Alois Kastner
Alois F. “Al” Kastner, age 88, a resident of Pierz, MN, formerly of the Freedhem, MN, area, died January 20, 1999, at the St. Cloud Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held January 23 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie, MN, with Rev. Harold J. Kost officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Al was born July 14, 1910, near Freedhem to the late Joseph and Mary (Zimbrick) Kastner. He grew up near Freedhem and attended country school. Al then began farming in Ripley Township. He was united in marriage to Viola E. Bellefeuille on November 25, 1941, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie. The couple continued to farm in Ripley Township until purchasing a farm in 1954 in Buh Township. In 1979, the couple retired from farming and moved to the Platte River Estates. Al was known for the rock fence he built on the farm in Ripley Township. He also enjoyed playing cards, gardening and playing croquet. Al was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie and the NFO (National Farmers Organization).

Survivors include his wife, Viola E. Kastner; son, Glen Kastner and wife Sue of Milwaukee, WI; daughters, Diane Kastner of Belle Prairie, Karen Kirt and husband Randy of St. Cloud, MN, and Pauline Kastner and fiance Allen Schneider of Little Falls, MN; brothers, Herb Kastner and wife Joan of Minneapolis, MN, and Ralph Kastner and wife Billie of El Paso, TX; sister, Helen Miller of Minneapolis and Lorraine Paske of Monticello, MN; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Lyle Kastner; a grandson, Shelby Kirt and a sister, Ann McCarthy.

Pallbearers were Joshua and Jeremy Kirt, Kurt Knopik, Scott Kastner, Keith McCarthy and Clyde Bellefeuille.

Alfred A. Mengelkoch
Alfred A. Mengelkoch, age 82, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Golden Valley, MN, died January 25, 1999.

Mass of Christian Burial was January 20 at The Church of St. Thomas the Apostle, Corcoran, MN. Interment was at the Thomas Cemetery.

Ida Swartz
Ida Swartz, age 83, a resident of Motley, MN, died January 25, 1999, at the Greater Staples Care Center.

Funeral services were held January 29 at the United Methodist Church in Motley with Reverend Larry Hager officiating. Burial followed in the Motley Public Cemetery.

Ida Agnes Swartz was born December 21, 1915, in Marysville, IA, to David Alfred and Ida Mae (Leigh) Frye. She grew up in South Central MN, attending school in Vernon Center and Granada. On March 12, 1938, she married Earl Mellnot Swartz in Estherville, IA. Together they farmed near Wabasso for a time before buying a farm near Kerkhoven. In 1955, they moved to their farm near Motley where he has lived and worked up until the last couple of years. Ida was a member of the United Methodist Church in Motley.

Survivors include two sons, Richard Swartz of Motley, and Jerry Swartz of Alexandria, MN; three daughters, Janet Flickinger of Motley, Linda Mudgett of Pillager, MN, and Leota Tollefson of Belgrade, MN; a sister, Jean Miexell of Princeton, MN; four stepsons, Chuck Swartz of So. St. Paul, MN, Earl Swartz of Starbuck, TN, Keith Swartz of Las Vegas, NV, and Raymond Swartz of Portland, OR; 64 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Earl, in 1971; three brothers; two sisters and eight stepchildren.

Irene E. Lapos
Irene E. Lapos, age 76, a resident of Barnesville, MN, died January 21, 1999, in the Barnesville Good Samaritan Center where she lived for the last five years suffering with Alzheimer’s.

The funeral mass was held January 25 at Assumption Catholic Church in Barnesville with Father Jim Bernauer presiding. Burial was at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Barnesville.

Irene, daughter of John and Mary (Stavish) Goodman, was born April 22, 1922, in rural Flensburg, MN, where she attended school and grew to womanhood. She married Florian (Joe) Lapos on September 1, 1941, in Flensburg. The couple made their home in Rockford, IL, where she worked in a munitions plant during World War II. In 1946 they moved to Minneapolis and, in 1950, to Barnesville where they owned and operated the Shamrock Tavern until 1968. They had two sons, James and Bradley. She worked for West Central Turkeys in Pelican Rapids for 14 years before retiring. Mr. Lapos died in 1980. She continued to live in Barnesville and, in 1994, became a resident of the Barnesville Good Samaritan Center. It was there she lived until the time of her death. She was a member of Assumption Catholic Church, St. Ann’s Guild and the Ladies Foresters. She was also a member of the VFW Post 4628 Women’s Auxiliary and the Maurice E. Masterson American Legion Post 153 Women’s Auxiliary, both in Barnesville.

Survivors include one son, Bradley (Terry) Lapos of Barnesville; two sisters, Anne Zilka of Clarkston, MI and Gertrude Gradin of Suison City, CA; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joe; her son, James of New York Mills; and two sisters, Lillian Goodman and Geneveve Backowski, both of Flensburg.

Winifred White
Winifred “Winnie” M. White, age 82, a resident of Brainerd, MN, formerly of Little Falls, MN, died January 18, 1999, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd.

Funeral services were held January 23 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls with Rev. Robert Kemper officiating. Burial was in the Darling Cemetery.

Winifred was born August 16, 1916, in Stevens County, MN, to the late Edward and Ida (Roberts) Bastin. She grew up in Stevens County and attended school in Villard, MN. She lived at home until 1937. Winifred was united in marriage to Luverne J. White on October 23, 1937, in Hancock, MN. The couple moved to the Freedhem area and farmed until 1961. They sold the farm and relocated to Little Falls, where Winnie worked as a cook and waitress at the Maid Rite Cafe. In 1962, she purchased the Maid Rite and operated it until 1965. Shortly thereafter, Winnie opened the Coffee Cup Cafe in Little Falls and operated it until retiring in 1981. Since August, 1998, she has resided at the Harmony House in Brainerd. Winnie enjoyed cooking, making Christmas cakes and sewing. She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Little Falls.

Survivors include her son, Calvin J. White and wife Bev of Merrifield, MN; daughter, Faye Petron and husband Clarence of Little Falls; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Luverne White in 1992; parents; one brother and one sister.

Pallbearers were Steve and Richard Petron, Kevin and Keith White and Brent Senger.

Victoria Johannes
Victoria Jean Johannes, age 50, of Willmar, MN, died unexpectedly January 24, 1999, at her home.

Funeral services were held January 27 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Willmar with Rev. Steven Bielenberg officiating. The interment was at the St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery near Swanville, MN.

Victoria was born October 6, 1948, in St. Paul, MN, the daughter of Betty Lou (Rasmussen) and William Spaulding. She grew up in the Twin Cities and Kenyon areas and graduated from the Mounds View High School in 1967. On January 30, 1968, she was married to Frank Henry Johannes at the Cross of Glory Lutheran Church in Mounds View, MN. They made their home in the Minneapolis, MN, area for about two years and then moved to Little Falls, before moving to Willmar about 1971. Victoria had worked for the Timber’s Restaurant, McMillan’s Restaurant and the Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar. She had also operated a day care center in Willmar for 13 years and has had 29 foster children in her home. She was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church, enjoyed her family, enjoyed children, enjoyed many forms of craft work and the collecting of dolls.

Survivors include her husband, Frank; one daughter, Sarah Johannes of Willmar; mother, Betty Lou Williams of Willmar; father, William (and Joyce) Spaulding of Fredrick, WI; sisters, Linda (and Frank) Fraschingbauer of Forest Lake, MN, Rosie Windsperger of Brooklyn Center, MN, Cindy (and Tim) Reinke of Coon Rapids, MN, Debbie (and John) Abrego of Minneapolis and Christine (and Vince) Henry of Minneapolis, besides other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her grandparents and one infant foster son, Wayne.

Leo Michalek
Leo M. Michalek, age 78, a resident of Randall, MN, died January 25, 1999, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held at the Shelley Funeral Chapel on January 28 in Little Falls with Rev. Suzanne Cekalla officiating. Burial was in the Randall City Cemetery.

Leo was born July 28, 1920, in Philbrook, MN, to the late Helen Michalek. He grew up in the Philbrook area until moving with his mother to Minneapolis, MN. Leo attended Minneapolis South High School, graduating with the class of 1937. Leo was united in marriage to Dorothy Strand on January 7, 1940, in St. Paul, MN. The couple moved back to the Philbrook area where he worked on the railroad. Leo entered the United States Army on November 30, 1943, serving in Italy until 1945. He was honorably discharged June 25, 1945. In 1945, he purchased the Shell Filling Station in Randall which he owned for five years. Leo then began working for National Bushing and Standard Auto Parts stores in Little Falls for a few years. He worked road construction throughout Minnesota until retiring. Leo was past post commander of the Randall VFW and a member of the Randall Sportsman Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, turkey hunting, ice fishing, muzzle loading and working on old cars.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy of Randall; daughter, Jeri Betts and husband Larry of Little Falls; granddaughter, Tonia and husband Gerry Maciej of Foley, MN.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Helen and sister, Grandeline Henke.

In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to Morrison County Relay for Life.

Ed Boser
Ed Boser, age 89, a resident of Lastrup, MN, died January 20, 1999, at his home.

Mass of Christian Burial was held January 23 at St. John’s Catholic Church in Lastrup with Father Roger Thoennes officiating. Burial was at St. John’s Parish Cemetery.

Ed was born October 11, 1909, to John and Philomine (Brummer) Boser in Pierz, MN. Ed was united in marriage to Helen Leidenfrost on November 15, 1933, in Pierz. He farmed until 1971. In 1972, he moved to Lastrup where he retired. Ed also sold barn equipment for many years.

Survivors include his son, Jim Boser and wife Donna of De Smet, SD; daughters, LaVerne Bzdok and husband George of Little Falls, MN, and Karen Schommer and husband Vernon of Pierz; daughter-in-law, Pat Boser of Lastrup; grandchildren, Val, Donny, Kim, Debbie, Shelly, Minnie, Chad, Mark and Jeff and great-grandchildren, Krystal, Jacob, Tommy, Celka Elizabeth, Bryce, Hunter, Caleb, Kendra and Troy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Helen and sons, Kenneth and Ronnie Boser.

Casketbearers were Donny Schommer, Chad Boser, Jeff Boser, Ryan Hoheisel, Tom Boser, Mark Boser and Jason Boser.

Honorary casketbearers were Leo Strezick, Eddie Girtz, Allan Franz, John Fisher, Larry Woitalla, Darrel Boser, Leon Boser and Daryl Johnson.
