William Caywood
Jeffrey (Terry) Caywood, Proctor High School Dean of Students, is mourning the death of his father, William Caywood. The Duluth resident passed away Sat., Apr. 3, 2004, at St. Luke's Hospital. He was 82.

He was born in Fredenburg, Minn. on Sept. 10, 1921 to Violet and Ike Caywood. Bill attended Denfeld High School. He served three years in the Navy in the South Pacific on USS Syrene. Bill married Charlotte Caroline Wahlberg on March 15, 1947. He owned several trucking businesses throughout his life. Bill concluded his career as an employee at Arrowhead Blacktop. He served as commander at the Fox Southerland VFW Post 6320.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents and brother CW 'Chick' Caywood.

He is also survived by his loving wife of 57 years Charlotte, children Jody (Jim) Watt, Jay (Hollis) Caywood and James (Terese) Caywood, 10 grandchildren, and 20 nieces and nephews.

Service was held Tuesday at United Protestant Church in Morgan Park. Burial was in Oneota Cemetery with military honors accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard.

Les Hinks
Les Hinks, who had been active with the Twig Hockey Association and was active with the local stock car racing circuit through the 1950's and early 1960's where he was a top contender, died Tues., Mar. 30, 2004. He was 76.

The Canosia Rd., Saginaw resident was born in St. Paul, Minn. on Dec. 6, 1927 to Leon and Violet I. Hinks. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Les had worked for St. Louis County, retiring in 1965. He was a member of the DAV, and attended Gethsemane Covenant Church. Les was proud of his grandson serving in Iraq. He had a love of nature and enjoyed all outdoor activities, as well as a great love for music, especially his guitar. In his earlier years, he played in a country Western Band.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bob.

Survivors include his wife Helen, sons, Mike (Michelle) of Calif., Patrick of Hermantown, and Greg (Carrie) of Saginaw; daughters Debbie (Glenn) Hansen of Hermantown, and Teri (Tim) Lettich of Calif., 11 grandchildren, his sister Arlene Hinks of St. Paul, and daughter-in-law Pam Hinks of Duluth.

Services were held last week at Gethsemane Covenant Church, with Pastor Steve Weihsmann officiating.

Rita Yesalonis
Services will be held today, Thurs., Apr. 8, 2004, for Rita Yesalonis. She died Mon., Apr. 5, 2004, in Lake Haven Manor. She was 66.

Rita was born July 8, 1937 in Detroit, Mich., to John and Helen (Mincavage) Yesalonis, and was a longtime area resident. She graduated from UWS in 1974 with high honors and a BS degree in Business. She was a county clerk for St. Louis County from 1979 to 1997, when she retired. Rita was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion. She loved gardening, canning, baking, traveling and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Rita was a long time volunteer with the Salvation Army.

Surviving is her special friend and companion Roy Carlson of Duluth, sons Ronald (Mary Jo) Booth of Duluth and Jesse (Kristina) Booth of Osceola, Wis., a daughter LaDonna (Larry Sr.) Yadon of Superior, Wis., grandchildren Kenny (Rachel) Rogers, Karla Rogers, Tina Booth, Jesse Booth Jr., Mandy Booth, and Lacey Booth, and a great-grandson Jacob Lackner.

Visitation in Bell Brothers Funeral Home from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. service today, Thursday, in Zion Lutheran Church. Inurnment will be in Union Cemetery.

Ellen LaVerna Kubis
Ellen 'Vernie' LaVerna Kubis, who has been a Saginaw resident for over a half-century, died Fri., Apr. 2, 2004, in Inter-Faith Care Center, Carlton, Minn. She was 96.

She was born on April 17, 1907, in Courtenay, N.D., an only child to Paul and Katherine (Kennedy) Hackstock. She taught school in a one-room school in N.D. The family moved to Saginaw in 1950. She was employed at various places including North Star Ballroom, Halvorsen Trees, Duluth Avionics, Surf and Sand Nursing Home, Saginaw and Twig Post Offices, and AlBrook School. Vernie was a longtime member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Saginaw.

She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband Lawrence E. in 1992, the father of her 10 children, sons Donald C. in 1987 and Ronald G. in 2001, great-grandson Zachery Kubis in 1996, and great-great-grandson Aubin Clausen in 2000.

She is survived by her children Arthur (Betty), Lawrence 'Cub' (Pauline), Kenneth, Robert 'Chip' (Kathy), all of Saginaw, Gerald 'Jer' (Barb) of Cloquet, Charlene 'Chuck' 'Chum' (Norman) Amborn, Norma 'Manny' Nichols of Saginaw and Lorraine 'Toots' Gilbertson of Calif., daughter-in-law Lucille Kubis of Cloquet, 26 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Pallbearers were her five remaining sons Art, Cub, Ken, Jer and Chip and Corky Nelson. Honorary pallbearers were her three daughters Char, Norma and Toots.

Burial will be in New Calvary Cemetery, Cloquet, today, Thursday.

Anne Dickson
Services were held earlier this week for Anne Therese (Portegys) Dickson of South Ugstad Road, Proctor. She died Wed., Apr. 7, 2004, in St. Luke's Hospital. She was 87.

She was born on March 19, 1917 in Libertyville, Ill. to Peter and Gertrude (DeBoer) Portegys. Anne had been a Proctor resident since 1942. She married Franklin H. Dickson, M.D. on Oct. 14, 1939. Anne was a homemaker. In earlier years, she drove the St. Rose School bus, when it was just a station wagon. Anne was an avid gardener, Minnesota Twins fan and loved fishing. She cherished times at her cabin on Aerie Lake where she passionately watched eagles, which nested very near her cabin. Her driving force was her love for her family, which kept her going through many adversities. Anne was an active member of St. Rose Catholic Parish, Proctor Women of the Moose and was a charter member of the Aerie Lake Association.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dr. Frank Dickson in 1984, sons Franklin III in 2002, Michael in 1965 and Peter in 1955, brothers James and Peter, and sisters Nellie, Gertrude, Kathryn and Mary.

Survivors include sons John R. 'Jack' and Thomas A. (Collette), both of Proctor, daughters Victoria (Brian) Blauer of Sartell, Minn. and Deborah (David 'Scotty') McLeod of Proctor, grandchildren Anne Dickson, Toshi (Jason) Ruprecht, Brianna and Erin Blauer, Mackenzie (Angie), Nicholas and Rozalin Dickson and Scott (Heidi) and Michael (fiancee, Amanda Kolquist) McLeod; and great-grandchildren Ian, Abby, Rebekeh, Kieran, Valencia, Tatianna, Jace, Kaleb and Nolan. The family would like to thank Dr. Thomas Heinitz and St. Luke's ER staff for their kindness.

Burial will be in Wauconda Cemetery, Wauconda, Ill. If so desired, memorial contributions may be directed to St. Rose Catholic Church or the donor's choice.

Ethel Nancy McGovern
Ethel Nancy McGovern of Railview Apts. in Proctor passed away Fri., Apr. 9, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. She was 84.

She was born on Nov. 22, 1919 to Nels and Anna Stahl in Duluth. Ethel married Philip Ryan McGovern on Jan. 26, 1940 in Duluth and they were Proctor residents for many years. Ethel was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church. She loved flowers, gardening, reading, sewing and knitting presents for her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Philip, two sons Little Phil and Ryan McGovern, two brothers Otto and James Stahl, and a sister Mabel Anderson.

She is survived by daughters Nancy (Earl) Anderson of Farmington, Minn., Susan (James) Heinz of Gwinn, Mich. and Kathleen (Steve) Fossum of Esko, a daughter-in-law Donna McGovern of Mounds View, Minn., brothers Raymond (Shirley) Stahl of Duluth and Herbert (Bertha) Stahl of Ore., sisters-in-law LaRona McGovern and Delores McGovern both of Duluth, and Charlotte McGovern of Saginaw, 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, friends and good neighbors.

Burial in Hermantown Cemetery. Memorials to St. Rose Catholic School would be appreciated.

Marie A. (LeMay) Rep
Marie A. (LeMay) Rep, who was born and raised in Proctor, quietly passed away in her home in Cottonwood Ariz., Wed., Apr. 7, 2004. She was 76.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years Sam Rep.

Survivors include her sons Kenneth of Superior and Stan (Sharon) of Mosinee, Wis., her daughter Linda (Robert) of Cottonwood, four grandchildren, several sisters and brothers, nieces and nephews, and cousins.

A small service was held in her final resting place of Yuma, Ariz., on Tues., Apr. 13.

Shirley Irene (Ollila) Johnson
Gaylene Walsh of Twig, Ryan Walsh of Proctor and Kyle Walsh of Twig are mourning the death of their mother and grandmother, respectively, Shirley Irene (Ollila) Johnson of Floodwood. She died Tues., Apr. 6, 2004, in Lake Haven Manor in Duluth. She was 81.

She was born in Cloquet on June 25, 1923 to Jacob and Melita (Penttila) Ollila. Shirley married John M. Johnson in a double ceremony with John's sister, Eileen to Halgar Sparring. Shirley was a member of Hope Lutheran Church and served on the Halden Town board.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 56 years John on Oct. 3, 2000, and one brother Edward Ollila.

Shirley is survived by her two other children, two other grandsons two great-grandsons including Antonio Walsh Michelizzi, a sister, a brother, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Interment will take place at a later date in Hope Lutheran Cemetery.

Suzanne Marie (Mullen) Putnam
Suzanne Marie (Mullen) Putnam, who had lived in Midway Township most of her life, passed away Thurs., Apr. 8, 2004, in Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd, Minn. She was 70.

She was born in Niles, Mich. She married Wayne H. Putnam and together they celebrated 50 years of marriage. She was a lifelong member of the Salvation Army Church where she volunteered for many functions.

She is preceded in death by her husband Wayne (2003), father Loren, and infant son Scott Arthur.

Survivors include her sons Keith A. (Lori) and Paul W. Sr. (Iris), daughters Stacy A. (Virgil) Keutzer and Shannon L. Putnam, her mother Dorothy, brother Doug (Sharon) Mullen, sisters Kris (Chuck) Underly and Lari Watson; and six grandchildren.

Entombment in Sunrise Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Kenneth Hanson
Services will be held today, Thurs., for Kenneth 'Shorty' Hanson, age 74, of Cloquet. He died Sat., Apr. 10, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer.

Shorty was born June 26, 1929 in St. Paul, Minn., the son of Russell and Pearl Hanson. He served with the Army National Guard and worked for Conwed Corp. until 1985. Shorty then worked for Rosen Log Home, Inc., and also for the city of Cloquet. He was a member of the American Hunting Club, the Big Lake Trap Shooting Club, and was on numerous bowling leagues. Shorty was an avid outdoorsman. He especially enjoyed duck hunting and turkey hunting. He also loved walking around Cloquet, and eating and visiting with friends at the Country Kitchen.

Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, and had no known surviving relatives.

He is survived by his very special friends Don and Betty Eriksen, Dean Eriksen, Gary Eriksen, and Rose Schmitz, all of Carlton, and many other friends. His special friends would like to thank Plainview Estates in Esko for the excellent care they have given to Shorty.

Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until the 11:00 a.m. funeral service at Nelson Funeral Care Chapel with Rev. Michael Fossen officiating, followed by a luncheon in the fellowship room. Nelson Funeral Care Chapel is located at 1400 Cloquet Ave. Interment services will be at Mt. Salem Cemetery in Mahtowa.
