Ethel Hawkanson

Ethel Hawkanson, 89, of Chisago City, died April 18, 1999.

Services were held Wednesday at the Grandstrand Funeral Home with Pastor Bob Hawkinson officiating.

Ethel Anna Hawkanson, daughter of John and Anna Janssen, was born Feb. 12, 1910. She married Theodore Hawkanson in 1949. She worked as a bookkeeper for the Cooperative Auditing Services of Minneapolis for many years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore, and her sister, Evelyn Franz.

Survivors include he son, Harold of St. Paul; and a brother, Bill (Ev) Janssen of Mt. Lake.

Ruby Schulte

Ruby Schulte, 71, of Rock Rapids, Iowa, formerly of Mt. Lake, died Aug. 3, 1999, at Rock Rapids Health Center following a long illness.

Services were held Friday at Lakeview Gospel Church in Mt. Lake with the Rev. Eldin Classen officiating.

Interment was at Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Rock Rapids with the Rev. Dave Soldner officiating.

Ruby Quiring was born Jan. 3, 1928, in Mt. Lake to Bernard and Hattie (Haygood) Quiring. She grew up in the Mennonite faith and attended country school northwest of Mt. Lake. In 1948, Ruby graduated from Mt. Lake High School and following her education she moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., to work at a bakery. Later Ruby worked at a five-and-dime store in Sioux Falls before becoming employed at Sunshine Food Markets where she worked for 10 years and became one of the leaders of the meat department.

In 1958, Ruby married Paul B. Schulte. After their marriage Ruby and Paul moved to the Schulte family farm near Rock Rapids where they farmed. In spite of living in Rock Rapids, Ruby continued to maintain contact with her home community of Mt. Lake, and few years ago she was baptized at the the Lakeview Gospel Church in Mt. Lake.

She was preceded in death by three sisters, Hattie Fast, Martha Statlander and Helen Quiring and one brother, Ben Quiring.

Survivors include her husband, Paul, of Rock Rapids; a daughter, Lori (Wally) Jansma of Sioux Falls; three grandchildren; one sister, Marie Swastsky of Eden; and three brothers, Hank (Dorothy) Quiring of Wadena; John (Rosemary) Quiring of Lake Crystal and Ted Quiring of Texas.

Peter Friesen

Peter H. Friesen, 80, of Palm Desert, died June 17, 1999, at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage.

Services were held June 19 at Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church in Palm Desert.

Peter was born June 14, 1919, to Peter P. and Elizabeth (Linscheid) Friesen in Butterfield.

In 1971, he married Shirley A. Menzies. He was a postmaster for the U.S. Postal Service in King City for 31 years. He served in U.S. Army Air Corps as a staff sergeant for five years.

He was a member of the King City Rotary Club, Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks No. 1905 in Palm Springs and the Palm Desert Community Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; three daughters, Kristin Spears of Fresno; Mary Gorbet of Paso Robles and Karen Wilson of Valley Springs; a son, Peter of Napa; four step-sons, James Mac Rae of New York City; Ken Mac Rae of Colorado Springs, Colo.; William M. Young of Ben Lomond and Robert E. Young of Santa Cruz; two step-daughters, Shirley Newlin of Aztec, N.M.; and Kathy M. Korengold of Corona; 15 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Miriam Bingham of Redding.

Buck Hayes

Buck Hayes, 82, of Windom died Aug. 6, 1999, at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.

Services were held Wednesday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom with the Rev. Charles Quinn officiating.

Interment was at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery in Windom.

Buck Hayes was born Aug. 1, 1917, to Joseph L. and Alice (Savage) Hayes Sr., in Delton Township, Cottonwood County. He was received into the Christian Faith through baptism in Comfrey and also was later confirmed there. Buck attended parochial school in Comfrey through the eighth grade and then attended high school in Comfrey.

He helped his family out around the farm for several years until he moved off the farm and worked for several different farmers over several years until he married Opal Albright on Dec. 6, 1941, in Windom. After marriage the couple farmed in Delton Township, Cottonwood County until 1970. The couple then moved to Windom and Buck began to work for the Cottonwood County Highway Department as a sign man. In 1987 Buck retired from the Highway Department.

He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother, and three sisters, Marcella, Loretta and Joann.

Survivors include his wife, Opal Hayes, of Windom; children, Stephen (Carol) Hayes of Comfrey; Warren (Besty) Hayes of Hastings; Teresa (Alan) Pudenz of Jeffers; Jerome (Alice) Hayes of Mt. Lake; Cecelia (Lynn) Krueger of Hudson, Wis.; sisters, Levita Popken of Sleepy Eye; Louella Roddy of Santa Monica, Calif.; Elaine (Doug) Blackmun of East Grand Forks; Lois (Bob) Kovacovich of Danville, Calif.; brothers, Richard (Mary) Hayes of Glencoe; Ronald (Connie) Hayes of Austin, 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Susie Peters

Susie Peters, 85, a resident of the Merriett House of St. Cloud, died Aug. 6, 1999, of colon cancer at the Merriett House in St. Cloud.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Bethel Mennonite Church in Mt. Lake.

Interment will be in the Voth Cemetery in Mt. Lake.

Susie Peters was born April 24, 1914, in Dale Township, Cottonwood County, to Dietrich and Elisabeth (Klaassen) Peters. She was a clerk in the Gamble’s store and Fairway Store in Mt. Lake for 50 years. She has lived with her niece, Dalla Laylin, for the past two years.

She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Dietrich, Cornelius and Ben; five sisters, Sara Peters, Marie Peters, Elisabeth Wiens, Kathryn Derksen, Helen Merriett and an infant sister.

Survivors include her sister, Anna Epp of Henderson, Neb.

Pauline Appel

Pauline Appel, 81, of Hutchinson, formerly of Mt. Lake, Windom and Heron Lake, died Aug. 9, 1999, at the Burns Manor Nursing Home in Hutchinson.

Services will be held Thursday at 1 p.m. at the American Lutheran Church in Windom with the Rev. Greg Hall officiating.

Interment will be in the Lakeview Cemetery in Windom.

Pauline Louise Alexander, daughter of William A. and Sarah G. (Bennett) Alexander, was born April 15, 1918, at Denmark, Ark. She was raised by her maternal grandmother, Clara Elizabeth Bennett, at Charleston, Ill., until age seven. Pauline received her education at Chicago, Ill.

In 1940, Pauline married Herman Appel. In 1978 their marriage was dissolved and Herman preceded her in death. Pauline made her home in Chicago and Elgin, Ill., Heron Lake, Windom and Mt. Lake.

In 1994 Pauline entered the Burns Manor Nursing Home in Hutchinson.

She was preceded in death by a daughter and son-in-law, Joyce and Richard Barron; and a granddaughter, Michelle Murga.

Survivors include six children, William Appel of Worthington; Dorothy (Don) Meyer of Windom; Don (Sally) Appel of Apple Valley; Barb Appel of Winona; Donna (Gary) Kotlarz of Hutchinson; and Elizabeth (Van) Villnow of East Bethel; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Helen Trout of Hanover Park, Ill.

Selma Anacker

Selma Anacker, 93, of Mt. Lake, formerly of Darfur, died Nov. 22, 1999, at the Good Samaritan Village in Mt. Lake.

Services were held Saturday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Darfur with Pastor Patricia Baglien officiating.

Pallbearers were Todd Fredin, Mark Fredin, Brian Fredin, Tim Mogler, Paul Fredin, Tracy Fredin and Jeffrey Fredin.

Interment was at the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Darfur.

Selma Christine Wallin was born Jan. 12, 1906, in Adrian Township, Watonwan County, to Oscar and Carrie (Larson) Wallin. She grew up and attended rural school near Darfur.

She married William G. Anacker in 1927. The couple made their home in Darfur operating Darfur implement until retiring in the early 1960s. She continued to live in Darfur until entering the Eventide Home in Mt. Lake in 1997.

Selma was a life-long member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and was active in the ladies aid. She was also a member of the Darfur "Garden Gate" Garden Club and the Darfur Senior Citizens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William, in 1977; twin grandsons, Matthew and David Fredin; a brother, Wilbert Wallin; and sisters, Della Adams, Mabel Post and Eloise Hill.

Survivors include a daughter, Marian (James) Fredin of Comfrey; three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Emma Schmid of Whittier, Calif.
