Wilbur Oberg
Wilbur N. Oberg, 74, Minneapolis, formerly of Red Wing, died Wednesday, March 17, 1999 at Fairview Riverside Hospice Comfort Care, Minneapolis.

He was born October 11, 1924 in Hager City, WI, the son of Herbert and Clara (Mann) Oberg. He graduated from Red Wing Central High School in 1942. He married Lenora Schauer November 15, 1944 in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Miesville. They made their home in Red Wing and he owned W.N. Construction. He resided at University Good Samaritan Home, Minneapolis, for the past 10 years. He was a member of the Church of Saint Joseph, Red Wing; and Red Wing Elks BPOE 845.

He is survived by two daughters, Carol (Harvey) Gerlach of Hastings and Linda (Glen) Lundell of Cannon Falls; 5 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; 1 brother, Lowell (Penny) Oberg of Hager City. His wife and one brother, Russell, preceded him in death.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Saturday, March 20 at Church of Saint Joseph, Red Wing, with Father Thomas Walker officiating. Burial was in St. Joseph's Cemetery in Miesville.

Memorials preferred to Alzheimer's research.

Pallbearers: Dan Breuer, Tony Gerlach, Brent Lundell, Russell Duane Oberg, Gene Oberg and Herb Oberg.

Lawton Burch

George Lawton Burch, Sr., 88, Cannon Falls, and formerly of Stanton, died on Monday morning, March 8, 1999 at the Cannon Falls Community Hospital.

He was born on November 11, 1910 in St. Paul, the son of George and Lillie (Fox) Burch. He graduated from Randolph High School in 1929.

Lawton married Luella Robinson on June 16, 1936 at the Stanton United Methodist Church. Following their marriage they farmed for 15 years on the Fox farm in Stanton Township. Lawton was self-employed for 24 years in well pumps, plumbing and heating. He also was a salesman for 34 years with Pioneer Seed.

Lawton was a long-time member of the Stanton United Methodist Church where he had been chairman for many years. Lawton and Luella were custodians for the church for 38 years, and were also responsible for running the church bulletins for 10 years. They had also been 4-H leaders for 5 years. Lawton was on the Stanton Cemetery board for 52 years, the Stanton Township board as treasurer for 23 years, and a member of the Masonic Oriental Lodge #34 for nearly 40 years.

Lawton loved his family, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved the game of baseball, which he played in his younger years. The passion for the game continued throughout his life. He also enjoyed deer hunting in northern Minnesota.

Lawton is survived by his wife of over 62 years, Luella of Cannon

Falls; his children Louetta (Iver) Larson of Woodland Park, CO, Joan (Harry) Melhouse of Cannon Falls and George Jr. (Bonnie) of Stanton; eight grandchildren, Reed Larson of Prescott, AZ; Kari Larson (Matt Kohrs) of Oak Forest, IL; Blaine (Lynn) Melhouse of Kenyon; Natalie Melhouse of Plymouth; Mitchell (Kim) Melhouse and Regan (Janell) Melhouse, all of Cannon Falls; Chris (Leanne) Burch of Madison, WI; and Tim Burch of Eagle, CO; six great-grandchildren, Ryan, Derek, Amber, Matthew, Tyler and Nathan Melhouse; brother John (Jeannette) Burch of Cannon Falls; and nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Stanton United Methodist Church with Pastor Linda Grounds officiating. Interment will follow at the Stanton Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5-8 p.m. with a Masonic service at 7 p.m. at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls. There will also be visitation at the church on Thursday from 1-2 p.m.

Active pallbearers will be his six grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be his two granddaughters.

Pearl Schramske
Pearl Margaret Midness Schramske, 96, a life-long resident of Cannon Falls, died on Sunday morning, March 7, 1999 at the Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

She was born on June 22, 1902 in Cannon Falls, the daughter of August and Margaret (Uslar) Wenz.

Pearl was a member of the First English Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls and had also been involved with the Golden Agers.

She is survived by her children William (Betty) Midness of Cannon Falls and Shirley (Edward) Payne of Aiken, South Carolina; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband Sjur Midness; second husband Frank Schramske; brothers Fred and William Wenz; and sisters Clara Erickson and Gladys Johnson.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 9 at the First English Lutheran Church with Pastor Phillip Ruud officiating. Interment was at the Cannon Falls Cemetery. Memorials are preferred to the church.

Pallbearers were Bryce Banks, Sjur and Haaken Midness, Wayne, Bill and Doug Erickson and Ray Todd.

Becci Elias

Rebecca "Becci" Ann Elias, 50, Cannon Falls, died on Tuesday, April 20, 1999 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester after a brief illness.

Becci was born July 24, 1948 in Pipestone to Edward J. and Nina (Baker) Hiemstra. Becci grew up in Owatonna and graduated from the Owatonna High School. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor's degree in elementary education.

On June 14, 1970 she and Richard were married in Owatonna. They first lived in Alabama, where Becci taught school. In 1971 they moved to Minneapolis, and in 1991 moved to their farm in Cannon Falls.

She worked as a preschool aide and taught in the E.C.F.E. programs in the Cannon Falls schools. Becci is also known for her organic gardening. She marketed her produce in the Cannon Falls area and at the Cannon Falls Farmers Market. She was very active at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church. Raising her family and the farming were her key interests.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and a brother, Justin.

She is survived by her husband Richard; three sons, Ben (17), Anthony (15), and Chuck (11) all of Cannon Falls; two brothers, Jack Hiemstra and Harland Hiemstra; two sisters, Mary Nash and Carey (Bill) Kanuit all of the Twin City area.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, April 22 at 2 p.m. at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, Cannon Falls with Rev. Dana Peterson officiating. Interment was at Cherry Valley Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to the Land Stewardship Project or to the Cherry Valley Cemetery Association.

Pallbearers were Luke Elias, Bill Kanuit, Derek Hiemstra, Brian Schellenberg, Elias Naatz, and Jim Larson.

Stella Johnson
Stella E. Johnson, 83, Minneapolis, died Sunday, April 25, 1999.

She was born in Faribault on August 23, 1915. She married Warren Johnson, who at one time lived in the Cannon Falls area. She was an active member of the Eastern Star. She worked for and was retired from the Temple Israel. She is survived by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren, and 15 siblings.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 1, at 1 p.m. at Cremation Society of MN, 7110 France Ave. So., Edina.

Donald Dockter

Donald Gordon "Doc" Dockter, 55, Cannon Falls, died on Wednesday morning, March 10, 1999 at his home in Randolph.

Donnie was born on December 22, 1943 in Minneapolis, the son of Jacob and Othelia "Tillie" (Ost) Dockter. He attended Cannon Falls High School. He owned and operated Doc's Service in Cannon Falls from the summer of 1980 until January 1, 1998.

Donnie married Cecilia "Archie" Gervais Hager on December 27, 1990 in Las Vegas, NV.

He loved spending time with his family and lovingly teasing his grandchildren. He truly enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing.

Donnie is survived by his wife Cecilia "Archie;" his children Cynthia (Mike) Reichstadt, Susan Dockter and David Dockter, all of Cannon Falls; grandchildren Bryant and Meighan Reichstadt; sisters and brothers Phyllis (Charles) Long of Phoenix, AZ, Jacob (Sharon) Dockter of Cannon Falls, Jerry (Gail) Dockter of Cannon Falls, Patricia (Ronald) Magnuson of Shoreview, Pamela (Gregory) Moeller of Roseville, and Douglas (Debbie) Dockter of Circle Pines; and aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Marlene Dockter.

Funeral services were held on Saturday at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls with Pastor Dana Peterson officiating.

Active pallbearers were his nephews Scott, Jeff and Josh Dockter, Greg Moeller, Travis Magnuson and Jody Dockter. Honorary pallbearers were nephews Jake and Doug Dockter, Brian Moeller and Jason Magnuson.
