Russell Bowen
Russell A. Bowen, 89, died of natural causes Thursday afternoon, April 29, 1999 at Parkview Manor in Reinbeck, IA, where he had been a resident since March 28, 1997.

Born on October 27, 1909 in Freelandville, Indiana, he was the son of William and Pearl Bennett Bowen. One of five children, he grew up in the area of his birth and received his education there. On July 28, 1934 at New Sharon, IA, he was united in marriage to Helen H. Welch. The couple farmed north of Reinbeck until retiring in 1979 when they moved to the town of Reinbeck. Russell enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also an avid sports fan. Helen Bowen died on December 26, 1990.

He had been a member of the Izaak Walton League.

In addition to his wife and parents, Russell was preceded in death by his brother, Everett; his sister, Bernice Graveman; and his brother, Elmer in infancy.

Surviving are four sons: James and his wife Harriett Bowen of Reinbeck; William and his wife Pat of Reinbeck; Marlyn and his wife Marion of Apple Valley, formerly of Cannon Falls, and Robert and his wife Connie of Middletown, IA; daughter, Judith and her husband David Augustine of Flower Mound, TX; sister, Katherine Dew of Reinbeck; sisters-in-law Mary Lou Bowen of Reinbeck and Nina Modlin of Indianola, IA; 14 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren and 3 step-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 3 at Hand's Funeral Home Chapel, Reinbeck. Burial was in the Reinbeck Cemetery. A memorial fund is being established.

Pat Theel
Lillian (Pat) Theel, 82, Cannon Falls, died on Wednesday, April 28, 1999 at the Cannon Falls Community Hospital surrounded by her loving family.

She was born on June 28, 1916, in Herman to Edgar and Gertrude Reeder, grew up in rural Welch and graduated from Randolph High School.

Pat and her first husband George (Bob) Miller owned and operated Bob's Cafe from 1947-54. For several years she worked at Althoff's Hardware. Pat was an enthusiastic golfer and was also known for her artistic flair and love of animals.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Bob Miller; sister Vione; brother Vernon.

She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Clarence; sister, Marion Sutherland; son, Robert (Jan) Miller of White Bear Lake; daughter, Barbara Chase of Roseville; stepchildren, Gene (Phyllis) Theel of Minnetonka; Cathy (Byron) Snowden of Grand Rapids, Marthanne Theel of Rosemount; 6 grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, May 1, 11 a.m. at the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the church, the local animal adoption center or donor's choice.

Frances Lindstrom
Frances M. Lindstrom, 81, Red Wing, died Saturday, May 1, 1999 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.

She was born November 1, 1917 in Vasa Township, the daughter of Alfred and Selma (Ingeman) Swanson. She attended rural schools near Vasa and on June 8, 1944, she was married to Wilbur Lindstrom in Vasa. For many years they lived in Vasa, moving to Red Wing in the spring of 1998. She was a lifelong member of Vasa Lutheran Church. She enjoyed music, especially old time and Scandinavian music.

She is survived by her husband, Wilbur; one son, Jerry and wife Marcy Lindstrom of Richfield; two granddaughters, Kathy and husband Doug Anderson of Richfield and Karen Lindstrom of San Francisco, CA; two great-granddaughters, Samantha and Nicole Anderson. She was preceded in death by one sister, Myrtle Lindstrom and one brother, Ray Swanson.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 5 at Vasa Lutheran Church with Rev. Michael Dobbins officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Al Maki
Al Maki, 74, Farmington, died Monday, May 3, 1999, after an accident in his home.

He was born in Hancock, MI, where he attended high school. He played hockey at both Michigan Tech and Michigan State, where he graduated in 1953. He married Delores Powers on August 1, 1953. In 1959, he came to Farmington where he started the school's hockey program. He taught there for 30 years, retiring in 1989.

He was a past president of the state hockey association and was inducted into the Minnesota Hockey Hall of Fame. He was a past commander of both Farmington Legion and VFW and was a member of the Lions Club. He was involved in hockey at all levels and was a volunteer at the state high school track meet.

He is survived by his wife, Delores; children Donald (Gloria), Missouri; Karen (Jeff) Kelting, Farmington; Cheryl (Jim) Welt, Cannon Falls; five grandchildren, six step-grandchildren; brothers Albert and Wilbert; sister Ruth.

Funeral services will be held Friday, May 7, at 11 a.m. at Farmington Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Corinthian Cemetery, Farmington. Visitation will be Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. at White Funeral Home, Farmington.

Al Roiger

Albert Joseph "Al" Roiger, 82, Cannon Falls, died on Thursday morning, May 20, 1999 at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Al was born on July 1, 1916 in Springfield, the son of John B. and Elizabeth (Schneider) Roiger. He worked in a grocery store after school and on weekends for nine years. He served with the United States Army during World War II in England, France and Germany from January 6, 1942 until his honorable discharge on October 30, 1945.

He moved to Cannon Falls, and married Jeanette Kuhn on June 22, 1946. They owned and operated the "Super Market," located at the now Hi-Quality Bakery, with Irvin and Ann Freeberg from 1947-1961. After 13 years in partnership, Al and Jeanette sold it to the Freeberg's. Al managed the National Food store, which was located where the library is now, for 10 years. When SuperValu bought National, Al managed SuperValu for two years. He then worked at Lorentz Meats and the mall grocery store. After retiring, he worked part-time at SuperValu.

Al was a longtime active member of St. Pius V Catholic Church in Cannon Falls. He was a member of Father Paul Judge Knights of Columbus Council #4481, having served as Grand Knight. He was a member for over 50 years of both the VFW Nelson Scofield Post #4452 and the Kraft-Ostrom American Legion Post #142. He served on the Cannon Falls City Council for three years (1951-53), and served as mayor at two different time periods (1954 and 1968-69). He loved bowling, fishing, golfing and gardening. He enjoyed playing the accordion, especially at the nursing home.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 53 years, Jeanette; his children, Richard Roiger of Mankato, Theresa (John Menegon) Roiger of Marbletown, NY and Ronald (Susan) Roiger of Minneapolis; 5 grandchildren, Lisa, Jon, Ben, Charlotte and Simon Roiger; 2 step-grandchildren, Miles and Devon Menegon; brothers, George (Frieda) Roiger and Joseph (Marianna) Roiger, all of Springfield; sisters, Marie Wertisch of Springfield, Elizabeth Sorenson of Wabasso and Frances Scherer of Wayzata; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; stepmother, Theresa; sister, Anne Steffel; and brother, Adolph Roiger.

Mass of Christian Burial was Monday, May 24 at St. Pius V Catholic Church, with Fr. Roger Hessian officiating. Military honors followed the Mass at church. Interment will take place at a later date at the church cemetery.

Active pallbearers were Gordon Hennen, Jerry Jennigas, Michael Scherer, Raymond Rapp, Edward Lorentz and James Bowen. Honorary pallbearers were Knights of Columbus. Arrangements by Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls.

Merle Tate
Merle Douglas Tate, 86, Cannon Falls, died on Thursday morning, May 20, 1999 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Merle was born on June 18, 1912 in Stanton Township, the son of John W. and Ruth Tate. He attended St. Olaf College and enjoyed playing the violin in his younger years.

He married Helen C. Otte on June 19, 1937 at the Randolph Methodist Church. He and his wife Helen both graduated from Randolph High School.

After their marriage, Merle and Helen settled on his grandfather's farm southwest of Cannon Falls, where they lived for 60 years and where grandson Rob now resides. Merle was a long-time member of the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls. He had an inventive spirit and was always striving to protect the natural environment and conserve limited resources. His concern for the environment drove him to have strong interests in such things as wind energy. Merle was active in many farm organizations, especially the NFO. In his later years, he had a great interest in the restoration of antique machinery and automobiles.

Merle was preceded in death by brother, Chester; his parents, his son, Gary, and his wife, Helen.

He is survived by his children, Betty (Marlin) Kiecker of Plymouth and Harley (Deb) Tate of Kenyon; daughter-in-law, Nancy Tate-Cornair of Farmington; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren, Kevin and Anne Marie Caron and Ashley Vetscher, and 7 step-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Pauline Otte of Cannon Falls; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral service was held on Saturday, May 22 at First Congregational United Church of Christ in Cannon Falls, with Rev. Dr. Gary Titusdahl officiating. Interment was at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers to the church elevator fund.

Active pallbearers were David, Bryan, Robert and Andrew Tate, Mark Kiecker, Robert Caron, Wade Niemi and Robert Vetscher. Honorary pallbearers were Debra Vetscher, Sara Caron, Barbara Niemi, Melissa and Michele Tate.

Peter Endres
Peter H. Endres, 100, Cannon Falls, died at the Cannon Falls Hospital on Friday, May 21, 1999.

He was born in Hampton on Feb. 4, 1899, on the family farm in Hampton Township, the son of Henry and Odelia Endres. He was a longtime member of St. Mary's Parish in New Trier and was an avid hunter and fisherman. He liked to sing in the Hampton church choir and enjoyed acting in plays as a youth. He married Marie Rother on June 17, 1926. After living on the farm for 57 years, they sold it and moved into Cannon Falls in 1990. He and his family celebrated his 100th birthday on Feb. 7 at St. Mary's in New Trier.

He is survived by his wife, Marie, Cannon Falls; sons, Arnold (Cleo), Babbitt and David (Darlene), Eagan; daughters Mary (Clifford) Frandrup, Randolph, and Helene (Terrance) Tri, Hastings; 20 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by four sisters and two brothers, and a grandson, Danny Endres.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 24, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, New Trier. Officiants were Rev. Fr. Marvin Klaers, Michael O'Connor and Valerius Messerich. Burial was in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, New Trier. Pallbearers were Steven, Michael and Richard Endres, Russell, Randall, Roger and Bryan Frandrup, Kevin and Carey Tri. Honorary pallbearers were Edward Dohmen, Donald Ludwig, Nick Kimmes, Eugene Kimmes, Rainer Kimmes and Donald Lorentz. Arrangements by Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home.
