Gordon Lehrke, 80

Gordon “Concertina Gordy” William Lehrke, a resident of Brainerd, died Sept. 12, 2010, at Bethany Good Samaritan Village.

Services for Gordy were held Friday, at the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter. Interment with military honors was held at Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Camp Ripley.

Gordy was born Nov. 29, 1929, in Swanville, the son of Carl Frederick and Anna (Getzkon) Lehrke. He enlisted in the U.S Army in 1954, and served for two years in Fort Hood, Texas, as a tank commander. In 1955, he was united in marriage to Margaret Mary Prokott. He worked as a sheet metal foreman for many years at Ammerman Company in Stillwater and later at Clow Stamping in Merrifield. In addition to his work as a foreman, the couple enjoyed owning Shing Wako Resort from 1977 - 1979. Gordy was an accomplished musician and taught concertina to over 100 students. For over 55 years, he played in a number of bands and was inducted into the World Concertina Hall of Fame in 1997.

Gordy will be missed by his wife, Margaret; his children, Greg (Pauline) Lehrke, of Evansville, Karen (Geoff) Gihle, of Phoenix, Ariz., Jeff Lehrke of Brainerd, Bruce (Bev) Lehrke of Pine River, and Paula (Mike) Cotten of Baxter; siblings, Glen (June) Lehrke of Zephyr Hills, Fla, Elmer (Jean) Lehrke, of Sunbury, Ohio and Alice (Steve) Pulka, of Iron Mountain, Mich.; grandchildren, Jeremy Lehrke, Shane Gihle, Jason Gihle, Josh Gihle, Charles Cooley (Lehrke), Sara and Anna Gardner; great-grandchildren, Sean Gihle, Gunnar and Gordon Lehrke; and many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings, Raymond, Ivaline, Mildred, Carl, and Tina.

Illa Johnson, 93

Illa Mae Johnson, a resident of Huron, S.D., died Sept. 6, 2010, at the SunQuest Healthcare Center in Huron.

Her funeral service was held Sept. 8, at the Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with burial at the Restlawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Huron.

Illa Mae Kimlicka, the daughter of Albert and Nettie (Crisman) Kimlicka, was born Jan. 9, 1917, in Firesteel, S.D. Illa Mae married Alvin E. Johnson May 23, 1939, in Redfield, S.D.

Survivors include her daughter Karleen Schmiedt and her husband Dean of Fort Ripley; Linda (Johnson) Fillingham and husband Bill; Illa’s six grandchildren, Kelly (Kyle Serocki) Schmiedt, Andrew Schmeidt, Matthew (Cheryl) Johnson, Alex (Lisa) Johnson, Michael (Judy) Hubbard and Melissa (Erik) Darzins, seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Illa Mae was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Alvin; her son, Roger Johnson; brother, Bud Kimlicka; and her sisters, Doris Dahl and Gladys Ziegler.

Sarah Ganfield, 91

Sarah W. “Si” Ganfield, a resident of 1114 Pine Street, Marquette, Mich., passed away peacefully Friday evening, Sept. 3, 2010, in the presence of her loving family and friends, and in the care of Lake Superior Hospice.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday, Sept. 11, in St. Michael Catholic Church, with the the Rev. Larry VanDamme officiating. Burial took place in the Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mrs. Ganfield was born Dec. 2, 1918, in Randall, the fifth of 13 children born to the late George and Clara (Portz) Calhoun. A 1937 graduate of Little Falls High School, Si met her husband, Clifford Ganfield, while working as a waitress at the Sands Café in Little Falls. They were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Little Falls Nov. 9, 1941. They first set up a home in St. Cloud, remaining there through the time Cliff was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, they moved to Kingsford, Mich., in 1947, and in 1952, they settled in Marquette where they had resided ever since. Si had a hardworking spirit of caring for others which evolved during her younger years as she assisted in the care of her siblings. While raising her six children, Si worked as a waitress for 17 years at the former White Star Restaurant, which later became the Coachlight Restaurant in Marquette. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church as well as its Altar Society where she assisted in their many charitable projects over the years. Si was never happier than when she was with her family and never passed up an opportunity to visit them or have them into the family home. This emphasis on family is the legacy she passes on to her children and grandchildren. In her free time, she enjoyed gardening, cooking and entertaining.

She is survived by six children, Karen (Gary) Everson of Mission Viejo, Calif., Richard (Julie) Ganfield of Bloomfield Hills, Mich., Dianne (Tim) Bennett and Mary Ganfield, both of Marquette, Dale (Lucy) Ganfield of Apex, N.C. and Sara (Brian) VanDeKreeke of Green Bay, Wis.; 14 grandchildren, Richard Everson, Colleen Everson, Robert (Barbara) Everson, Alexa (Chris) Ellswood, Nathan (Tawnya) Ganfield, Kelly (Greg) McQuillan, Katie (Tim) Green, Anna (Jake) Edwards, Molly Bennett, Ryan Ganfield, Brianna Ganfield, Monica (Justin) Moore, Allen VanDeKreeke and Claire VanDeKreeke; 18 great-grandchildren, Danny and Drew Everson, Emily, Sara and Jenna Everson, Marissa and Emma Ellswood, Ambrose, Xavier, Lauren and Ashlyn Ganfield, Nicholas, George and Tulah McQuillan, Theresa Green, Benny and Clayton Edwards and Jimmy Bennett; three sisters, Ann Hansen of Benecia, Calif., Dona (Gene) Bittrolff of Conroe, Texas and Clare (Wally) Ritchie of Salem, Mass.; two brother Richard (Darlene) Calhoun of Danville, Calif. and Clarence “Speed” (Gayle) Calhoun of San Jose, Calif.; also numerous nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as faithful and loving caregivers: Lois Stanley, Mary Peterson and Sally Schneider.

Preceding her in death besides her parents, was her beloved husband, Clifford Ganfield, Dec. 2, 1994; three brothers George, Tom and Ray Calhoun; four sisters Peggy Round, Catherine Bednark, Bea Monahan and Rosemary Calhoun.

Pallbearers were Nathan Ganfield, Ryan Ganfield, Allen VanDeKreeke, Chris Ellswood, Jake Edwards, Greg McQuillan, Tim Green and Rob Noel. Honorary pallbearers were Robert Everson and Richard Everson.

Eileen Doucette, 83

Eileen Doucette, a resident of Fort Ripley, died Sept. 8, 2010, at Good Samaritan Society in Bethany.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday at St. Mathias Catholic Church. Burial was in St. Mathias Cemetery.

Eileen was born Sept. 27, 1926, in Sauk Rapids, to Jacob and Mary (Gottwalt) Popp. She was a member of the St. Mathias CCW and Christian Mothers. She was a retired chicken farmer and a Senior Companion Volunteer.

She is survived by her three sons, Ed Doucette, Bernie Doucette and Wayne (Lynn) Doucette; daughter Maria (Brad) DeRosier; six grandchildren, Neil, Kaitlin Doucette, Megan DeRosier, Spencer DeRosier, Bonnie Doucette and Nicholas Doucette; and two brothers, Joe and Loren Popp.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Marcell; two sons, Mark and Roger; two sisters, Vergie Burgraff, Marlys Schlicting and one brother, Eugene Popp.

Lorayne Gunderson, 86

Lorayne E. Gunderson, a resident of Little Falls, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Sept. 6, 2010, at St. Gabriel’s Hospital in Little Falls.

Funeral services were held Friday, at First Baptist Church in Little Falls, with the Rev. Steve Priola officiating. Burial was in Oakland Cemetery. Lorayne was born Aug. 7, 1924, in Swan River Township, Morrison County, to the late John and Martha (Habas) Habas. She grew up in Swan River Township and attended District #45 country school and graduated from Little Falls High School in 1943. She attended St. Paul Bible College, graduating in 1947 with a teaching degree. During that time, she worked at Quality Park Envelope and Sears in St. Paul. Lorayne taught country school in Benedict, N.D. and in Turtle Lake, N.D. until returning to Morrison County to teach. She was united in marriage to Glen K. Gunderson Dec. 27, 1952, in the Mission Covenant Church in Little Falls. The couple dairy farmed in Swan River Township near Elmdale, until her husband’s death in 1974. She became disabled with multiple sclerosis in 1968, but continued to live on the family farm with her children until 1980. Lorayne moved to Little Falls with her daughter, Joyce, who had been her primary care giver along with St. Otto’s Day Care. She became a resident of St. Otto’s Care Center in 2005. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Little Falls. Lorayne enjoyed gardening in her earlier years, reading, especially her Bible, and spending time with her grandchildren and family.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Gordon Gunderson and friend, Valerie Landy of Sartell; daughters Janet Eller of Palm Coast, Fla. Joyce Gunderson of Little Falls and Patricia (Keith) Lorenz of Little Falls; 10 grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Lorayne was preceded in death by her husband, Glen (1974); her parents; brother Joseph (Muriel) Habas; sisters Mary Habas, Anna (Nester) Quickstrom, Susan (Elmer) Bloom, Katherine (Paul) Tarasar, Helen Habas, and Olga (Danford) Johnson.

Honorary pallbearers were Lynnell, Jannell, Rachael and Crystal Lorenz, Nikki Hegna, Heidi and Tiffany Eller

Casketbearers were Mark Gunderson, Darrell Lorenz, Kendall Lorenz, David Habas, Danford Johnson Jr., Kevin Thalin and Doug Tarasar.

Yvonne Blake, 79

Yvonne C. Blake, a resident of Elk River, was welcomed by the angels after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, Sept. 6, 2010.

A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Church of St. Andrew in Elk River. Interment was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls.

She was a lifelong volunteer and great humanitarian to many people, and a member of the Elk River American Legion Auxiliary and NARFE.

Survivors include her loving husband and devoted friend of 58 years, Frank; her children Jeanne (Gary) Neumann, Shelly Fjerstad, Gary Blake and Renee (Derrick) Brown; grandchildren Andrea, Emily and Dan (Mikki) Neumann; Chad, Nicole Fjerstad, Nicholas Blake (Lisa Posorske); Allison (Shawn) Doyle and Braeden Brown. She is also survived by her brother, Donald (Bonnie) Olson, and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

She was peceded in death by her parents, George and Marie Olson; sisters Lorraine Flynn and Vivian Pfeiffer.

Memorials are preferred to NARFE Alzheimer’s Association.
