Larry Armstrong

Larry A. Armstrong, 51, Shakopee, died at his home on November 30, 1998 as a result of cancer.

Armstrong was born on May 23, 1947 in Mankato, the son of Allan and Doris (Hemingway) Armstrong. He was employed as a project planner at Datakey Incorporated.

Survivors include "special angel" Linda Theis; son Robert and wife Mary and granddaughters Bria and Anna of Mankato; son Troy of Gaylord; their mother Gail of Gaylord; his mother Doris Armstrong of Cannon Falls; sisters Connie Dulas and husband Eddie of Waconia, Mary Stephenson of Apple Valley, Dee Ann Schmidt and husband Dean of Crookston; brother Jay and wife Diane of Hastings; seven nieces and four nephews. He was preceded in death by his father and nephew Nathan Schmidt.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 3-7 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Cavanaugh-McNearney Funeral Home in Shakopee with The Reverend Paul Cloeter officiating. Private family interment will take place.

The Cavanaugh-McNearney Funeral Home in Shakopee is in charge of arrangements.

Alice Waslie
Alice Martha Viola Waslie, 91, Cannon Falls, died on Friday morning, November 27, 1998 at the Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Alice was born on October 3, 1907 in Goodhue County, the daughter of Martin and Hulda (Leyon) Wagner. She attended country school, and later married Einer Waslie on June 29, 1927 in Minneapolis. She was employed at Point of Sales in Cannon Falls for several years.

She was a member of the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. She also loved to play bingo.

Einer died on August 23, 1963.

She is survived by her daughters, Hazel Morinelli of Exton, PA and Beverly (James) Simanski of White Bear Lake; daughter-in-law, Joyce Waslie of Cannon Falls; son-in-law, Donald Thompson of Cannon Falls; 16 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Effie Nelson-Schieffer of Milwaukee, WI and Dorothy Kloss of St. Paul; sister-in-law, Doris Wagner of Cannon Falls; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Einer; daughter, E. Arlene Thompson; sons, Darreld and Merlyn Waslie; brother, Lawrence Wagner; and sister, Edna Otterness.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at First English Lutheran Church, with Pastor Phillip Ruud officiating. Interment was at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.

Pallbearers were grandchildren, Steven, Mark, Lee and Matthew Simanski, Douglas Thompson and Bruce Waslie.

Alice Wilson
Alice Cornelia Wilson, 94, Cannon Falls, died on Friday afternoon, November 27, 1998 at the Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Alice was born on June 24, 1904 in Britton, SD, the daughter of Torger and Berthe (Lea) Gronseth. She attended grade school in Pleasant Valley. Later she attended South Dakota Teachers College in Aberdeen, SD. Alice taught rural school for six years.

On September 12, 1929 she married Charles Wilson. They farmed in Britton, SD, for about eight years until moving to Cannon Falls in 1944. Charles died July 1, 1973.

Alice was employed as a cook for nine years at the Mineral Springs Sanatorium in Cannon Falls, and at the girls dormitory at Carleton College in Northfield for seven years. She later was employed as head cook at the Island View Lodge near Brainerd for 22 years. Alice retired in 1978. She enjoyed playing cards, reading, crocheting, doing crossword puzzles, playing Scrabble, and traveling when she was able. Prior to residing at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center, she lived at Park Street Apartments in Cannon Falls.

She is a past member of the American Legion Post #142 Auxiliary and the VFW Post #4452 Auxiliary.

She is survived by her four children, Lyle (Phyllis) and Thomas "Lee" (Lila), all of Cannon Falls, Joan (Al) Bradley of Sun City, AZ and June (Tom) Wolfe of Tuscon, AZ; 15 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four brothers, a sister and a grandson.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Monday, Nov. 30 at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls, with Father David Shannon officiating. Interment was at the church cemetery. Memorials are preferred to donor's choice.

Pallbearers were her grandsons, Michael, Steve, Gary, Todd and Joe Wilson, David Lind, John, Jim and Jay Wilson, and Todd Wolfe. Honorary pallbearers were her granddaughters, Jean Malloy, Shari Wilson, Janet Schauer, Mary Olson and Paula Greer.

Marian Edlund
Marian Irene Edlund, 84, Cannon Falls, died on Friday evening, November 27, 1998 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Marian was born on June 11, 1914 in Cannon Falls, the daughter of James Alexander and Emma Julia (Erickson) Filson. She grew up in Cannon Falls, and later graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1932, and was class president. She then went to teacher's training and taught rural school for seven years.

On June 18, 1941 she married Swan G. Edlund at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. The couple farmed in Leon Township. Marian moved to Cannon Falls from the farm four years ago.

She is a Past Matron and former secretary of the Order of the Eastern Star, Zion Chapter #6 in Cannon Falls. She was an active member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls, Bible study and quilting group. She had served as treasurer and Sunday school teacher at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church. Marian had served as an election judge, a member of the Golden Agers Seniors Club, and was involved with an extension homemaker's group in Leon Township. She enjoyed antiques, traveling and being with people.

She is survived by a daughter, Barbara (Kenneth) Olson of Schaumberg, IL; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Stephanie; sister-in-law, Irene Schmidt of Rochester; and four nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Swan; daughter, Marilyn; and an infant brother.

Funeral service was held on Monday, Nov. 30 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, with Pastor Gary Titusdahl officiating. Interment followed at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. An Eastern Star service was held on Sunday at the funeral home.

Pallbearers were John and Pat Iverson, Dan, Nick and Luke Ross and James Edlund.

Loretta Debes
Loretta Mary Debes, 83, Cannon Falls, died on Tuesday evening, November 24, 1998 at the Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Loretta was born on October 21, 1915 in Hastings, the daughter of Louis and Clara (Greiger) Bennett. For 37 years she was a nurse's aide at the hospitals in Hastings, Wabasha and Cannon Falls. While at the Hastings State Hospital, she was also a cook supervisor. She retired in about 1979.

She was married to Leonard J. Debes on April 23, 1982 at St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls, where she has been a member and served with the CCW.

She is survived by her husband, Leonard; children, Betty (Don) Collins of Hastings, Tom Freiermuth of Apple Valley and Jerry (Jeanette) Freiermuth of Conway, AR; step-son, Allen (Babetta) Debes of Walker; 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren; brother, Richard (Elsa) Bennett of Mendota Heights; sisters, Helen (Edwin) Dunk of Warda, TX, and Florence (Edward) Halgenseth of Wichita, KS; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Clarence Freiermuth and William Moorhouse; son, Richard Freiermuth; infant daughter, Clara Rose Freiermuth; brothers, Arnold and Bernard Bennett; and sisters, Ruth Harris, Myrtle Oliver, Ethel Zempel and Marie Murray.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Friday, Nov. 27 at St. Pius V Catholic Church, with Father David Shannon celebrating. Interment was at the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Daniel and Allen Debes, Dennis and Michael Freiermuth, Ronald, Michael and Thomas Collins. Honorary pallbearers were Marian Beissel, Mary Johnson, Ruth Hurt, Mary Beyer, Nancy Hovel and Hedy Kelly.

Gilbert Flom
Gilbert Edward Flom, 89, Redding, CA, died Nov. 5, 1998.

He was born Oct.28, 1909, near Minot, ND, the son of Iver and Anna Flom who homesteaded in that area. When he was 8, his family returned to the family farm near Sogn, MN. He was educated in Minnesota and moved to Los Angeles, CA, in 1935. A year later he moved to San Francisco where he lived until retiring from Coca Cola. He was married to Pauline Eby in 1948. Upon retirement, he moved to Anderson, CA, on the Sacramento River where he could enjoy fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife, Pauline; sons Dan and Jon, six grandchildren and one great-grandson; two sisters, Lillian Cunningham and Florence Underwood of Bakersfield, CA; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepfather John Jolstad, two infant sisters and brothers Lavern, Arnold and LeRoy.

Funeral services were held at Lawncrest Chapel, Redding, CA, on Nov. 10. Interment was at Lawncrest Memorial Park.
