Gail E. Jacobson
Larry (Nancy) Jacobson of Saginaw is mourning the death of his mother Gail E. Jacobson. She died on Sun., Mar. 7, 2004, at Chris Jensen Health & Rehabilitation Center in Duluth. She was 85.

She was born in Eveleth and graduated from Eveleth High School in 1936. She was employed by the Duluth School District, retiring in 1984. Gail enjoyed gardening, dancing, and being with friends and family. She was a former member of First Lutheran Church in Duluth.

Gail was preceded in death by her parents, son Ronald in 1980, and her brother Eylar.

She is also survived by another son Darrell (Barbara) of Duluth, eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Burial in Grand Lake Township Cemetery in Twig.

Steven M. Johnson
Services will be held today, Thursday, for Steven M. Johnson of North Cloquet Road. He died suddenly Fri., Mar. 5, 2004, in Duluth. He was 46.

He was born in Duluth on Feb. 27, 1958 to Martin and Lorraine (Perlinger) Johnson. On Aug. 11, 1989 he married Katrina 'Trina' Albrecht. Steven was employed with Duluth Dodge working for the past three years as a vehicle reconditioner. The summer of 2003 he worked with the Super Stocks Pit Crew. He enjoyed rebuilding classic cars.

He is preceded in death by his mother Lorraine (1981), and brothers Bruce (1971) and Michael (2003).

Survivors include his wife Katrina of Proctor, children Steven B. (Laura) of Duluth, David M. of Two Harbors, and Jessica L. of Proctor; the twinkle in his eye, granddaughter Hailey, his father Martin E. and brother Jeffrey (Marion) of Duluth, several nieces and nephews and his furry friend Boots.

Visitation is from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service in Bell Brothers Jarvi-Dowd Funeral Home.

Joanne R. Mainella
Laurie Sheldon of Proctor is mourning the death of her mother Joanne R. Mainella of Duluth. She passed away Thurs., Mar. 4, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was 71.

Joanne was born in Duluth and graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1951. She went on to become an LPN and worked in the former Miller Hospital, now Miller Dwan Medical Center. Joanne married Frank Mainella on Nov. 7, 1953, in St. John's Catholic Church in Duluth, of which she was a lifetime member.

Joanne was preceded in death by her husband Frank in 1997, her parents, and a brother Ronald Olszewski.

She is also survived by another daughter Kathy (Scott) Maki of Duluth, six grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and one step great-grandchild.

Inurnment will be at Sunrise Memorial Park at a later date.

Janard (Jan) D. Bort
Janard (Jan) D. Bort, who grew up in the Proctor area and was a Proctor High School graduate, died Fri., Mar. 5, 2004. He was 63.

The Burnsville resident retired from Unisys Corp. He was a part time driver for Adaptive Sports and Charters for First Student Bus Company.

He is survived by wife Carol, sons David, Brian (Ellie) and Bobby, grandchildren Skyler and Emily Bort, brother Willard (Theo) Bort, sisters-in-law Joan Nelson, Julie Kolojeski, Denise (Stu) Stenberg and Suzie (Wes) Fredrickson, and also by other loving relatives and friends.

Interment will be in Duluth.

Jacob Harry Smith
Mary and Dale Nikko and their children Luke and Jack of Proctor are saddened by the death of their relative Jacob Harry Smith. The Duluth resident died Fri., Mar. 5, 2004, in Fairview University Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 17.

Jacob was a junior at Denfeld High School and on its debate team. He was involved in the Jr. ROTC, and served as leader of the orienteering group.

Jacob is also survived by his parents Pamela and Bruce Smith, a brother Zachary, grandparents LeRoy and Therese Hendrickson of Duluth, Carol Sumpter of Eden Prarie, Harry and Christy Smith of Hopkins, and other aunts, uncles and cousins.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. today, Thursday, in St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church.

Astrid J. Envall
Astrid J. Envall of Edgewood Vista, who had been a Proctor resident most of her life, died Sun., Mar. 7, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center Hospice. She was 92.

Astrid was born July 12, 1911 in Madison, Minn. to Oluf and Olga (Olson) Bakken. She was a homemaker. She married Bert Envall on June 2, 1934 in Proctor. She enjoyed playing cards.

Astrid was preceded in death by her husband Bert in 1979, son Lloyd in 1998, daughter Eileen in 2003, grandson Michael Envall, one sister and three brothers.

Survivors include a daughter Judy L. (Robert 'Bob') Backstrom of Oakdale, sons Raymond 'Ray' (Theresa) Envall of Proctor and Delbert 'Del' Envall of Midway Twp., a sister Viola 'Vi' Ojala of Babbitt, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 10 until the 11 a.m. service Sat., Mar. 13, in Immanuel Lutheran Church, 614 Second St., Proctor. The Reverend Mark A. Osthus officiating. Burial will be in Oneota Cemetery.

Suzanne Regina Hedberg
Daniel Hedberg of Proctor is mourning the death of his mother Suzanne Regina Hedberg. She died Wed., Mar. 10, 2004 in her Martin Rd. home. She was 65.

Suzanne was born in Duluth to Clarence and Laura (Krause) Abrahamson. She was a graduate of Duluth Cathedral High School and received a Radiological Tech. Degree from the College of St. Scholastica. She worked at St. Mary's Medical Center for 39 years. She was also treasurer of Rice Lake Township for 26 years. She married Raymond Hedberg on Oct. 28, 1961.

She is preceded in death by her husband Raymond, who died in 1996.

Suzanne is also survived by three other children, two brothers, nine grandchildren, and a great-grandson Dominic.

Visitation will be held 1 p.m. with services at 3 p.m. Sat., Mar. 20, 2004, in the Dougherty Funeral Home.

Erwin Karl Wing
Karen (Jim) Patnaude of Proctor and Amy (Jim) Johnson of Solway Township and Paula (Bill) Berg of Hermantown are mourning the death of their father, Erwin Karl Wing, of Duluth. He died Tues., Mar. 9, 2004 in St. Mary's Hospice. He was 70.

He was born in Duluth and graduated from Denfeld High School in 1953. Erwin started as a telegrapher with the DWP Railroad and retired as a clerk in 1996 after 38 years of service. Erwin married Betty Weber on May 2, 1959, in Parkers Prairie, Minn. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of Christ the King. He enjoyed breakfast with the Raleigh Street men's group, volunteering at the Great Lakes Aquarium, loved fishing, camping and traveling with Betty.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is also survived by his wife Betty, a sister Sharon (Roger) Bienusa of Staples, brothers Sherman (Susan) of Ariz., Bob of Minong, Wis. and Donald of Duluth, his special grandchildren Sarah and Katie Berg, Jason and Jessica Patnaude, and Bradley, Eric and Laura Johnson, and several nieces and nephews.

Burial in Oneota Cemetery.

Steven Craig Kanios
Steven Craig Kanios, who graduated from Proctor High School in 1972 and worked for the DM&IR in Proctor, died, Thurs., Mar. 18, 2004, in his Duluth home following complications from diabetes and heart problems. He was 50.

He was born in Duluth, on Nov. 10, 1953 to Regina and Ted Kanios. He had attended Bay View Elementary School and graduated from PHS. He had also attended the Vocational-Technical School in Duluth. He had driven trucks for Manions Wholesale in Superior. Steven was active in sports for many years. He also enjoyed camping and fishing with family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father in 1976, and his grandparents.

He is survived by his mother Regina (Kanios) Bailey, step-father Ward Bailey, sisters Dr. Linda (Ken) Smith of Hartford, Wis., and Lisa (Allan) Wicklund of Iowa.

Private services were held for the immediate family Monday. Burial in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Cynthia Jean Glesner
Brad Glesner of Proctor is saddened by the death of his sister Cynthia Jean Glesner. She died March 12, 2004 in her Dallas home after a courageous battle with brain cancer. She was 32.

The former Duluth resident was born in Duluth to Robert S., and Louise (Nelson) Glesner. She graduated from Duluth Central High School in 1990 and worked in health care both in Duluth and Dallas. Cyndi enjoyed playing all sports, especially hockey where she played with the UMD Lady Bulldogs when they were a club team in the '80's.

Cyndi was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents.

She is survived by two other brothers, two nieces, and two nephews. Services were Saturday in Dallas.

Lucille C. Galbraith
A memorial service will be held today, Thurs., Mar. 25, 2004, for Lucille C. Galbraith of Proctor. She died Tues., Mar. 23, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center surrounded by her loving family. She was 67.

Lucille was born Feb. 22, 1937 in Tower, Minn. to Wayne and Lila (White) Kultala. On Nov. 24, 1956, she married Edward C. Galbraith in Duluth. As a long time Proctor resident, Lucille worked for three local businesses for several years. She would say though her most difficult job was being the wife of an over-the-road truck driver for 35 years.

Lucille was preceded in death by her parents and stepfather Robert White.

She is survived by her husband of 47 years Ed, son Jeffrey (Kristin Hergert) of Eden Prairie, daughters Paula (Ron) Peterson of Charlottesville, Va. and Amy (Keith) Terwey of Duluth, grandchildren Haley and John Kucharski of Proctor, sister Doris Carlon of Tower, and a brother James Kultala of Minneapolis.

The service will be held today at 1 p.m. at the Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel, 4100 Grand Avenue in Duluth. Following the service, a reception will be held at the Proctor Moose Club at 3 p.m.
