Ernest Olson
Ernest H. Olson, age 88, a resident of Swanville, MN, died December 17, 1998, at the Long Prairie Memorial Nursing Home. Funeral services were held December 21 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville with Rev. John O. Grein officiating. Burial was in St. Peter’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Ernest was born July 11, 1910, in St. Louis Park, MN, to the late Hans and Martha (Nielson) Olson. In 1917, the family moved to Swanville Township. Ernest grew up in Swanville Township and graduated from the Swanville High School in 1928. He then worked in the produce department at the Swanville Creamery. Ernest was united in marriage to Clara D. Vanselow on June 21, 1941, in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Swanville. In 1952, Ernie purchased the Swanville Conoco Gas station and operated it until retiring in 1975. He was a substitute postal carrier and also a school bus driver in the Swanville area for many years. Ernie enjoyed baseball. He played baseball in high school and later played for, and coached, the Swanville Legion team and the city team for over 30 years. He also enjoyed making bird houses, hunting and fishing. Ernest was a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church and sang in the choir for 54 years. He was a charter member of the Swanville Lions Club where he served as club president and also a member of the Swanville Sportsmen’s Club.

Survivors include his son, Bruce Olson and wife Janet of Swanville; daughter, Kathy Davide and husband Bob of Valley City, ND; sister, Mrs. Helen Nelson of Swanville; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Ernie was preceded in death by his wife, Clara; parents; brothers, Edward and Irvin Olson and a sister, Mrs. Fredrick (Gertrude) Nelson.

Honorary pallbearers were Teri Iverson, Angie Olson, Jordan Olson, Ethan Davide and Brenda Davide. Pallbearers were Brad Olson, Chris Olson, Aaron Olson, Joe Olson, Mitch Davide and David Iverson.

Grace Goebel
Grace Goebel, age 81, a resident of Minneapolis, MN, formerly of Little Falls, MN, died December 18, 1998, at her residence in Minneapolis.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held December 21 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Harold Kost officiating. Burial was in Holy Family parish cemetery.

Grace was born July 1, 1917, to Ralph and Mary (Horgesheimer) Draggoo in Nesson, ND. She lived most of her youth in North Dakota. Grace was united in marriage to Donald Baker in 1940. The couple made their home in Minot, ND, and started their family with son, David. After Donald’s death, Grace married Matthias Goebel in 1947 in Detroit, MI. They resided in Detroit until the family moved to Little Falls in 1965. Grace was a former resident of Pine Grove Manor and finally moved to Minneapolis. She enjoyed baking, pets, gardening and her soap operas.

Survivors include daughter, Elizabeth Lauer and husband Robert of Columbia Heights, MN; sons, Thomas Goebel and wife Murial of Little Falls, Charles Goebel and wife Cynthia of Little Falls, Daniel Goebel and wife Kay of Oak Grove, MN, and Carl Goebel and wife Cynthia of Forest Lake, MN; sisters, Edna Goebel of Eagle Pass, TX, and Betty Schwarzhoff of Galesville, WI; brother, Wilbur Draggoo of Detroit, MI; 26 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Donald Baker; husband Matthias Goebel; son, David; one grandson, Andrew Goebel and brother, Ted.

Casketbearers were her grandchildren.

Irene A. Nordstrom
Irene A. Nordstrom, age 86, a resident of Red Wing, MN, died December 22, 1998, at Fairview Red Wing Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial was held December 26 at the Church of St. Joseph with Father Thomas Walker officiating. Burial was in the Calvary Cemetery in Red Wing.

Irene was born December 9, 1912, in Randall, MN, the daughter of Frederick and Mary (Bentler) Schmidt. She attended schools in Randall. She worked as a storekeeper in Randall and Little Falls. She married Eric Nordstrom November 22, 1947, in Little Falls. They lived in Minneapolis, MN, and she worked at Donaldsons. They moved to Fairmont in 1952. She was a bookkeeper for her husband’s business. They moved to Red Wing in 1965 where she worked at St. Joseph’s School, Red Wing Health Center and Braschler’s Bakery in food service. She moved to Jordan Towers in 1987. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she was a member of the Women’s Guild; she was a member of the VFW Auxiliary; she enjoyed reading, crocheting, cribbage and 500.

Survivors include two daughters, Andrea (Le) Shelton of St. Paul and Dianne (Larry) Madson of Spring Valley, WI; two sons, David (Julianne Freij) Nordstrom of Red Wing and Daniel (Mary) Nordstrom of Plymouth, MN; five grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; one sister, Alice LeDoux of Little Falls, MN; nieces, nephews, other family members. Her husband, Eric Nordstrom, and one brother, Mark Schmidt, preceded her in death.

Margaret Doroff
Margaret Mary Doroff, age 87, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died March 11, 1999, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.

Mass of Christian Burial was held March 15 at Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Nick Landsberger officiating and Father Harold Kost concelebrating. Burial was in St. Mary’s Parish Cemetery.

Margaret was born on June 26, 1911, to the late Amedie and Filinda (Heroux) Doucette in Topeka, Ripley Township, MN. She was united in marriage to Anthony (Tony) Doroff on September 12, 1927, in Holy Family Church in Belle Prairie by Father Henri Pellet. She worked at Munsingwear from 1942 to 1957 as a teacher and supervisor. Margaret loved being with her family. She was an avid card player, and enjoyed gardening, crocheting and traveling. Margaret entered St. Otto’s Care Center in March 1996. She is a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls and a member of St. Mary’s Christian Mothers and past member of St. Francis Xavier Mission Group.

Survivors include her son Duane Doroff and wife Deloris of Roseville, MN; daughters, Betty Loidolt and husband Norman of Little Falls, and FayeAnn Mattie and husband Michael of Bothell, WA; sisters, Lena Holsapple and husband Charles of Brainerd, MN, and Rose Grotjohn of Albany, MN; nine grandchildren, Steve, Mark, Paul, and Mike Doroff; Greg and Cindy Loidolt; Cheryl Prososki, Julie Lang, and Michael Mattie; five great-grandchildren, Sarah and Troy Prososki, Joseph Doroff, Olivia Lang, and Trevor Loidolt.

She was preceded in death by her husband Anthony Doroff on November 3, 1982; her parents Amedie and Filinda Doucette; 10 brothers and two sisters.

Casketbearers were grandsons Steve, Mark, Paul, and Mike Doroff; Greg Loidolt; and Michael Mattie.

Honorary casketbearers were the St. Mary’s Christian Mothers.

Clara Ratka
Clara Ratka, age 89, a resident of rural Rice, MN, died March 13, 1999, at the Country Manor Health Care and Retirement Center in Sartell, MN.

Funeral services were held March 16 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Gilman, MN, with Fr. Raymond Schulzetenberg and Fr. Greg Mastey officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Clara Ratka was born August 3, 1909, in rural Benton County, MN, to Joseph and Sophie (Cmiel) Knapek. She married John Ratka October 25, 1932, at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Gilman. She had lived in rural Rice since 1940 where she had farmed with her husband. She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Gilman, where she was a member of the Christian Mothers. Clara loved to cook, sew, knit, fish, play cards and garden.

Survivors include her husband, John of Sartell; sons and daughters, Janice and Harold Jurek, Brooklyn Park, MN, Jerome and Sharon of Corcoran, MN, Richard and Jutta of Phoenix, AZ, Arlene and Ralph Boeckman of Sartell, Rose Ann and Allen Meyer, Paynesville, MN, Carol and Larry Faber of Rice; 33 grandchildren and 59 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Mary Bilinski, Joseph Knapek, Alex Knapek, Agnes Mastey and Con Knapek.

Pallbearers were Gary Jurek, James Meyer, Jamie Faber, Glenn Ratka, Michael Ratka, and Kenneth Boeckman.

Mike Sellin
Mike Sellin, age 49, a resident of Elk River, MN, died March 14, 1999.

Mass of Christian Burial was March 17 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN, with Father Leroy Kremer officiating.

Mike was born on October 4, 1949, to Verlin and Wilma (Greene) Sellin in Bertha, MN. He graduated from Clarissa High School in 1968. Mike was united in marriage to Cindy Zyvoloski on August 18, 1973, in Long Prairie, MN. He worked as a truck driver his entire life, most recently at Lakeville Motors in Roseville, MN. He was a member of Teamsters Union #120.

Survivors include his wife Cindy Sellin of Elk River; mother Wilma Sellin of Eagle Bend, MN; brothers, Bill Sellin of Eagle Bend, Tom Sellin of Alexandria, MN, and David Sellin of Anoka, MN; sister, Linda Kopp of Elk River and father and mother-in-law Bud and Delores Zyvoloski of Little Falls.

He was preceded in death by his father, Verlin Sellin.

Casketbearers were Marv Solberg, Bert Pfeifer, Darrel Zehrer, Mike Kopp, Dale Underhill and Michael Zyvoloski.

Lloyd ‘Ole’ Olson
Lloyd ‘Ole’ Olson died March 11, 1999, in Onamia, MN, at the age of 74 years.

Memorial services were held March 16 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Onamia with Father William McNiff officiating. Interment followed at the Onamia Area Vets Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the Onamia Vets Club.

Lloyd ‘Ole’ Olson was born July 17, 1924, in Minneapolis, MN, to Joel and Ida (Nyrell) Olson. He grew up in Wahkon, MN and attended school in Wahkon and Isle, MN. He graduated from Isle High School in 1942. After graduation, he served his country in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Ocean during WW II. He was honorably discharged from the service on February 23, 1946. He was a member of the Onamia Vets Club. He married Marliss Smude on October 21, 1948, at the Holy Cross Catholic Church in Onamia. To this union two children were born, David and Connie. He worked for Smude Lumber and Mille Lacs Lumber & Supply for a total of 34 years. He started working for Father Hennepin State Park in 1984, until his retirement in 1992. Ole loved hunting, fishing, and gardening. He also enjoyed having coffee every morning at the Gateway Cafe. He will be missed by his family and and many friends that saw him every day.

Survivors include his wife, Marlissa of Onamia; son, David and wife Shelly of Blaine, MN; daughter, Connie and husband George Willis of Onamia; three grandchildren, Cassie, Lindsey and Tyler; brother, Robert and wife Elaine Olson of Mora, MN; sister, Barbara Olson of Anoka, MN and his cat, Fluffy.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Lorraine.
