Doris Lellman

A Cannon Falls native, Mrs. Earl M. Lellman, the former Doris Skog, died at her home in Forest Lake Saturday, February 13, 1999, at the age of 83. A memorial service was held Tuesday in Faith Lutheran Church, Forest Lake.

She was the daughter of Julius and Anna Skog and grew up on their farm east of Cannon Falls. She graduated as valedictorian from Cannon Falls High School in the class of 1933.

She graduated from St. Olaf College in 1937, taught high school English and Latin in Mohall, ND, and then in Forest Lake where she met her husband.

In 1947 they purchased the Forest Lake Times and she served as local news editor. After selling the Times in 1968, they moved part-time to Florida where she served for 20 years as a reference librarian in the Ormond Beach public library.

The couple observed their 57th wedding anniversary five days before her death from acute leukemia.

She is survived by her husband; three children, Deirdre (Howard) Olson of Prior Lake, Mark (Lisa) of Minneapolis and Bruce (Regina) of Portland, OR; six grandchildren, Chad, Aimee and Anna Olson and Leah, Heidi and Matthias Lellman; four sisters, Marlys Nelson of Welch, LaVine Stauning of Chandler, Texas, Verlaine Skog of Minneapolis, and Muriel Lindholm of Goodhue; and two sisters-in-law, Frances Warner of Forest Lake and Gloria Skog of Cannon Falls.

Harold Severson
Harold Clarence Severson, 87, Kenyon, died on Friday, February 12, 1999 at the Kenyon Sunset Home.

Harold was born on July 28, 1911 in Kenyon to Severt and Magna Julia (Berg) Severson. After graduating from Kenyon High School, Harold attended Hamline University. Harold got his start in the newspaper business back in 1929 as a linotype operator at the Kenyon Leader. After Hamline University, he took a job at the Kenyon Post Office for a short time before he began working at the old Kenyon News. Harold left Kenyon to work for a paper in Doland, SD. It was at Doland that he met and married Ruth Wandell on June 12, 1937, a union that lasted more than 61 years. The Seversons moved from South Dakota to Texas in 1937 where Harold worked on the weekly Beeville BeePicayune. After five years he left for jobs in San Antonio, Nashville and Chicago. He then free-lanced for several years before landing in Rochester in the early 1950s. He was a free-lance writer and photographer for the Rochester Post-Bulletin on and off for over 25 years, author of 20 books which includes "We Bring You Kenyon," a book written for the city's 100th birthday. He has written over 150 brochures, edited and written for numerous weeklies, Town and Country editor for the Post-Bulletin and was honored as Kenyon Citizen of the Year in 1989. He also served several terms on the Kenyon Education School Board, Sunday school teacher and member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church of Kenyon. Harold also received several individual honors and awards for which he was very proud of.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Ethel "Ruth" Severson of Kenyon; son Harold "Sandy" W. Severson of Cannon Falls; daughters, Dianne H. Severson Wright and her husband, Harry of Wanamingo, Christine G. Severson Lingk and her husband Leo of Rochester, and Kathy Severson Hogy and her husband Jerry of Redwood Falls. He is also survived by six grandchildren, David and Kevin Wright, Travis Severson, Sarah, Christopher and Amy Hogy; two great-grandchildren, Halea Wright and Parker Wright and sister Adeline Severson Taylor of Faribault. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Sanford and Ray Severson and one daughter in infancy. Active casket bearers were David Wright, Travis Severson, Kevin Wright, Gib Cake, Harry Wright and Jerry Hogy.

Honorary casket bearers were Tom Severson, Craig Severson, Leo Lingk, Allen Wandell, Joe Deer, Zane Mason, John Minnick, David Shult, Richard Shult, Mark Severson and Adrian Severson.

Funeral services were held on Monday, February 15, 1999 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in Kenyon with The Rev. Guy Redfield officiating. Interment was at the Kenyon Cemetery.

Fred De Money

Former Montana Tech president Fred W. De Money, 78, died Sunday, Sept. 27, 1998, at a Butte, Montana hospital.

He was born Nov. 25, 1919, in Oak Park, Ill. He received a BS degree in fire protection engineering from Illinois Institute of Technology, and a masters and Ph.D degree in physical metallurgy from the University of Minnesota. He worked as an engineer for various businesses and in 1972 became president of Montana College of Mineral Science and Technology and proudly held that position until his retirement in 1985.

Fred married Cannon Falls native Ione Edstrom on June 3, 1944, in Cannon Falls. She now survives. Other survivors include daughters and sons in law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, two sisters, numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Fred De Money in 1957.

Memorial services were held Oct. 2 in Montana.

Alton Anderson

Alton Herbert Anderson, 88, Cannon Falls, died on Saturday evening, January 2, 1999 at the Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls, where he has been residing since April 1987.

Alton was born on April 22, 1910 in Cannon Falls Township, the son of Ole O. and Alma (Olson) Anderson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Vasa Lutheran Church.

Alton married Lea Etta Kurtz on October 8, 1938. He farmed in the Vasa area until they moved in to Cannon Falls in 1950. Alton enjoyed the outdoors and gardening.

Lea Etta died on February 10, 1969.

He is survived by his children, Sharon Chermack of Salem, OR, Dean (Gloria) Anderson of Cannon Falls, Sharyl (Milt) Vanerstrom of Minot, ND and Terri (Dan) Potts of LaMoure, ND; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lea Etta; three brothers, Arthur, Winfred and Delmer Anderson; and four sisters, Ethel Anderson, Pearl Johnson, Lily Johnson and Irene Ekstrom-Schaar.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 7 at 2 p.m. at the Vasa Lutheran Church, with Pastor Michael Dobbins officiating. Interment will follow at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Thursday from 1-2 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Donald and Russell Anderson, Virgil and Kermit Ekstrom, Tim and Tom Kurtz.

Karen Boyum
Karen B. Boyum, 55, rural Northfield, died Sunday, January 3, 1999 at her home.

She was born November 11, 1943 at Cannon Falls, the daughter of Kenneth and Beatrice (Larson) Ohnstad. She attended the Cannon Falls elementary schools and graduated from high school in 1961. On October 5, 1968, she married Kenneth Boyum at the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. She resided in the Cannon Falls and Northfield areas her entire life. As a young woman, she was employed at West Publishing for 10 years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Northfield.

She is survived by her husband Kenneth; one son Kendall of Burnsville; one daughter Kimberly Boyum of St. Louis Park and her fiancé Doug Mars; three sisters, Leah (Melroy) Hokanson of Cannon Falls, Pauline (Jerry) Denn of Hastings and Janice (Rush) Rushing of California; three brothers, Ken (Edna) Ohnstad of Cannon Falls, Darwin (Patty) Ohnstad of Cannon Falls and Gary Ohnstad of Minneapolis. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother Keith and infant sister Darlene.

Funeral service was at 1 p.m., Wednesday, January 6, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Northfield with Pastor Leslie Svendsen officiating. Interment was at Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield.

Pallbearers were Melroy Hokanson, Mitch Hokanson, Mark Hokanson, Eric Ohnstad, Ben Boyum and Doug Mars.

Honorary pallbearers were Jenny Ohnstad, Rick Ohnstad, Rachel Boyum, Jesse Ohnstad and Jenny Busa.

Amy Quackenbush
Amy E. Quackenbush, 102, died Wednesday, December 30, 1998 at Our Lady of the Angels Nursing Home in Cannon Falls, were she had resided since March of 1989.

Amy Eunice Tabor was born September 16, 1896 to James Tabor and Mariah Jane Jones Tabor. She attended country schools and after the 8th grade she moved in with the superintendent so she could attend school in Spring Valley. She helped with the superintendent's eight children and did housekeeping in turn for her room and board. In her 10th grade she moved with the superintendent to Browns Valley, and attended school there. After her 10th grade her father thought she had had enough education for a woman and was told to come home.

At the age of 15 she met her husband-to-be at an ice cream and strawberry social. On September 14, 1914 she married Lambert W. Quackenbush in a simple ceremony at the Congregational Church parsonage. After their marriage Lambert and Amy moved to a small farm and started their life together. To this union seven children were born - Virginia, Dorothy, Lyman, Robert, Constance, Larry and Gloria.

During the depression they moved into town and Lambert went to work for the W.P.A. which was a government subsidized program. In 1933 they moved back to a small farm and in 1947 they moved back to town for the last time. Amy at that time went to work for the local dry cleaner as a silk finisher.

She is survived by one son Robert and his wife Arlean of Austin; three daughters, Virginia Leutink of Northfield, Constance Andre of Lincoln, NE, and Gloria (Mrs. Larry) Strain of Cannon Falls. She is also survived by a daughter-in-law Patty Quackenbush of Huntington, WV, 17 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren and many great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lambert in 1964, two sons, Lyman and Larry, and a daughter, Dorothy. Also two grandchildren, 10 brothers and four sisters.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 2, 1999 at Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. James Ross officiating. Brian, David and Richard Bailey, Bradley and Matthew Strain and James Quackenbush were casket bearers. Burial was in Frankford Cemetery near Spring Valley.

Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home, Spring Valley was in charge of arrangements.

Jerry Soulis
Gerald William "Jerry" Soulis, 59, Cannon Falls and formerly of Oakdale, died suddenly on Saturday afternoon, January 2, 1999 at the Cannon Falls Community Hospital.

Jerry was born on May 10, 1939 in St. Paul, the son of William and Emmeline (Adams) Soulis. He grew up in St. Paul and graduated from Johnson High School in 1957.

He married Karen Zell on May 11, 1963 at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church in St. Paul. He was currently employed by the Bergquist Company in Prescott, WI.

Jerry really enjoyed setting up at local flea markets and going to garage sales. He loved the outdoors, including hunting and camping. They have been camping at the Cannon Falls Campground for many years. He also enjoyed wood carving.

He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Karen; his children, Rick (Judie) Soulis and Becky (Frank) Hauer, all of Lindstrom; his grandchildren, Ashley and Andrew; and many other loving family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral service was held on Wednesday, January 6 at 11 a.m. at the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Phillip Ruud officiating. Interment will be at a later date.

Active pallbearers were Gordon Birkholz, DuWayne Smith, Ernie Roeber, Gary Lindstrom, Chuck Walek and Jim Branch.
