Phyllis Skeesick, 66

Phyllis Carol Skeesick, a resident of Long Prairie, died Oct. 3, 2010, at Centra Care Health System. A private family service and interment was held.

Phyllis was born in 1944, the daughter of Earl and Laura (Osterberg) Skeesick. After graduating from high school, Phyllis worked in banking. She was employed by Wells Fargo for over 40 years. She retired in 2005. Phyllis enjoyed watching baseball and playing cards.

She will be missed by her sisters, Patricia (Roger) Katterhagen and Darlene (Les) Sartell; 12 nieces and nephews; 19 great-nieces and nephews; five great-great-nieces and nephews; and her aunt, Nancy Motzko.

Arthur Matich, 73

Arthur Matich, a resident of Brainerd, died Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2010, at St. Joseph’s Medical Center.

Services for Arthur were held Friday at Riverside Union Church in Brainerd, with a private family interment.

Arthur was born July 15, 1937, in Brainerd, the son of Jake and Amanda (Johnson) Matich. Arthur was raised and lived in Brainerd all his life. He farmed, worked at the paper mill and was also a truck driver later in life. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, hunting, fishing and gardening. He loved making wine and drinking Schmidt beer. His family and friends will remember him as a person full of kindness who would do anything for anyone and was loved by all.

He will be missed by his wife of 52 years, Myra; mother, Amanda; his children, Perry (Kris) Matich and their family Amy (Brad) Eigenheer and Michael (Annette) Matich, Larry Matich, Terry Matich, and Patrick (Lynae) Matich and their family Makayla, Sadie and soon-to-be William Arthur; great-grandchildren, Natalie and Logan, children, of Mike and Annette; sisters, Mable Anderson and Myrt Gnahn; brothers, Jim (Beverly) Matich, John Matich, and Donald (Wendy) Matich; and many nieces and nephews.

Gerald B. Janey

Gerald B. Janey, a resident of Litchfield, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at the Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at the Church of St. Philip in Litchfield, with Father Joseph Steinbeisser as celebrant. Interment was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery near Little Falls.

Gerald B. Janey was born June 28, 1952, to Phillip and Evangeline (Lange) Janey in Little Falls. He grew up near Sobieski and attended school in Swanville, graduating in 1970. After high school, he worked for Larson Boats and Franklin Manufacturing. He served in the U.S. Army from 1972 to 1974. After he returned from military service, he continued his education at St. Cloud Vo. Tech, graduating in 1976. He lived in Rice, and worked as a bulk milk truck driver while in school and for a short time after graduating. Gerry was united in marriage to Mary Van Hercke Nov. 13, 1976, in Little Falls. They moved to Litchfield when Gerry took a job with Ideal Lumber, where he worked for 21 years. He then worked for Miller Architects and Builders for five years and Marcus Construction for five years in Prinsburg as a job superintendant. Gerald was a member of the American Legion Post #104, the Litchfield Volunteer Fire Department, the Knights of Columbus and was an active member of the Church of St. Philip. He enjoyed helping his son with building projects, fishing, ice fishing, deer hunting, riding motorcycle with his ‘crew,’ snowmobiling, playing cribbage and horseshoes and trips to the Dairy Queen. Gerald always found the positive things in life.

Gerry is survived by his wife, Mary of Litchfield; son, Eric Janey of Litchfield; mother, Evangeline Janey; siblings, Pat (and Kathy) Janey, Kevin (and Anita) Janey, Jeff (and Rose) Janey all of Little Falls, Phillip (and Anita) Janey of St. Joseph, Mark Janey of St. Cloud, Sharon (and Dan) Klisch of Clear Lake, Mary Ann (and Pete) Klemmer of Albany and sister-in-law, Mary Ann Janey of St. Joseph, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Phillip, paternal and maternal grandparents; brother, Gerard; father and mother-in-law, Ray and Jeannette VanHercke and several aunts and uncles.

Mildred Bieniek, 77

Mildred Mary Bieniek, a resident of Bowlus, died Oct. 5, 2010, at the Pierz Villa after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus, with Father Michael Kellogg officiating. Burial was at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Little Falls.

Mildred was born Nov. 29, 1932, in Agram Township, Pierz, to the late Fred and Alma Stumpf. She was united in marriage to Felix Bieniek May 30, 1956, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Pierz. Mildred enjoyed playing cards and also enjoyed listening to old time music. She also loved going camping, traveling to different places and most of all enjoyed the time she spent with her family. She was a member of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Bowlus and the Bowlus American Legion Auxiliary. Mildred was deeply loved and will be dearly missed.

Mildred is survived by sons, James (Kim) Bieniek of St. Stephen and Wayne (Renee) Bieniek of Bowlus; daughters, Diane (Pat) Sobania of Bowlus, Dorine (Richard) Peterick of Royalton, and Sharon (Urban) Brady of Bowlus; brothers, Jerome Stumpf of Pierz, Leo Stumpf of Pequot Lakes, Wilbert Stumpf of Panama City, Fla., and Melvin Stumpf of Little Falls; sister, Olivia Maciej of Bowlus and brother-in-law, Richard Long of Peoria, Ariz.; 16 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Felix; parents, Fred and Alma Stumpf; sister, Mary Ann Long; and brother-in-law, Alois Maciej.

Honorary casketbearers were granddaughters, Tara Bieniek, Tanya Lampert, Melissa Reis, Jolene Bartkowitz, Robin Brady and Heather Brady. Casketbearers were grandsons, Travis Bieniek, Jeremy Bieniek, Scott Sobania, Shawn Sobania, Trevor Sobania, Cory Bieniek, Kyle Bieniek, Jesse Brady, Josh Brady and Ryan Brady.

Jan Hanson, 61

Jan (Peavey) Hanson, a resident of Little Falls, formerly of Bloomington, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2010, at her residence.

A memorial service for Jan Hanson was held Tuesday, at First Lutheran Church in Little Falls, with Pastor David Sperstad officiating.

Jan Y. Peavey was born Nov. 21, 1948, in Minneapolis, to the late James and Helen (Gysler) Peavey. She grew up and attended the local schools in Bloomington, being a member of the first graduating class from Kennedy High School. Jan was united in marriage to Rick Hanson Dec. 7, 1968, at St. Luke;s Lutheran Church in Bloomington. They settled in South Minneapolis until 1972, when Rick’s job required a move to Grafton, N.D. The family then moved to Little Falls in 1974, and have resided here ever since. Jan worked as a nurse at many different clinics and with many different doctors, including Drs. Forcier and Thomas. She enjoyed listening to music, as well as attending and performing in musicals. Jan was active in her church, First Lutheran, serving on committees and singing with their choir. She was involved in our Sister City relationship with LeBourget, France, hosting families and visiting their city in 1998. Jan enjoyed cross-country skiing, camping and loved animals, caring for her many dogs and cats. Jan was a loving grandma to her four very most favorite grandchildren.

Jan is survived by her husband, Rick; daughters, Kristen (David) Goligowski of New Brighton and Bridget Hanson of Shoreview; grandchildren, Ben, Ellie, Jasie and Gigi Goligowski; and brother, Jim Peavey of Bloomington.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Duwayne ‘PeeWee’ DeRosier, 72

Duwayne Michael “PeeWee” DeRosier, died at Good Samaritan Society-Woodland Oct. 2, 2010, after a courageous battle with progressive supranuclear palsy.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held Wednesday, at St. Mathias Catholic Church in Fort Ripley, with Father Steve Laflamme officiating. Burial was at the church cemetery following the service.

Duwayne was born Sept. 14, 1938, at his childhood home in Fort Ripley Township to the late Lucien and Mabel (Avery) DeRosier. He attended the country schoolhouse near his home and graduated from Washington High School in 1956. He served in the U.S. Army from 1961 - 1963. On Nov. 27, 1968, he was united in marriage to Betty Lou Harrison in Little Falls. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad. Being the smallest man on the crew he was affectionately called “PeeWee” by his co-workers. He also worked at Potlatch Paper Mill. Together, PeeWee and Betty owned and operated The Canteen Supper Club from 1972 - 1976 and The Fort Steak House from 1969 until their retirement in 2002.PeeWee was a lifetime member of St. Mathias Catholic Church. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, the Brainerd American Legion Post 255, the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, the Elks Lodge, the Moose Lodge and the Eagles Club. He enjoyed time with family and friends, playing with his grandkids, deer hunting, fishing, horseshoe, watching sports and playing cards.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 42 years, Betty, children, Dan (Maureen) Riles of Fort Ripley, Richard (Kathy) Riles of Brainerd, Shawn (Mike) Poppen of Rice and Michelle DeRosier (Shane Thompson) of Fort Ripley; grandchildren, Stacey, Jennie, Donald, Casey, Joshua, Rachel, Brynn, John, Elise and great grand-daughters Shayna and Amarria. He is also survived by his brothers, Charles (Janeen) DeRosier and Ronald (Marie) DeRosier and sisters Lois Ehmke and Geri (Duane) Villnow. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by brothers, Howard De- Rosier and Peter DeRosier and sisters, Charlotte Stevens, Opal Johns and Teresa Thesing.

Paul Czeck, 89

Paul Martin Czeck, a resident of Bowlus, died Sept. 30, 2010, at his home in Bowlus.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday at St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale, with Father Michael Kellogg officiating. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Friends may call from 4 p.m. - 8 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3 and from 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. Monday, at the church. Parish prayers will be prayed at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at church.

Paul was born in Elmdale Township, Morrison County, Nov. 1, 1920, to the late Ralph Czeck and Mary Schwalbe. He was united in marriage to Martha Kaiser Nov. 27, 1945, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Royalton. The couple made their home in Bowlus. Paul worked for Elmdale Mutual Insurance Company and North Star Insurance Company for 27 years. He was a longtime member of St. Edward’s Catholic Church in Elmdale. Paul enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming and riding his four-wheeler.

Paul is survived by his son, Jim (Dorene) Czeck of Bowlus; daughter, Rita Schmid of Avon; granddaughters, Michelle (Jon) Iveland of Alexandria and Barbara (Adam) Hernke of Plymouth; sisters, Helen Phillips of Sartell, Martha Brady of Crosby, Loretta Peka of St. Cloud, Theresa Burggraff of Little Falls and Mary Ann McManus of Bloomington.

Paul was preceded in death by his wife, Martha; parents, Ralph and Mary Czeck; son-in-law, Larry Schmid; and brothers, Leonard and Alex Czeck.
