Walter Harrom

Funeral services for Walter Harrom will be held on Thursday, June 3 at 2:00 p.m. at Immanuel Lutheran church in Dent, MN with Rev. Larry Schmidt officiating. Walter passed away on Sunday, May 30 at Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, MN.

Walter was born February 2, 1917 in Center, Nebraska. He was the son of Ole and Amanda Hirshland Harrom. He grew up and worked in that area until the start of World War II. He served in the Army as a Corporal.

Walter married Lillian Halverson on June 9, 1945 in Hastings, Nebraska. They farmed in Winnetoon, NE until moving to Minnesota in 1958 and farmed in the Star Lake area near Dent, Minnesota for 39 years. Walter loved his family and friends, his land, horses and square dancing.

Walter is survived by his wife, Lillian, Dent, MN, 2 sons: Mark (Mary) of Breckenridge, MN; Kenneth of Dent, MN; one daughter, Carol (Mike) McIlvain of Dent, MN; two brothers: Ole (Esther) of Northfolk, Nebraska; Louis (Marcella) Redding, CA.; 5 sisters: Ann Hintz of Northfield, Nebraska; Martha Collins of Scottsbluf, Nebraska; Betty Carlson of Sacremento, CA; Edna Harrom of Kansas City, MO; Mrs. Marvin (Violet) Becker of Lower Lake, CA; 5 grandchildren and one great grandson.

Maureen Ann Krulyac
Maureen Ann Krulyac, 59, of Greeley, Colo. died on May 27, 2002, at the University of Colorado Hospital in Denver. She had lived in Raton for 15 years. Maureen was born on Feb. 10, 1943, in Kansas City, Mo., to Robert and Mary (Scanlon) Wilson.

She graduated from Cortez High School in Cortez, Colo., in 1961. Maureen had just attended her 40th year class reunion this past year. She was a very outgoing 'people' person. She never met a stranger and was always willing to help others. She was a caring person and spent her working life as a home health care provider. She was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church. Church was a big part of Maureen's life and most of her social life centered around St. Peter's.

Preceding her in death were her parents and a daughter, Michelle Krulyac. Survivors are brother, Ed Wilson of Calif.

Memorial services for Maureen Krulyac were held on May 30 at St. Peter's Catholic Church. Maureen will be inurned in Raton near her deceased daughter, Michelle.

Mary Jane Segura Schank
Civil servant
Mary Jane Segura Schank, 47, of Licking, Mo., was born Feb. 24,1955, to Cipriano and Margaret Segura in Raton and departed this life May 21, 2002, at the University Hospital and Clinic in Columbia, Mo.

She graduated from Raton High School and went on to serve in the U.S. Army for two years. She received her Masters Degree in psychology and an Associates Degree in business administration. She continued to serve in the Armed Forces as a civil servant and received accreditations and merits.

She traveled around the world with her immediate family. She was a selfless devotee to various animal rights organizations and has saved many animals herself. She lived for her family and friends and was always willing to lend a helping hand. She will be greatly missed by many.

She was preceded in death by her father Cipriano Segura, grandmother Viola Cruz and niece Tina; also her 'other' children: Lindsay, Puppy, Biscuit, Sassy, Meatball and Mischief.

She is survived by her husband Clifford Michael Schank, a son, Jeremiah Michael Schank, her mother Margaret Segura, her father and mother-in-law Clifford and Mary Schank; sisters Julia Fernandez, Joan Troublefield and Patty MacLean; brothers Carlos, Michael and John Dean Segura; brother-in-law Bobby Troublefield; sisters-in-law Denise Segura, Anita Segura and Carol Schank; nephews Rollie, Crawdad, Nolan, Seth, Elijah and Trevor; nieces Cippie, Amber, Carol Lynn, Dee Dee, JoAnna, Katlin and Rebecca; one great-nephew Trevor Alex; also numerous beloved family members; and last but not least her 'other' babies: Buster, Diva, Koochie, Precious, Princess, Lucky and Junior.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday, June 2, at 1 p.m. at the Holiday Classic dining room.

Lorna R. Strand
Lorna R. Strand, 16, died Sunday morning, May 26, 2002. Lorna Strand was born July 13, 1985, in Tucumcari. She was a sophomore at the San Jon High School in San Jon. She attended the Methodist Church.

Surviving Lorna is her father, Shane Strand of Tucumcari; her mother and husband, Nadine and Gail Overbay of Raton; her brother, Arlan Strand of Tucumcari; her paternal grandparents, Darvan and Jeanette Strand of Tucumcari; her maternal grandmother, June King of Las Vegas, N.M.; as well as numerous uncles and aunts.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, May 30, in the Center Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Seymour and Lance Robbins officiating. Burial followed in the Tucumcari Memorial Park Cemetery. The family suggests for those who wish donations may be made to the Lorna R. Strand Memorial Fund at the Wells Fargo Bank in Tucumcari in memory of Lorna R. Strand.

Minnie S. Travis
Waitress
Minnie S. Travis, age 96, passed away on May 28, 2002 at St. Mary Corwin Hospital in Pueblo, Colo.. She was born April 14, 1906 in Ocate to Vincent Padilla and Lillian (Fraker) Padilla.

Minnie was a life long resident of Raton and a renowned waitress at the El Portal and Sweet Shoppe restaurants. She was also a member of St. Patrick/St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Raton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Walter, Wiley, Elmer and Fred Padilla and niece Joan Cornay.

She is survived by sisters Stella Padilla and Zalma Ortiz of Raton, niece Gloria Daughterty of Raton, nephews Fred Ortiz, Vernon Wallace of Albuquerque, Bob Padilla of Raton, Rudy Ortiz of Barstow, Calif., Bobby Ortiz of Farmington and numerous great nieces and nephews.

There was a graveside service at the Fairmont Cemetery in Raton on Thursday, May 30. Arrangements under the direction of Mullare-Murphy Funeral Home.

Roberta M. 'Dolly' Kain
Owner, Dolly's Beauty Shop
Roberta M. (Dolly) Kain, 88, of Raton, passed away Tuesday, May 28, 2002, in Raton. She was born Oct. 5, 1913, in Cross Roads, Texas, the daughter of Williams Thomas and Molly Anding Williams.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband LeRoy Kain in 1994. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Raton and a member of the VFW in Raton. She was a beautician and had owned and operated Dolly's Beauty Shop in Raton for many years.

Roberta is survived by one sister, Florence Willingham of Houston, one sister-in-law, Ruth Hull of Littleton, Colo., five nieces, Patricia Bachmuth of Acworth, Ga., Molly Harper of Tempe, Ariz., Nancy Horsley of Houston, Gail Rideley of Arlington, Texas, and Kathleen Proffitt of Raton; six nephews, Billy Joe Dean of Dennison, Texas, Michael Kelly of Columbus, Mo., Jess Hull of Omaha, Neb., Lamont Hull of Denver, Ronald Kain of Dallas and Bob Kain of Texas. Numerous great, great-great and great-great-great nieces and nephews also survive.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, June 1, at 10 a.m. at the Fairmont Cemetery in Raton with Dan Harkness officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations made be made to the Raton Humane Society. Arrangements for Roberta M. Kain are under the direction of the Yaksich-Long Funeral Home.

Harry Lee Adams
Local rancher
Harry Lee Adams, 94, died on Jan. 24, 2002, in Raton. Lee was born in the territory of Oklahoma in the settlement of Durham, Okla., on March 26, 1907, to William and Martha Virgina Adams, the eighth of nine children.

The Adams family moved to New Mexico in 1914. During Lee’s younger years, he worked for various ranches in and around Clayton and Folsom area. Lee started punching cattle at the age of 16 on the Cross L Ranch near Folsom. Lee worked for and retired after 31 years from the Colorado Interstate Gas Co. He spent most of the past year back at the Cross L. Ranch.

Lee married Wanda Lopez in 1929. She preceded him in death in December 1987. He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Alice Lee, in November 1994 and one great granddaughter, Machelle Pagett in 1997.

Lee is survived by son Don Adams and wife Darlene of Folsom; daughter Jeanne Pagett and husband Vic of Raton; son-in-law Tom Taylor of Aurora, Colo.; 16 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter also survive.

Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary was held on Saturday, Jan. 26, at St. Patrick’s/St. Joseph’s Catholic Church recited by the Legion of Mary. Solemn Mass of the Resurrection followed with Rev. Father Guy Roberts as the celebrant. Interment followed at the Clayton Memorial Cemetery, Clayton.

The family requests Memorials to the donor’s favorite charity. Funeral arrangements for Harry Lee Adams under the direction of the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home.

Olga Macaron
Olga Macaron, 84, died on Jan. 25, 2002, at Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation. She was born on Sept. 15, 1915, in South A Brazil, the daughter of the late Elisa and Rachide Najar. She was a lifelong Raton resident and a member of St. Patricks/St. Josephs Catholic Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Nick in 1994 and daughter Helen Luksich in 1999.

Survivors include daughters Jeanette Fidel and husband Ed, Loretta Walker and husband Jerry, and Phyllis Cox and husband Buddy, all of Raton; sister Mary Nejar of Albuquerque; grandchildren Loretta Encinias and husband Paul, Raymond Luksich and wife Angel, Nickie McCarty and husband Monty, Nick and Deanna Cox, Teresa Kuchan and husband Clint, Brandy Duran and husband Fernando, Charles Luksich and wife Alicia, Sherry Bowers and husband Kurt, and Ernest Walker and wife Becky.

Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary was held on Monday, Jan. 28, at St. Patricks/St. Josephs Catholic Church recited by Knights of Columbus. Solemn Mass of the Resurrection followed with Rev. Fathery Guy Roberts as the celebrant. Interment followed in Mt. Calvary Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements for Olga Macaron are under the direction of the Alderette-Pomeroy Funeral Home.
Ramona M. Burmeister

Avon Lady
Ramona Marie Burmeister, 80, died on Jan. 25, 2002, at her home in Cimarron. She was born on April 16, 1921, in Springer, the daughter of the late Carlos and Lena (Romero) Montoya.

She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cimarron. She was preceded in death by daughter Bessie Romero and son Billy Burmeister. Ramona was a dedicated Avon Lady for 26 years. If anyone met Ramona, you would be a stranger once and a friend for life.

Ramona is survived by her husband A.J. “Slim” Burmeister of the home in Cimarron, brother Charles Montoya of Cimarron, daughters Lucille Marquez of Albuquerque, Doris Gonzales and husband Albert of Albuquerque, Bella Martinez and husband Mario of Cimarron, Linda Meyer and husband Calvin of Rolla, Mo., Judy LeDoux and husband Ernie of Cimarron; sons Dennis Casias and wife Patsy of Los Alamos, Robert Casias and wife Sheryl of Cimarron, Joseph Cruz and wife Debbie of Shawnee, Okla., Ronnie Burmeister and wife Laura of Raton, Scott Burmeister and wife Anita of Ellison Air Force Base, Alaska; special cousin Corky Montoya, 16 special granddaughters, 18 special grandsons, 17 great grandsons and 11 great granddaughters also survive. She leaves behind a countless number of friends and joins a countless number of friends in her new life.

Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary was held on Monday, Jan. 28, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Cimarron. Solemn Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 9:30 a.m. also at the church with Rev. Father C. John Brasher as the celebrant. Interment will follow in Mountain View Cemetery.

Frank E. Leal
Barber
Frank E. Leal went to be with our Lord on Jan. 12, 2002. He was born March 2, 1932 in Heck Canyon, New Mexico. He was formerly of Springer until he moved to Denver in the late fifties where he operated his own barber shop named “Frankie’s Barber Shop” until he fully retired approximately four years ago. He was a Korean Veteran serving with the U.S. Navy (1952-1956).

He was preceded in death by his parents Agapito (1938) and Eloisa Leal (1991), one infant sister and a nephew Michael McLane.

Survivors include his wife Euralia (Lala) of the home, one daughter, Christine Romero of Denver, one son, Frankie Leal of Denver, and foster son Ricky Sandoval, also of Denver. Also surviving him are five grandchildren, two great grandchildren, one sister Matilde (Jerome) McLane of Westminster, Colo., one brother, Mac (Evelyn) Leal of Springer, serveral nieces, nephews, aunts, an uncle and cousins.

Funeral services were held Thursday, Jan. 17, at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church in Denver with Father Brian Bricker officiating. Committal Service and Interment were held at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver. Serving as Pallbearers were Steve Jensen, Mac Leal, Ruben Martinez, Charlie Tafoya, Danny Tafoya and Jerry Tafoya.

Rena B. McMahon
Harding County teacher
Rena B. McMahon, 93, a lifelong resident of New Mexico, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2002. She is survived by her son, James E. McMahon of Bosque Farms, N.M., sister Lena Scheier of Silver City, and numerous nieces and nephews. Mrs. McMahon was preceded in death by her husband, Edward J. McMahon, and daughter Catherine McMahon.

She taught school in Harding County and Santo Domingo Indian School for many years until retiring in 1973. Mrs. McMahon was a member of the National Education Association, New Mexico Education Retirees and New Mexico Extension Service. She was also a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Peralta, N.M., where she served in the Alter Society.

Mass was celebrated Saturday, Jan. 26, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Peralta with Monsignor Fred Stadtmueller as the Celebrant. Interment took place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Raton. Pallbearers were Steve Menefee, Steve Scholl, Tom Bonomo, Paul Bonomo, Rob Bonomo and Jim Willis. Honorary pallbearer was Anselmo Cordova.

Should friends desire, contributions may be made to the American Parkinson’s Disease Association, 1250 Hylan Blvd., Staten Island, NY 10305. Funeral arrangements made by French Mortuary of Albuquerque.
