Colette Marie Kalis
Colette Marie Kalis, age 38, a resident of St. Cloud, MN, formerly of Little Falls, MN, died December 3, 1998, at the Country Manor Nursing Home in Sartell, MN, from complications with diabetes.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held December 8 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls with the Rev. Leroy Kremer officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.

Colette M. Kalis was born December 5, 1959, in Little Falls, Morrison County, MN, to Leo and Lorraine (Zoren) Kalis. She grew up in Little Falls, attending Lincoln Elementary School, Little Falls Middle School and graduating from Little Falls High School with the Class of 1978. After high school she worked at the Oak Terrace Nursing Home in Minnetonka, MN. In 1985 she returned to school, attending a secretarial course at St. Cloud Vo-Tech College. Colette became employed with the Fingerhut Corporation in St. Cloud where she worked as a dispatcher. On March 2, 1998, she suffered a brain stem aneurysm. After a courageous nine-month fight, Colette passed away. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Little Falls and was an advocate for Diabetes Research.

Survivors include her parents, Leo and Lorraine Kalis of Little Falls; brothers, James Kalis and wife, Dianne of Little Falls, Alan and friend, Vanessa Morehouse of Cushing, MN, LeRoy of Shakopee, MN, Jonathan of Little Falls; sister, Janet Burggraff and husband, Kevin of Pierz, MN; nephews, Nicholas and Joshua Burggraff and Justin, Kyle and Logan Kalis; grandmothers, Josephine Kalis and Sadie Zoren, both of Little Falls.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Annette Kalis on April 4, 1993, and grandfathers, Alex Kalis and Joseph Zorens.

Honorary pallbearers were friends and co-workers from Fingerhut. Casketbearers were Justin, LeRoy, Allan, James and Jonathan Kalis and Kevin Burggraff.

Robert Johnson
Robert Leslie Johnson, age 80, died November 26, 1998, at the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud, MN.

Services were held December 11 at the chapel at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery with military rites conducted by DAV Chapter 12.

Robert was born in Walker, MN, to Elam and Anna (Oliver) Johnson. He married Ruth Ellen Whitmore on October 7, 1939. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty from 1936-39, 1943-46 and 1957-71, as well as active reserves from 1946-57, accumulating 31 years of total military service. In civilian life he worked primarily as a printer with the Cass County Pioneer, Walker, and Suburban Newspapers, Hopkins, MN. In the military he was most notably a printer with Stars and Stripes in Europe and Japan, as well as an all around rifle, pistol and shotgun marksman, finishing in the President’s Hundred top one hundred rifle marksmen in the US in 1957 at Camp Perry, OH. He moved to Little Falls in 1974, where he achieved an AA Degree from Brainerd Community College, graduated from Brainerd Vocational-Technical Small Engine Repair School in 1978, and operated Bob’s Small Engine Repair in Little Falls for many years. He fought through heart surgeries in 1984 and 1988, then was finally forced to retire and subsequently moved to Spokane, WA. In 1993 he survived yet another heart surgery and moved back to Little Falls. He was proud of his voluntary activities, including driving for disabled persons and shut-ins, and especially taking is dog to area nursing homes to cheer the residents. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church, a life member of the National Rifle Association, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife; son, Roy of Little Falls; daughter, Ellen Liddell of Hastings, NE; brothers, Harold of Spokane, WA, Donald of Brooklyn Park, MN, and Leo of Maple Grove, MN; sisters, Evelyn Johnson of Annville, PA, Doris of Bemidji, MN, Vera Moos of Pennington, MN; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Elam, Wilhelm, Earnest, Marvin and Martin and sisters, Adeline and Alma.

Shirlee Heins
Shirlee Mae Heins, age 70, a resident of Upsala, MN, died May 4, 1999, at her home.
Funeral services were held May 8 at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Upsala with Rev. Leland Johnson officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.

Shirlee was born November 20, 1928, in Chicago, IL, to the late Francis and Nellie (Luhtala) Johnson. The family came to live in Upsala where Shirlee attended school, graduating from the Upsala High School in 1946. Shirlee was united in marriage to James G. Heins on March 20, 1948, at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. The couple resided in Birmingham, AL, for 17 years. Shirlee graduated from Bessemer Technical College in Bessemer, AL, as a licensed practical nurse in 1979. She worked at the Birmington Eye Foundation Hospital and the Gardendale Alabama Nursing Home until retiring to Upsala in 1989. Mrs. Heins was a member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Upsala.

Survivors include husband, James G. Heins; son, Bruce Heins and wife Anne of Sugar Land, TX; daughters, Marsha Frommer and husband John of Rockton, IL, Sharon Hudson and husband Greg of Mt. Olive, AL, and Janice Buroughs and husband Tommy of Birmingham; grandchildren, Matthew Heins, Meredith and Andrew Frommer and Abraham and Ezra Hudson; stepbrother, Bill Osberg of Upsala; aunt, Mayme Johnson of Alexandria, MN; eight brothers-in-law, eight sisters-in-law and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Nellie in 1944; stepmother, Anna in 1982; father, Francis in 1988 and many aunts and uncles.

Honorary casketbearers were Marlee Holmen, Marlys Juhnke, Lorraine Johnson, Esther Lillestrand, Lorna Koehn, Nancy Peterson and Elsie Nelson.

Pallbearers were Dale, John, Paul, Ron and Russell Heins and Alan Bistodeau.

H. Bertille Kucera
H. Bertille Kucera of Walnut Lake Township, MN, passed away April 29, 1999, in New Brighton, MN, at the age of 69.
Funeral services were held May 3 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Faribault, MN, with the Reverend Richard Jeub as celebrant. Interment was at the St. Lawrence Cemetery in Faribault.

H. Bertille Kucera was born April 4, 1930, to Edward and Hazel (Dumbeck) Schmidt in Walnut Lake Township, Faribault County. She graduated from Little Falls High School in 1948. She married George Kureca May 2, 1952, in Harding, MN, at Holy Cross Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, two nieces and two nephews. She spent most of her married life by Faribault. She did childcare for many children. She enjoyed them all until she went blind.

Survivors include her husband in Faribault; two daughters, Georgene in Blaine, MN, and Theresa in Faribault; two grandsons, Alexander and Mathew in Blaine; sisters Julia Zyvoloski and Edes Gerwing of Little Falls, MN; brothers Delbert Schmidt of Roseville, MN, Delwin Schmidt of St. Paul, MN, Avit Schmidt of Pierz, MN; and Roger Schmidt of Eagan, MN.

Casketbearers were Dan Schmidt, Stephen Zyvoloski, Brian Andrist, Dave Schmidt, Bill Springer and Arnie Gillispie.

Alvera Schandel
Alvera E. Schandel, age 74, a resident of Little Falls, MN, formerly of Grey Eagle, MN, died May 7, 1999, at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls.
Services were held May 10 at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle with the Rev. John Grein officiating. Burial followed in Lakeview Cemetery, Grey Eagle.

Alvera was born May 5, 1925, in Round Prairie Township, Todd County, MN, to John F. and Amanda (Farber) Zellmann. She married Arthur Schandel on May 22, 1946, in Grey Eagle and they farmed near Moose Lake by Swanville, MN, and then moved to West Fargo, ND where they owned and operated West Fargo Concrete Products. After Arthur’s death on December 13, 1976, Alvera resided near Grey Eagle for a few years and had been at St. Otto’s Care Center in Little Falls since November 1987.

Survivors include brother and sisters, Ervin Zellmann of Grey Eagle, Janet Sufka and husband Ray of Grey Eagle and Marlene Birkholz and her husband Leonard of Blaine, MN.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur on December 13, 1976; brothers and sisters, Eugene and John Zellmann and Lois and June Decker.

Casketbearers were Charles and Kyle Birkholz, Steve Holm, Ricky and Paul Weir and Robert Feierabend.

Florence Carter-Larson
Florence B. Carter-Larson, died February 22, 1999.
A Memorial Service will be held May 22 at 2 p.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church in Cushing, MN. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society.

Florence is survived by daughter Marcy (Jerry) Otto, and son, Dave (Linda) Carter; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and, two brothers.

John Zellmann
John L. Zellmann, age 72, a resident of Grey Eagle, MN, died April 28, 1999, at his farm near Grey Eagle.

Funeral services were held May 3 at Saint John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grey Eagle. Burial followed in the Lakeview Cemetery. Military honors were provided by the Grey Eagle American Legion.

John was born November 12, 1926, in Round Prairie, MN, to John F. and Amanda (Farber) Zellmann. He was united in marriage to Marilyn Decker on August 10, 1958, in Swanville, MN. Marilyn died November 3, 1985, and John married Josephine Penrod on June 14, 1998. He farmed near Grey Eagle his whole life and was a member of Saint John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Grey Eagle American Legion and was a life-member of VFW Post 1825 in Belgrade, MN. John loved to fish, garden and socialize with his friends. He always took kids under his wing and tried to show them the right way to live.

Survivors include his children, Charlene Gombrich and husband Scott of Long Beach, CA, and Allen Zellmann of Grey Eagle; brother and sisters, Ervin Zellmann of Grey Eagle, Alvera Schandel of Little Falls, MN, Janet Sufka and husband Ray of Grey Eagle and Marlene Birkholz and husband Leonard of Blaine, MN, and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Marilyn; second wife, Josephine, who died on December 4, 1998; daughters, Synthia Mapstone and Connie Zellmann and sons, Michael and Arnold; brother, Eugene Zellmann and sisters, Lois Weir and June Decker.

Casketbearers were Kevin, Darryl and Josh Bitz, Paul and Rick Weir and Bud Rohde.

Shirley Nielsen
Shirley Nielsen, age 74, a resident of Sauk Rapids, MN, died April 29, 1999 at her home.

Services were held May 3 at Atonement Lutheran Church in St. Cloud, MN, with the Rev. Gerald Staehling officiating. Burial was in Graham United Methodist Cemetery, Rice, MN.

Shirley was born August 22, 1924, in Burtrum, MN, to Hobart and Blanche (Berg) Wildman. She married Daniel Nielsen on Marcy 23, 1947, in Burtrum. She lived in Burtrum until moving to Sauk Rapids in 1960. She worked many years as a waitress at Joyce’s Cafe and many other restaurants, retiring in 1987. She was a member of Atonement Lutheran Church and Atonement Church Circle. She was a volunteer at Shepherd Oaks Apartments and Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Sauk Rapids.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Daniel and Cindy Nielson of Rice; brothers and sister, Gerald Wildman of Glenwood, MN, Marlys Frank of New Brighton, MN, and Dale Wildman of Maple Grove, MN, and grandchildren, Peter, Shannon and Jacob Nielsen.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Daniel, on September 8, 1997.
