Robert Fiero
Robert Elmer Vincent Fiero, age 85, of Royalton, MN, died December 22, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls, MN.

Funeral services were held December 26 at the Brenny - Karlinski Funeral Home in Royalton with Father Tony Kroll officiating. Burial was at the Holy Trinity Catholic Parish Cemetery in Royalton.

Robert was born February 11, 1913, to Howard and Jessie Rose (Blake) Fiero in Forest Hills, NY. He actively worked in New York for such concerns as Bell Telephone Research Laboratory/ U.S. Export Corporation, U.S. Port of Embarkation, and U.S. Department of Agriculture. Robert enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on April 19, 1944, and was honorably discharged May 2, 1946. He served in Paris Island as instructor of infantry weapons until he was assigned to overseas duty in the Pacific. His unit received Presidential Citations from the late President Roosevelt while overseas. After the war, he worked for Fram Corporation as General Traffic Manager and retired at 65 from Fram (Bendix). Robert was united in marriage to Eleanor Margaret Peirce on May 20, 1939. She passed away in 1973. Robert was united in marriage to Cordelia Kroll on August 25, 1973.in Minneapolis, MN. In 1992, they retired in Royalton.

Survivors include wife Cordelia Fiero of Royalton; son Robert Edmund Fiero and wife Elaine of Falls River, MA; brother Howard Fiero of Jamaica, NY; sister Jessie Schultz of Largo, FL; and three grandchildren, Robert Edmund Fiero, Kelly Ann Fiero, and Thomas Howard Fiero, all of NH.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Eleanor and one sister.

Casketbearers were relatives and family.

Richard Pekarek
Richard Frank Pekarek, age 49, a resident of South St. Paul, MN, died December 25, 1998, in South St. Paul.

Funeral services were held December 29 at the Church of St. John Vianney in South St. Paul with Father Martin A. Beckman officiating. Burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Richard was born in Little Falls, MN, on May 6, 1949, to Frank and Rose (Skaja) Pekarek. He married Karen Jean Anderson. He was employed at Long Prairie Packing Company and served in the Army from February 3, 1969, to January 9, 1972.

Survivors include his wife, Karen; daughter, Christiana; a brother, Ernest Pekarek; sisters, Margaret Peppersack, Mary Jane Gapinski, Florence Schrodek, Alice Pedersen, Rose Ann Zablocki, Frances Jorgenson and Evelyn Pekarek and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Theresa Ziwicki and brothers, Norman Pekarek and George Pekarek.

Winifred Rocholl
Winifred G. Rocholl, age 93, a resident of Little Falls, MN, died December 28, 1998, at St. Otto’s Care Center, Little Falls.

Private family services will be held at a later date.

Winifred was born May 24, 1905, in Detroit, MI, to Frederick Clark and Catherine Lorraine (LaLonde) Ward. She married Arnold Rocholl on October 11, 1923, in Detroit. She was a homemaker and bank teller in Detroit. She worked at Comerica. She moved to Onamia, MN, in 1970, and to St. Otto’s Care Center in 1993. She enjoyed classical music, bowling and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her six children and their spouses, Rev. Arndol (Anne) Rocholl, Jr., of Long Prairie, MN, Edith Bunker of Madison, MI, Harold (Joan) Rocholl of Plymouth, MI, Evelyn (Clarence) Nagler of Sterling Heights, MI, Eleanor (Merle) Christie of Royal Oak, MI, and Elsa (Jess) Tenney, Hazel Park, MI; 17 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1987; one sister, Irene Snyder and one brother, Clayton Ward.

Kathleen Gangestad
Kathleen Rose (Perlinger) Gangestad, age 63, a resident of St. Mathias, MN, died December 29, 1998, at the Greater Staples Hospital.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on December 31 at the St. Mathias Catholic Church with Father Henry Miller officiating. Burial followed in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery at Camp Ripley.

Kathleen was born on January 7, 1935, daughter of Andrew and Mary (Wally) Perlinger in Lennox Township. She grew up in St. Mathias and was united in marriage to Leo Gangestad on February 5, 1955. Following their marriage they moved to Zim, MN, on the iron range and in 1971 they moved to Little Falls, MN, where she worked for H&R Block. In 1985 they moved to the Perlinger home place in St. Mathias where she lived with her husband Leo until entering the Staples Care Center Alzheimer’s Unit in March of 1998. Kathleen enjoyed showing off her weedless garden and flowerbed. She enjoyed crocheting lovely doilies, cards, dice and spending time with friends and relatives, she enjoyed her kids, accounting and was a devoted grandmother.

Survivors include her husband, Leo; a son, Dennis (Michele) Gangestad of Little Falls; two daughters, Terry (Robert) Baker of Brainerd, MN, Penny (Steven) Scott of Staples; her parents, Andrew and Mary Perlinger of Brainerd; five sisters, Margaret Lightner of Brainerd, Ann Namyst of Woodbury, MN, Clara Perlinger of St. Paul, MN, Elaine Doucette of Winslow, AZ, and Joan Thesing of St. Mathias; two brothers, Larry Perlinger of Brainerd and Gary Perlinger of Waseca and nine grandchildren.

Casketbearers were Jenny Baker, Susan Lust, Danial Baker, Kelen Gangestad, Christopher Gangestad and Kenten Gangestad. Honorary casketbearers were Bethany and Alexander Gangestad.

Arline Cichon
Arline Cichon, age 70, a resident of Swanville, MN, died February 26, 1999, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN.
Mass of Christian Burial was held March 2 at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, MN, with Father Greg Mastey officiating. Burial was at the St. Edward’s Parish Cemetery.

Arline was born on June 22, 1928, to Harry and Ruby Elizabeth (Jahncke) Molde in Little Falls, MN. Arline was united in marriage to Lawrence Cichon on June 1, 1954, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls. She graduated from Swanville High School in 1946 and then attended beauty school in Minneapolis, MN. She worked as a beauty operator in Detroit Lakes, MN, then worked at the Underwood Typewriter Company in Minneapolis. She moved to Little Falls and worked as an operator for the Northwest-ern Bell Telephone Company from 1951 to 1954. After marrying Lawrence in 1954, they farmed near Swanville. Arline was a member of the Rosary Society and St. Edward’s Catholic Church. She enjoyed quilting.

Survivors include her husband Lawrence Cichon of Swanville; sons Richard Cichon and wife Kristine of Winona, MN and Duane Cichon and wife Debbie of Reno, NV; daughter Cheryl Cichon of Sartell, MN; sister Carmen DeFoe of Sobieski, MN; and granddaughters, Jennifer Maine and Aimee Cichon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and sister Bernadine.

Casketbearers were Jerry Retka, Dennis Retka , Tim DeFoe, Rodney Cichon, Dennis Venske, and John Tschida.

Martha Abitz
Martha Abitz, age 99, a resident of St. Cloud, MN, formerly of Paynesville, MN, died February 27, 1999, at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Private funeral services were held March 2 at the Brenny Funeral Home (West Chapel) in Little Falls, MN, with Reverend John Abitz officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

Martha was born on July 1, 1899, to Ferdinand and Sophie (Schultz) Bauman in Paynesville. As a young person, she worked at “Tuck’s Cafe” in Paynesville. Martha was united in marriage to William Abitz on July 9, 1917, in St. Cloud. She was an inspector at Tony Down’s in St. James, MN. Of her six children, five of them served their country during World War II. Martha also had an antique business.

Survivors include her sons Rev. John Abitz of Fort Worth, TX, and Lowell Abitz of Casper, WY; daughters, Mrs. Robert (Joan) Lindbeck of Dallas, TX and Mrs. Robert (Winnie) Galbraith of Little Falls; 11 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sons; four brothers; and seven sisters.

Anna Frederickson
Anna Fredrickson, age 92, died February 26, 1999, at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale, MN.
Mass of Christian Burial was held March 3 at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus, MN, with Father Silverius Schmitt officiating and Deacon Jerry Roth assisting. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Anna was born on May 23, 1906, to Albert and Frances Antnowski in LeCenter, MN. She was a beautician for Field and Slick in St. Paul for many years. She went into service during World War II as a driver for the general staff. Anna was united in marriage to Captain Carl Frederickson during World War II. After service, she went back to being a beautician in many communities. Anna was a past commander of the American Legion Auxiliary in San Pedro, CA. In 1993, she moved back to Little Falls to the Alverna Apartments and then retired to St. Therese Nursing Home in New Hope, MN.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen Phillips and husband Michael of Maple Grove, MN; brothers George Zierden of Denver, CO, Donald Smith of Aberdeen, WA, and Sylvester Doroff of Long Prairie, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl; sister Lucille Ohotta, and two other sisters.

Casketbearers were Michael Phillips, Maryrose Capko, Don Zierdon, Lorraine Doroff, John Waletski, and Kent Roth.

Elizabeth Gessell
Elizabeth “Granny” J. Gessell, age 92, a resident of Swanville, MN, died February 12, 1999, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls, MN. Funeral services were held February 15 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville with Father Thomas Meyer officiating. Interment was in the parish cemetery.
Elizabeth was born March 17, 1906, in St. Anna, MN, to the late Michael and Elizabeth “Louise” (Lette) Birchem. She grew up in St. Anna, Big Lake, MN, and Elk River, MN. She was united in marriage to Joseph Gessell on January 20, 1925, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville. The couple made their home in Swanville where they owned and operated Gessell feed Mill. Granny worked in the office at the feed mill from the late 1920s to the late 1950s when she and her husband retired. Following their retirement, the couple continued living in Swanville. Joseph died November 30, 1979. Granny enjoyed quilting, crocheting, baking, playing cards, fishing and restoring antiques. She was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Swanville, the Christian Mothers and the St. Elizabeth Mission Group.

Survivors include her sons, Richard Gessell and wife Lucille of Swanville, John Gessell and wife Marge of Swanville, Frank Gessell and wife Helen of Swanville and Joseph Gessell and wife Shirley of Swanville; daughter-in-law, Noreen Gessell of Swanville; 24 grandchildren; 65 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joseph Gessell; son, Donald Gessell and brothers, Joseph and Victor Birchem.

Honorary pallbearers were Mark Gessell and Granny’s granddaughters.

Active casketbearers were Robert, David, Steve, Lyle, John, Jr., and Brent Gessell.

Chad Gessell gave the eulogy and was the lector.
