Geneva F. Mann
Geneva F. (Peterson) Mann, 73, of Rushford died Monday (July 5, 2004) at her home.
She was born on July 6, 1930, in LaCrosse, Wis. to Freddie and Gena (Flatten) Peterson. She attended grade school at Lower Looney Valley School and graduated from Houston High School. She attended Winona State College and majored in Elementary Education.
She taught in Wabasha, Minn. and on December 30, 1950, she married Daniel Mann who was going into Federal Service with company A MN 135th. On his return from the service they moved to Rushford where she taught in the elementary school from 1952 to 1995.
They enjoyed travel, working on her home farm, ballroom dancing and the company of many friends. Mrs. Mann was a member of the Rushford Lutheran Church and the Rebecca circle there, National Education Association, Rushford Education Association, Winona Area Ballroom Dance Club and the Rochester Exchange Club Travel Series.
She is survived by her husband Daniel; one brother, Allen (Ramona) Peterson of LaPorte City, Iowa; two sisters-in-law: Margie Sorenson of Chatfield, Minn. and Anna May Pierre of Esko, Minn. and several nieces and nephews.
Geneva was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Lynden.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. on today, July 8, 2004, at Rushford Lutheran Church with the Rev. Roger Michaelson officiating. Burial will be in the Money Creek Cemetery in Money Creek, Minn. Friends may call one hour prior to the service today at the church.
Memorials may be directed to the charity of donor’s choice, or the Geneva Mann Scholarship for Education Fund.

Sonja Marie Mark
Sonja Marie Mark passed away Thursday (July 1, 2004) after a long battle with cancer.
She was born in Rushford, Minn. on October 10, 1939, graduated from Winona Senior High School and the University of Nebraska College of Nursing.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother.
She is survived by her husband, Lt. Col John Mark (Ret), children: Kim and Stuart Paulson, Vikki and Steven Graham, Dr. Karen Mark, and John and Paige Mark; six grandchildren; two sisters, nieces and nephew.
Graveside services will be held 11:30 a.m. today (July 8) at the Silver Creek Cemetery, Houston, Minn.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials to LCM Building Fund - LCM, 114th and West Road, Omaha, Neb. 68144.
Hoff Funeral Homes - Houston Chapel is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

Jamie Elaine Baertsch
Jamie Elaine Baertsch, infant daughter of Kurt and Marjo Jill Baertsch, was stillborn Thursday (July 1, 2004) at Olmsted Community Hospital in Rochester.
Survivors include her parents, Kurt and Marjo; maternal grandparents, Maynard and Marjo Johnson of Rushford; paternal grandmother, Romelle Baertsch of Eyota; maternal great-grandmother, Adelaide Halvorson of Rushford; paternal great-grandmother, Esther Kluender of Goodview, and several aunts and uncles.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, James Baertsch.
There was a funeral mass on July 7 at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Elba, the Rev. James Callahan officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery in Elba.

Evelyn B. Swiggum
Evelyn B. Swiggum, 91, of Edina, formerly of St. Cloud and Rushford, passed away Friday (July 2, 2004).
In 1950 she and her husband built and operated Swiggum’s Motel and Cafe in St. Cloud for many years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Justin; a grandson; and twin brother, Arthur Peterson.
She is survived by son, Robert (Toni) of Prior Lake; daughter, Mary Solberg of Bloomington; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends.
There will be a memorial service at 7 p.m. with a reception to follow at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 7110 France Ave. So., Edina (952-924-4100). Interment will be 2 p.m. July 10 at the cemetery in Peterson.

Evelyn B. Johnson
Evelyn B. Johnson, 89, of Money Creek died Friday (July 2, 2004) at Gundersen-Lutheran Medical Center in LaCrosse, Wis.
She was born on Nov. 12, 1914, at Vinegar Hill near Rushford, Minn. She was raised at Vinegar Hill and graduated from Rushford High School.
On Jan. 16, 1937, she married Earl G. Johnson at the Thompson home on Vinegar Hill. She worked at Winona State University for several years. She was a lifetime member of the Money Creek United Methodist Church and was a member of the U.M.W. group there.
Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Eastern Star and the Houston Garden Club. She enjoyed playing 500 and Bridge, quilting, and she was an excellent cook, especially Scandinavian cooking. She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by three sons: Lowell (Donna) Johnson of DeWitt, Iowa, James (Joan) Johnson of Winona, Minn. and Steven (Lynne) Johnson of Viroqua, Wis.; two daughters: Eline (Arthur) Kleist of Rushford, Minn. and Carla Johnson of Money Creek, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three brothers: Clifford (Mathilda) Thompson Sr. of Lewiston, Harold (Beverly) Thompson of St. Charles, and Martin Thompson of Rushford; two sisters: Madeline Gudmundson of Rushford and Lillian (Elmer) Reps of Utica. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, a daughter JoAnne, a son in infancy, and four siblings.
Funeral services were July 6 at the Money Creek United Methodist Church in Money Creek, Pastor Fauntie Wilcoxon officiated. Burial was in the Money Creek Cemetery.

Claude R. Cordes
Claude R. Cordes, 58, of Vinegar Hill near Rushford died Wednesday (June 30, 2004) at his home.
He was born on January 7, 1946, in LaCrosse, Wis. to Willard and Myrtle (Doblar) Cordes.
He attended Vinegar Hill School and Rushford High School. He farmed on Vinegar Hill for all of his life. He was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Rushford.
Mr. Cordes enjoyed any activity that allowed him to be outdoors in the summer, especially, fishing, hunting, barbecues, driving, mowing lawn, and picking up cans on the road-sides. He also loved to bake, and spend time with his grandchildren.
He is survived by three daughters: Channon Cordes of Rushford, Minn., Margaret (Troy) Roe of Hayfield, Minn. Amanda (Josh) Bedard of Dunkerton, Iowa.; one son, Billy Ray (Tegan) Cordes of Rushford, Minn.; five grandchildren; one brother, Dennis Cordes of Houston; and one sister: Mary Ellen (Clark) Cords of Rushford.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services were July 2, at the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Rushford, the Rev. Douglas Heuiser officiated. Burial was in the Money Creek Cemetery in Money Creek.

Edna M. Fossum
Edna M. Fossum, 88, died Tuesday (June 29, 2004) at Community Memorial Hospital.
She was born May 18, 1916, in Lanesboro to Oscar and Amelia Tompte Gravos. She married Orville R. Fossum Nov. 22, 1932, in Preston. He preceded her in death Sept. 21, 2001.
She was a member of Central Lutheran Church. Mrs. Fossum was a homemaker and the focus of her life was her family. She was a very loving and compassionate mother and grandmother. She loved to bake and cook and among her hobbies were crocheting and home decorating.
She is survived by sons, LaVern (Barbara) Fossum of Ft. Myers, Fla., and James (Pam) Fossum of Green Bay, Wis.; daughters, Judy (Dick) Hanson of Winona, and Shirley (Harvey) Kieffer of Robbinsdale; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; sisters, Norma Bratberg of Rushford and Doris Beissert of East Bernard, Tex.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brothers, Palmer, Orrin and James.
Funeral services were July 2 at Central Lutheran Church, the Rev. Michelle Rem officiated. Burial was in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to Central Lutheran Church.

Leila Mae (Greethurst) Christopherson
On June 26, 2004, Leila Christopherson died at her home in Hidden Valley.
She was born April 18, 1924, to Harry and Harriet (Boynton) Greethurst. She was raised in the Fremont area, where she met her husband of 63 years Earl Christopherson. On July 15, 1940, they were united in marriage.
They raised their family and operated the Wyattville Garage for many years.
She is survived by her four children, Judy Hill (Clifford Williamson) of Tatum, Tex., James (Carol) Christopherson of Lewiston, Jean Jonsgaard of Rollingstone, and Thomas (Judi) Christopherson of Lewiston; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Wayne Greethurst of Rushford; and a sister, Gertrude Thompson of Wykoff.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; a brother, Edwin Greethurst; and grandsons, Terry and David Hill.
Funeral services were July 2 at Fawcett-Junker Funeral Home, the Rev. Dr. Donald D. Budd, pastor of McKinley United Methodist Church, officiated.

Arthur N. Wheaton
Arthur N. Wheaton, 94, of Houston died Monday (June 21, 2004) at the Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.
He was born on April 30, 1910, in Mound Prairie Township of Houston County to John and Caroline (Dahl) Wheaton.
He was raised at Mound Prairie and graduated from Caledonia High School. He attended the Northern Iowa University. Arthur farmed until serving his country during WWII in Europe from 1942 to 1945. On June 2, 1949, he married Cora Arneson in Caledonia. Arthur farmed in Crystal Valley and Mound Prairie and did construction work in the LaCrosse area.
He was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston where he had been on the church council, the Arnet-Sheldon American Legion Post in Houston, Mystic Star Masonic Lodge No. 69 of Houston/Rushford, Mound Prairie Township board and the Money Creek Township board and township clerk.
Mr. Wheaton had a great love for sports, both playing sports and as a spectator. He especially enjoyed baseball, basketball and football and could often times be found listening to or watching one of his favorite teams.
He was devoted to his extended family and always enjoyed attending social gatherings.
He is survived by his wife, Cora; two sons, Glen Wheaton of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Neil and wife Sue Wheaton of Brookfield, Wisc.; three daughters, Linda Wheaton and her husband Amin Elmallah of Sacramento, Calif., Arlene Wheaton and her husband Greg Past of Garrison, Minn., and Suzanne Wheaton and her husband Paul Williams of San Jose, Calif.; ten grandchildren; one sister Ruth Doering of Houston and two half-brothers, Paul and wife Sharon Wheaton of Houston and Pete Wheaton of Sacramento.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Samuel and sister, Olive.
