Laura Nelson
Laura E. Nelson, 90, Red Wing, died Thursday, May 13, 1999 at Fairview Red Wing Hospital.

She was born April 20, 1909 in Barton, ND, the daughter of Edwin and Ora (Payne) Rhine. She graduated from Rugby High School in Rugby, ND, and attended teachers training in Minot, ND, and Winona. She taught for 26 years at schools in Goodhue, Zumbrota and Lake City districts, including rural districts.

She married Everal Nelson on December 1, 1962 in Red Wing. She was a member of First United Methodist Church where she was active in the Evening Circle; she was a member and served as past president of Business and Professional Women; she was a member of the Retired Teachers Association; enjoyed reading, sewing, and the love of her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Everal; one daughter, Bette (Claire) Erickson of Cannon Falls; one step-son, Terry (Iris) Nelson of Red Wing; two stepdaughters, Doris Ann (Burton) Diercks and Barb (Jim) Rietmann, both of Red Wing; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; three sisters, Glenna Ohlin of Hope, ND, Jessie Rudolph of Minot, ND and Patricia Pederson of WA; three brothers, James (Mary) Rhine of Tacoma, WA, Jerry Nauman of Surrey, ND and Dennis Nauman of Barton, ND. Her parents, one daughter, Beverly Bell; one grandson, Scott Bell and four brothers Gene, Pat, Mike and Ronald Rhine all preceded her in death.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 17 at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dale Wordelman officiating. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery in Red Wing.

Memorials preferred to the church or Red Wing ELC.

Pallbearers were Scotty Andrews, Doug and Tom DeWeese, Bob Holm, Annard Kohn and George Lesmann.

Melvin Priem
Melvin Priem, 69, Duquette, formerly of the Cromwell area, died peacefully on Friday, May 14, 1999 at his home with his family by his side.

He was born on May 2, 1930 in Glenwood City where he grew up and attended school. Mel was a U.S. Navy veteran. After the service, he lived in Bennett, WI. On February 17, 1951, Mel married Violet Torgerson in Carlton. They lived in Duluth for two years before moving to St. Paul and later to the Red Wing and Cannon Falls areas. Mel worked for 22 years as a millwright for Armour & Company in So. St. Paul. After farming in Red Wing, Mel and Vi purchased a tavern in Bellechester that they operated as Mel and Vi's Tavern from 1975 to 1979. In 1980, they moved to the Cromwell area where they farmed and operated Eagle Lake Resort. Mel and Vi moved to Duquette in 1997. He enjoyed fishing, cribbage, and hunting.

Mel was preceded in death by his three sons, Randy, Ricky and David; parents, Julius and Ruth (Burton) Priem; a brother, Reynold; and a sister, Vivian.

Survivors include his wife, Violet; three sons, Alan (Sheila) of Bellechester, Edwin (Linda) of Clermont, FL, and Marty (Denise) of Mahtowa; a daughter, Renay (Rock) Dodge of Shell Lake, WI; three brothers, Edwin Sr. (Leona) of Wright; Orville of Hawthorne, and Bruce (Jeanetta) of Barnum; four sisters, Erma (Gerhard) Gerth of St. Paul; Paula Priem of Omaha, NE, Delma Priem of Minneapolis, and Kathy (Steve) Holtz of Solon Springs; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many friends.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 19 in Oak Lake Lutheran Church, Kerrick Twp. Burial was in Oak Lake Community Cemetery, Kerrick Twp. Arrangements by Hamlin-Hansen-Kosloski Funeral Home, Moose Lake.

Alma Swanson
Alma Elizabeth Swanson, 99, Cannon Falls, died on Saturday evening, May 15, 1999 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Alma was born on November 19, 1899 in Clinton, IA, the daughter of Albert S. and Marie W. (Lundgren) Johnson. She moved to Cannon Falls when she was five years old. Alma graduated from Cannon Falls High School, and later took Normal training to become a teacher. She then taught rural school.

On August 18, 1921, Alma married Reuben Swanson. The couple farmed in the Spring Garden area, prior to moving to Wanamingo, where they operated a grocery store. In 1948 they moved to Cannon Falls.

Alma worked for many years as a cook in the Cannon Falls Schools.

She was an active member of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, and loved fishing. Alma will be remembered for her keen sense of humor and hearty laugh.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Reuben in 1965; two brothers, Frank and Oscar Johnson; and four sisters, Olga Lorenson, Mabel Bakke, Viola Dalton, and Evelyn Vukas.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, May 19 at 11 a.m. at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Dana Peterson officiating. Interment was at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Memorials are preferred.

Pallbearers were Dale Lorenson, Dick Dalton, John Bakke, Earl Johnson, Roger Olson and Walter Mathison. Honorary pallbearers were her godchildren.

Robert Herkenratt
Robert J. Herkenratt, 71, Rosemount, died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, from complications of emphysema.

He was born July 18, 1927 in Chetek, WI, the son of Ila and Milton Herkenratt. He married Carol Beckman at Wangen Prairie Lutheran Church, Dennison, on August 2, 1952. He was a Korean War veteran, and was retired from the Military Police of the Army. He also retired after 23 years in security with Honeywell. He was a member of the Masons, Last Man's Club and VFW of Northfield.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; son John (Kathleen), Eden Prairie; daughter Karen (Kevin) Hulscher, Farmington; brothers Richard (Dorothy), Faribault, and Harry (Geri), Detroit Lakes; brothers-in-law Donavan (Linda) Beckman, Northfield, John (Shirley) Beckman, Cannon Falls, Larry (Marleen) Beckman, Dennison; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Jr., and sister, Margaret Wood.

Funeral services were held May 10, at Farmington Lutheran Church. Interment was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Margaret Godfrey

Margaret Awilda Godfrey, 87, Cannon Falls, died on Monday evening, May 3, 1999 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls, where she has been a resident for the past 10 years.

Margaret was born on January 20, 1912 in Dakota County, the daughter of Peter N. and Gertrude (Grant) Henderson. She grew up in Castle Rock Township and later married Harold E. Godfrey. They farmed in Dakota and Goodhue counties until 1965, when they moved to Kenyon. At that time Margaret went to work at Foldcraft, and worked there for many years. Harold died in May 1973.

Margaret moved to the Freeborn Manor Apartments in Cannon Falls in 1980. She enjoyed quilting and using her loom to make rag rugs. She has been a resident at the nursing home since June 1989.

She was a member of the Stanton United Methodist Church, where she had been active in the Ladies Aid and taught Sunday school.

She is survived by her son, David (Ruth) Godfrey of Dennison; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren; brothers, Robert (Betty) Henderson of Northfield and Peter (Ruby) Henderson of Glendale, AZ; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Peter John Godfrey; daughter, Joyce Evelyn Johnson; sisters, Laura Troff and Polly Goulty; and brothers, Darwin, Max, Lenard and Richard Henderson.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 7 at 11 a.m. at the Stanton United Methodist Church, with Pastor Phil Strom officiating. Interment will follow at the Stanton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at church on Friday from 10-11 a.m. Pallbearers will be Roger Shorter, Patrick Johnson, Davey and Peter Godfrey, David Flom and Walter Kedrowski.

Florence Swanson
Florence Victoria Swanson, 98, a lifelong resident of the Cannon Falls area, died on Tuesday morning, May 4, 1999 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls, where she has been residing since December 27, 1991.

Florence was born on January 21, 1901 in Cannon Falls, the daughter of Swan A. and Hilda (Carlson) Swanson. She lived at home with her parents, and later lived for about five years with her nephew, Paul Swanson, on his farm. She worked for many years at the dime store in Cannon Falls. After Paul died in 1982, she moved to an apartment above the bakery in Cannon Falls. She broke her hip three years later, and moved to the nursing home.

She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, J. Edward Swanson; and nephew, Paul Swanson.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, May 7 at 7 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls, with Pastor Donald Bakken officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service.

Interment will take place on Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to Our Saviour's or Billy Graham Association.
