Mrs. Dennis (JoAnn) Dahl
Mrs. Dennis (JoAnn) Dahl, age 50, a resident of Little Falls, MN, and formerly of Long Prairie, MN, died January 1, 1999, at her home in Belle Prairie Township, Morrison County, MN.

Funeral services were held January 4 at First Lutheran Church in Little Falls, with the Rev. David Steffenson officiating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Long Prairie.

JoAnn Dahl was born September 4, 1948, in Bertha, MN, to the late Bertrice (Gorghuber) Cuchna and Kenneth Cuchna. She grew up in Long Prairie where she attended and graduated from Long Prairie High School in 1966. JoAnn then attended nurses training at Northwestern Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN, where she received her RN degree. She was united in marriage to Dennis J. Dahl on December 21, 1968, in Long Prairie. Following their marriage, the couple moved to San Diego, where Dennis was in the U.S. Navy. They later lived on a naval base on Whidby Island, WA, and later spent two years Sicily. After returning to the United States, JoAnn worked at the Browerville Hospital in Browerville, MN, and later took a position with Todd County Public Health, where she worked until being diagnosed with cancer in January of 1997. In October of 1994 the family moved to Little Falls. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Little Falls where she worked on several committees, such as the Paint-a-Thon, Habitat For Humanity, and where she started the Christmas Giving Tree. She enjoyed quilting and making dolls. She was a member of the Prairie Point Quilters group.

Survivors include her husband, Dennis; son, Jon and wife Sarah and grandson, Lucas Dahl all of Rosemount, MN; daughters, Jennifer Dahl of Eden Prairie, MN and Christa Dahl at home; father, Kenneth Cuchna and stepmother Leona Cuchna of Long Prairie; sister, Donna Lisson and husband, Tony of Long Prairie; brother-in-law, Dick Dahl of Boston, MA, and mother-in-law, Gladys Dahl of Little Falls; nephews, Chris and Todd Lisson of Long Prairie; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Beatrice Cuchna in 1965 and an infant brother.

Casketbearers were Jim Loving, Doug Eckes, Tim Rice, Jim Peterson, Galen Swoboda and Bob Just.

Margaret Gerwing
Margaret Gerwing, age 80, a resident of Pierz, MN, died December 31, 1998, at St. Mary’s Villa in Pierz.

Mass of Christian Burial was held January 5, 1999, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Ken Brenny officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery.

Margaret was born September 24, 1918, to John and Johanna (Muehlbauer) Zormeier near Little Rock, MN. She was united in marriage to Herman Gerwing on October 4, 1939, in Buckman, MN. Herman and Margaret managed a dairy farm in Buh Township near Pierz for 39 years where they raised four sons. They retired to a home on Pierz Fish Lake where they resided for 19 years from 1978-1997. Margaret loved to travel. She and Herman accompanied their sons on numerous trips to Mexico, Hawaii, and Europe. She was an avid fisherman accompanying Herman just about every time he went out. She was an excellent cook and baker, specializing in potato dumplings and apple pies. Her latest interests involved going to the casinos and trying her luck on the slots.

Survivors include her husband, Herman C. Gerwing of Pierz; sons, Dennis Gerwing and wife Patricia of Eagan, MN, David Gerwing and wife Lenna of Denver, CO, Wayne Gerwing and wife Marlete of Eagan, MN, and Mark Gerwing and wife Debra of Little Falls, MN; sister, Mrs. Roy (Marie) Czech of Sauk Rapids, MN; brother, Math Zormeier of Sauk Rapids; sister, Mrs. Joseph (Louise) Simon of Buckman; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters, Clara Dubbin, Mathilda Rothstein and Barbara Tretter and brothers, George and Joseph Zormeier.

Casketbearers were Dennis, David, Wayne, Mark, Jeffrey and Shane Gerwing.

Ernest Hinrichs
Ernest “Ernie” Hinrichs, age 55, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died January 2, 1999, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.

Memorial services were held January 5 at Bethel Lutheran Church with Reverend Kent Garlinghouse officiating.

Ernest was born January 22, 1943, in Thief River Falls, MN, to Ernest and Mabel Hinrichs. He was a humorous man, who lived life with integrity and honesty. Ernest loved the outdoors. He worked for T.O. Plastics for 26 years, then started his own successful injection molding company, E.B.H. Manufacturing. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Ernest was noted for his upbeat personality. He was a member of the NRA, Ducks Unlimited and Bethel Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly of Little Falls; sons, Troy Patrick of Tulsa, OK, Todd Phillip and wife Linda of Andover, MN, and Timothy Paul and wife Dawn of Bemidji, MN; five brothers, Arthur and wife Darlene of Thief River Falls, Orland and wife Barbara of Sturtevant, WI, Jerome of Red Lake Falls, MN, Roger and wife Pam of Red Lake Falls and Stephen and wife Beverly of Cook, MN; five sisters, Patricia Nelson and husband Ray of Rock, MI, Lorraine Wheeler of Staples, MN, Judith DeRosier and Dale of Fort Ripley, MN, Sandra Helleson and husband Dale of Farmington, MN, and Margaret Langevin and husband Charles of Corcoran, MN; three grandchildren, Ellie, Abby and Sydney; sister-in-law, Diane Renaud of Marquette, MI, seven nieces, 15 nephews and two aunts.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Casketbearers were Troy, Todd and Tim Hinrichs, Jeff Pearson, Larry Filippi and Chad Hinrichs.

Exilda Pierzinski
Exilda Pierzinski, age 77, a resident of Harding, MN, passed away December 30, 1998, at her home.

Mass of Christian Burial was held January 2, 1999, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Harding with Father Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was at Holy Cross Parish Cemetery.

Exilda was born January 20, 1921, to John and Josephine (Davieau) Doucette in Ripley Township where she attended country school. Exilda was united in marriage to Walter Pierzinski on May 2, 1944, in Belle Prairie. Most of her life, she lived in the Harding area. Exilda loved embroidery, canning, baking, gardening and bingo.

Survivors include her husband, Walter John Pierzinski of Harding; sons, Gary Pierzinski and wife Carol of Brainerd, MN, and Allen Pierzinski and wife Tammy of Little Falls, MN; daughter, Linda Tautges and husband Wally of Fort Ripley; brother, Duane Doucette of Brainerd, MN; sisters, Sadie Brill of Fort Ripley, Marcella Barton of Little Falls and Louise Valley of Fairfield, CA, and three grandchildren, Melanie Pierzinski, Amanda Doucette (Tautges) and Brandon Tautges.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters and two brothers.

Casketbearers were Jim Vogl, Steve Vogl, Jim Bieganek, Kenny Knopik, Florian Pierzinski and Eddie Schubert.

Carl Langer
Carl Langer, age 86, a resident of Pierz, MN, died December 31, 1998, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

Mass of Christian Burial was held January 4, 1999, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz with Father Ken Brenny officiating. Burial was at St. Joseph’s Parish Cemetery.

Carl was born February 12, 1912, to Peter and Mary (Stumpf) Langer in Pierz. Carl was united in marriage to Martha Koll on June 16, 1947, in Randall, MN. He took over farming from his dad. Carl farmed until he retired at age 62. He then worked for Green Thumb until he turned 80 years old, at which time he fully retired.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Langer of Pierz; sons, John Langer of Waite Park, MN, Jerome Langer and wife Pat of St. Cloud, MN, and Gerald Langer of St. Cloud; daughters, Catherine Paquin and husband Jim of Somerset, WI, and Mary Langer of Brainerd, MN; brothers, Frank Langer of Somerset, Louis Langer of Stillwater, MN, and George Langer of Pine City, MN; sisters, Hilda Swaser of West St. Paul, MN, Laura Smith of Mesa, AZ, and Margaret Lawrence of California, and grandchildren, John, Tina, Sara and Jeffrey.

He was preceded in death by his son, Lawrence; daughter, Teresa; his parents, Peter and Mary; brothers, Albert and Herman and sisters, Sr. Mary Marina and Juliana.

Casketbearers were grandchildren and nephews.

Donna Sumner
Donna Sumner, age 67, died December 30, 1998.

A memorial service was held January 12, 1999, at the Lutheran Church in Eden Valley, MN.

Donna enjoyed cooking, reading, researching the Civil War, various needle work, traveling, and participating in religious activities. As a volunteer, she was actively involved in Civil Air Patrol for 20 years, earning the rank of Major and acquiring 400+ hours of flight time as an observer and navigator. She served as a member of the St. Cloud Squadron and North Central Region Staff. Her active life included working as an elementary teacher in Sauk Rapids, MN, high school English teacher and drama coach in Big Lake, MN, speech therapist in Sartell/St. Stephen, MN, and business manager at Wilson Learning Corporation in Eden Prairie, MN.

Survivors include her beloved husband and best friend, Don of Paynesville, MN; three daughters along with their spouses and father, Vicki and Steve Tharaldson of Eagan, MN, Sheli and Mark Pollard of Eagle River, Ontario, Canada, Bobbie and Steve McLaird of Brooklyn Park, MN, and Bob Mattson of Sauk Rapids, MN; five stepchildren and their spouses, Bill Sumner of Minneapolis, MN, Nancy and Rick Tallman of Houston, MN, Barbara and Joe Gans of Aitkin, MN, Tom Sumner of Minneapolis, and John and Kristi Sumner of Rhode Island; six grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lila Schandel of Cloquet, MN and Arlene Kristopeit of South Milwaukee, WI.

She was preceded in death by her parents Armand and Mildred Rebischke, and son-in-law, Ron Geisel.

Leona L. Schwintek
Leona L. Schwintek, age 83, a resident of Stover, MO, died January 9, 1999, at St. Mary’s Health Center in Jefferson City, MO.

Funeral services were held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on January 12. Rev. James O’Sullivan officiated. Interment was at Greenmore Memorial Gardens, Barnett, MO.

Leona was born May 29, 1915, at St. Wendell, MN, to Frank and Christina (Gallus) Yamry. She married Henry Peter Schwintek August 7, 1934, at St. Wendell. They moved to Missouri in 1966 from Minnesota. She was employed as a factory worker most of her life. She was an avid fisherman and Bingo player. She loved crocheting, card playing and traveling.

Survivors include daughters, Betty Byrd of Barnett, MO, Sylvia Doble of Clearwater, MN, Adeline Pusc of Rice, MN, Alvina Whipper of Clearwater, MN, Delphine Olson of Dassel, MN, Mary Ann Douvier of Holdingford, MN, and Rose Thompson of Stover, MO; sons, Leander of Clear Lake, MN, Jim of Bethel, MN, Jerome, Ron and Roger of Eldon, MO; 36 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; brothers, Alphonse Yamry of Holdingford and Leonard Yamry of St. Cloud, MN; sisters, Alice LeClair of Osseo, MN, Ludvina Glavitz of Osseo and Pearl Gardell of Seattle, WA; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Henry on August 6, 1984, one grandson, one great-grandson, one great-granddaughter, four brothers and four sisters.
