Robert Heroux
Robert Allen Heroux, age 58, a resident of Oak Park, MN, died April 29, 1999, at his home in Oak Park, Benton County, just east of Foley, MN.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held May 3 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Little Falls, MN, with the Rev. Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls. Military rites were conducted by Little Falls VFW Post 1112 and Little Falls American Legion Post 46.

Robert was born January 14, 1941, in Little Falls, Morrison County, to the late Louis P. and Gladys A. (Cash) Heroux. He grew up in Little Falls, attending St. Mary’s Catholic School and graduating from Little Falls High School. On August 6, 1958, he entered the United States Army and received an honorable discharge on May 17, 1961. During his military years, he served in the occupational forces in West Berlin, Germany. Following his service years, he attended St. Cloud State University. Robert was a former employee of Larson Boats in Little Falls, Minnesota Power and Light in Little Falls, Bauerly Bros. Construction in St. Cloud, MN, and was presently employed as a construction supervisor with Hardrives of St. Cloud. He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Foreston, MN, Little Falls VFW Post 1112 and Little Falls American Legion Post 46. He enjoyed cars and woodworking.

Survivors include his son, Nicholas (Nick) at home; brother, George and wife Cordy of Cushing, MN; sisters, Joyce Olson of Little Falls, Shirley Gessell and husband Joe of Swanville, MN, and Mary Lentz and husband Richard of Onamia, MN; many nieces and nephews and grandnieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister, Beverly.

Casketbearers were Sharon, Steve, Scott and Robert Olson, Jessica Gessell and Jason and Michelle Lentz.

C. Howard Dahlgren
C. Howard Dahlgren, age 79, a resident of Onamia, MN, died April 30, 1999, at his home.

Funeral services were held at Bethany Lutheran Church in Onamia on May 4 with Rev. Richard Fitzer officiating. Burial was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Onamia.

C. Howard was born March 15, 1920, in Onamia to the late Charles and Thelma Dahlgren. He grew up and attended school in Onamia, graduating in 1937. Howard opened and operated Dahlgren Brothers Store in Onamia with his brother, Wesley Dahlgren. On July 28, 1958, Howard was united in marriage to Charleen Nordmark at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Elroy, WI. The couple had made their home in Onamia for the past 41 years. Howard served Onamia as mayor, city council member, rotary member and planning and zoning committee member. Howard enjoyed sports, especially “Twins” baseball games, traveling, reading the daily newspaper and planting and tending to his dahlias.

Survivors include his wife, Charleen of Onamia; daughters, Susan Roe and husband Loren of Grey Eagle, MN, Alice Tylutki and husband Tom of Austin, MN, and Karen McKenzie and husband Bob of Sacramento, CA; sister, Elaine Schuessler of New Brighton, MN, brother, Wesley Dahlgren of Onamia; six grandchildren and two nieces and two nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Thelma Dahlgren.

Donald Powell
Donald D. Powell, age 75, a resident of rural Little Falls, MN, died April 24, 1999, at his home.

Funeral services were held April 29 at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls, with Rev. Loren Olson of First United Church in Little Falls officiating. Interment was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley, MN.

Donald was born July 1, 1923, in Craigville, Koochiching County, MN, to the late Wilbur and Macy (Mohn) Powell. Donald was in the U.S. Army with the occupation forces in South Korea and Japan in World War II. Following the war, he returned to northern Minnesota and drove truck on the logging roads. In 1948, he met Edna Shaw in International Falls, MN. They were united in marriage on November 25, 1950, and began their family in 1951. Donald continued truckdriving into the late 1960s. In the 1970s, he lived and worked in Minneapolis, MN, moving to Little Falls in 1979. Donald could repair just about anything related to mechanical work on vehicles.

Survivors include his wife, Edna Powell of Little Falls; sons, Donald D. Powell and companion Joyce Held of Little Falls, and Russell W. Powell and companion Stacy Storkamp of Swanville, MN; daughters, Deborah M. Brown and husband John, Sr., of Elk River, MN, Cheryl M. Nelson of Little Falls and Ruth A. Powell and companion Pat Poegel of Long Prairie, MN; brothers, Wilbur D. Powell and wife Nancy of Northome, MN, Albert Powell and wife Kate of Roseburg, OR, Frank Powell and wife Sylvia of Glasgow, MT, and John Powell of Eugene, OR; sisters, Bea Douglas and husband Dewey of Big Fork, MN, and Gladys Wise of Ft. Wayne, IN; brothers-in-law, Reuben White and wife Peggy of International Falls and Gary White and wife Betty of Chaska, MN; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilbur and Macy (Mohn) Powell; son, Robert C. Powell; daughter, Kathryn C. Powell; brothers, Sylvester “Bob” Powell and Leslie Powell and sisters, Mary Burr, Zella Thomas and Muriel Schultz.

Pallbearers were Jack Woodbridge, Ray Nelson, Jr., Ray Nelson, Sr., Dan Steiger, Jerry Nauber and Billy Gibson.

Mayme Jenkins
Mayme Margaret Jenkins, age 83, a resident of Staples,MN, died May 3, 1999, at the Greater Staples Care Center.

A memorial service was held May 7 at the United Methodist Church in Staples with Reverend Daniel Almquist and Reverend Gordon Jensen officiating. Burial followed at the Evergreen Hill Cemetery.

Mayme was born in Estherville, IA, February 10, 1916, to David and Anna (Swift) Hunter. As a child, her family moved into the Motley, MN, area where she grew up and attended school. She graduated from Motley High School and then attended Normal Teachers Training School in Staples, graduating in 1935. She taught school in Cass County and at a rural school near Wadena, MN. On January 1, 1938, Mayme married Leslie Jenkins of rural Staples. They spent their entire lives in the Staples-Motley area. She did substitute teaching after her family grew up. She was PTA president and active in her women’s group at the United Methodist Church in Staples throughout the years.

Survivors include a daughter, Rita (Gordon) Jensen of Maple Grove, MN; two sons, Roger Jenkins of Anchorage, AK, and Russell Jenkins of Staples; two sisters, Gladys Beers of Brainerd, MN, and Adeline Peterson of Motley; two sisters-in-law, Mae Jenkins of Staples and Pat Jenkins-Hombeck of San Diego, CA; grandchildren, Kenneth Jensen, Karen Jensen-Olson, David Jenkins and Aimee Jenkins; three great-grandchildren, George Olson, Samuel Olson and Ashley Jenkins and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie; a sister, Agnes Martin and brothers-in-law, George Peterson, Harry Beers, Darrel Jenkins and LeRoy Jenkins.

Elmira Susalski
Elmira Susalski, age 77, a resident of Brainerd, MN, died January 26,1999, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Brainerd.

Mass of Christian Burial was January 29 at Holy Family Catholic Church in Belle Prairie, MN, with Father Harold Kost officiating. Burial was at St. Adalbert Catholic Cemetery in Little Falls, MN.

Elmira was born May 24, 1921, to Anton and Marcelene (Le May) Smith in Little Falls. She attended St. Aloyious and Little Falls public schools. Elmira was united in marriage to Louis Susalski on September 19, 1938 in Little Falls. She worked at Munsingwear and Woolworth, Co. Elmira enjoyed picnics, fishing, reading, Bingo, and playing cards. Louis passed away July 16, 1997. Elmira was a resident at the Woodland Good Samaritan Village for the last eight years. She was also a member of the Little Falls V.F.W. Auxiliary.

Survivors include her son Gerald Susalski and wife Mary Ann of Little Falls; daughters, Mrs. Henry (Maureen) Stumpf of Pierz, MN, Mrs. Dennis (Margaret) Welch of Fort Ripley, MN, Lois Pauly of Little Falls, Mrs. David (Nancy) Lupro of Cornelius, OR, and Mrs. Greg (Denise) Luberts of Little Falls; sister Corinne Thelander of Placentia, CA; and brother Earl Smith of Louisville, KY; 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Louis in July, 1997, one grandson, and one great-grandson.

Casketbearers were Jamie Luberts, Jeremy Luberts, Mike Stumpf, Louie Stumpf, Pat Stumpf, Danny Stumpf, Jason Pauly and John Pauly.

Henry Larson
Henry Clarence Larson, founder and President of Chapel of the Highlands Funeral Home in Millbrae, CA, passed away in Burlingame, CA January 17, 1999.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated at Saint Dunstan’s Catholic Church in Millbrae on January 22. Committal was at Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Colma.

He was the beloved husband of the late Mabel Alice Larson. He was born on his parents’ farm (which is now Camp Ripley in Green Prairie Township, outside Little Falls, MN, on May 2, 1913. He was the youngest of three brothers, the late Frank Larson and the late Ernest Larson and one sister the late Bertha Olson. He was a graduate of Little Falls High School. He moved to California in 1941 and worked at Kaiser Shipyard in Richmond, welding Liberty Ships during World War II. He built and opened Chapel of the Highlands in October 1952. He was a member and past president of the Millbrae Lions Club and past chairman of the Youth Week Student Essay Contest for many years; past president, two terms, of the Millbrae Chamber of Commerce; past President of the San Mateo County Funeral Directors Association; member of the California Funeral Directors Association member of the Elk Lodge in San Mateo; former member of the San Bruno Moose Lodge and Millbrae Toastmasters; the San Mateo County Deputy Coroner since 1954; an alumnus of the University of California at Berkeley and the San Francisco College of Mortuary Science; a founding member of the Millbrae business community and is listed in the Who’s Who directory of extraordinary professionals. Survivors include his son, Paul Albert Larson of Millbrae, CA, and also many dear relatives in Minnesota, Florida and San Jose, CA.; many great nieces and great nephews and their families.

Doris Tofsly
Doris Mathilda Tofsly, age 75, died January 21, 1999, at First Care Hospital in Fosston, MN.

A funeral service was held January 25 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in McIntosh, MN, with Pastor Elton Jorde officiating. Interment was at St. John’s Cemetery, King Township, rural McIntosh.

Doris was born December 17, 1923, to parents Gust and Mary (Berglund) Johnson in Freedhem, MN, in Morrison County. She was baptized and confirmed in Zion Lutheran Church in Freedhem.

Doris graduated from Little Falls High School and the University of Minnesota School of Nursing. She was a nursing supervisor at Minneapolis General Hospital where she gave care to patients with polio. Doris graduated from the Sister Kenny Institute of Physical Therapy in Minneapolis, MN, and worked there until 1955. She also nursed at Shriner’s Hospital for Crippled Children in Minneapolis, King County Hospital in Seattle, WA, and at the Honeywell plant in Minneapolis. Doris was united in marriage to Berner Tofsly on September 27, 1958, in Minneapolis and they had since resided and farmed north of McIntosh. During that time, Doris also worked at Pioneer Memorial Care Center in Erskine and at the hospital in Fosston. She was a member of the W.E.L.C.A. and Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in McIntosh.

Survivors include her husband, Berner; two children, Julie Quinn and husband Mike and John and wife Ashley, all of McIntosh; four grandchildren, Julia, Terry, Jacquelyn and Christopher; three brothers, Danford and wife Olga of Little Falls, MN, Edward and wife Erthel of Edina, MN, and Warren and wife Agnes of Johnstown, IA; one sister, Florence Schmidt and husband Thomas of Miami, FL; sister-in-law, Evelyn Radke of Fargo and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant brother; one sister, Verna Wallace and one niece.

Pallbearers were Larry Swenson, Mark Swenson, Robert Swenson, James Swenson, Richard Swenson and David Monk.

Honorary pallbearers were all of Doris’ relatives and friends.

Noa Baines Wirth
Noa Baines Wirth died peacefully in his sleep on April 29, 1999, at the Cochran House in Hastings, MN.
Noa was born on March 27, 1975, in Little Falls, MN. As a boy, he loved adventure and playing outdoors. He was badly burned at the age of six and was hospitalized in St. Paul for a time. Noa attended Lincoln Elementary and the Middle School in Little Falls. He later moved to the Twin Cities and attended a number of different schools before graduating from Onamia High School in 1993. Noa had worked as a landscaper and a cement laborer while living in the Twin Cities. He enjoyed people and had a big heart for children. Noa battled the many problems that he faced with courage and the loving support from his family and friends.

Survivors include his mother, Lori Wirth and special friend, Brent Hubert; his father Ronald and wife, Angie Wirth; his grandmothers, Phyllis Hoskins and Anna Wirth; his sisters Amber and husband, Josh Tompson and Elizabeth Wirth; niece, Zyla Thompson; and many relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandfathers Allen Hoskins and Merlyn Wirth.
