Earl Richard Sorom
Earl Richard Sorom, 69, of Las Vegas, died July 8, 2004.
He was born in Rushford Minnesota on Dec. 3, 1934 to Earl M. and Josephine Sorom. He graduated from Rushford High School and completed three years at University of Minnesota. He served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War from 1952 to 1956 as a meteorologist.
Mr. Sorom married Anna Mae Elliott on Dec. 19, 1959, in Austin, Minn.. He started work for REECO/EGG at the Nevada Test Site in June of 1955 and retired in 1995. During his time with the Nevada Test Site he was a Radiological field Operations Branch Chief, a Radiological Site Monitoring Support Superintendent and held other positions in radiological monitoring and safety engineering during his career and co-authored numerous papers.
Mr. Sorom joined Christ Lutheran Church in 1964 and had served on the church council.
He is survived by his three sons and their wives, Michael Sorom (Michelle), Richard Sorom, and Bill Sorom (Kate); six grandchildren; and a brother Jim Sorom (Arla) of Alden, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents Earl M. and Josephine Sorom and his brother Lloyd Sorom, all from Rushford Minnesota.
Mr. Sorom was involved with Boy Scouting for many years starting as a Webelos leader for Michael’s pack in 1971 and received the District Award of Merit, and completed Woodbadge training for adult development in January 1976. He was the Scout Master for troop 130 and committee member for troop 133 during his son’s youth.
He liked working on many woodworking projects, enjoyed tending to his garden, traveling, and loved watching football.

Hillard C. Torgerson
The funeral for Hillard C. Torgerson was July 24 at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church, the Rev. Wade Davick officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Torgerson, 85, of Burnsville, formerly of the Rushford area, died Wednesday (July 21, 2004) at Ebenezer Fairview Ridges Nursing Care Center in Burnsville of complications of pneumonia. He suffered a stroke on July 5.
Born June 21, 1919, in Whalan, he great up in North Prairie and Highland Prairie, Fillmore County, and as a youth did farm work in Minnesota and shocked wheat in North Dakota.
He graduated from Rushford High School in 1937, studied mathematics and teaching at Winona State College, where he played college football, and joined the Army in 1942. He attended military government school at Yale University for 18 months, was a decorated member of the military police, saw combat in France, Netherlands, Belgium and Bastogne, was wounded in 1944 and returned to the United States in 1946.
In 1947, he graduated from Luther College, where he was a starting guard on the football team for two seasons and a member of the Norse. He did graduate study in mathematics at Iowa State University in Ames and then was a teacher and coach in Calmar, Iowa. He began working for Standard Oil Co. in 1951 and later transferred to Storm Lake, Estherville and Sheldon, Iowa, and then to Norfolk, Neb. After his retirement from Standard Oil in April 1975, he moved to Burnsville and worked for realty firms, including Bermal-Smeby. From 1977 until his retirement in December 1990, he worked for the U.S. Post Office, Postal Data Service in suburban Minneapolis.
On Aug. 14, 1947, he married Helen Remund. Mr. Torgerson was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Burnsville and formerly served as president of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake and Estherville Lutheran Church. His interests included reading, politics and sports. He was a Minnesota Twins, Gophers and Vikings fan.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Thomas R. of Seattle, H. Robert (Lois) of Wilmington, Del., and Lyle (Gail) of New Hope, Minn.; a daughter, Ann Torgerson of Edina; five grandchildren; and a sister, Janet King, of Golden Valley.

Memorials are suggested to Luther College.
Hoff Funeral Homes-Rushford Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Connie R. Harrison
Connie R. Harrison, 42, of Wilson died Sunday (July 18, 2004) at her home.
She was born July 22, 1961, in Winona to William and Gladys (Mueller) Becker.
On Aug. 22, 1987, she married Michael A. Harrison in Winona. After graduation from Winona Senior High School, she worked at Goltz Pharmacy until earlier this year when she could no longer work due to illness.
Mrs. Harrison was a member of St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband, Michael; twin daughters, Kaysie and Kendra, at home; her parents, William and Gladys Becker of Winona; a brother, Dan (Sue) Becker of Winona; three sisters, Carol (Roger) Larson of Hart, Gloria (Roger) Tullius of Fountain City, Wis., and Cindy (Jeff) Harrison of Winona; father-in-law, Larry Overton of South Carolina; four sisters-in-law, Judy Caudill of North Carolina, Deb (Larry) Vomhof, Cindy (Ron) Lund, both of Chatfield, and Tina (John) Williams, Rushford; two brothers-in-law, Sam (Karen) Harrison, Lewiston, and David (Brenda) Harrison, Byron; 29 nieces and nephews and 17 great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Edward and Hattie (Hornberg) Mueller and Oliver and Florence (Stephens) Becker and mother-in-law, Geri Overton.
Funeral services were July 21 at St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Rev. Lyle R. Kath officiated.
Burial was in Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery, Wilson.

Donald Martin Johnson
Donald Martin Johnson, 69, of The Fremont Store, Fremont Township rural Lewiston, died Wednesday (July 14, 2004) at his home.
He was born March 10, 1935, in Clearbrook, Minn., the first child of Martin and Martha (Rydeen) Johnson.
He attended first grade in Clearbrook, second-eighth grades at Gilderhaus School in Dodge County. He graduated with honors from Lewiston High School in 1953.
Mr. Johnson graduated with honors from Southwest University at Marshall, Minn., with a Bachelors degree in Business Administration in 1975. With his family he reopened the Fremont Store in 1979.
He and Pauline Gregerson were married Dec. 11, 1981, via a conference call with Pauline in Alabama and Don in Minnesota. Mrs. Johnson died Dec. 10, 1997.
From his wheelchair Mr. Johnson was active throughout his life in many fields: as Marksman, fisherman, a member of 4-H, WA0EPX Hamm radio operator advanced status, Army MARS operator. He was the guiding force behind starting the Minnesota Handi Hams. In 1989 he was inducted in to the Winona County Fair Hall of Fame. As Fremont storekeeper he was friend, counselor, listener, debater, mentor, political analyst, tourist guide, sports fan, and lover of all animals. He was also a Master Chess Player.
Mr. Johnson is survived by his mother, Martha Johnson of Fremont; a brother David (Pat) Johnson of Fremont; a sister Mary (Roger) Nahrgang of Chandler, Ariz.; a sister-in-law Helen Johnson of Goodview, nieces; a goddaughter; nephews; great nephews.
His wife Pauline; father Martin; brother Derald; and great-great niece preceded him in death.
Funeral Services were July 18 at North Prairie Lutheran Church, the Rev. Ronald Warnes officiated. Burial was in Fremont Scotch Cemetery.

Edward L. Dvorak
Edward L. Dvorak, 94, of Rushford died Sunday (July 11, 2004) at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford.
He was born on April 1, 1910, in Money Creek Township of Houston County to John and Catherine (Kahoun) Dvorak. He attended Vinegar Hill School.
On October 5, 1938, he married Helen Tracy in Rushford. She died in February of 2001. He farmed on the family farm until 1990 when the couple moved to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Apartments where he lived until entering the nursing home in 2000.
Mr. Dvorak was a lifetime member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rushford where he had been on the church council and a member of the Vinegar Hill School Board. Farming and family were the center of his life.
He is survived by one son: Paul (Luanne) Dvorak of Rushford; one daughter Rose Marie (Harvey) Anderson of Woodbury, Minn.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Dvorak was preceded in death by his parents, and nine brothers and sisters.
There was a funeral mass on July 14 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rushford, the Rev. William Kulas officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Thomas J. Culhane
Thomas J. Culhane, 58, of Rushford, died Wednesday (July 7, 2004) at his home.
He was born on April 14, 1946, in Rushford to Daniel R. and Rose Margaret (Sheehan) Culhane. He grew up in Rushford, graduated from Rushford High School in 1964.
Mr. Culhane entered the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. After the service he lived in Las Vegas, Nev., where he lived until 1980. Mr. Culhane lived in Long Beach, Cal. from 1980 to ‘86, in Pickwick, Minn. from 1986 to ‘91, where he was the owner and operator of the Pickwick Inn. He lived in Winona from 1991 to ‘99, where he worked as a financial advisor. In 1999, he moved to his hometown of Rushford where he lived for the remainder of his life.
Mr. Culhane is survived by his loving partner Jean Fossey of Rushford; one brother Daniel J. (Mary) Culhane of Bloomington, Minn.; one sister Rose Marie (Edward) Bott of Las Vegas, Nev. several nieces and nephews and his faithful sidekick “Buck”.
He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
The funeral mass was July 12 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the Rev. William Kulas and the Rev. Tom Loomis officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Inez A. Olstad
Inez A. Olstad, 97 of Rushford died Monday (July 12, 2004) at her home.
She was born on Mar. 11, 1907, in Holt Township of Fillmore County to Ludwig O. and Lena (Johnson) Glenna. She was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran Church of Highland. The Highland Church was always so important to her because she helped in the building of it. She was a lifetime member of the Highland Church and was always very active there in circle and ladies aide.
On May 21, 1932, she married Gynther Olstad in Highland. She worked long and hard hours as she and Gynther farmed in the Rushford area until his death on April 3, 1984. Since then she has made her home with her daughter and son-in-law.
She is survived by two children: Linda (Richard) Berg of Rushford and Gene (Juliane) Olstad of Winona; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Inez was preceded in death by two brothers: Theron and Levi and two sisters: Luella and Verna (Jorde) and a little brother, Levi Clifford, who died when he was three years old.
Her favorite pastime was Going out to eat at Judy’s Café in Peterson and visiting with friends and family.
The funeral service will be at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, July 16, at First Lutheran Church in Highland with the Rev. Paul Johnson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Rushford Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

Irvin A. ‘Pete’ Boettcher
Irvin A. ‘Pete’ Boettcher, 85, of La Crescent, died on Wednesday (July 7, 2004) at the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse.
He was born on March 21, 1919 in Dakota Valley, Minnesota to Frank and Mary (Schumacher) Boettcher.
He married Doris Miennert on October 30, 1948 in Ridgeway. She died on September 3, 1982. He married Virginia Graham on July 5, 1997 in La Crescent.
Mr. Boettcher was a member of the church council and long time member of the cemetery board at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nodine. He farmed the majority of his life in the Nodine area before retiring and moving to La Crescent.
He is survived by his wife Virginia; two daughters Angela (Dan) Bunke of Winona and Wanda (Danny) Hanson of Rushford; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; one step-daughter, Alice (Eric) Rentilla of Hokah; two step-sons Jim (Teri) Graham of Nodine and Keith `Kip’ (Cheryl) Graham of La Crescent.
In addition to his first wife he was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and six brothers.
Funeral services were July 10 at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, La Crescent, Minnesota, Rev. Paul A. Ibisch officiated. Burial was in St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Nodine.
