John Stocker

John F. Stocker, 71, St. Paul, formerly of Cannon Falls, died on Friday, December 18, 1998, at St. John's Hospital in Maplewood.

John was born on April 11, 1927 in Clear Lake, WI. The son of John H. Stocker and Katherine (Schuna) Stocker. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1944 and served in the Naval Construction Battalion (Sea Bees) in the Pacific during WWII.

On October 6, 1946 he married Sylvia Selma Louise Moske. They lived in South St. Paul, then Almora, MN, St. Paul, Cannon Falls (1970-1977) and again returning to So. St. Paul. He retired from Piledrivers Local 1847 at the age of 60. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family and friends. He was a member of Gallagher-Hanson Post 295 in South St. Paul. A member of Piledrivers Local 1847 having held office in this Union and also served as business agent. He was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church in South St. Paul.

He is survived by his children: Shirley (Dick) Anderson of Garrison, Steven (Sharon) Stocker of South St. Paul, formerly of Cannon Falls, Kathleen (Gary) Kosse of South St. Paul, Anita (Don) Rapp of Cannon Falls, Joan (Steve) Pickard of Wyoming. His grandchildren: Barbara (Brian) Johnson of Rogers, MN, Dawn, Laurie Anderson of St. Charles, MO, Rich Anderson of Garrison, Steve Jr. (Wendy) Stocker of River Falls, WI, formerly of Cannon Falls, Stacie (fiancé Scott Banks) Stocker of Cannon Falls, Shawna (boyfriend Aaron Burdick) Stocker of South St. Paul, formerly of Cannon Falls, John (fiancée Robyn Nelson) Kosse of South St. Paul, Matthew Kosse of South St. Paul, Brian, Mike and Becky Forsell of Cannon Falls, Joel Zimmerman Jr. of Cannon Falls, Diana, Zach, Brandon and Christina Pickard of Wyoming; step-grandchildren Tony (Christie) Rapp of Rolling Stone, Willy Rapp of Cannon Falls. Great-grandchildren: Christina and Michael Johnson, Brady Stocker and Cody Rapp. Sisters, Josie Schnell of Butte, MT, Frieda Hollatz of Minneapolis; aunts, uncle, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.

He was preceded in death by his wife Sylvia.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, Dec. 22, at 10 a.m. at Concordia Lutheran Church in South St. Paul, Rev. Neldo Schmidt officiating. Pallbearers were his grandchildren.

Lynnea Peterson
Word was received this past week of the death of Lynnea Miller Peterson of Poland, OH. Lynnea died of cancer at her home on December 17, 1998. She was 49 years old.

Lynnea is survived by her husband, Rev. Daniel Peterson; daughter, Anne Marie; mother, Ruth Miller Trelstad of New Brighton; sister and brother-in-law, Chari and Phil Hansen; and nephew Steven of Fridley. She is preceded in death by her father, Donald Miller, who had farmed in the White Rock area.

The funeral service was held in Ohio on December 22. A memorial service is being planned in January to accommodate friends and relatives in Minnesota.

Selmer Hagen
Selmer Oscar Hagen, 80, Apple Valley, died Sat., Dec. 19, 1998, at Veterans Nursing home in Minneapolis.

He was born Feb. 8, 1918, in Cannon Falls, the son of Austin and Anna Marie Hagen. He attended schools in Cannon Falls. He spent three years with the 11th Airborne Division in World War II, and was discharged in 1946. He then spent 22 years in the Navy, after which he worked for the State Highway Dept. and as a school bus driver for District 196. He was married to Marjorie French in 1965 in Bloomington. She now survives. He was a life charter member of Apple Valley American Legion Post 1776.

Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; three sons, Chris and his wife Melissa, Savage, Sam and his fiance Vicki, Rosemount, and Donald; daughters Judy and Julie; stepdaughter Paulette Vitello and her husband Chuck, California; stepsons Henry Schmode and his wife Diane, So. Dak., and Douglas Schmode and his wife Sue, Rosemount.

Funeral services were held Tues., Dec. 22, at White Funeral Home, Apple Valley. Pallbearers were John Brezinka, Don Schiffman, John Yeager, Roger Andre, Warren Brabrandt and E. J. Herman. Honorary pallbearers were Fred Bemar and Rod Bushee.

Theodore Westman
Theodore "Ted" Westman, 94, a native of Cannon Falls, died Dec. 7, 1998 at Belle Woods Nursing Home in Ann Arbor, MI.

He was born Nov. 27, 1904, in Cannon Falls, the son of Charles and Melvina Westman. He graduated from Cannon Falls High School in 1923. He played basketball and football at CFHS, where he also played cornet in the band and played for dances in the area. His friends included Burt Olson, Jake Hagen and Sid Freeman.

In 1936, in Grafton, ND, he married Echo Westman, and she now survives. He was employed as an accountant at the University of Michigan Food Stores. He was very active in the West Side Methodist Church, the Ann Arbor Elks Club and the Thursday Men's Club. He was an avid U of Michigan football fan for many years, an avid gardener and an outdoorsman. His outdoor activities included hiking, backpacking and fishing. He also wrote poetry and made wood furniture.

He was preceded in death by his brothers, Wendel and Charles; sisters, Eva, Esther and Ruby. Survivors include his wife, Echo; daughter Penny (Tom) Sibert; son, Robert (Arlene) Westman; grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A memorial service was held in Ann Arbor on Dec. 12.

Irene Kimmes
Irene A. Bauer Kimmes, 76, Hastings, died at Regions Hospital, St. Paul, on Tues., Dec. 15, 1998, as result of injuries suffered in an auto accident Dec. 14.

She was born July 19, 1922 in Douglas Township, the daughter of Isadore and Anna Fox. She was a retired clerk and cook. Her last employer was King's Place in Miesville. Irene was a volunteer for Regina Hospital and St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church. She enjoyed golf as a hobby.

She is survived by a daughter, Karen (Eugene) Cox, Chanhassen; sons Allen (Robin) Bauer, Hager City, WI, and Perry (Laurel) Bauer, Columbia Heights; sister, Janet Fox, Hastings; brother, Donald Fox, Cannon Falls; 10 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Alois Bauer and Anthony Kimmes; sister, Helen Sorenson.

Funeral services were held Sat., Dec. 19, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Miesville, Rev. Fr. Marvin Klaers and Rev. Ft. Stephen Beauclair, OSB, officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were Del Bauer, Bill Bauer, Al Bauer Jr., Shawn Bauer, Andrew Bauer and Jeff Cox. Memorials are preferred to Caring and Sharing Hands. Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Gerald Erickson
Gerald James Erickson, 67, Roseville, died suddenly on Dec. 2, 1998 at his home.

He was born in Milwaukee, WI, on Jan. 25, 1931, the son of Herbert and Mary Erickson. After his mother died when he was 8, he came to live with relatives in Cannon Falls, including the Elmer Burggrens, Bill and Clara Erickson, Ed and Anna Erickson. He went to country school in Cannon Falls and his years on the farm here were some of his fondest memories. His survivors include a cousin, Wayne Erickson of Cannon Falls.

He served in World War II and later became an electrical engineer. He married Marcy Wargovick at an American Legion dance in Robbinsdale, while on leave from the Air Force. They married Feb. 22, 1952. He retired as a consulting engineer for NCR Comten.

Family was Jerry's highest priority. He and Marcy had six children. After he retired at age 58, he and his wife traveled extensively.

Funeral services were held in Roseville with burial at Fort Snelling.

Alma Hagen

Alma Lenora Hagen, 81, of South St. Paul, formerly of Kenyon, died on Saturday, December 26, 1998 at the United Hospital in St. Paul.

Alma was born on September 12, 1917 in Kenyon to Oscar and Bertha (Bakkethun) Ramstad. She was baptized and confirmed at Holden Lutheran Church. Alma graduated from Kenyon High School. After graduation, she moved to Cannon Falls until 1960, when she moved to South St. Paul. While living in Cannon Falls, Alma started working for Armour Foods in South St. Paul and continued working for Armour until 1979, when she retired. Alma was living in South St. Paul at the time of her death.

She is survived by three children: Donald Hagen of South St. Paul, Judy and Mark Shafer of West St. Paul, and Julie and Marty Erickson of South St. Paul. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Christopher and Michelle Hagen, Daniel and Tami Hagen, Christopher and Janelle Shafer, Todd Shafer, Nikki and Charlie Juelich, Kim and Brad Ramirez, and Jason Erickson; five great-grandchildren, Brady, Tanner, Andrew, Taran and Camden; one brother, Donald Ramstad of Zumbrota, several nieces and nephews and special friend, Dominic.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, Ruben, Clifford, Harland and Herman Ramstad, and one sister, Eva Ramstad.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 30 at Holden Lutheran Church in rural Kenyon with The Rev. Michael Lockerby officiating. Interment was at Holden Lutheran Cemetery.

Gil Gilbertson

Elwood "Gil" Gilbertson, 77, Farmington, died Feb. 2, 1999, of heart failure in Sun City , AZ.

He was born May 18, 1921, in Cooperstown, ND. He attended schools there, and at Lake Park, and also the University of Minnesota. He married Delores Keogh on June 19, 1943, in Perham.

He was a high school ag teacher, and owned and operated Gil's Farm Service, Rolling Hills Farm, West View Acres, and King Grain of Faribault.

Gil was civic minded, and his list of involvements included chairmanship of the Sanford Hospital Building Fund which raised $375,000 in 14 weeks. He also helped establish the chamber of commerce, was active on the Farmington Lutheran Church Board and was one of the organizers of the Farmington Centennial. He was a member of the Lions Club.

He and his wife Todie enjoyed traveling, being with people, spending their winters in Arizona and their family.

Survivors include his wife, Delores; daughters Barbra Boyken, St. Croix Falls, Nancee Davidson, Lincolnshire IL, and Gail Hubbell, North Platte, NE; sister, Shirley Bergeson, Belen, NM; brothers, Ronald, Farmington, and Roger, Fargo, ND; six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Mon., Feb. 8, at Farmington Lutheran Church. Pallbearers were Douglas Gilbertson, Jon Boyken, Steven Boyken, Greg Davidson, Liz Davidson and Randy Petrofske. Interment was at Corinthians Cemetery, Farmington. White Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
