Carroll Bestul
Carroll Victor Bestul, 79, Dennison, died at Three Links Care Center in Northfield on Jan. 11, 1999.

He was born Nov. 12, 1919, in Goodhue County, the son of Carl and Edel (Bakken) Bestul. He graduated from Kenyon High School in 1938. He married Phyllis Johnson on April 6, 1942 at the Dennison Lutheran Church parsonage. They bought his parents' farm and began dairy farming. In 1954 they moved to town and he went to work at Armour Meat in St. Paul. In 1968 he started work at St. Olaf, and cared for the science center there until his retirement in 1991.

He and his wife were custodians for the church and Carroll mowed and trimmed the church lawn. He enjoyed gardening, feeding birds and watching sports. Family was very important to Carroll. He loved holidays when his family could all be together. He liked to cook, especially lefse. He had a wonderful sense of humor and was full of practical jokes. His hearty laugh and twinkle in the eye will be long remembered and missed.

He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; five daughters, Karen Nord, Northfield, Lana (Roy) Good, Faribault, Linda (Bruce) McKinnon, Northfield, Victoria (Steven) Gergen, Randolph, and Kim Sydnes, Randolph; two sons, Terry (Jennifer), and Todd (Lisa), all of Dennison; two sisters, Miriam Bjelland, Kenyon, and Marna Walker, Zumbrota; one brother, Lyle Bestul, Northwood, IA; eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Estelle Neil, and granddaughter Thea Bestul.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 14, at Dennison Lutheran Church, Rev. Gerald Gengenbach officiating. Interment was at Prairie Creek Cemetery. Pallbearers were Roy Good, Peter Mundell, Angela Bestul, Steven Gergen, Kyle Gergen, Lisa Caton, Jeff Dawson, Michelle Dawson and Bruce McKinnon. Honorary pallbearers were Tom Estrem, Ben Ellingboe, Dan Storlie, Rueben Nelson and Orie Ims. Bierman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ella Dinse

Ella Caroline-Amalia Dinse, 89, died at Our Lady of Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls on Jan. 21, 1999. She was a former longtime resident of Steele and Waseca counties.

She was born Aug. 12, 1909 in Ramona, SD, daughter of John and Anna Beyer. She attended rural schools near Ramona. She married Edfried Dinse on Nov. 24, 1935 at St Paul's Lutheran Church, Meriden Township, Minnesota.

The couple farmed west of Owatonna until 1947 when they moved to Waseca Co., later moving to rural Owatonna to farm. Edfried died in June 1984. Ella farmed until 1990 when she had a heart attack and moved into Owatonna. She moved to Our Lady of Angels Care Center, Cannon Falls, in 1994.

In addition to helping her husband on the farm she was a lifelong homemaker. She enjoyed canning and baking, and was an excellent seamstress and did needlework, crocheting and made clothing for her family. She enjoyed cooking, reading and spending time with family, especially her grandchildren.

She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Meriden, and was very active in church circle and quilting groups.

Survivors include her daughters, Margie (Jack) Burrell, Estherville, IA, Carol (Robert) Marold, Buhl, and Joyce (Warren) Krumwiede, Mankato; nine grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a brother Edwin and sister, Selma Lebahn.

Funeral services were held Mon., Jan. 25, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Meriden, with burial in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Alzheimer's Disease, St. Paul's Church or donor's choice. Arrangements by Michaelson Funeral Homes, Owatonna.

Godfrey Beissel
Godfrey N. "Fritz" Beissel, 69, Hastings, died at his home on Monday, Jan. 25, 1999.

He was born Dec. 19, 1929, in New Trier, the son of Nicholas and Anna Beissel.

He married Marjorie L. "Marge" Peine on Nov. 26, 1953 in New Trier. He was a U. S. Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a self-employed farmer, and was a member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish, VFW, American Legion and Eagles.

He is survived by his wife, Marge; his mother, Anna Beissel, Hastings; sons, Dale and Dan (Laurie), both of Hampton; daughters, Peggy (Brian) Marquardt, Chaska, and Lois Phillips, Kasson; sisters, Delphina Schiller, Hampton, and Mary Ann Beyer, Cannon Falls; brothers, John Beissel, Hampton, and Robert Beissel, Cannon Falls; eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, daughter Geri and brother Art.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, Hastings. Burial will be in St. Elizabeth Ann Sention Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Wayne Beissel, Tom Beissel, Mike Beyer, Brandon Alzen, Craig Beissel and Chad Beissel. Honorary pallbearers were Wayne Link, Bob Duschane, Al Wagner, Leo Otto, Tubby Otto, Charlie Morke, Doug Olson and Marv Schiller.

Jean Carow

Jean Lillian Carow, 70, Welch, died at her son's home in Vasa Township on Sunday, Jan. 10, 1999, following a brief illness.

Jean was born on December 27, 1928 in South St. Paul, the daughter of Fred and Anna M. (Lehmann) Proulx. She was raised in South St. Paul and married Harold F. Carow on August 30, 1958 at the Luther Memorial Church in South St. Paul. He died on July 1, 1967.

Jean has lived in Welch since 1969, and enjoyed flower gardening.

She is survived by her children, William Carow, Jeffrey (Linda) Carow and Jane (Todd) Smith, all of Cannon Falls; four grandchildren, Jamie, Jacqueline and Alan John "A.J." Carow and Bonnie Smith; and her mother, Anna Stattmann.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Carow; father, Fred Proulx and stepfather, Larry Stattmann; and her grandparents who raised her, Karl and Amelia Lehmann.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at the Vasa Lutheran Church, with Pastor Michael Dobbins officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 5-7 p.m.

Arrangements by Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls.

Harold Errington
Harold Robert Errington, 81, rural Northfield, died on Saturday evening, January 9, 1999 at the Northfield Hospital.

Harold was born on November 21, 1917 in his parents Sciota Township farm house where he resided all of his life. His parents, William Francis Errington and Minnie Mary (Sweet) Errington had 12 children. Harold was the last of his family to survive. He was baptized into the Methodist faith at his parents' home.

He attended the Lewiston country school in Sciota Township and graduated from Northfield High School in 1935.

Harold met Marian Jeanette Johnson in June 1939. They were married on June 21, 1940 at the Spring Garden Lutheran Church parsonage and took up residence at the Errington family farm.

Harold enjoyed a lifetime of farming as well as being a member of Errington Trucking for more than 20 years.

His hobbies included hunting, fishing and family travel. Harold's death was the result of a four decade long battle with rheumatoid arthritis. In this struggle he received the tireless support of his loving wife, Marian, of his physician Dr. Tim Hogan, and of the physicians and nurses of the Northfield Hospital.

Surviving are son Allan, Renton, WA, son Donald and daughter-in-law Cyndy Duchscherer, Pollock Pines, CA and son Gary and daughter-in-law Nina (Thielbar) of rural Northfield. He also has granddaughters Angela and Lindsay of Northfield, granddaughter Andrea of Oakland, CA, and grandson Chris of Pleasant Hill, CA. He is also survived by brother-in-law William G. Frame of rural Northfield and by dozens of nieces and nephews.

Preceding Harold in death were his parents; five brothers, William, Lloyd, John, George and Charles; and six sisters, Ruth Meyer, Myrtle McCallum, Naomi, Minnie Frame, Mabel Ball and Margaret Schroeder.

Funeral service was held at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, Cannon Falls, with Pastor Dana Peterson officiating. Interment in Oaklawn Cemetery, Northfield will take place in the spring.

Pallbearers were nephews Bill and David Errington, David Frame, and Larry, Douglas and Jeff Johnson.

Edith Edstrom
Edith Margaret Edstrom, 87, Cannon Falls, died on Sunday, January 10, 1999 at the Seminary Home in Red Wing, where she has been a resident the past three years.

She was born on November 21, 1911 in Hibbing, the daughter of Edward and Maria (Berg) Johnson. She graduated from Denfield High School in Duluth, and later worked in Cloquet at the Weyerhauser family home.

Edith married Oscar Edstrom on September 15, 1934 in St. Paul. Following their marriage, they farmed in Vasa at the Edstrom family farm. Starting in 1959, Edith had also worked as a nurse's aide for 17 years at the Cannon Falls Hospital and Nursing Home. She truly was dedicated to helping at the hospital.

Oscar died on July 28, 1978. Edith was a very active member of the Vasa Lutheran Church.

She is survived by her children, Phyllis Vaaler of Edina, Margaret Underdahl of West Covina, CA, Judy (Allan) Struck of Chico, CA and Lyle (Jacqueline) Edstrom of Red Wing; 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; and two infant brothers.

Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 13 at 1 p.m. at the Vasa Lutheran Church, with Pastor Michael Dobbins officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to the church, Seminary Home, American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society.

Pallbearers will be Tom and Joe Edstrom, Elliot Baringer, Jon Struck, Robert and David Vaaler.
