John Carsten
John “Jack” Carsten, 85, of Windom died Jan. 21, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Jackson. Services were held Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bergen with Pastor Carl Bruihler officiating. Special music was provided by Rene Ysker, vocalist; Jerry Giefer, guitarist; and Carol Sandve, organist. Pallbearers were Jeff Stumpf, Darin Aden, Ryan Erpestad, J.D. Carsten, Jim Curts and Paul Olson. Interment was at Bethany Lutheran Cemetery in Bergen.
John “Jack” Elick Carsten was born Oct. 28, 1913, in Brewster to John and Jessie (Janssen) Carsten. He grew up in the Brewster and Talcot Lake area. His education was begun in Brewster and completed at the Red, White and Blue Schoolhouse of rural Cottonwood County. In 1938, Jack married Harriet Hanson. From that time, Jack farmed in the Westbrook, Slayton and Heron Lake areas prior to moving to Bergen. Harriet died in 1987 and Jack moved to Windom.
Jack was preceded in death by his wife; two brothers, Pete and Tony Carsten; and two sisters, Anna Smith and Emma Kruse. Survivors include his children, Janice (Donald) Aden of Olivia; Judith (James) Stumpf of Worthington; Joan (Gary) Erpestad of Silt, Colo.; and James (Rosie) Carsten of Bingham Lake; 14 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lena Garland of New Braunfels, Texas.
Erna Nagorske
Erna Nagorske, 93, of Windom, died Jan. 19, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Village in Mt. Lake. Services were held Friday at the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom with Rev. Paul Woebbeking officiating. Special music was provided by Linda Staples, organist. Pallbearers are all of Erna’s grandchildren. Interment was at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Windom. ErnaV.
Hoppe was born May 26, 1905, in Dale Township of Cottonwood County to Herman and Martha (Pfeil) Hoppe. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and she received her education in the country schools in Dale Township. Erna married Reinhold H. Nagorske in 1929. The couple lived on a farm following their marriage. Reinhold died in 1980. Erna was a member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Windom.
She was preceded in death by her husband, three brothers and four sisters. Survivors include her six children, Walter (Margie) Nagorske of Fairfax, Va.; Herb (Marlys) Nagorske of Bingham Lake; Eldon (Lorna) Nagorske of Windom; Alma (Bob) Peters of Montevideo; Erna (Dick) Kropp of Vesta and R. Junior (Donna) Nagorske of Truman; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren.
Gladys Anderson
Gladys Anderson, 90, of Clearbrook died Jan. 19, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook. Services were held Saturday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church at Ebro Corner with Rev. Mark Wold officiating. Interment was at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Windom.
Gladys Holte, daughter of Gabriel and Mathilda (Nelson) Holte, was born April 1, 1908, in Clearwater County. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She attended District 54 school and graduated from Clearbrook High School in 1928. She attended Bemidji State Teacher’s College and taught elementary school for six years in Minneapolis. She married Elmer H. Anderson in 1941. Gladys worked in a defense plant in California during World War II. In 1947, she and her husband purchased a small grocery store in Windom which they sold in 1951. Gladys worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for the ASCS office in Cottonwood County for 25 years. After retiring she worked in the deputy registrar’s office in Windom. She resided at the Village of Bagley prior to moving to the Good Samaritan Center in 1993.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and her husband in 1975. Survivors include a sister, Clara West of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Alf Holte of Bagley and Norman (Violet) Holte of Mankato.
Mabel Kuehl
Mabel Kuehl, 89, of Heron Lake died April 6, 1999, at the Sogge Good Samaritan Center in Windom. Services were held Saturday at United Methodist Church in Heron Lake with the Rev. Ryan Lord officiating. Special music was provided by Shelley Galle and Jeff Galle. Pallbearers were Dick Smith, Jerome Smith, Larry Smith, John Smith, Greg Sykora, Rodney Smith and Tom Kuehl. Honorary pallbearers were Gary Sykora, Curtis Sykora, Kornell Kuehl, Leonard Holck, Russ McCloud, DuWaine Sykora and Curt Miller. Interment was in the Jeffers Cemetery.
Mabel Luella Sykora, daughter of Charles and Mary (Moreviska) Sykora, was born Feb. 2, 1910, on her parents’ farm north of Westbrook. Mabel grew up on the family farm and attended country school. Following her education, Mabel stayed home and helped around the farm. Mabel married William Holck in 1932. Following their marriage the couple farmed near Westbrook, Renwick, Iowa, and then in the Jeffers area. They moved to Jeffers in 1951 and Mabel worked in a cafe and later was a cook in the school for 20 years. William died in 1974. Mabel married Leonard Kuehl in 1981. Following their marriage the couple lived in Heron Lake. As her health failed, Mabel was cared for by her daughter until she entered the Good Samaritan Center in Windom. Mabel was a member of the United Methodist Church in Heron Lake.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William; three brothers, Elmer, Claude and Vernal; and three sisters, Dorothy Kuehl, Alyce Smith and Ruth Frazee. Survivors include her husband, Leonard, of Windom; her daughter, Mary Ann Holck of Heron Lake; two step-daughters, Ardith (Loren) Voehl of Grand Rapids; and Lorene (Sylvan) Holland of Storden; two sisters, Esther (Lon) Mapes of El Cajon, Calif.; and Jeanette (Wayne) Chaney of Grass Valley, Calif.; two brothers, Clarence Sykora of Marshall and Gerald (Missy) Sykora of Camarillo, Calif.; 9 step-grandchildren; and 14 great-step-grandchildren.
Edgar Dunse
Edgar “Bud” Dunse, 78, of Jackson died April 8, 1999, at the Jackson Medical Center. Services were held Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Heron Lake Township, Jackson County, with the Rev. William L. Keller II officiating. Special music was provided by Sarah Hinkeldey. Pallbearers were Fred Henning, Robert Ladehoff, Roland Neitzel, Virgil Richter, Dennis Garms and Dennis Neitzel. Honorary pallbearers were Maynard and Marcella Hohen-stein, Delbert and Verina Seimers, Reinhold and Lois Daberkow, Leonard Rients, Dr. Floyd Bertals, Ole Berg, Dr. Milton Peitz and Ray Rehnelts. Interment was at St. Peter Lutheran Cemetery in Delafield Township, Jackson County.
Edgar Frederick Johann Dunse, son of Gustav and Amalia (Kienitz) Dunse, was born June 24, 1920, on his parents’ farm in Delafield Township, Jackson County. Bud was baptized and later confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Heron Lake Township, Jackson County. Bud grew up on the family farm and attended country and parochial school. Bud married Marcella Neitzel in 1943. Following their marriage the couple farmed in Delafield Township until moving to Lakefield in 1983. Bud worked at the Des Moines rest area and the Clear Lake rest area for many years. Bud was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church. He was one of the founders of the Heron Lake Game Producers and served as president, vice president and a director on the board. He was also a member of the Jackson County Conservation League and the Lakefield Kiwanis.
Bud was preceded in death by four sisters, Bondina Mews, Irma Richter, Ella Henning and Alma Garms. Survivors include his wife, Marcella Dunse, of Lakefied; two sons, James (Donna) Dunse of Windom; and Charles (Peggy) Dunse of Windom; four daughters, Susan Clymer of Alpha; Sandra (Joseph) Bartosh of Eldridge, Iowa; Ruth (Glenn) Dicks of Lakefield and Donna (Randy) Hendrickson of Lakefield; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandsons; one step-great-granddaughter; and one sister, Emma Ladehoff of Windom.
Paul Rausenberger
Paul Rausenberger, 96, of Westbrook died April 6, 1999, at the Westbrook Good Samaritan Center. Services were held Friday at Grace Lutheran Church in Westbrook with the Rev. Gordon Trelstad officiating. Special music was provided by Betty Rupp, organist, and Eunice Christensen, vocalist. Pallbearers were Lesley Rausenberger, Gary Busswitz, Delbert Jensen, James Rausenberger, Roger Busswitz and Everett Bevier. Interment was in Emmanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Rosehill Township, Westbrook.
Paul Edward Rausenberger, son of Jacob and Emma (Grams) Rausenberger, was born Aug. 5, 1902, in Rosehill Township, Cottonwood County. He was baptized and confirmed at Emmanuel Lutheran Church. He attended School District #48 Country School in Rosehill Township. In 1930, he married Helen Kuehl. They farmed south of Westbrook until 1955 when they purchased and operated the former Westbrook Hotel. Paul worked for the Westbrook Light Plant and retired in 1969 when they moved to Westbrook. Both Paul and Helen became residents of the Westbrook Good Samaritan Center in 1993. He was an active member of the Rosehill Emmanuel Lutheran Church where he served as a Deacon. Later he was a member of Grace Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; five brothers, Henry, William, Walter, George and Alfred; and three sisters, Freda Busswitz, Nellie Comnick and Stella Jensen. Survivors include his daughter, Vernette (Curtis) Passmore of Omaha, Neb.; one sister, Ann Lidtke of Westbrook; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Leona Mattison
Leona Mattison, 91, of Lamberton died April 11, 1999, at Valley View Manor in Lamberton. Services will be held today (Wednesday) at the Highwater Lutheran Church in rural Lamberton with the Rev. Michael Stangeland officiating. Pallbearers will be Brian Engen, Paul Tews, Terry Quiring, Brant Nerhus, Michael Mattison and Waylon Mattison. Interment will be at Highwater Lutheran Cemetery in Lamberton.
Leona Arlene Quiring, daughter of Peter and Mena (Ellingson) Quiring, was born Feb. 19, 1908, in Highwater Township. She grew up on the family farm in Highwater Township and attended country school in District #3. In 1928, she married Minnerd Mattison. The couple made their home on a farm in Highwater Township where they farmed until retiring in 1962 and moved to Lamberton. Leona was a member of Highwater Lutheran Church, W.E.L.C.A., Highwater Kitchen Band and did volunteer work at Valley View Manor.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Minnerd; brothers, Elton, “Bobby”, Lawrence “Shortie” and Walter Quiring; sisters, Vivian and Lilace Quiring. Survivors include her children, Myron (Lois) Mattison of Revere; LuEtta (James) Engen of Lamberton; Arlin (Peggy) Mattison of Jackson; Dennis (Margie) Mattison of Lamberton; and Janet Nerhus of Windom; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; sisters, Bernice (Armin) Kastner of Lamberton; Lila Ness of Siren, Wis.; and a brother Donald (Arliss) Quiring of Lamberton.
Kenneth Clark
Kenneth Clark, 73, of Westbrook died April 11, 1999, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Services were held today (Wednesday) at Grace Lutheran Church in Westbrook with the Rev. Gordon Trelstad officiating. Special music was provided by Deloris Winter, organist, and Eunice Christensen, soloist. Pallbearers were his grandchildren, David Fowler, Tim Fowler, Heather Krick, Heath Krick, Dustin Krick and Krystle Clark. Honorary pallbearers were Ken Wahl, Rich Albertson, Wayne Micshke, Rob Anderson, Voyne Bunting and Bob Bunting. Interment was at Westbrook City Cemetery with military honors provided by the Westbrook VFW and American Legion.
Kenneth Eugene Clark was born Aug. 25, 1925, to Guy and Iris (Wilde) Clark in Lakefield. He grew up in the Heron Lake area and attended the Red, White and Blue Country School. He graduated from Heron Lake High School. Following graduation he entered the Army in 1944 and served in Okinawa during World War II. He was wounded in action, honorably discharged and received the Purple Heart. In 1948, he married Addeline Nimerfroh. Following their marriage they lived near Dundee where they farmed until moving to Viola, Wis., in 1980. In 1984 they moved to Belvidere, Ill., where Kenny served as sexton of the Belvidere Cemetery. In 1989, following retirement, they moved to Westbrook to make their home. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. Kenny was a life-long member of the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, serving in various VFW positions.
He was preceded in death by his two brothers, Norman and Guy D. Clark. Survivors include his wife, Addie, of Westbrook; two daughters, Judy (Bob) Fowler of Perham; Connie (Roger) Krick of Westbrook; one son, Rick (Susan) Clark of Marshfield, Wis.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lois Legare of Maple Grove; Geneva Dannewitz of Tucson, Ariz.; Donna (Marty) Wendling of Tucson, Ariz.; and one brother, Clifford (Peg) Clark of Brooklyn Park.
Peter Mohlman
Peter Mohlman, 89, died March 27, 1999, at Pine Medical Health Care Center in Sandstone. Services were held April 7 at Peace Lutheran Church in Finlayson with the Rev. Matthew Vrudny officiating. Special music was provided by Veloren Osladil, organist. Pallbearers were Robert Stenke, Joe Koenig, Curt Muller, Robert Beehler, Mike Koenig, Donald Schmidt and Elwyn Muller. Interment was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Peter Fredreck Mohlman, son of Peter and Julia (Mueller) Mohlman, was born April 4, 1909, in Mt. Lake. He grew up and attended rural school near Mt. Lake. Peter spent his life working as a carpenter and as a bellhop at a hotel in Sioux Falls, S.D. He also served in the Army during World War II. For may years he played Santa Claus at Christmas delivering candy and gifts to needy children near his home. Since 1997, he had been a resident of Pine Medical Health Care Center in Sandstone.
Anne Lepp
Anne Lepp, 91, of Butterfield died April 25, 1999, at the Trimont Nursing Home in Trimont. Services were held today (Wednesday) at the First Mennonite Church in Mt. Lake with the Rev. Raymond Reimer officiating. Special music was provided by Lila Neufeld, organist. Pallbearers were Connie Christensen, Corwyn Lepp, Jason Lepp, Mark Lepp, Michael Lepp, Michelle Lepp, Rodney Lepp, Ryan Lepp and Shawn Lepp. Interment was at Mt. Lake Cemetery.
Anne Henrietta Friesen, daughter of Cornelius and Susanna (Sawatzky) Friesen was born May 12, 1907, in Butterfield Township, Watonwan County. She received her education in country schools and some high school in North Dakota. Anne was baptized in 1922, at Lostwood, N.D. In 1927, Anne married Peter Lepp. They made their home and farmed together near Lostwood until 1937, when they moved to a farm north of Butterfield. They farmed until they retired and moved into Butterfield in 1973. Anne worked for the St. James Greenhouse for 17 years. Peter died in 1988. Anne was a member of the First Mennonite Church in Mt. Lake, the Oak Leaf Mission Society and the Butterfield Garden Club.
She was preceded in death by her husband and three brothers, Ted, Cornelius and Jacob Friesen. Survivors include her three sons, Richard (Jean) Lepp of St. James; James (Donna) Lepp of Butterfield; and Colin (Lois) Lepp of Dodge Center; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a brother, George Friesen of Mesa, Ariz.; two sisters, Susan Enns of Stanley, N.D.; and Mary Lou (Harold) Knickrehm of St. James.
LeRoy Ziegler
LeRoy Ziegler. 62, of Lakefield died April 24, 1999, at Avera-McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D. Services were held Tuesday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lakefield with the Rev. Gary Anderson officiating. Special music was provided by Ardis Mickelson. Pallbearers were Jim Rue, Robert Dauffenbach, Roger Weber, Jim Trondson, Paul Brekke, Marv Appel and Lloyd Kruse. Interment was at Memorial Park Cemetery in Lakefield.
LeRoy Michael Ziegler, son of Michael and Murrel (Bergenske) Ziegler, was born Aug. 26, 1936, in Oakes, N.D. LeRoy was baptized and later confirmed at St. Charles Catholic Church in Oakes. He attended grade school at St. Charles Catholic School in Valley City and graduated from Valley City High School. After graduation, LeRoy lived in Valley City for a short time before moving to California. He married Georgeann Eubanks. The couple moved back to Valley City, N.D., and then to Lakefield in 1966. LeRoy spent much of his life as a truck driver and worked for Land-O-Lakes, Bob Dauffenbach at Dauffenbach Trucking and Blackowski Trucking. He was recently employed at Kruse Paving in Lakefield.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgeann; a son, Tim Carline; and a brother, LaMont “Bud” Ziegler. Survivors include his three sons, Brian Ziegler of Dell Rapids, S.D.; Jim Carline of Minneapolis; and Michael Carline of Lakefield; four sisters, Barbara Weigel of Fargo, N.D.; Jean (Edward) Monson of Lakefield; Joyce (Ronald) Higgins of Bellflower, Calif.; and Shirley Hanson of Lakefield and three grandchildren.
