Rene G. Bourgeault
Rene 'Frenchy' G. Bourgeault of LaVaque Rd. in Proctor died Mon., Apr. 12, 2004, in St. Mary's Medical Center. He was 70.

Rene was born Feb. 9, 1934 in St. Boniface, Canada to Eugene and Marie (Beaulieu) Bourgeault and they moved to the Duluth area in 1938. Rene was a union carpenter for various area contractors until his retirement. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church, the French Club, and Carpenters Union 361. He loved to hunt, fish, and do woodworking and cooking.

Rene was preceded in death by his parents, wife Marcy in 1981, and his sister Yvonne Cherro.

Rene is survived by his companion of 21 years Joyce M. Ritchie, daughter Linda Shaw of Ore., sons Rene (Larrissa) of Colo., Gary (Sally) of Ky., and Bob of Carlton, Minn., brothers Arthur (Margaret) of Mpls. and Marcel of Duluth, sisters Lucille Swanson of Duluth and Eleanor (Gene) Disch of Pike Lake, 11 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Services were held last week at St. Rose Catholic Church, Proctor. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery.

Leonard C. Schneider
Leonard C. Schneider, 77, formerly of Meadowlands died Thurs., April 15, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospice.

He was born in Waite Park, Minn. He was a 1944 graduate of Cathedral High School in St. Cloud, Minn. He served in the Merchant Marines from 1944 through 1946, and was a World War II Veteran, receiving the Army Occupation Medal (Japan), United Nations Service Medal, one Overseas Bar, and the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star. He served our country from 1944 through 1956. He was an avid deer hunter, enjoyed fishing and being outdoors. He was employed 20 years as a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, Duluth. He was a member of VFW Post 137 and had been a member of St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Pike Lake.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Elaine Eizenhoefer, and brother Norbert.

He is survived by Marion Lodoen Schneider of Proctor, his best friend and wife of 31 years, daughter Lenore Siemsen (Randy) of Lino Lakes, stepson Paul (Janet) Erickson of St. Louis Park, brothers Robert (Joni), of Circle Pines, Herbert (Myra) of Sheboygan, Wis., sister Mary Mae (Eldred) Vanderbloemen of Ruskin, Fla., grandsons Wayne and Matthew Siemsen, and many nieces and nephews.

At Leonard's request, no services will be held. A private graveside gathering will be held at Sunrise Memorial Park Cemetery, Hermantown, at a later date, including military rites.

Kim A. Lind
Michael Lind of Proctor is mourning the death of his brother, Kim A. Lind. The Gary, Ind. resident passed away at Methodist Hospital Southlake Campus on Thurs., Apr. 15, 2004. He was 49.

Kim, who was formerly from Cloquet, was a machinist. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran.

Kim was preceded in death by his father John 'Jack' Lind, his mother Leatrice Mae (Petite) Lind, and a brother Troy E. Lind.

He is survived by his wife Faye, one son, one daughter, one step-daughter, three stepsons, one granddaughter, three step-granddaughters, one step-grandson, three other brothers Keith (Cindy) Lind, Hal (Boochi) Lind, Kevin (Linda) Lind, all of Cloquet, a sister Loretta (Scott) Erickson of Cloquet, and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Thurs., Apr. 22, 2004, in Nelson Funeral Care in Cloquet. Visitation will continue on Fri., Apr. 23, 2004, from 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. memorial service also in Nelson Funeral Care, followed by a luncheon at the Fond Du Lac Reservation E.N.P. Center.

Marie F. Kothlow
Marie F. Kothlow, who taught first grade at Proctor Elementary School for over 40 years, died Fri., Apr. 16, 2004, at St. Mary's Medical Center. She was 95.

A lifelong Duluth resident, she was born April 20, 1908. She was a 1925 graduate of Central High School and a 1927 graduate of Duluth Teachers College. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education from the University of Minnesota. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and active with its ladies circles.

She was preceded in death by her parents and five siblings.

Marie is survived by her son George (Jennifer) Brook-Kothlow of Carmel Valley, Calif., granddaughters Ingrid and Marit, great granddaughter Britta, all of Calif., sister Gudrun Larson of Costa Mesa, Calif., and many nieces and nephews.

Burial was in Park Hill Cemetery.

Robin Everett Ware
Robin 'Bob' Everett Ware died unexpectedly Fri., Apr. 16, 2004, at St. Mary's Hospital. He was 75.

He worked on the Ore boats on Lake Superior, served for four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and was an engineer for N.P. and B.N. railroad. He always worked additional jobs to provide for his family such as unloading freight for Hermantown Lumber, building P.C. Toppers, and a policeman in Proctor. He was very active at Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Proctor as well. He married Patricia Ann Miller September 17, 1950. He tried to appear rough and tough on the outside, but those who knew him saw right through to his pure heart that was full of love on the inside. Robin had many friends who will miss him dearly.

He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years Patricia, children Cheryl (Russ) DeWall of Alborn, Robin (Nancy) Ware, Jr. of Esko, Glenn (Carlene) Ware of Nickerson, Minn., Chevra (Kelly) Ziegler of Alborn, June (Ed) Fink of Bemidji, 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services were held earlier in the week at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Burial in Union Cemetery, Hermantown.

Odin H. Thorsvik
Odin H. Thorsvik, 88, of Hermantown died Tues., Apr. 13, 2004, at his residence with his family by his side.

He was born Oct. 2, 1915 in Duluth to Oscar and Alma (Wicklund) Thorsvik. Odin married Alice Wallgren Oct. 2, 1940. He retired from the DM&IR Railroad. Odin enjoyed hunting, fishing, reading, stock car racing, and he loved watching the ships come and go from Canal Park. His family was the center of his life and he especially enjoyed visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He will always be remembered for his gift of storytelling.

He was preceded in death by his wife Alice in 1989, son Dale in 1973, daughter Paula in 1965, great-grandson David in 2003, and brother Arnold in 1974.

Odin is survived by his children David Thorsvik of Proctor, Judi (Jerry) Kahrs of Calif., Jean Breemeersch of Duluth, Duane Thorsvik of St. Cloud, Karen (Gary) Melin of Hermantown, Patricia Chicos of Proctor, Roger (Linda) Thorsvik of Coon Rapids, Chris (Ed) Kelly of Superior, Roberta Thorsvik of Duluth, Sally (Bob) Larson of United Arab Emerites, and Scott (Caroline) Thorsvik of Cloquet, 22 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and five sisters-in-law Muriel Wallgren of Saginaw, Norma Wallgren of Duluth, Jackie Wallgren, Elaine Wallgren and Fran Belanger all of Florida.

Services were held Apr. 17. Burial was in Union Cemetery in Hermantown.

Doris Eleanor Nettleton
Doris Eleanor Nettleton of Proctor passed away Mon., Apr. 12, 2004, while on vacation in Gulfport, Miss. She was 81.

She was born Feb. 24, 1923 to Kristian and Kristiane (Tangen) Kirkeng. Doris graduated from Proctor High School in 1941 and married Earl Nettleton on Nov. 16, 1942. She graduated from Duluth Beauty School and later worked as a beautician in downtown Duluth and Proctor. In 1960, Doris went to work for Norwest Bank until retirement as a supervisor in 1984. She enjoyed sewing, baking cookies, camping, fishing, music, playing the organ and spending time with her grandchildren and family. Doris also enjoyed attending reunions that she helped to organize with her friends from the class of 1941.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Earl in 1990, and sisters Ruby and Gladys.

Doris is survived by her daughter Karen (Harry) Samuelson, Jr. of Long Beach, Miss.; son Dennis (Patricia) Nettleton of Duluth, grandchildren Melisa (Richard) Lanthier of Duluth, Grant (Elizabeth) Nettleton of Proctor and Wes Nettleton of Blaine, Minn., and great-grandchildren Paige and Blake Lanthier and Vaughn Nettleton.

Funeral services were held last week in Immanuel Lutheran Church, Proctor. Burial is in Sunrise Memorial Park.

Jerome M. Zauhar
Thomas Zauhar of Pike Lake is saddened by the death of his brother Jerome M. Zauhar. The Superior resident died Tues., Apr. 13, 2004, in St. Francis Nursing Home in the Park. He was 65.

Jerry is survived by his wife Clarice of Wascott, Wis., a son, a daughter, four other brothers, a sister, and four grandchildren.

Private Family Services have been held.

David Jennings Harrison
David Jennings Harrison lost his 2-1/2 year battle with colon cancer, Sun., May 2, 2004, in Duluth. He was 38.

He was born July 12, 1966 in St. Paul, Minn. to Bill and Judy Harrison. Dave attended school at Park Point Elementary, Eveleth Junior High, and graduated from Proctor High School in 1984. He joined and served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps for four years, where he was stationed in the Persian Gulf as a sniper and a scout swimmer. He shot on the National Marine Corps Rifle team where he won the Virginia State 1000-yd. match. After leaving the Marines, he attended Lake Superior College and UMD. He worked with many friends on the D.W.P. Railroad on the track crew and as a dispatcher. Dave enjoyed hunting rocks and animals, and fishing with his many good friends on the Gunflint Trail and on Lake Nipigon. He also spent many mornings with his friends golfing on the Pike Lake Golf Course.

Dave is survived by his parents Bill and Judy Harrison of Duluth, brother Daniel (Jennifer) Harrison of Esko, sister Heidi Harrison of Virginia, his close friend and companion Becky Fink and her children Courtney and Kyle, grandmother Meg Kloek of Duluth, and special nephews Matthew and Zachary, friend Sue Mattson, and his dog Zeke.

A celebration of Dave's life, was held yesterday. A Memorial Service with military honors was accorded by the Duluth Combined Honor Guard. Burial at Park Hill Cemetery.

Edward John Soland
Edward 'Eddie' John Soland of Saginaw passed away Thurs., Apr. 29, 2004, at Bayshore Health Center. He was 59.

He was born October 5, 1944, in Norway, MI. Eddie was born with Down Syndrome. He worked at Floodwood Services and Training.

Eddie was preceded in death by his parents Orlo and Nancy Soland.

He is survived by his brother Orlo (Sandra) Soland of Ore., sister Sonja (Jack) Jyring of Duluth, caregivers Ginny, Dan, Tara, and Ashley Tuominen of Saginaw, special friends Doug and Irene Pirila and Vern.

A memorial service will be held Fri., May 7, 2004, at 1:00 p.m. at the Floodwood Community Center.

Donald Duane Sornberger
Services will be held tomorrow, Friday, for Donald Duane Sornberger. He died Sun., May 2, 2004, at his W. Skyline Parkway home surrounded by his family. He was 67.

He was born March 17, 1937 in Duluth to William and Tyra (Tast) Sornberger. Don graduated from Hermantown High School in 1955. He worked as an electrician for the D.M.&I.R. Railroad in Proctor and then the IBEW Local 242 until his retirement in 1999.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Bill.

Don is survived by his loving wife Carole, daughter Sherri (Jerry) Komrosky and granddaughter Kristin, and grandson Kraig of Moorhead, sons Greg (Kim) and grandsons Derrick and Brandon of Sauk Rapids and Rick (Aimee), and grandsons Jordan and Eric and granddaughter Kailey of Ramsey, sister-in-law Helga Sornberger of Rochester, mother-in-law Ruby Karger of Duluth, and many friends.

Memorial service is at 1 p.m. Fri., May 7, 2004, at the Cremation Society of Minnesota Chapel, 4100 Grand Ave. with Pastor Jack Heidenreich officiating.
