Lois F. Karlson
Lois F. "Grandma Lo" Karlson of Cypress Drive in Zenith Terrace died Mon., Feb. 2, 2004 in St. Luke's Hospital. She was 83.

She was born on Oct. 2, 1920 to Eric and Cora Rhodman in Pierce, Neb. She grew up in the Tamarack-McGregor area where she attended school. She returned to Nebraska and married Roy I. Karlson in 1945. They lived in Nebraska until moving to the Duluth and Proctor area in 1956. She was a bartender and waitress at the Proctor Municipal Bar for many years and most recently an aide at the Proctor/Bay View Latch Key Program. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Proctor, the Lind-Gordon-Berg American Legion Post 106 Auxiliary in Proctor, West Duluth V F W Post 6340 Auxiliary and the Women of The Moose Chapter 585 in Proctor.

She was preceded in death by her husband Roy, her parents, sisters Lillian, Myrtle, Mae and Violet, and brothers Claude, Cleo, Tommy, Vernon, Cecil and Kermit.

She is survived by daughters Sharon (Leonard) Robinson and Roxann (Daniel) Graber, sons Gordy (Sandy) Karlson and Galen 'Googs' (Jill) Karlson, all of Proctor, a sister Delphine Gustafson of Duluth, two foster/god children Stan and Dale Heuer both of Cloquet; 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, special friend Julia Pugliese of Proctor; many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today (Thurs.) in Bell Brothers Funeral Home and will continue from noon until the 1 p.m. service Friday in Bethlehem Lutheran Church. 701 North 3rd Ave., Proctor. Pastor Jeffrey Holter officiating. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Teto John Moretto
Military Honors were accorded by the Thomas F. Stein, VFW Post 1091 for Teto John Moretto. The longtime Superior, Wis. area resident, who married Theresa F. LeMay on April 22, 1950 in Proctor, died Tues., Jan. 27, 2004, in a Duluth hospital. He was 80.

He was born in Dewey, Wis., and graduated from Dewey School. He served his country in the U.S. Army Air Force during WW II. He was employed by U.S. Steel for over 31 years, and National Iron for nine years as a press operator.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years Theresa of Superior, six daughters, four sons, three brothers, one sister, 21 grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

Burial was at Calvary Cemetery.

Elizabeth W. Backstrom
Elizabeth W. Backstrom, 88, of Duluth, died Thurs., Jan. 29, 2004, in Bayshore Health Center.

Elizabeth was born on Aug. 8, 1915, in Duluth to Frank and Gerda Wanner. She was a 1932 graduate of Central High School and graduated from the Duluth Teachers College. Elizabeth worked as a cashier and bookkeeper at Piggly Wiggly in Woodland until 1972. She was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd.

She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Clifford in 1994, a brother John Wanner, and sisters, Frances Wanner and Florence Elder.

Survivors include her daughter Sue (Larry) Jentoft of Duluth, son James (Beth) Backstrom of Inver Grove Heights, brother Frank (Virginia) Wanner of Fla., four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, sisters-in-law Ethel Wanner and Virginia (Dave) Wilson, a brother-in-law Kenneth Backstrom, and a special friend Berneta Smith.

Entombment was in Park Hill Mausoleum.

John Edwin Palmi
Shirley (Ron) Nylund of Saginaw is saddened by the death of her brother John Edwin Palmi ('Pop-Pop'). The Duluth resident died Mon., Jan. 26, 2004, at his home. He was 62.

He was born July 4, 1941, in Duluth. He married Delores Rager on Oct. 5, 1963, in Proctor, Minn. John attended Duluth Business University and worked his way from Bookkeeper to Accountant and Office Manager for various independent telephone utilities in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Montana and Alaska. John and Delores owned and operated the 'Palmi Boarding Home' until 1986.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister Geraldine, and his father Sulo.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years Dee, his mother Stella, his sons David (Lynn) of Rochester, Minn., Mike (Amy) of Slidell La., Randy (Ann Stojevich) of Cloquet, and Pat (Jessica) of Byron, Minn., seven grandchildren, and brothers William (Delores C.) of Hermantown and David (Janice) of Florida.

Burial was in Calvary Cemetery.

Richard Allen Eberl
Roland Eberl is mourning the death of his brother, Richard Allen Eberl. He died in Conroe, Texas, Jan. 15, 2004. He was 59.

Born in Duluth, Sept. 8, 1944, he retired as a chef but still loved working summers at Camp Birch Trail in Minong.

He was preceded in death by his parents Carroll and Florence Ovind and his birth father George Eberl.

He is also survived by his son Michael (Donna) Eberl, grandchildren Jonathon and Amanda, another brother Fred (Violet Salmons) Eberl, sisters Sharon (Marty) Mix and Carol (Kevin Mattila) Ovind, and many other relatives.

A memorial service was held on January 20, 2004 in Conroe, Texas.

Beatrice Elizabeth Beatty
Beatrice 'Bea' Elizabeth Beatty, 84, formerly of Oak Street for 55 years, died Sunday, Feb. 8, 2004, in Chris Jensen Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Bea was born in Duluth to Andrew and Ellen (Nygren) Carlson. She was an active member of Women of the Moose Chapter 585 for over 50 years. She loved craftwork, including sewing, needlework, flower gardening around home and making costumes for her grandchildren. She worked for Glass Block and retired from the Proctor Pharmacy. She was a member of Forbes United Methodist Church.

Bea is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Clarence Carlson.

Surviving is a son, David E. (Lynn) Beatty of Wrenshall, Minn.; a daughter, Diane E. (Gary) Lindberg of Fairfax Station, Virg; and a sister, Dorothy Thygeson of Proctor; eight grandchildren, Eric (Karin) Lindberg, Kirstin (Whit) Smith, Pamela (Rob) Monahan, Tina (Brent) Abrahamson, David (Tausha) Haley, Nichole (Brad) Glesner, Joshua Beatty, and Timothy Beatty; nine great grandchildren, Austin, Dacotah, and Savannah Haley, Brooke and Erin Lindberg, Kathryn Smith, Makayla Abrahamson, Garett Christiansen, and Tasia Beatty; a nephew, Mark (Bonnie) Carlson and nieces, Susan (Wayne) Swenson and Judy (Harvey) Burski.

Visitation will continue from 10 until the 11:00 a.m. service today, Thursday, in Forbes United Methodist Church.

Memorials to the Alzheimer's Association would be appreciated. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Esther Alma Luoma
Area residents are mourning the death of their mother Esther Alma Luoma of Emerson Road. She died Sat., Jan. 31, 2004, in St. Luke's Hospital. She was 90.

Esther was born in Brookston. She attended Central High School. In 1933, she married Theodore 'Ted' Luoma. They made their home in Floodwood, where they farmed. In 1962, they moved to Cloquet where they owned and operated the Luoma Sauna until 1973. Then they moved to Hermantown. Esther was a member of Grace Lutheran Church of Hermantown, and a member of First Lutheran Church when they moved to Duluth in 1995.

Survivors include her children Beatrice (Richard) Ojakangas of Duluth, Leonard (Wilma) Luoma of Saginaw, Marion Diez of Duluth and Delray Beach, Fla., Lillian Stocke of Duluth, Betty Mae (Tom) Dock of Eau Claire, Wis., Eugene (Kathie) Luoma of Duluth, Rudy (Marlene) Luoma of Hermantown, Nancy (Jack) LaVoy of Duluth, Alvin (Pam) Luoma of Bovey, and Dawn Luoma of Minneapolis, 35 grandchildren, and 42 great-grandchildren.

Burial was in Oneota Cemetery.

Edith Pehl
Roger (Becky) Pehl of Twig is mourning the death of his mother Edith Pehl. She died at home on Tues., Feb. 3, 2004. She was 84.

Edith was born in Saskatchewan, Canada. She attended schools in Virginia and Duluth, and graduated from Denfeld High School in 1937. In 1942 she married Wilfred Pehl. When Will returned from WW II, they began raising a family. They moved to Montana for a few years, and finally settled in Hermantown. Edith was a member of Salem Lutheran Church since 1953.

She is also survived by her husband Wilfred, daughter Linda (Dale) Benson of Duluth, another son Ralph (Marilyn) Pehl of Ham Lake, Minn., 11 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and her sister and best friend Joan (Vic) Tapper of Duluth.

Burial was in Sunrise Memorial Park in Hermantown.

Frank T. Malec Sr.
Frank T. Malec Sr., who was born in Proctor, graduated from its schools, retired as a DM&IR conductor, was an advocate for youth, and Hoghead's 2001 Honored Rail died Sat., Feb. 14, 2004, in his Third Ave. home in Proctor. He was 82.

He was born on November 18, 1921 to John and Mary Malec in Proctor. He was a 1940 PHS graduate and was a World War II Navy veteran serving on the Aircraft Carrier USS Ranger. He married Peggy Hollman on November 9, 1946 in Proctor. Frank retired from the DM&IR after 41 years in 1982 where he was a conductor. Frank was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor Moose 1302, American Legion Post 109, and the VFW Post 6320. In his younger years, Frank was a Golden Glove Boxer, coached Little League Baseball, Legion Baseball, loved to hunt, fish, curl, bowl and play softball. Frank was an avid Proctor Rails sports fan, he followed most all of the Proctor teams and attended most games. He loved gardening, he spent many hours taking care of his vegetables, only for the deer to eat everything.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Agnes and Anne Malec, and brothers Joseph and Walter.

He is survived by his wife Peggy, daughters Patricia Ann (Peter) Stephenson and Jayne Marie Malec (Lynn Slordal), both of Duluth, sons Frank T. Jr. (Donna) of Proctor, James Allen and Charles, both of Duluth, Carey John (Cathy) of Superior, and Jason (Terri) of Proctor, a sister Betty (Gene) Backus of Edina, a brother John Malec of Waukegan, Ill., a sister-in-law Kay Malec of Virginia, Minn., 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and Ray Mlodozyniec.

Services were held yesterday, Wed., at St. Rose Catholic Church with Rev. Fr. James Bissonette officiating. Burial was in Oneota Cemetery accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Memorials to the Proctor Little League c/o Frank Malec, Jr., 19 West Cypress Drive, Proctor, MN 55810 would be appreciated.

Darwin W. Bolander
Proctor police officer Douglas Bolander is mourning the death of his father, Darwin W. Bolander. The Duluth resident, died Sat., Feb. 14, 2004, at a Duluth hospital. He was 78.

He was born in Duluth and was a WW II Navy Veteran, serving in the South Pacific. He married Donna Lelonek on Oct. 15, 1946. He worked at Skelly Oil Co., and later at Hoch Oil Co. for several years before retiring as Security Guard with Midwest Patrol after 17 years of service. Darwin was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish and hunt. He was a member of VFW 6320.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, infant twin daughters, a great-granddaughter, one brother, and one sister.

He is also survived by his wife Donna, another son, a daughter, a brother, a sister, 13 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Burial was at Sunrise Cemetery.
