Milton "Milt" Bunkowske

The funeral service for Milton "Milt" Bunkowske, 73, Ottertail, Minnesota was held on Monday, June 14, 1999 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Ottertail with Reverend Timothy Vaughan officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mr. Bunkowske passed away on Wednesday, June 9, 1999 in his home after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Milton Lawrence Bunkowske was born the third son of Ferdinand and Frieda (Sonnenberg) Bunkowske on May 13, 1926 in Hobart Township, near Vergas. Milton grew up and worked on the family farm. He attended St. John's Lutheran Parochial School in Vergas.

On April 7, 1951, he married Caroline Janke of Evergreen. They lived and farmed near Vergas. Milton owned and operated Bunkowske Refrigeration for many years. On September 30, 1977, he married Virginia Sundberg of Fergus Falls, Minnesota in Helena, Montana. Together Milton and Ginny made their home near Rush Lake in Otter Tail County. Milton retired from farming in 1988.

Milton was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Ottertail and of the Ottertail Lion's Club. He was the recipient of the coveted Lion's "Melvin Jones Fellowship Award."

He is survived by his wife, Virginia of Ottertail, two sons, Keith (Shelley) of Vergas and Myron (Kathy) of Rapid City, South Dakota; four daughters, Carmen (Steve) Ehnert of Vergas, Margie (Scott) Gilles of St. Paul, Minnesota, Joan (Jeff) Niemann of Bismarck, North Dakota and Renee (Paul) Barta of Friendship, Wisconsin; one step-son, Dennis (Michelle) Sundberg of Detroit Lakes, Minnesota; two brothers, Alvin (Helen) of Helena, Montana and Gerald (Eunice) of Norfolk, Nebraska, 16 grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one great grandchild and one great step-grandchild and many nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Vernon.

Arrangements were with the Furey Funeral Home, Vergas, Minnesota.

George DeBruyn

Funeral services were held for George DeBruyn, age 84 of Menahga, Minnesota on Wednesday, June 16 at the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home in New York Mills, Minnesota. George passed away at the Perham Memorial Home in Perham, Minnesota on June 13, 1999.

Arangements were provided by the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills, Minnesota.

George DeBruyn

Funeral Mass was held for George DeBruyn of Menahga on Wednesday, June 26, 1999 at the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home in New York Mills, Minnesota with Father Kevin Schwartz officiating. The hymns: "Precious Lord, Take My Hand", "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art" were sung by the congregation, accompanied by Mary Peeters. The pallbearers were Daryll Huwe, Deland Huwe, Dean Huwe, Steve Hendrickx, Dale Sweere and Mike Laningan. The honorary pallbearers were Clarence Paurus, Gary Peeters, Dan Huwe, Scott Huwe and Dennis Huwe. George was laid to rest in the Holy Cross Catholic Church Cemetery in Butler, Minnesota.

George John DeBruyn was born March 4, 1915 at home in Becker County, rural Menahga, Minnesota. His parents were the late Marinus and Katherine (VanDorst) DeBruyn. George grew up on the family farm in Butler, Minnesota. He farmed his entire life near Butler, Minnesota. George enjoyed tractors and animals, especially horses. He collected Breyer Horses and loved going to auctions with his long time friend and companion, Olga. On June 13, 1999 George passed away at the Perham Memorial Home in Perham, Minnesota at 84 years of age. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Preceding George in death were his parents, 4 sisters and 3 brothers.

Surviving are his long time friend and companion, Olga McGrady of Menahga, Minnesota; 2 sisters: Anne Huwe of New York Mills, Minnesota and Julia Sweere of Wadena, Minnesota; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends.

Arrangements were provided by the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills, Minnesota.

Vernon "Putky" Januszewski

Funeral Mass will be held for Vernon "Putky" Januszewski of Perham on Friday, June 25, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Stainlaus Catholic church in Perham, MN with Rev. David Rieder officiating. Visitation will take place on Thursday from 4-9 p.m. with a prayer service at 8:00 p.m.

Vernon passed away at home on Saturday, June 19 at the age of 72.

Elmer W. Lubitz

Funeral Mass will be held for Elmer W. Lubitz of Perham on Thursday, June 24, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Perham, MN with Rev. Del Meyer officiating. There will be visitation one hour prior to the service. Elmer passed away at the Perham Memorial Hospital on Sunday June 20.

Funeral arrangements are being provided by Schoeneberger Funeral Home, Perham, MN.

Judge Gaylord A. Saetre

Judge Gaylord A. Saetre, age 82, a resident of rural Perham, formerly of Moorhead, and most recently of Long Prairie, passed away Sunday, June 20, 1999 at Long Prairie Memorial Hospital.

A memorial service was held on Wednesday, June 23, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moorhead, MN with Rev. Arvild Jacobson officiating. He was laid to rest in United Lutheran Cemetery, Henning, MN.

Gaylord was born on December 21, 1916 in Henning, MN to Alfred and Ida (Thorson) Saetre. He was raised in Henning, and attended North Dakota State University, the University of Minnesota, William Mitchell College of Law School with a law degree, the FBI Academy, and the National College of Trial Judges at the University of Nevada. Following several years as a Special Agent of the FBI, he practiced law from 1945 to 1962 in Moorhead where he attained prominence as a Trial Lawyer and as Attorney for several communities in the area. He was the Republican Candidate for Minnesota Attorney General in 1958 and 1960. In 1962, Judge Saetre became a District Judge in the Seventh Judicial District, and served on the trial bench and occasionally as an Appelate Judge. He married Mary Bennett on December 5, 1942.

Though retired and on senior status, he continued to hear cases when called upon by the Minnesota Supreme Court. He lived in Moorhead until 1985, when he moved to Little McDonald Lake, rural Perham. He had been receiving therapy at the Long Prairie Memorial Home for the past 3 weeks, after suffering a hip fracture. He spent his winters at Sun City, Arizona, where he contributed his time assisting indigent and elderly people with legal problems.

Active in numerous legal and civil affairs, he received Distinguished Service Awards from the FBI, the Minnesota Supreme Court, and Outstanding "Young Man of Minnesota in 1961", and numerous other recognitions for his contributions in community affairs, juvenile rehabilitation programs, criminal justice programs, and in the field of judicial education. He enjoyed flowers and gardening.

Surviving are his three children: Gaylord A. (Mary) Saetre, Long Prairie; Dr. Susan Saetre, St. Cloud, MN; and Jon A. Saetre, Moorhead, MN; four brothers: Dr. Sydney (Yvonne) Saetre, Great Falls, MT; Judge Warren (Margaret) Saetre, Thief River Falls, MN; Judge Homer (Esther) Saetre, Battle Lake, MN; Roland (Janice) Saetre, Vining, MN; two sisters: Josephine (Robert) Johnson, Edina, MN; Clarice (Arthur) Espeland, Henning, MN; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and infant daughter, Karen.

Thomas "Rick" Andersen

Funeral services were held for Thomas "Rick" Andersen of Perham, MN (formerly of New York Mills) on Wednesday, June 23, 1999 at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church in New York Mills, MN with Pastor John Krueger officiating. The hymns were sung by the congregation with a solo by Pastor Krueger, accompanied by Tim Johnson.

Pallbearers were Dan Herron, Jason Vandermay, Ty Lane, Nathan Puckett, Nate Aker, Nick Foley, George Dupuis and Travis Grindstaff. Interment was in St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, New York Mills.

Thomas Richard Andersen, known as "Rick" to his friends and neighbors was born on March 21, 1980 at the Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Great Lakes, IL to Thomas C. and Deborah J. (Peavey) Andersen. In 1985 Rick moved to Moorhead, MN with his grandparents, Marvin and Judy Albaugh. He attended Moorhead Elementary School until 1991 when he returned to New York Mills. While in the 6th grade in New York Mills, Rick won the D.A.R.E. essay award, which was a very proud and important happening in his life. Rick was baptized and confirmed at St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church, New York Mills. He attended high school in New York Mills and worked at the Elders' Home for 2 1/2 years. He had also worked for Hansen Plumbing & Heating in Perham, Carr's Tree Service in Ottertail and was currently working for his uncle Rod at Wendt Construction in Perham.

On June 19, 1999, Rick passed away due to an automobile accident in Rush Lake Township, rural New York Mills, at 19 years of age. He had made a lot of nice friends in New York Mills and Perham, along with his family and relatives who will miss him dearly.

Preceding him in death were his mother, Deborah (Peavey) Matthews; great-grandparents, Elfie Lund and Joe and Isabelle Peavey and God-parent, Charles Johnson.

Surviving are two sisters, Natasha Matthews of Natick, MA and Nicole Queen of Las Vegas, NV; grandparents, Judy and Marvin Albaugh of New York Mills, MN and William Peavey of Corpus Christi, TX; great-grandparents, Howard and Stella Lund of Detroit Lakes, MN; two aunts, Laurie (Rod) Wendt of Vergas, MN and Kerstin Malmede of Natick, MA; uncle, Gordy (Barb) Lund of Fergus Falls, MN; 8 cousins: Kristy and Brandon Malmede of Natick, MA, Jared, Dillion and Brea Wendt of Vergas, MN and Jessica, Alex and Bethany Lund of Fergus Falls, MN; Godmother, Julie Johnson of New York Mills, MN; also many other relatives and a host of loving friends.

Arrangements were provided by the Karvonen and Son Funeral Home of New York Mills, MN.

Mildred Anderson

Funeral services were held for Mildred Anderson on Friday, May 28, 1999 at 11:00 a.m. at the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home in New York Mills, Minnesota with Pastor John Krueger officiating. The hymns "Amazing Grace" and "How Great Thou Art" were provided by Janet Tumberg. Mildred was laid to rest in Greenwood Cemetery in New York Mills, Minnesota.

Mildred Marie Sophia Anderson was born February 24, 1926 in New York Mills, Minnesota. Her parents were the late Andreas Emil and Hulda Sofia (Palolampi) Anderson. Mildred grew up in New York Mills. She graduated from the New York Mills High School in 1944. After high school Mildred worked at Yellowstone National Park for 10 years. She moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1954 where she worked for Red Cross as a secretary for more than 20 years. In the late 1980's Mildred had a stroke and then moved to New York Mills. She has been cared for at the Elder's Home in New York Mills since 1993. Mildred loved playing the organ and piano and enjoyed listening to music. Her love for music couldn't be stopped by her stroke, she could play the harmony and melody of songs with one hand. On May 26, 1999 Mildred passed away at the Elder's Home in New York Mills, Minnesota at 73 years of age. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Preceding Mildred in death were her parents and 3 brothers: Woodrow, George and Willard.

Surviving are: sister-in-law, Dorothy Anderson of New York Mills; 2 nephews: Gary (Carol) Anderson of Nevis and Rick (Ginger) Anderson of Plymouth; also numerous cousins, other relatives and a host of friends.

Arrangements were provided by the Karvonen & Son Funeral Home of New York Mills, Minnesota.

Alyce Ruikka

Funeral services were held for Alyce Ruikka on Tuesday, June 1, 1999 at the Apostolic Lutheran Church in New York Mills, Minnesota with Pastor Don Salo officiating. The hymns were sung by the congregation, accompanied by Janet Tumberg. The pallbearers were Scott Juvrud, Brian Juvrud, Marlin Hammje, Mike Juvrud, Aaron Juvrud and Adam Juvrud. The honorary pallbearers were Leo Barthel, Howard Ojala, William Wiliman and Tom Nilsson. Alyce was laid to rest in Woodland Cemetery, New York Mills, Minnesota.

Alyce Cora Ruikka was born August 4, 1921 in New York Mills, Minnesota, the daughter of Fred and Martha (Walimaa) Mattila. On October 1, 1938 Alyce was united in marriage with Ahto Ruikka in Sisseton, South Dakota. Their marriage was blessed with a daughter, Janice. Alyce worked as a nursing assistant and physical therapist for several years at the Perham Memorial Home in Perham, Minnesota. She also worked at the Elder's Home in New York Mills as a housekeeper for 14 years. For most of her life Alyce has lived in rural New York Mills. She was very creative and enjoyed knitting, quilting, ceramics and Finnish and Sami History. Alyce was actively involved at the Finn Creek Museum, New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, Senior Art & Crafts Center and many other community projects. She was also a member of the Minnesota/Finnish Historical Society. She had a very special relationship with her grandchildren (and they loved her). Alyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ahto; daughter, Janice "Bunny" Paavola and grandson, Mark Juvrud.

Alyce is survived by her brother Marlin (Ruby) Hammje of Mason City, Iowa; sister Marion Jean McKeen and her two sons: John and Kenny of Hanford, California; grandchildren: Scott Juvrud of Cambridge; Brian (Kathy) Juvrud and their son, Tyler of Osceola, Wisconsin; granddaughter-in-law, Lorraine Juvrud of Glenwood and her sons: Michael of St. Paul and Aaron and Adam of Glenwood; uncle, William Waliman of Wadena; 6 sister-in-laws: Mim Saarela, Imbi Johnston and Ina Persons all of New York Mills, Florence Ruikka of Battle Lake, Pauline Ruikka and Betty Ruikka both of Minneapolis; brother-in-laws: Einar Saarela of New York Mills and Woodrow (Audrey) Ruikka of Redondo Beach, California; many cousins, nephews, friends and neighbors.
