John Stewart
John Stewart died Nov. 21, 2003, at home in Mesa, Ariz., of complications from diabetes and kidney failure. He was 80.

Born Oct. 4, 1923 in Duluth, he attended Central and joined the Army in 1941. A member of the 601st Tank Destroyer Battalion, he was awarded the Purple Heart for action in southern France. He also served in Africa and Italy. John married Donna Coons of Proctor in 1946. He retired from the NP/Burlington Northern in 1973 when they became 'snowbirds' and found a new hobby as ham radio operators. His call letters were N0AOB.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, a son Darryl of Caribou Lake, a daughter Barbara Helgren of Mesa, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Following John's wishes to be cremated, there will be no services.

Richard Alan "Spider" Shovein
Services were held Saturday for Richard Alan 'Spider' Shovein. He died Wed., Dec. 3, 2003, as a result of an automotive accident. He was 55.

The lifelong Proctor resident was born on May 27, 1948 to Earl and Lucy Shovein in Duluth. He was a member of St. Rose Parish, where he was an usher. He attended St. Rose School and graduated from Proctor High School in 1966. He worked for the DM&IR Railroad for 24 years and served as local chairman for the Maintenance of Way Union. He was a candidate for Proctor City Council. Spider loved auctions, working on old cars, dancing and playing golf with his buddies.

He was preceded in death by grandparents Philip and Hazel Shovein, and George and Esther Hendrickson, and a stepson William Gallo.

He is survived by his sons Tim and Richard Jr., both of Proctor, his parents Earl and Lucy Shovein of Duluth, brothers Gerald (Esther) of St. Paul, Robert (Barb) and John, both of Duluth, and Philip (Jeanette) of Proctor, sisters Linda (Craig) Larsen of Proctor, Mary Bogenholm of Superior and Joanne Shovein (Gary Anderson) of Duluth, stepchildren Angela Gallo of No. Carolina, and Seabrin, Ryan and Keith Britt of Fla., two step-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and his dog Hannah.

Services were held in St. Rose Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. James Bissonette officiating. Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.

Alvin P. "Pete" Burke
Former Proctor American Legion Commander Alvin P. 'Pete' Burke died Thurs., Dec. 4, 2003, in Duluth. He was 89.

He was born in Duluth and raised in the West End. He attended Denfeld High School. Pete worked at the Cass Lake CCC Camps, before enlisting in the U.S. Army. He served during World War II in the African and European Theaters. Pete married Veer Sackette on Nov. 19, 1949. Together they owned Burke's Beauty Salon in West Duluth for over 35 years. He was employed for many years at Chun King Corporation until its closing in 1966. He also worked at Duluth Salvage until his retirement in 1976.

He is survived by his sons Peter (Judy) of Eden Prairie, Paul and Perry of Duluth, and Patrick (Diane) of Proctor, daughters Joyce Gearns of Edinburgh, Scotland and Pamela (Glen) Ellison of Duluth, a brother John (Juanita) of Mexico, sisters Joy (Lyle) McKnight of Seattle and Beverly (Willie) Jyrkas of St. Paul, and ten grandchildren.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Madelyn A. Bonsignore
Madelyn A. Bonsignore, who graduated as valedictorian from Proctor High School in 1938 and was formerly the publications director at the National League of Women Voters in Virginia, died Thurs., Nov. 27, 2003, while visiting the home of her daughter in Charlottesville, Va. She was 81.

Madelyn was born Jan. 8, 1922, in Proctor to John and Evelyn Kleutsch. She was a graduate of Duluth State Teachers College, and earned a master's degree in English from the University of Chicago. They lived in Chicago, until the family moved to Virginia in 1970. Madelyn and Joe traveled the world and returned regularly to Ayia Galini, Crete, often accompanied by Donna Kleutsch. They spent the last ten summers in Duluth at UMD.

She is survived by her husband Joseph, children Mark (Elspeth), Judith, Jay (Julie), Andrea, Donna (Jay), Regina (Richard), foster-son Lalo Guerra (Marta), six grandchildren, sister Donna Kleutsch, brother Jeremiah (Barbara) Kleutsch, and many loving sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Memorials in lieu of flowers requested to Proctor Historical Society, c/o City Hall, 100 Pionk Dr., Proctor, MN 55810.

Wayne H. Putnam
Wayne H. Putnam, who lived in Midway Township most of his life before moving to Proctor, died Wed., Dec. 10, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. He was 69.

He was born in Wayne, Neb. to Floyd and Mae Putnam. Wayne had been married to his wife Suzanne 'Sue' Mullen for 50 years. He worked for U.S. Steel until it closed, and then went to work for Diamond Tool until he retired. He was a very kind and generous man, who donated to many charities such as the Make a Wish Foundation, and the Cancer Foundation For Children. He was a lifelong member of the Salvation Army Church, where he volunteered for numerous functions, such as driving vans and Toyland Express. He served his country in the U.S. Navy while stationed in Hawaii.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Wayne is survived by his wife Suzanne, sons Keith A. (Lori), and Paul W. Sr. (Iris), daughters Shannon L. Putnam and Stacie A. (Virgil) Keutzer, and grandchildren Joshua, Johnnie Ann, Shawn, Paul Jr. 'Brandon', Jeremiah, and Cody.

William A. Miller
William A. "Bill" Miller, a lifelong Munger resident of Hermantown Road, Duluth, passed away Fri., Dec. 12, 2003, at home after a three-year battle with ALS. He was 73.

He was born to William and Katherine (Grams) Miller Aug. 14, 1930. He attended Munger Elementary and then Proctor High School. Bill spent two years in the Army and an additional six years in the Reserves. He retired from the DM&IR in 1986, after 40 years of service. He was a member of Solway Senior Citizens, Proctor Moose, and NARVRE.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and three brothers.

Bill is survived by his wife of 33 years Lorraine (Garlinghouse) Miller, his stepchildren Carol (Scott) Gilbertson and Fredrick Garlinghouse, three step-grandchildren, three step-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery in Hermantown. Memorials to ALS Society appreciated.

Donald M. Seguin
Donald M. Seguin of Proctor died Sat., Dec. 13, 2003, at home after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 72.

He was born in Duluth in 1931, to Alexander 'Shell' and Anna Seguin. Donald had attended the former St. Clement's Catholic School. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He married Catherine Skrypek in Duluth in 1957. Donald was a welder and layout man who was Shop Foreman at Mesaba Iron Works from 1953 to 1981. He later worked at Marine Iron from 1981-1991 and retired from Miller Hill Steel in 1992. He was a member of the St. Rose Catholic Church and Boilermakers Local 647. Donald was also active in the Proctor Little League and had served as its president.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister June Curtis, and daughter Debra Kurtz.

He is survived by his wife of 46 years Catherine, daughters Tamera 'Tammy' (Rick) Andrews of Proctor, Lisa (Mark) Francisco of Duluth and Cynthia Seguin of Proctor, sons Dan (Laurie) of Proctor, Donald Jr. (Kaye) stationed at Brooks City-Base in Texas, sister Norma (Henry) Tillman of Esko, Carol (Jim) Sasse of Duluth, Bonnie (Mike) Hatfield of Brimson, 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was at Calvary Cemetery. Military honors were accorded by the Combined Duluth Honor Guard.

Clifford E. Davis
Area residents are mourning the loss of their father Clifford E. Davis of Hermantown. He died Sat., Dec. 6, 2003, in St. Luke's Hospital. He was 85.

He was born in Mahtowa, Minn. on July 18, 1918, to Clarence and Emma (Horn) Davis. He grew up in the Caribou Lake and Pike Lake areas. Clifford was a WW II veteran, serving with Co. B 304th Regiment in Central Europe. He was wounded and received the Purple Heart. He worked for Duluth Brewing and Malting Co., and was a self-employed milk hauler and worked for Arrowhead Creameries as a truck driver until his retirement in 1980.Survivors include his wife of 64 years Laura, daughters Darlene (Joe Krenik) Koski and Bette (the late J.D.) Grussendorf of Hermantown, Marie Goff of Neb., Susanne (Chester) Soderburg of Isanti, Bonnie (Alan) Ethun of Mass., Kathleen (Craig) Jones of Pike Lake, Barbara (Russell) Brown of Wis. and Laura (Glen) Johnson of Proctor, sons Clifford, Richard (Carol) and Randy of Hermantown, Robert (Debby) of Duluth and Dennis of Brooklyn Park, 28 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park, Military Honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Roger K. Jackson
Tammy Vittorio of Munger is mourning the death of her father Roger K. Jackson of Duluth. He died Sun., Dec. 7, 2003, in a Duluth hospital at the age of 74.

He was born in Duluth. He grew up in the West End. For a short time, he worked on the Great Lakes before serving in the Army in the Korean War from 1951-1953. Roger worked as an auto upholsterer for over 35 years, eventually owning and operating Brigham's Upholstery.

He is also survived by his wife of almost 50 years Carol, two other daughters, five grandchildren, and a sister.

Tim S. Bakk
Sen. Tom Bakk is mourning the death of his brother Tim S. Bakk. The Cook resident died Sat., Dec. 13, 2003, in Duluth. He was 42.

He is survived by his parents, Melvin and Audrey of Cook and a sister, nieces and nephews.

A service will be held Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Cook. Interment will be in the Cook Community Cemetery.

Jackie T. Hanson
Services were held last week in Augustana Lutheran Church for Jackie T. Hanson. The lifelong area resident died unexpectedly Tues., Dec. 16, 2003, in his Hillsdale Road home. He was 68.

He was born on Sept. 13, 1935, in Duluth to Chris and Sarah (Rainey) Hanson. He had been a railroad employee for over 40 years, the last 30 with the Duluth Winnipeg and Pacific Railway as a machinist, until retirement. He was a 1955 graduate of Proctor High School, and was a U.S. Army peacetime veteran. He had attended missile training school for the U.S. Army in Texas. Jackie married Doris E. Moen in 1958 in Munger. He was a member of Augustana Lutheran Church and had been a strong union member for 40 years. He was a gifted carpenter and machinist, having built eight homes during his lifetime.

Jackie was preceded in death by his parents, a son Guy Hanson, his sisters Vi Stebner and Gloria Guptill, and brothers, Chris and Orville Hanson.

Survivors include his wife Doris, children Wendell of Bowman Lake, Debbie (Thomas) Stegall of Milwaukee and Thomas of Superior, sisters Betty (Art) Taylor of Hermantown and Sandy (John) Kiminki of Proctor, five grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and his best pal Woofers.

Burial was in Augustana Lutheran Cemetery. Military honors were accorded by the Cloquet Honor Guard.

Lorayne Hietalati
Services were held for Lorayne Hietalati of Solway. She died Fri., Dec. 12, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. She was 72.

Lorayne was born in Kettle River. She graduated from Cloquet High School in 1948. She was a member of Elim Lutheran Church and Birthday Club. She enjoyed bird watching, gardening, craft projects and sewing.

She is survived by her husband of 30 years Nick, children Michael Cardinal, Thomas Cardinal, Debbie (Jim) VanGuilder, and Paul (Tammy Brickley) Cardinal, three stepchildren, a sister, eight grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren, one great- grandchild, ten stepgreat-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and her dog Beauty.

Interment was in Pine River Cemetery in Cloquet.
