LeRoy W. Raddatz
LeRoy W. Raddatz, age 72, a resident of Maple Grove Township, died October 11, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were held October 14 at the First Lutheran Church in Brainerd, MN, with Reverend Lynn Broughton officiating. Burial was in the Dykeman Cemetery.

LeRoy was born April 1, 1926, in Redwood Falls, MN, to Arnold and Fern (Barrett) Raddatz. At the age of 10 they moved to Brainerd, MN. He attended country school. He marred Burnice Flansburg November 19, 1947, in Brainerd. He worked for Russell Creamery for two years, farmed in Platte Lake and Maple Grove Townships, worked on road construction, drove school bus for district 181, was a pipe fitter at Brainerd Rail Road shops, and worked at Brainerd Regional Human Resource Center from 1963-1988. He retired at age 62. He was treasurer of the Pine Center School Board, Council member and treasurer for Platte Lake Lutheran Church, was on the Soil Conservation Committee, was a member of the Senior Citizens of Garrison, was an active member of Senior Dance Club of Brainerd and Pequot Lakes, was a former member of the Wealthwood Gun Club of Garrison, was an active soloist for the community, was a former member of the Moose Club #1246 and the Eagles Club, avid deer hunter and a member of Light of the Cross Lutheran Church in Garrison.

Survivors include his wife Burnice; four sons, Michael Raddatz Sr. of Brainerd, Russell Raddatz of Grey Eagle, MN, Randy Raddatz of New London, MN, and Ricky Raddatz of Pine River, MN; three sisters, Betty Johnson of Brainerd, Shirley Holbrook of Brainerd and Donna Mogensen of Orem, UT; a brother, Elroy Raddatz of Brainerd; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Vonnie Herberg of Taylor Falls, MN.

Roland Ott
Roland Ott, age 73, a resident of Motley, MN, died October 12, 1998, at his home.

Funeral services were October 16 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Motley, with Reverend Edward Koehler officiating. Burial followed in the Motley Public Cemetery.

Roland Ehler Ott was born on November 21, 1924, in Nicollet, MN, to the late Henry and Bertha (Nothwehr) Ott. It was in this same area that he attended schools. As a young man he moved to the Henning area where he farmed with his brother. It was in Henning that Roland met Geraldine Marie Widhalm and was later united in marriage to her on June 9, 1962. They moved to Motley, where they have resided the past 33 years. Roland drove truck for LaVern Jenkins and also for Bjerga Feed before his retirement in 1988. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church. Above all Richard enjoyed his precious grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Geraldine; a daughter, Gina Kuechle of Upsala; five grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother and two sisters.

Cecil Van Orsdel
Cecil Edward Van Orsdel, age 94, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died October 7, 1998, at the Lutheran Care Center in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held October 10 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with the Rev. James Almquist officiating. Interment was in Oakland Cemetery in Little Falls.

Cecil was born on March 27, 1904, in Springfield Township, Cottonwood County, MN, to the late Fred and Amy (Swearingen) Van Orsdel. At the age of one year, his family moved to Marshall, MN. In 1912, at the age of eight, he moved with his family to Hugo, CO, and then to South Dakota. In 1915, he moved with his family to Elbow Lake, MN, where he graduated from high school with the Class of 1923. After high school, he farmed with his father on the family farm for four years. He was united in marriage to Gladys “Toots” E. Ostrom on March 29, 1928, in Elbow Lake, MN. After their marriage, he worked in Fergus Falls at a flour, seed and feed company. In 1934, the couple moved to Wadena, MN, where they farmed. In 1936, they relocated to Darling Township in Morrison County where they farmed. They later farmed south of Little Falls near Blanchard Dam. While his wife took care of the farm, he was employed with Becthel, Price and Calihan Construction Company, a private oil driller, in the Northwest Territories of Canada for 23 months, and in the Aleutian Islands for 21 months. In 1943, he went to work for Brown, Pacific and Maxium Construction Company and worked in Alaska for two years during which time the family moved to Little Falls. In 1946, he went to Guam in the Pacific for the same company and operated heavy equipment, also working for a short time in Hawaii and the Philippine Islands. He went to Greenland in 1947 and worked there for three and a half years in construction, building the Thule Army Base. He then returned to Little Falls and was employed at Crestliner Boats for 11 years, and then for 12 years at Larson Boats as a truck driver, carpenter and painter. Cecil was behind the wheel of the truck that pulled the first boat trailer with Larson Boats to Missouri and eventually traveled to all 50 states. In 1979, at the age of 69 years, he went to work at Larson Oil Company and also at the Dave Larson Grocery in Little Falls for six years. He also worked at the Clark Service Station (now called Jiffy) until January of 1997.

He was a member of the Lone Eagle Car Club and Carpenters Union 930. He was a recipient of the Good Neighbor Award on February 10, 1982, from WCCO Radio, Northland Ford Dealers and Northwest Orient Airlines for outstanding service with distinction to the people of the northwest and to friends and neighbors of Little Falls. He also won the Good Neighbor Award from the Little Falls Transcript. In addition, he was awarded The Book of Golden Deeds Award from the Little Falls Exchange Club in 1991.

Survivors include his sons, Douglas Van Orsdel and wife Patricia of Little Falls, David Van Orsdel and wife Dorothy of White Bear Lake, MN, and Darrell Van Orsdel and wife, Lee of Birmingham, AL; daughter, Mary Yungner and husband Alden of Champlin, MN; sister, Irma Glover of Olivehurst, CA; grandchildren, Scott, Kris, Stuart, Todd and Kip Van Orsdel, Eric and Matthew Yungner, Nathan Almquist and Martha Atnip and great-grandchildren, David, Danny and Christian Van Orsdel, Jordan and Piper Atnip and Cara Almquist.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Gladys “Toots” Van Orsdel (March 10, 1993); daughter, Doris Jean Almquist (September 16, 1980); infant granddaughter, Rebecca Almquist and sisters, Edith Van Orsdel and Lucy Magee.

Pallbearers were his grandchildren.

Thomas Seegers
Thomas L. Seegers, age 33, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died October 11, 1998, in Owatonna, MN, as a result of an accident.

Services were held October 17 at Salem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud, MN.

Thomas was born December 7, 1964, in Davenport, IA, to Raymond and Marjorie (Nystuen) Seegers. He had been a resident of Minnesota since 1992 and married Diane Helmin on October 21, 1995, at Salem Lutheran Church in St. Cloud. He was a 1983 graduate of Earlham High School, and received his B.A. degree in biology from Luther College in Decorah, IA, graduating in 1987. He received his BS Degree in secondary education from St. Cloud State University, graduating in 1994. He taught and coached at Little Falls Community Middle School from 1994-1996. He worked as a landscape designer for Helmin Landscaping in Rice for two years. He was a member of Windsor Heights Lutheran Church in Des Moines, IA.

Survivors include his wife, Diane of Little Falls; daughter, Paige, of Little Falls; parents, Raymond and Marjorie Seegers of West Des Moines, IA; sisters and brother, Rita Elliott of West Des Moines, IA, Paul Seegers of Cincinnati, OH, and Roxanne Seegers of Phoenix, AZ.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Dr. Arthur and Louise Seegers and Vernon and Esther Nystuen.

Mary Kobliska
Mary Kobliska, age 94, a resident of Staples, MN, died October 9, 1998, at the Greater Staples Care Center.

Funeral services were held October 13 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Staples with Reverend Alvin Jeske officiating. Burial was at the Union Cemetery in Cushing, MN.

Mary was born September 24, 1904, in Turtle Creek Township in Todd County, MN, to Vincent and Rose (Kominek) Kastanek. She grew up and attended school in central Minnesota. In 1926 she married Frank Kobliska in Alma, IA. They spent a year there before moving their family north of Motley, MN. In the fall of 1936, they moved to Fawn Lake Township before buying the family farm in 1937 in Turtle Creek Township where she lived until her health made it necessary to move to town. She was a long time member of the Lutheran Church in Lincoln, MN, and later a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Staples.

Survivors include her son, Frank Kobliska of Staples; daughter-in-law, Doris Kobliska of Staples; six grandchildren, Joseph (Judy) Kobliska of Little Falls, MN, Steven (Mary) Kobliska of Staples, Duane (Janet) Kobliska of Staples, Raymond (Terri) Kobliska of Staples, Carol (Larry) Sollie of Fosston, MN, and Deanna Kobliska of Staples; 15 great-grandchildren, Mark Kobliska of Little Falls, Karen Kobliska of Browerville, Jeffrey Kobliska of Staples, Hillary Kobliska of Brainerd, Jerry Kobliska of Staples, Jill Kobliska of Staples, Julie Kobliska of Staples, David Kobliska of Staples, Lisa Kobliska of Staples, Raymond Kobliska, Jr., of Staples, Jessica Kobliska of Staples, Keisha Sollie of Fosston, Ryan Kobliska of Staples, Karina Sollie of Fosston and Kylie Jo Sollie of Fosston and a great-great-grandson, Garrett Kobliska.

She was preceded in death by her parents; six sisters; four brothers; her husband; a son, Joseph and a grandson, Michael.

Elmer Van Heel
Elmer J. Van Heel, age 73, a resident of Swanville, MN, died October 13, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held October 16 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville with Rev. Thomas Meyer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Elmer was born May 15, 1925, near Freeport, MN, to Frank and Agnes (Notch) Van Heel. He grew up near Freeport and attended Sacred Heart School in Freeport. Elmer was united in marriage to Monica A. Weber on February 4, 1948, at St. Rosa Lima Catholic Church in St. Rosa, MN. The couple lived in Wadena, MN, for two years where Elmer worked for an insulating company. In 1950, they purchased a farm in Culdrum Township, near Swanville, and farmed until semi-retiring in 1981. Elmer was also a substitute school bus driver for the Swanville Schools for many years. He enjoyed farming and visiting with family, friends and neighbors. Elmer spend many hours helping to build the new St. John’s Church and always offered his assistance to people who had a need. He was a member of St. John’s Catholic Church, former member of the Swanville Sportsmen Club and St. John’s Men’s Club.

Survivors include his wife, Monica; sons, David Van Heel and wife Karen of Swanville and Mark Van Heel of Swanville; daughters, Jan Dorris and husband Stan of Texarkana, TX, Linda Ewald and husband Paul of Monticello, MN, Karen Clizbe of Memphis, TN, Diane Slimmer and husband Dan of Rice, MN, Laurie Gradin and husband Dan of Swanville and Brenda Van Heel of Minnetonka, MN; mother, Agnes Van Heel of Sauk Centre, MN; sisters, Leona Schloegl and husband Bernard of Sauk Centre, Val Schrantz and husband Don of Sauk Centre, Louise Minette and husband Al of Sauk Centre, Marian Huschle and husband Jerry of Bagley, MN, Lorraine Bierschbach of Melrose, MN, and Bernice Roering of Melrose; brothers, Art Van Heel and wife Dorothy of Freeport, MN, Francis Van Heel and wife Joan of Roseville, MN, Robert Van Heel and wife Janice of Freeport and Virgil Van Heel and wife Joann of Shakopee, MN; 15 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by his father, Frank in 1961 and a daughter, Eileen Vanselow in 1973.

Pallbearers were David, Mark, Shawn and Michael Van Heel, Paul Vanselow and Stan Dorris.

Sister Mary Leone Furnstahl
Sister Mary Leone (Mary Bede) Furnstahl, age 75, died October 12, 1998, at St. Francis Convent, Little Falls, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial took place at St. Francis Convent on October 16.

Sister Mary Leone received a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the College of St. Catherine, St. Paul, MN, and a bachelor’s degree in theology from St. Joseph’s College, Rensselaer, IN. She also studied at Marquette University, Milwaukee, WI, the College of St. Benedict, St. Joseph, MN; University of Minnesota, Morris; the College of St. Scholastica, Duluth, MN; and Bemidji State University, Bemidji. She ministered as an elementary teacher, principal, librarian, Right to Read and basic skills director, media director and consultant, and an aide in the archives of St. Francis Convent. She served in St. Nicholas, Morris, Elk River, St. Cloud, Waite Park, Osakis, and Little Falls.

Survivors include brothers, John and wife Dolores of Lexington, MA, and Leo and wife Carol of Pine River, MN; sisters, Sister Therese and Sister Anne of Little Falls; sisters-in-law, Arlene of Little Falls and Lorraine of St. Cloud and her Sisters in religious life.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, Charles and Joseph.

Robert DeRosier
Robert M. DeRosier, age 84, a resident of rural Brainerd, MN, died October 12, 1998, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held October 15 at St. Mathias Catholic Church with Father John Pearson officiating. Burial was in St. Mathias Cemetery.

Robert was born in St. Mathias Township, MN, on April 21, 1914, to Delore and Mary (DeChaino) DeRosier. He had been a lifetime area resident and had been a member of St. Mathias Catholic Church and St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Brainerd. He married Mary Chaino on June 23, 1936.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret; two daughters, Becky Young and Joy Fleischhacker, both of Brainerd; two sons, Robert DeRosier, Jr., and Larry DeRosier, both of Brainerd; 11 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one sister, Leona Pearson and family caregiver, Eddie Swaithies, both of Brainerd.
