Gwen M. Daniels, 43, of Glenwood, died Wednesday, Jan. 20, 1999, at South View Health Care Center in West St. Paul, after a lengthy illness.

Angela Steen

Angela Kay Steen, 16, of Morris died Friday, Jan. 15, 1999, from injuries sustained in a car accident near Alexandria. Funeral Services were held Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris with the Rev. Alan Wielinski officiating. A second service was also held on Wednesday, Jan. 20, at the Minnewaska Area High School gymnasium with Minnewaska clergy officiating. A private burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Morris.

Silas Swenson

Silas Swenson, 99, of Brooton died Thursday, Jan. 19, 1999, at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood. Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 23, at the Trinity Lutheran Sogge officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Esther Greene

Esther Ella Greene, 95, of Charter Oak, Iowa, died Tuesday, Jan. 19, 1999, at the Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, Iowa.

Sherman K. Sperstad, 64

Sherman K. Sperstad, 64, of Glenwood, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
A memorial service celebrating his life was held on Monday, Sept. 17, at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Inurnment was in Glenwood Lutheran Cemetery. The Rev. Randy Chrissis and the Rev. Krista Lee officiated. Diane DeJong served as organist and Dr. Randall Pederson was the soloist. Arrangements were with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Sherman, the son of Milton and Marlys (Campbell) Sperstad, was born on June 21, 1948, in Enderlin, N.D., the second of three sons. He attended school in Enderlin until he was 14, when his family moved to Glenwood, where he attended and graduated from Glenwood High School, class of 1966.
Sherman started his career on the Soo Line Railroad the day after graduating from high school. He worked there for 42 years before retiring in 2008.

Claude Williams, 77

Claude Williams, 77, of Glenwood, died Sunday, Sept. 9, 2012, at Glenwood Retirement Village.
A memorial service celebrating his life was held on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, at All Saint’s Chapel in Glenwood Retirement Village with the Rev. Ginger Beck officiating. Arrangements were with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Claude Williams, the son of John and Sally (Madden) Williams, was born on March 21, 1935, in Totz, Ky. The youngest of 12 children, he grew up in the hills of Kentucky and attended school in rural Kentucky through the eighth-grade. On Sept. 15, 1955, Claude entered the United States Army. Following his honorable discharge on Sept. 13, 1957, Claude returned home to Kentucky where, on Feb. 28, 1959, he was united in marriage to Joyce Ann VanOver. To this union two daughters were born, Tammy and Theresa.

Vernon J. (Bud) Chan, 87

Vernon “Bud” John Chan, 87, died Friday, Aug. 31, 2012, at Douglas County Hospital from complications with pneumonia.
Vernon was born on Sept. 30, 1924, at home in Lake Mary Township, Douglas County, to Louis Sr. and Mary (Brosh) Chan. When he was born they named him Vernon, but his mother called him Bud, which he went by all of his life. He attended country school at District #14 and got his eighth-grade diploma in 1938. He helped out on the farm and worked for others doing farm work, and in 1947 he began carpentry work along with his dad and John Zavadil.

Delmer Loen, 92

Delmer Loen, 92, of Benson, died Sunday, Sept. 9, at the Glenwood Retirement Village in Glenwood.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson with Pastor Gary Brandenburg officiating. Burial was in Benson City Cemetery. Arrangements were with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson, www.zniewskifuneralhome.com.
Delmer Loen was born on Aug. 4, 1920, in Camp Lake Township, Swift County, the son of Selmer Albert and Ida (Simonson) Loen. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Pauli Lutheran Church near Swift Falls, Camp Lake Township, Swift County. He attended Camp Lake Country School District and graduated from Benson High School in 1938 and Minneapolis School of Business in 1950. Delmer served his country from July 13, 1942, to October 1, 1945, in the U.S. Army as a radio operator during World War II. On Nov. 10, 1945, he was united in marriage to Audrey Mae Welker at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Benson. This union was blessed with six children, 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Mark J. Blair, 57

Surrounded by family, Mark J. Blair of Lowry, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, after a two-year battle with cancer, having lived to the age of 57 years.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Sept. 15, at Alexandria Covenant Church in Alexandria. Pastor John LeVahn and Pastor Trinity Opp officiated. Interment was in Lake Ann Cemetery. Arrangements were with Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home of Glenwood.
Mark John Blair was born on June 23, 1955, to George and Luverne (Everson) Blair of Glenwood. He graduated from Glenwood High School in 1973, and then attended the carpentry program at Alexandria Technical College for two years, graduating in 1975 with high honors.
On June 12, 1976, Mark was united in marriage to Joyce H. Hoppe of Elbow Lake. They were united together by God at the First Baptist Church in Alexandria. Their first home was in Lowry. Together they built new homes in Lowry, hoping to trade them for farm land. Mark farmed with his dad on the home place until he was able to buy land of his own. When he purchased the land from his parents he was the fourth generation to own and operate the farm, which later became a Century Farm! Mark and Joyce raised four children as they served the Lord at Ben Wade Covenant Church.

Clinton T. “Clint” Wheeler, 99

Clinton T. “Clint” Wheeler, 99, died peacefully at home in Glenwood Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2012, following a brief illness.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of Clinton will be held Tuesday, Sept. 25, at Glenwood United Parish at 11 a.m. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
Clint was born on June 5, 1913, in Litchfield to Ray A. Wheeler and Clara (Torguson) Wheeler. Raised in Litchfield, Clint stood out in high school athletics, lettering in every sport the school provided–baseball, basketball, football, hockey and track. Also an avid musician, Clint played ukulele in their family band and traveled around the state, adding his distinctive baritone to a popular men’s quartet that sang at many of the gatherings at which Stafford King, the state auditor, spoke.
Following high school graduation, Clint apprenticed in the barbering trade with his father in Litchfield. After earning his license, he continued to practice in Litchfield before moving to Crosby-Ironton, then Belle Plaine.

Janet L. Thompson, 49

Janet Thompson, 49, of Eagan, formerly of Glenwood, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2012, at her home.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Visitation will be on Monday from 5-7:30 p.m. at the funeral home in Glenwood and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Interment will be in the Minnesota Valley Lutheran Cemetery in rural Madison. Arrangements are with the Hoplin-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Glenwood.
Janet Louise Thompson, the daughter of Winfred “Bud” and Kathleen (Keilen) Thompson, was born on Dec. 4, 1962, in Montevideo. The second of four children, she grew up on a farm near Louisburg and attended school in Madison, graduating in 1981. After high school she attended Alexandria Technical College, got married and had two sons, Matthew and Alexander. In 1985, the family moved to Glenwood, where Janet lived for several years before moving to Eagan in 2010. In early December of 2010, she was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer, which came as a complete surprise since her health history didn’t fit the typical criteria for such cancer. It was subsequently determined that Janet had been exposed to high levels of radon gas (an odorless carcinogenic gas) during the 15 years she resided in her home in Glenwood. Because of her personal experience, Janet became an outspoken advocate for radon gas testing. A complete article detailing her story was published in the Pope County Tribune last fall.

Craig Brodin
Craig Brodin, 45, of Jackson died June 17, 1998, at Jackson Medical Center Hospital after becoming ill at home. Services were held Friday at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jackson with Rev. Roger Hett officiating. Special music was provided by Kathy Wenzel, organist, and Kent Mickelson, vocalist. Pallbearers were Dave Pell, Joe Biehn, Ron Schlimeen, Phil Schafer, Doug Sangl and Bob Dorschner. Interment was in the Delafield Township Cemetery.
Craig Victor Brodin, son of Vernon and Lillie Olson Brodin, was born May 9, 1953, in Windom. He graduated from Windom High School in 1971, attended Worthing-ton Junior College and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1975. In 1974, Craig married Sue Janzen. The couple lived in St. Paul and then moved to Lakefield in 1975. Craig and Sue moved to Jackson in 1982, and later, moved to an acreage in Des Moines Township. Craig was baptized and confirmed at Delafield Lutheran Church. In 1980, he became a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where he served as a youth group leader and usher. He was also a 4-H and Boy Scout leader and coached T-ball and girls softball. At the time of his death, he was employed at Ag-Chem in Jackson as special options manufacturing office manager.

Survivors include his wife, Sue; a son, Brandon Brodin of Jackson; two daughters, Sarah Brodin of Estherville, Iowa, and Bridget Brodin at home; his parents, Vernon and Lillie Brodin of Windom; a sister, Cheryl (Kevin) Ahren of Spencer, Iowa; and a grandmother, Dagny Brodin of Windom.

Dolores Johnson
Dolores Johnson, 86, of Jeffers died June 19, 1998, at the Mankato House Health Care Center. Services were held Tuesday at the Jeffers United Methodist Church with Rev. Kathleen Brandt officiating. Special music was provided by Janis Nickel, organist, and Pastor Joe and Angela Bowman, vocalists. Pallbearers were Ken Arnsdorf, Jack Oberle, David Eidem, Richard Sykora, John Brand and Harlan Fisk. Interment was in the Jeffers city cemetery.

Dolores Leone Talbott, daughter of Clarence and Clair Bachmann Talbott, was born Aug. 28, 1912, in Craig, Iowa. The family moved to Jeffers, where Dolores attended Jeffers schools. She graduated from Jeffers High School in 1932. In 1937, Dolores married Gerald Johnson. The couple lived in Jeffers where they operated a grocery store for many years. Dolores was a 4-H and Girl Scout leader and a member of the Band Mothers. In 1931, she became a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Over the next 50 years she served in every office, including Worthy Matron. She was a member of the Garden Club. After Gerald died in 1994, Dolores remained at her home until she moved to the Mankato House Health Care Center in 1995.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant brother, Clarence. Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn (Louis) Allen of Mankato and Rita (Rodney) Dehmlow of Prior Lake; six grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Ruth Mattison
Ruth Mattison, 72, of Mt. Lake died June 17, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Village in Mt. Lake. Services were held Saturday at Alliance Missionary Church in Mt. Lake with Rev. Byron Emmert and Rev. Dennis Siebert officiating. Special music was provided by Karla Sorenson, organist, and Mr. and Mrs. Milton Holmquist, vocalists. Pallbearers were Bill Holmberg, Paul Ratzloff, Tim Mattison, Bob Holmberg, John Ratzloff and Scott Leffel. Interment was in the Mt. Lake Cemetery.

Ruth Arlene Stenbock, daughter of Rev. Harrold and Nellie Bloom Stenbock, was born Nov. 30, 1925, in Maple, Wis., in a house built by her father near the south shore of Lake Superior. She graduated from Duluth Central High School and Northwestern Bible College. In 1959, Ruth married Milford Mattison at the Bethel Union Mission in Duluth. The couple lived in Mt. Lake. She was active in child evangelism through Duluth Bethel Sunday school and Oak Hills Fellowship in Bemidji. At one time, Ruth owned a greenhouse and floral business. She also helped Milford with the bee yards and helped bottle Mattison honey. She often traveled to markets to sell honey, beeswax candles, birdhouses and crafts. Because of declining health, Ruth became a resident of the Good Samaritan Village in Mt. Lake in 1996.

She was preceded in death by her baby daughter, Marilyn; and a sister, Helga Markell. Survivors include her husband, Milford of Bingham Lake; four sons, Russell Mattison of Soldotna, Alaska; Bruce Mattison of St. James; Mark Mattison of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and David Mattison of Windom; six grandchildren; three sisters, Ethel Leffel of Poplar, Wis.; Vivian Bauers of Duluth; Evelyn Ditty of Kansas City, Kan.; and one brother, Paul Stenbock of Conway, Mass.
