Harold Heide
Harold Heide, 69, of Mt. Lake died Nov. 22, 1999, at Mankato.
Services were held Friday at the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church in Mt. Lake with the Rev. Kenneth Unruh officiating.
Pallbearers were Dustin Heide, Nicholas Roth, Danae Heide, Matt Heide, Dale Heide Jr., Sara Roth, Johnna Heide and Jacque Heide, Drake Heide, Dylan Heide, Brandon Heide, Derek Heide, Tanner Heide and Nathanael Heide.
Special music was provided by Janice Schroeder, organist, and the Elmendorf Children’s Choir.
Harold J. Heide, son of Jacob D. and Elizabeth (Dick) Heide, was born Dec. 25, 1929, in Mt. Lake. He received his education at country schools in the Mt. Lake and Windom area and the Mt. Lake Bible School. Harold accepted the Lord in 1945, and he was baptized in 1946, at the Bethel Mennonite Church in Mt. Lake. He later joined the Evangelical Mennonite Brethren Church in Mt. Lake where he remained an active member. He served in voluntary service at St. Mary’s Hospital, where he met his wife.
In 1954, Harold married Sharon Shunk. They made their home in the Mt. Lake area, where Harold worked several jobs before retiring from Sanborn Fluid and Coleman Powermate in Springfield in 1997.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Heide of Mt. Lake; seven children, Mike (Kathi) Heide of Guttenburg, Iowa; Dale (Deb) Heide of Faribault; Nylynn Roth of St. Paul; Ken (Connie) Heide of Brandon, S.D.; Dan (Audra) Heide of Oakdale; Phil (Lisa) Heide of Alburqureque, N.M.; and Scott (Tirzah) of Sioux City, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; four brothers, Wilmer (MaJean) Heide of Butterfield; Kermit (Carol) Heide of Butterfield; Eldon (Marie) Heide of Yuba, Wis.; and Rick (Jetty) Heide of Bloomington; four sisters, Edna (Jerry) Erskine of Marysville, Wash.; Ellen Jean (Pete) Zielenski of Clifton, Va.; Diane (Roy) Farley of San Antonio, Texas; and Lauretta (Jim) Hagen of Ceylon.
Sylvia Hale
Sylvia Hale, 93, of St. James died Nov. 22, 1999, at the St. James Health Services Hospital in St. James.
Services were held Friday at the Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James with Pastor Ted Kunze and Vicar Dan Peterson officiating.
Special music was provided by Cecelia Kulseth, organist, and Allison Kulseth, vocalist.
Pallbearers were Robert (Bob) Zender, Warren Litynski, Richard Anderson, Dr. Donald Davis, Donald L.R. Anderson and Robert (Bob) Elman.
Interment was at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James.
Sylvia Anderson, daughter of Henning and Anna (Anderson) Anderson, was born Oct. 22, 1906, in St. James. She was raised in St. James and was a 1925 graduate of St. James High School. She continued her education at the Mankato School of Cosmetology, graduating in 1926.
She married Clarence Holte in 1928. Following their marriage, they lived in Butterfield where they operated a restaurant. After Clarence’s death in 1959, Sylvia moved back to St. James.
She married Harold Hale in 1973. Sylvia was employed in the dental office of Dr. Donald Davis for several years. She was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church in St. James. Harold died in 1990.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; sister, Lucille Jorgenson; and a brother, Selen Anderson.
Survivors include a son, John (Jack) Holte of Lake Charles, La.; and two grandchildren.
Alice Anderson
Alice K. Anderson, 85, of Barrington, N.J., died June 18, 1999, at West Jersey Hospital in Marlton, N.J.
Services were held June 22 at the First Presbyterian Church in Barrington.
Interment was at Haddonfield New Jersey Baptist Cemetery.
Alice was born March 27, 1914, in Philadelphia, Pa., to Phillip and Sara Mae (Heller) Kappler. When she was one-year-old the family moved to Barrington. She attended Barrington Elementary School and Haddon Heights N.J. High School graduating in 1932.
In 1937, she married Stokes Anderson. They resided in Barrington.
Alice was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Barrington where she attended the Women’s Association and Circle meetings. She also served on the memorial committee. She was the town historian and a charter member of the Historical Society, being instrumental in gathering information for a 75th anniversary commemorative book about the town’s history. She was asked to be in Barrington’s 4th of July parade as the citizen who has resided there the longest.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother.
Survivors include her daughter, Lois (Hal) Rainey of Mt. Lake; 2 granddaughters.
Cornelius Menssen
Cornelius (Cornie) Menssen, 97, of St. James died June 15, 1999, at St. James Health Services Hospital in St. James.
Services were held June 18 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in St. James with Pastor Martin Lopahs officiating.
Special music was provided by Joyce Monroe, organist, and Pastor and Mary Lopahs, vocalists.
Pallbearers were Corinne Ebbenga, Gretchen Romsdahl, Jason Janzen, Larry Menssen, Glen Menssen and Michael Menssen.
Honorary pallbearers were Kenneth Menssen, William Menssen, Leland Menssen, Wanda Menssen, Lesley Janzen and Bryan Ebbenga.
Interment was at Mt. Hope Cemetery in St. James.
Cornelius R. Menssen, son of Redelf and Gretke (Mehrings) Menssen, was born in Carolinensiel, Germany, on Aug. 30, 1901.
He was baptized in Germany. He came to America with his parents and lived in Illinois. In 1906, they moved to Iowa. He attended school in Palmer Iowa and then Wartburg College in Clinton, Iowa. In 1919, they moved to Oakland, Minn., and in 1927 to Mt. Lake.
In 1928, he married Frieda Grund. They farmed near Mt. Lake until 1944, when they moved to a farm near Butterfield. In 1967, they retired and moved to St. James.
Cornie was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Dennis; brothers, Henry and Herman; and a sister, Margrette (Meg).
Survivors include his sons, Walter (Helen) Menssen of Sherburn; Leslie (Beverly) Menssen; Donald (Mary Ann) Menssen, all of St. James; LeRoy (Jennie) Menssen of Estherville, Iowa; daughters, Darlene (Richard) Ebbenga; Karen (Lawrence) Janzen, all of Butterfield; and Gayle Mcleod of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 24 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
Edward Rathman
Edward Rathman, 47, of Bingham Lake, formerly of St. James, died Sept. 13, 1999, at St. James.
Services were held Friday at the St. James Catholic Church with Father Larry Brixius and Father Jim Berning officiating.
Pallbearers were Edward A. Rathman Jr., Ann Branstedt, Don Branstedt, Charles Wagner, Brian Rathman, Greg Rathman and Bill Rathman.
Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in St. James.
Edward A. Senior was born July 14, 1952, in St. James to Sylvester and Margie (Schiller) Rathman Sr. He attended school in St. James and in 1971, he married Cynthia Kay Ellanson. Following their marriage they lived in St. James where he worked as custodian for St. James Catholic Church for 15 years, at ST industries for 10 years and for Dodge Camper Sales.
He was a lifetime member of St. James Catholic Church and a former member of the St. James Fire Department and the Knights of Columbus.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margie; brothers, David and John; and a sister, Christine.
Survivors include his son, Edward A. Rathman Jr., of Bingham Lake; daughters, Ann (Don) Brandstedt of Windom; father, Sylvester Rathman of St. James; brothers and sisters, Gene and Lucille Rathman of Tallahasse, Fla.; Phyllis (Francis) Wagner of Ormsby; Raymond (Janette) Rathman of St. James; Jim (Pat) Rathman of St. James; Larry (Marion) Rathman of St. James; Doug (Kathy) Rathman of St. James; Don (Jeanne) Rathman of Tulsa, Okla.; Richard (Fay) Rathman of Nissawa; Sylevester Jr. (Berdell) Rathman of St. James; Paula (Conrad) DeJong of Stewartville; and Marlene (Richard) Fastenau of St. James.
