brenny officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Herman was born Mary 3, 1927, in Buh Township, Morrison County, MN, to the late John and Mary (Stangl) Tschida. He grew up on Buh Township and attended District #92 country school, graduating in 1940. Herman then farmed with his parents until entering the U.S. Army in July, 1945. He was honorably discharged in November, 1946 and returned to Pierz. Herman was united in marriage to Alice M. Schmidtbauer on September 13, 1949, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. He began working as a mechanic at Nagel Chevrolet in Pierz in December, 1946, and was promoted to parts manager. In July, 1980, he started working as a custodian at the Healy High School in Pierz until retiring in June, 1992. Herman enjoyed woodworking and visiting with his family and friends. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz, a life member of the Pierz American Legion Post 341 where he was a past commander and a member of the Little Falls VFW. Herman also served on the Pierz Fire Department from 1957 to 1995. He was the Pierz Fire Department’s Secretary from 1961-1995, and also served as the Secretary of the Relief Association from1961-1995.

Survivors include his wife, Alice M. Tschida; son, Thomas Tschida and wife Jonette of St. Cloud; daughter, Amy Tschida of Sauk Rapids, MN; brother, Leonard Tschida and wife Delores of Pierz; sister, Theresia Selinger of Little Falls and grandchildren, Jonathan and Kelcie Tschida of St. Cloud.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Conrad Tschida.

Honorary pallbearers were retired firemen Dan Stangl, Ken Dahmen, Ted Weber, Ron Litke, Harold Meyer and Lee Meyer.

Pallbearers were Neil Korf, Dale Janson, Greg Fuhrman, Tom Albrecht, Rod Boser and Gerald Stuckmayer.
