Benjamin C. Hadley
Benjamin C. Hadley, 91, of Winona died Saturday (June 12, 2004) at Sauer Memorial Home.
He was born on Jan. 22, 1913, at Orr, N.D., to Walter and Elizabeth Crawford Hadley. He came to Winona in 1930.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Mr. Hadley married Orma Feine on Aug. 10, 1949, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Hart.
He worked as an iron worker in the construction industry, retiring in 1977. He is a member of St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, where he served two terms on the board of elders, one term on St. Martin’s School Board and was an usher. He was also a member of Local 512 Iron Workers Union.
He is survived by his wife, Orma; son, James (Mary) Hadley, Rushford; daughters, Christine Hadley, Diana Vaujin and Nancy Hadley, all of Winona; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one brother, Emery (Esther) Hadley, Des Moines, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and three brothers.
Funeral services were June 15 at St. Martin’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Rev. David Henslin officiated. Burial was at St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery, Hart. Military rites were provided by Leon J. Wetzel American Legion Post No. 9.

Vera M. Hanson
Vera M. Hanson, 83, of Houston, died Wednesday (June 16, 2004) at the Valley View Nursing Home in Houston.
She was born on May 15, 1921, in Yucatan Township of Houston County, Minn. to Thorvald and Katie (Kittelson) Halvorson. She lived all of her life in the Houston area.
She married Henry Hanson in LaCrescent on Sept. 15, 1945.
Mrs. Hanson was a member of Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston and many church groups there. She was a member of the Forget-me-not Garden Club, School volunteer for first and second grade, Senior Citizen volunteer, Valley View Nursing Home volunteer, Houston Hoedown committee member, Food Shelf volunteer, Nature Center volunteer, and was named the Houston County Senior Citizen of the Year in 2002.
Mrs. Hanson worked in LaCrescent, picking apples for the orchard, harvested turkeys on the Vince Poppe farm, cleaned houses, did Janitorial work at the Houston Public Schools, worked at the Houston Security Bank, and retired from Rush Products in Rushford after working there for 17 years. She had a very loving and warm personality. Her infectious smile and energy was felt by the entire community and she took particular delight in her grandchildren.
She is survived by one daughter, Diane (Duane) Lambrecht of New Ulm, Minn.; two sons: Chuck (Rita) Hanson of Winona, Minn. and Tom (Colleen) Hanson of Gahanna, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and one brother, Kenneth Halvorson.
The funeral service was June 19 at Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Houston, the Rev. Louise Stromberg officiated. Burial was in the Stone Church Cemetery.

Robert Matthew Iverson
Robert Matthew Iverson, 54, died Thursday (June 3, 2004) at the Good Shepherd Home in Rushford, where he was cared for beginning May 6.
Robert “Weeds” was born Dec. 15, 1949, in LaCrosse, Wis., to LaVelle Mae (Niggle) Iverson (Nesheim) and Robert Wayne Iverson.
He was baptized and confirmed at Rushford Lutheran Church, graduated from Rushford High School in 1967, and from Moorhead State with a B.S. in Art Education in 1973. He began teaching art in Wykoff in the fall of 1974 and was shared with Lanesboro starting in 1980. He taught a total of 27 1/2 years, including eight years at Peterson until consolidation with Rushford in 1990. He married Joyce Frieda Nolte at Rushford Lutheran on Dec. 21, 1974.
Mr. Iverson was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.
He is survived by his wife Joyce; son Jared Robert of Rushford; daughters Jessica Joy of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Stefani Mae of Rushford; and stepfather Norwin Nesheim and wife Jaerdis of Decorah, Iowa.
He liked to golf, fish, hunt, tell Ole and Lena jokes, and do woodworking and various projects around the home.
Funeral services were June 7 at Rushford Lutheran Church, the Rev. David Watson officiated. Burial was in Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.

Ernest C. Borgen
Ernest C. Borgen, 72, of Lanesboro died Tuesday (June 1, 2004) of cancer at his home.
He was born Aug. 13, 1931, in Lanesboro to Orie and Thelma Borgen. He attended Lanesboro High School and graduated in 1949.
Mr. Borgen was a veteran of the Korean War from 1951 to 1954 and earned a bronze star. He married Julia Johnson on March 27, 1954 in Lanesboro. He lived in Lanesboro, rural Fountain, rural Lanesboro and then moved back into Lanesboro in 1994.
Mr. Borgen was a farmer, a welder for the Minnesota Highway Department, and a self-employed welder and heavy equipment operator. He retired in 1994. He enjoyed fishing, hunting ginseng, playing cards, traveling, reading and doing crossword puzzles.
Mr. Borgen is survived by his wife, Julia Borgen; one son, James (Veronica) Borgen of Kansas City, Mo.; three daughters, Gwen (Randy) Harmon of Lanesboro, Carolyn (Michael Bell) Borgen of Oronoco, and Kathy (Gary) Wade of Rushford; 11 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one-sister, Joyce Miller of Rochester.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Gail Peterson.
A memorial service was held June 4 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lanesboro, the Rev. Kerry Eversole officiated.

Charles Andrew Schroeder
Charles Andrew Schroeder, 71, of Silver Bay, Minn., died of cancer on Tuesday (May 11, 2004) in Silver Bay.
He was born on May 11, 1933, in Ortonville, Minn., to Arnold and Marion Schroeder.
He is survived by one brother, A. James (Shirley) Schroeder and one sister, Barbara F. (Howard) Borgen.
Mr. Schroeder was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Donald F. Schroeder.
He was a part-time employee for the U.S. Forest Service at Tufte. He was a member of the North Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro.
A memorial service was held on June 5 at Hoff Funeral Homes - Rushford Chapel in Rushford. Burial was in the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery.

Frederick E. Halverson
Frederick E. Halverson, 85, passed away May 12, 2004 in St. Paul.
He is survived by is beloved wife of almost 60 years.
Mr. Halverson was born April 2, 1919 in Cottonwood County.
He attended the University of Minnesota-St. Paul campus graduating in 1941 with degrees in Agricultural Education and Economics.
Mr. Halverson taught vocational agriculture at Rushford High School from 1941 until his enlistment in the U.S. Army in March of 1943.
In 1956 Mr. Halvorson was hired by Midland Cooperative. He retired from Land O’Lakes Co-op (previously Midland Co-op) in 1984.
The funeral was held May 15 at St. Peder’s Lutheran Church, Minneapolis.

Laurence T. Laumb
Laurence T. “Windy” Laumb, 82, of Vinegar Hill, East of Rushford, died Monday (May 24, 2004) at his home.
He was born on Nov. 30, 1921, in Houston to Ole and Inga (Laugen) Laumb. He lived in the Rushford area all of his life.
On May 15, 1948, he married Milda Runge in Hart. He farmed for many years and worked at Tri-County Electric, Earl’s Sales and Service and Farmers Elevator.
He was a member of the Money Creek Town Board and St. Mark’s Lutheran Church where he was the last living charter member. He enjoyed deer hunting, horses, and visiting his friends (the do-little club) at Stumpy’s.
He is survived by three sons: Herman (Melanie) Laumb, LaVerne (Tami) Laumb, and Wesley Laumb, all of rural Houston; three daughters: Helen (Kenneth) Jacobson of rural Peterson, Dorothy (Joe) Himlie of Rushford, and LaVonne (Larry) Reps of Lewiston;. 19 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; one brother: Irvin (Marie) Laumb of Black, Mo.; and one sister: Doris Lawrenz of St. Charles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; two brothers, George and Ray; three sisters, Inger, Anna, and Velma; and one grandson, Darren Reps.
The funeral service will be at 1 p.m. on Sat., May 29, at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Rushford with the Rev. Douglas Heiuser officiating. Burial will be at the Rushford Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call from 4-8 p.m. on Friday at Hoff Funeral Homes - Rushford Chapel and one hour prior to the service on Saturday at the church.
The family prefers memorials to be directed to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

Judy J. Keller
Judy J. Keller, 63, of Peterson died Thursday (May 20, 2004) at the Whitewater Healthcare Center in St. Charles, Minn.
She was born on Feb. 20, 1941, in Elkader, Iowa, to Walter and Dolores (Hall) Szemkus. She Graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1959. She graduated from Mount Mercy College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa. She taught elementary school at Independence and Cedar Rapids, Iowa for a number of years. In later years she did secretarial work and substitute teaching. She married Lyle Keller on Oct. 7, 1989, in Cedar Rapids.
She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rushford, The Ashley Chapter of the National Society of the daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Keller was a descendent of Revolutionary War Veteran, Abel Hannah Baker, of Connecticut.
She is survived by her Husband, Lyle; a brother, Roger Szemkus of Garber, Iowa; an uncle, Clair Hall of Chicago, Ill., four nieces and one nephew.
Mrs. Keller was preceded in death by her parents and her sister Faye Szemkus.
There was a funeral mass May 26 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Rushford, the Rev. William Kulas officiated. Burial was at Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona.
The family prefers memorials to be directed to the Mayo Foundation.
Hoff Funeral Homes - Rushford Chapel is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.

Marie Berg
Marie Berg, 74, unexpectedly died May 17, 2004, at her home.
She was born to Herman and Emma Luedtke in Winona and was the youngest of 10 children. She and her husband, Bob and sons, Michael and Jeffery, moved to Chula Vista, Calif., in 1958. They joined the Pilgram Lutheran Church, where she has been an active member for 46 years.
Mrs. Berg loved her Padres and the couple was a season ticket holder for more than 20 years. She retired from her job as a tax preparer in 1990.
Mrs. Berg is survived by her husband, Bob, of 56 years; sons, Michael (Patricia) of Santee, Calif., and Jeffery of Chula Vista; four sisters, Erma Arndt and Helen Braatz of Winona, Mildred Feine of St. Charles, and Arline Hass of Lady Lake, Fla.; and two brothers, Herman Jr. of Minnesota city and Walter of Winona.
Services were May 22 at Pilgram Lutheran Church, Chula Vista. Interment at Glen Abbey Memorial Park.
