Ruth E. Campbell
Ruth E. Campbell, who was born and raised in Proctor, died, Fri., Dec. 12, 2003, at her Duluth residence. She was 85.

Ruth was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She served with the Federal Bureau of Investigation for 12 years from 1939 to 1951.

She is survived by her four children, eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a sister, and a brother.

At the family's request, there will be no services held.

Walter G. Mattson
A memorial service was held earlier this week for Walter G. Mattson of Twig. He passed away Fri., Dec. 26. 2003, at a Duluth hospital. He was 88.

Walter was born Nov. 6, 1915, in New York Mills. He served in the 884th Field Artillery Battalion and was stationed in Europe during WW II. He was a valued and dedicated employee at Walker Jamar Company where he was a sheet metal mechanic and drafts-man/designer for 47 years. Walter was a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church in Pike Lake.

Survivors include his wife Mary, children Diane (Lew) Viray, Andrea (Steve) Reclusado, James (Laurie) Mattson and Wendy Mattson (Jay Dendy), six grandchildren, and two sisters.

Nina Mae Lamkin
Former Proctor resident, Nina Mae 'Toots' Lamkin, died Sat., Jan. 3, 2004, in Mankato. She was 87.

She had been a resident of Mapleton Community Home for the last 5-1/2 years. She previously lived in Proctor where she raised her family. Toots was born on Dec. 2, 1916, in Duluth and had attended Denfeld High School. She was a hard working mother who also did private nursing duty in the Duluth area for several years. Toots was a life member of Proctor Moose 1302 and member of Calvary Baptist Church, Duluth.

She was preceded in death by her husband Virgil, daughter Barbara Hagy; and brother Kenneth Erickson.

She is survived by daughters, Karen Alexander of Ariz., Judy (Dennis) Partika of Mapleton, Minn., sons, Bill (Faith) of Chaska Minn., John of Superior, Wis. and Michael (Susan) of Janesville, Minn., 12 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren.

The funeral service was Tuesday. Burial was at Oneota Cemetery.

Richard Frederick Thompson
Richard Frederick Thompson, who grew up in Twig and was a lifelong area resident, died unexpectedly on Tues., Dec. 30, 2003, in his Proctor home. He was 77.

He was born in Duluth. Richard received his GED while in the service and received his diploma in a special ceremony with several other World War II veterans from Proctor High School in 2000. He married Marjorie Summers on September 17, 1949, in Duluth. Richard worked as an electrician for the DM&IR Railroad for 37 years, retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Electrical Union and the Electrician Retirees Breakfast Club. He was an Army veteran serving during World War II. Richard was a jack of all trades and could fix anything. He obtained his pilot's license when he was 50 and enjoyed taking family and friends for rides. He was a member of the EAA, AOPA, and participated in the Young Eagles Flying Club, where he flew more than 50 kids. He was also a longtime member of MENSA. Richard enjoyed entertaining with his guitar, hunting, fishing, telling stories and jokes, and spending time with his family.

Richard was preceded in death by his sister Marie Carlson, brother Kenneth Thompson, and half-brother William Thompson.

He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Marjorie of Proctor, children Nancy (Tom) Cich of Willow River, Gary (Becky) of Saginaw, David of Wis., Debbie Thompson of Hayward, Wis., Cheryl (Pete) Wirtanen of Saginaw, and Brian of Duluth, sister Betty Hutchinson of Duluth, half-sister Ethel Towley of Elk River, 12 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Private family graveside services were held in Oneota Cemetery in Duluth.

Martha K. Kent
Charlie Koncal of Proctor is saddened by the death of his sister, Martha K. Kent. She died Tues., Dec. 30, 2003, at McCarthy Manor at the age of 85.

Martha was born in Cromwell and was a homemaker and also worked at the dietary department at Lake Haven Manor for six years.

She is survived by her six children, two stepdaughters, a sister, 19 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild.

Burial was in Forest Hill Cemetery, Cromwell, Minn.

Virginia M. Newgren
Virginia M. Newgren died Sat., Jan. 3, 2004, at her son's residence in Saginaw, Minn. The Hoyt Lakes resident was 71.

She was born Dec. 20, 1932, in Duluth and attended school in Proctor. She married William Newgren in Duluth. In December of 1957 they moved to Hoyt Lakes, where Virginia was a homemaker and member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Women.

She is preceded in death by her parents; husband William in 2001, sister Ruth Utsch, and brothers Kenneth and Leonard.

She is survived by her sons Dennis (Judy) of Colleyville, Texas, William Jr. (Kim) of Lakeville, Minn. and Randy (Christine) Newgren of Saginaw, Minn., sisters Joyce Laakonen and Dorothy Johnson, both of Duluth and Gladys Johnson of Calif., ten grandchildren, Joe, Jon, Becky, Katie, Emily, Tessa, Brandon, Brooke, Kirstie and James.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery in Duluth.

Stella Marion Marchand
Services were held last week for Stella Marion Marchand. She died Mon., Dec. 29, 2003, in a Duluth hospital. She was 71.

She was born in Duluth. She lived in Payne, Minn., until moving to Duluth in 1941. She married Robert Marchand on Oct. 2, 1948, in Duluth. She had worked at several local restaurants and at Duluth Avionics. She was a member of the Proctor Moose Lodge and the former St. Jean's Catholic Church.

She is survived by Denise (Dennis) LeMay of Saginaw, Dianne (Anthony) Dillon of Pike Lake and three other daughters, three sons, 27 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, a sister and several nieces and nephews.

Walter H. Dodge
Walter H. Dodge, who lived in Munger in his early years, died Sat., Jan. 10, 2004, at his residence in Superior. He was 80.

Walt was born on Park Point. He retired as a member of the Duluth News-Tribune staff after 40 years working as a clerk and district manager in the circulation department, and later as a reporter, city editor and copy editor in the news department. He retired in 1987. He attended Duluth Central High School and UMD and its predecessors, Duluth State College and Duluth State Teachers College. As a member of the Duluth Naval Reserve Unit, he was aboard the Augusta in the summer of 1941 when it carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt to the Atlantic Charter Conference with Prime Minister Winston Churchill at Argentina Bay, Newfoundland.

Survivors include his wife Ann Marie, four stepsons, two stepdaughters, two brothers, a sister, 20 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.

At his request, there was no public visitation or service.

Joan Margaret Bennett
Joan Margaret Bennett, who married Charles Bennett in Calcutta when he was to be shipped home as the war ended, died Tues., Jan. 6, 2004, at her home in Fort Myers, Fla. She was 81.

Joan was born in Rangoon, Burma. Her father, Bertram Minus, was a British Customs agent. During World War II she worked in Calcutta, India. Joan and Charles married on Dec. 29, 1945, and together they returned to his home town of Proctor. They lived in Duluth for 35 years, where they raised their family. They spent many summers at their lake home on Aerie Lake. After Charlie retired from the Minnesota Air National Guard, Joan and Charlie moved south to Fort Myers, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Charles on Feb. 2, 1981, and her brother Victor Minus of Sydney, Australia.

She is survived by her children Thomas (Kathy) Bennett of Great Falls, Va., Debra (Tim) Cossalter of Esko, and Kim (Joanne) Bennett of Duluth; grandchildren Kimberly Page, Douglas and Brad Bennett, Wade and Spencer Cossalter, Abbi and Leah Bennett, Kristi Thomas, and Michael Doxon; and great-grandchildren Ryan, Connor and Molly Page, and Tina and Tiffany Thomas.

Funeral service was held Saturday in St. Paul's Episcopal Church.

Helen Vedo Foss
Helen Vedo Foss, formerly of Grand Lake, died Jan. 10, 2004, in Lakeshore Lutheran Home. She was 92.

In 1999, Helen and her husband of 63 years, Gunnard, moved from their Grand Lake retirement home to Mt. Royal Pine's III. She was born in Duluth. To help support her family during the Great Depression, she left high school in her sophomore year to work at Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator. She also worked at UMD as a cafeteria cashier for many years.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Gudrun (Ed) Geslin, Marge (Buford) Morris, brothers Iver, Nels and Ben Vedo, and her parents.

She is survived by her husband Gunnard A. Foss of Mt. Royal Pines III, daughters Lynda (Jack) Culley of Superior, Peggy (Rex) Dollinger of Bayfield, Wis., her son Jack (Madeline) Foss of Wayzata, Minn., granddaughter Cindy (Brad) McDonnell, grandsons Erik (Paula) Scott and Matthew Dollinger, great-granddaughters Emily and Marit Scott, Helen and Hanna McDonnell, and many beloved nieces, nephews and friends.

Burial is in Oneota Cemetery.

Isaac Gordon Hupona Watterson
Services were held earlier this week for Isaac Gordon Hupona Watterson. He died Thurs., Jan. 8, 2004, in Redwood Falls, Minn., from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle accident. He was 16.

He was born in Duluth and attended area schools through the 9th grade, and then moved to Redwood Falls, Minn.

He is survived by his mother Gail Watterson of Proctor, father Charles 'Chip' Watterson of Redwood Falls, Minn., brother Levi of Proctor, grandparents Lydia Conito of Morton, Minn., and Rev. Alan and Beatrice Kitto of Proctor.

Services were held in Morton, Minn.
