Herbert F. Schefers, 92

Herbert Schefers, a resident of Foley, died Sept. 13, 2010, at the Foley Nursing Center in Foley.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Morrill, with the Rev. Dan Walz officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery with military honors presented by the Hillman American Legion.

Herbert Schefers was born Aug. 3, 1918, in Richmond, to John and Anne (Schlangen) Schefers. After the Armistice Day snowstorm of 1940, he hitchhiked to Long Beach, Calif., to work as a welder in the Kaiser Ship Yards. After the attack of Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Hawaii, where he was commissioned as a welder at the Pearl Harbor Naval Base. Following his discharge, he moved back to St. Joseph. He married Isabel Backes Sept. 5, 1949, at St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Farming. The couple owned a grocery store in St. Cloud before buying a farm north of Ramey where they raised eight children, retiring in 1989. He moved to the Foley Nursing Center in 2007. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and telling stories. Herbert was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Morrill and was a member of the Hillman American Legion Post #602.

He is survived by his wife, Isabel of Foley; sons and daughters, Terry (Dana) of Ham Lake, Linda Young (David Hoffmann) of Hillman, Diane (John) Struffert of Hillman, Tom (Krissy) of Foley, John (Darla) of Richmond, Jim (Bonnie) of Foley, MaryAnn Schefers of Pine City and Rick (Charlotte Moeller) of Foley; brothers and sisters, Clara Stueve of St. Joseph, Irene Pratt of Long Beach, Calif., Corbin (Lori) Van Nuys, Calif., Anselm (Florentine) of St. Cloud and Oswald “Chub,” Anchorage, Alaska; 15 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Ervin, Norbert, Al, Alma Buerman and Viola Wiesner and son-in-law, Kenny Young.

Marguerite Lund, 79

Marguerite “Marge” Lund, a resident of Maple Grove, formerly of Robbinsdale, was peacefully called home to her Lord Sept. 11, 2010. She joins her beloved husband of 52 years, Jerome “Jerry” Lund and her parents, Stella and John Siminski.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, at the Church of St. Joseph in Maple Grove. Interment was in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery.

She is survived by her children, Elizabeth (John) Hass, Vicki (Roger) Dixon, Deborah (Joel) Manthei, Lori Cleaveland, Michael (Karen) Lund and Julie (Wayne) Ruffcorn; 11 beloved grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister, Doris (Edwin) Skwira; sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces and nephews.

She had worked at Alexander and Alexander for 10 years, but her most important job was that of loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was an active member of the Church of St. Joseph the Worker for many years and a longtime member of the Church of the Sacred Heart, Robbinsdale.

Elmer V. Gill, 78

Elmer V. Gill, a resident of Swanville, died Sept. 11, 2010, at St. Cloud Hospital after a battle with cancer.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Tuesday, at St. John’s Catholic Church in Swanville, with Father Ken Tillman officiating. Burial was at St. John’s Parish Cemetery in Swanville.

Elmer was born Feb. 18, 1932, in St. Nicholas, to the late Leo and Ann (Thomas) Gill. He was united in marriage to Bernice Ewertowsky Sept. 15, 1953, in Albany. The couple resided in St. Joseph and Elmer worked at Franklin in St. Cloud for over 20 years. In 1971, they moved to a farm near Swanville and Elmer started Gill’s Cabinet Shop. He enjoyed his grandchildren, hunting and fishing.

Elmer is survived by his wife, Bernice; son, Byron (Denise) Gill of Burtrum; daughter, Lynette Hartung of Albany; grandchildren, Johnathan and Nicole Gill and Samantha Hartung; sisters, Arleen (Al) Poepping of St. Joseph and Sally (Bud) Spencer of Arkansas.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents Leo and Ann Gill.

Louis Stangl, 52

Louis Stangl, a resident of rural Pierz, died Sept. 9, 2010.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz, with the Rev. Gerald Dalseth officiating.

Louis was born Feb. 5, 1958, in Little Falls, the son of Marvin and Beatrice (Casey) Stangl. He grew up on the family farm east of Pierz. He attended grade school and high school in Pierz, graduating with the class of 1976. He continued his education at St. Cloud State, graduating in 1981 with a degree in education. He taught school in Hector for one year before moving back to the farm to farm with his father. Along with farming, Louis was a Mycogen seed dealer. He was currently a supervisor on the Pierz Township Board, lectored in church, was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He enjoyed ice fishing, bowling, watching sports on TV, reading the newspaper, anything outdoors and especially spending time with his family.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Joseph (Diane) Stangl of Little Falls, Mark Stangl of Pierz, and Emily Stangl of Pierz; grandchildren, Ellie Hanson of Pierz and Aliana Stangl of Little Falls; father, Marvin (Marion) Stangl of Pierz; siblings, Cheryl (Keith) Gaspers of Bloomington, Debra Stangl of Inver Grove Heights, Judy (Tim) Diederichs of St. Cloud and Nancy (Stacey) Stangl Taylor of Minneapolis; step-siblings, Ann (Steve) Kerska Web Lake, Wis., and Debbie (Charlie) Poser of Pierz, many uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.

Louis was preceded in death by his mother, Beatrice Stangl (1988); grandparents, Louis and Jane Casey, Joseph and Anna Stangl; stepbrothers, Wayne and LeRoy Plante.

Hazel Schleif, 88

Hazel Lillian Schleif, a resident of Crystal, died Sept. 13, 2010.

She was born Feb. 7, 1922, in Rockford Township.

Funeral services were held Thursday, at Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church, in Ply-mouth. There was a private family interment. She is survived by children, Ron (Lee), Lois Jordan (Wally Lueck), Karen Malecka, Jerry (Mary) and Betty (Chris) Taylor, 21 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; sister, Doris Neuendorf; brother, Marvin (Barb) Kiphuth; brother-in-law, Lyle (Donna) Schleif.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Richard and Bertha Kiphuth; nephew, Jeffrey Kiphuth, brother-in-law, Harold Neuendorf; and sons-in-law, Phil Malecka and Richard Jordan.

Margaret Allord, 83

Margaret “Jeanne” Allord, a resident of Baxter, formerly of St Mathias, died Sept. 12, 2010, at her home.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Thursday, at St Mathias Catholic Church in St. Mathias Township, with Father Steve Laflamme officiating. Burial was in St. Mathias Cemetery. Jeanne was born Aug. 20, 1927 in Smithland, Iowa, to Walter and Mabel (Christensen) Daniels. She was a member of St Mathias Catholic Church, CCW, and the Christian Mothers. She was united in marriage Aug. 4, 1945, to Louis Allord, in Brainerd.

Survivors include her husband, Louis; three daughters, Sally (Clem) DeRosier, Candace (Darrell) Cline and Bonnie Allord; 10 grandchildren, Angie Simmonds, Michael DeRosier, Jennifer Omberg, Shane Cline, Amber Henry, Bonnie Sandberg, Daniel Cline, Ashley Cline, Nicole Yourczek and Eric Allord; 22 great-grandchildren; one great great-granddaughter; two sisters, Helen Mead and Phyllis McLarty; and one brother, Billy Daniels.

She was preceded in death by her son, Jeffrey Allord; one grandson, Christopher Allord; one great-grandson, Joshua Simmonds; eight brothers, Charles, Muriel, Ralph, Robert, Everett, Paul, Kenneth and Jack; and one sister, Edith Mead.

Gary Gutzkow, 69

Gary Gutzkow, a resident of East Bethel died Sept. 8, 2010, at his home.

Funeral services were held Monday, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in East Bethel with the Rev. Brian Fragodt and the Rev. Dan Nordin officiating. Interment was in Our Saviour’s Lutheran Cemetery.

Gary Harold Gutzkow was born June 20, 1941, in Braham to Stewart and Audrey Gutzkow. He was raised and lived his early years in Braham. On March 22, 1958, he married Phyllis Hall and they made their home in Rice and became the parents of 10 children. Gary later moved to St. Cloud where he met and married Cindy Heurung. They made their home in the St. Cloud area and then moved to East Bethel in 1981. Gary retired from Hoffman Engineering in Anoka and was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in East Bethel. He especially enjoyed the family activities and seeing his grandchildren. He loved making wood and being outdoors. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and going to movies.

Gary is survived by his mother, Audrey (Les) Sundemeyer of Braham; one son, William (Mary) Gutzkow, Sr. of Royalton; five daughters, Rebecca Aspaas of East Bethel, Shelly (Steve) Schwendemen of Little Falls, Terri (Bob) Veldkamp of Burtrum, Krissy Gutzkow of Sauk Centre and Vicki (Darryl) Rekowski of Little Falls; 17 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Earl (Sally) Gutzkow of Isanti, Henry (Roxanne) Gutzkow of Grasston and Steve (Luann) Gutzkow of Mora; two stepsisters, Pam Lehmen of Iowa, Becky (Don) Dozel of South Dakota; and by many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Stewart; wife Cindy; three sons, Michael Gary, John Paul and Jeffery Scott; three daughters, Valerie, Shannon and Manya; sister Sharon Kennedy; and brother, Kenny Gutzkow.

The pallbearers were Corey Gilbertson, Paul Heurung, Ron Matros, Virg Paulson, Monte Spears and Robb Wagner.
