She loved to play the piano and passed her love of music to her family. In her younger days, Rita was an avid gardener specializing in growing roses. She was proud of her ancestry and if you could mimic a Scottish brogue, dance the highland fling or play a bagpipe, you became a best friend. Rita also loved animals and in particular, her daughter Joyce's dog, "Shadow."

Rita was born on February 19, 1908 in Santa Cruz, St. Elizabeth Parish, Jamaica. She was the daughter of John Robert Miles and Rosa Maude Williams who were of Scottish and English heritage and whose families had arrived as colonists in Jamaica in the 17th century. She was the youngest of 11 children. Rita was raised in Kingston with her aunt and uncle and attended boarding school. At the age of 17 she emigrated to Toronto, Canada where she joined her mother and elder siblings who arrived in Canada in 1913. The family later moved to Detroit, MI.

Rita married Ralph Cuson in Detroit, MI, during the Depression and they raised two daughters, Joyce and Alex Sandra, in Dearborn, MI. The couple divorced. Rita held several jobs with government agencies as a stenographer, the last of which was for the City of Dearborn, a position from which she retired. She retired to Atlanta, and later, Florida.

In 1996 Rita moved to Cannon Falls and resided at Park Street Apartments. Olivene Juneau was a dear and special friend to her. She loved the people in Cannon Falls of whom she often was quoted as saying, "I have never met such wonderful people anywhere. Everyone is so helpful and nice. I love living here."
