Olive Johnson

Olive Elvira Johnson, 93, Cannon Falls, died on Thursday evening, June 10, 1999 at Our Lady of the Angels Care Center in Cannon Falls.

Olive was born on April 24, 1906 in Worthington, the daughter of Sven Johann and Freda (Wallgren) Anderson. She attended school in Worthington and later moved to Cannon Falls in March 1915. She schooled in Cannon Falls, completing the 12th grade in 1923. She later met her first husband, Ronald Anderson in the Goodhue County area. They were married on September 14, 1935 and had one child, John Anderson. Ronald was killed on the farm on March 29, 1939 when John was a small child.

Olive later married Bertil Johnson on February 6, 1943 and had a son, Byrl Johnson. Olive and Bertil were members of St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls. She was always very active in her church, where she was a member of the Lutheran Church Women, a Sunday school teacher, involved with Bible study and sewing circle. Olive was the Cloverdale 4-H leader for over 30 years and was a Cannon Falls Hospital Auxiliary member. Olive was involved with the project unit, and in 1940, was the Cannon Falls Township Chairwoman for the extension. She was influential in organizing six new groups in townships. Olive enjoyed crocheting afghans and was an avid quilter. She loved spending time with her family and friends. Bertil died on April 1, 1977.

Olive is survived by her sons, John (Gwen) Anderson of Phil Campbell, AL, and Byrl Johnson of Cannon Falls; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; and six sisters and brothers, Minnie Widholm, Helen Munson, Alice Anderson, Ruth "Hildegarde" Larson, Walter Anderson and J. Everett Anderson.

Funeral service was held on Tuesday at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, with Pastor Daphne Hamborg officiating. Interment was at the Cannon Falls Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Harlan Widholm, Maurice Anderson, Kermit and Kevin Lindahl, Dennis Wright and Brad Munson.

Lloyd Vandenheuvel
Lloyd "Sarge" Vandenheuvel, 69, died at the VA Hospital in Louisville, KY, on June 6, 1999.

He was born in Randolph on Sept. 2, 1929, the son of the late Adrian and Estella Vandenheuvel. He married Rosa Durbin, West Point, KY, in 1990.

He retired from the US Army after 23 years of service. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received many honors, including the Purple Heart.

He is survived by two sisters, Gladys (David) Lohman, Zumbrota, and Irene (Wayne) Erickson, Cannon Falls; many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and a brother.

Funeral services were held June 8 at the chapel in Irvington, KY. Interment was at the Irvington Cemetery.

Deil Gustafson

Deil Otto "Gus" Gustafson, 67, Cannon Falls, a well-known businessman and mentor, died suddenly on Friday evening, April 2, 1999, at the Cannon Falls Community Hospital.

He was born on May 5, 1931, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Otto and Britta (Osberg) Gustafson. He grew up on a farm in Iowa and later attended Carleton College in Northfield.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, he earned a masters of science degree from the University of North Dakota, and a law degree from William Mitchell School of Law. He was a former professor at the U of MN. He was a former owner of Summit Banks, had owned many other businesses, and was a proud farmer.

He was the beloved father of Kristina A. Gustafson of Cannon Falls; loving grandfather of Gunnar Gustafson and Krisanna Gustafson all of Cannon Falls; Susan Vance of Cannon Falls; dear brother of Jeanette Gustafson of Rochester; uncle of Michael Toohey of Minneapolis; special friends Tom and Peggy O. McNamee of Edina; and numerous relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Otto and Britta Gustafson.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday at Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls with Pastor Michael Dobbins officiating. Interment was at the Zion Cemetery in Hampton Township. Memorials are preferred to donor's choice.

Active pallbearers were Eugene and Charles Molitor, Michael Toohey, Thomas McNamee, Dr. Herbert Ward and Dr. Robert Molenaar. Honorary pallbearers were John Derus, Lou Demars, Robert Hildreth, Paul Erickson, Dwaine Johnson, James Erickson, Robert Hoffman and Cy Sheehy.

Marian Gangloff
Marian Gangloff, 88, Faribault, died on Tuesday, March 30, 1999 at the Faribault Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Marian, the daughter of John E. and Edith Belle (Hoover) Ring, was born on August 25, 1910 in Medford. She graduated from Faribault High School in 1929 and was a member of the National Honor Society. She married Glenn Gangloff and they farmed in the Randolph area before moving to Faribault. They later divorced. In the 1950s, Marian assisted migrant workers in Faribault through the canning company. She was formerly employed by the Faribault Daily News and the Shattuck Canteen. She also worked for the Rice County Credit Bureau for 35 years.

Marian was a member of Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church in Faribault for over 70 years, where she was honored for 40 years as Sunday school secretary. She was a member of the United Methodist Women's Sarah Circle and Ocneedus Fellowship Group. Marian volunteered many hours at the Clothes Closet, the Senior Center, and the Rice County Historical Society. For many years, every Sunday morning, she delivered church bulletins to shut-ins at Faribault Health and Rehabilitation Center. She also was responsible for several years for delivering 50 poinsettia plants to Methodist shut-ins. She served as vice president of R.E.A.C. and was a member of the Faribault Eagles Club, Aerie #1460. She was honored in 1997 as one of Rice County's Outstanding Senior Citizens.

She is survived by one son, Robert (Sharon) Gangloff of Northfield; two grandsons, Donald and Phil (Patty); two granddaughters, Marsha and Lisa (Jim) Berry; four great-grandchildren, Jason, Nicole, Kristina, and Becca; four brothers, Orville "Bud" (Verna) Ring of Garland, TX, James B. (Maren) Ring of Albert Lea, John W. (Loretta) Ring of St. Paul, and Avison "Buck" (Marge) Ring of Faribault; six sisters, Dorothy (Arthur) Voge of Faribault, Helen Sellner of Faribault, Margaret Puffer of Waterville, Florence Lawson of Madelia, Hazel (Walter) Voss of St. Charles, and Flora Jean Puffer of Spencer, IA; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers-in-law; one sister-in-law; two nieces; one nephew.

Services were Saturday, April 3 at 3 p.m. at the Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church, Faribault, with the Rev. Gordon J. Orde, officiating. Interment was at the Maple Lawn Cemetery, Faribault.

Memorials would be preferred to Fourth Avenue United Methodist Church, Faribault or to donor's choice.

Doris Althoff
Doris Annette Althoff, 86, Cannon Falls, died on Sunday, April 4, 1999 at the Our Lady of the Angels Care Center, Cannon Falls.

She was born July 19, 1912 in Harmony, to Carlus and Blanche (Hellickson) Selvig. Doris grew up in Harmony and graduated from Harmony High School. She earned a scholarship to attend St. Olaf College in Northfield, and later graduated from the University of Minnesota School of Education with degrees in Music Ed and English Ed.

Prior to marriage, Doris taught for 10 years. She was also employed by Boeing Aircraft and McDonnell Douglas Aircraft during World War II, and had worked as a singing waitress in Yellowstone National Park.

On December 30, 1944 she and Oliver Althoff were married at her home in Harmony. Following their marriage they lived in the southern part of the U.S., as Oliver was in the military. They have lived in Cannon Falls since 1946.

Doris taught at Cannon Falls High School for many years and she taught at Mineral Springs Sanatorium. She had also taught home bound students, and was a substitute teacher.

She was a volunteer for Girl and Boy Scouts; VFW Auxiliary; ladies aid at church; member of the Order of the Eastern Star; and volunteered at the care center in Cannon Falls doing bingo. She was a member of the Republican Party.

Doris loved to travel; was an avid reader; enjoyed theater; going to Guthrie performances, Broadway Show Tunes; and was interested in current events.

She is survived by her husband Oliver; two sons, John (Phyllis) and James (Debra) all of Cannon Falls; a daughter, Mary Althoff (Fred Thurston) of Seattle, WA; 6 grandchildren, Mitchell, Michael, Christopher, Andrew Althoff, Jodi and Carie Johnson; and a sister, Eleanor (Arver) Thorne of St. Paul.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Memorial service was held on Wednesday, April 7 at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church, Cannon Falls with Pastor Dana Peterson officiating. Interment was private.

Memorials preferred to the piano fund at St. Ansgar's Lutheran Church.

Scott Farmer
Scott Joseph Farmer, 34, Cannon Falls, died at his home on Wednesday, March 31, 1999.

Scott was born on September 16, 1964 in Eau Claire, WI, the son of James and Joan (Schubert) Farmer. He grew up and schooled in Chippewa Falls, WI, graduating in 1983 from Chippewa Falls Senior High.

He moved to Cannon Falls in 1988, and has worked at the Amesbury Group-Plastic Profiles Division since that time.

Scott loved the outdoors, including hunting, fishing and snowmobiling. He also enjoyed working on cars.

He is survived by his daughters, Leigha Farmer-Presley and Shannon Flakne, both of Cannon Falls; his loving partner, Lisa Presley of Cannon Falls; his mother, Joan Farmer of Chippewa Falls; brothers, Richard (Carol) Farmer of Cadott, WI, David (Heidi) Farmer and Christopher (Tina) Farmer, all of Chippewa Falls; sisters, Jane (Mike) Miller of Nashotah, WI, Julie (David) Potts of Eau Claire, Karol (Mike) Bednar of Farmington and Karen Farmer of Philadelphia, PA; nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Farmer; and grandparents, George and Agnes Schubert, and Curtis and Dorothy Farmer.

Mass of Christian Burial was on Tuesday, April 6 at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Chippewa Falls, WI. Burial was at the Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Eau Claire.

Pallbearers were Dallas Larson, Fred Presley, Bruce Pagel, Eugene Freiermuth, Mike Salter and Jeff Lyberg.

Arrangements locally by Lundberg Funeral Home in Cannon Falls.
